My family and i have frequent this resturant on many occasions in the past, and have been quite satisfied with the service and the food. The atmosphere and the vibe reminds me of dining in the East Village or Park Slope in Brooklyn New York, so why travel all the way to New York to get good food and experience that feel of GENTRIFICATION? when it's in my own backyard in New Jersey. Although i may not agree with everything aspect of GENTRIFICATION it has it's good points. If this review was done several years ago or based off my past experience with Brewed Awakening and it's staff i would have given this place 5 stars. Please accept the fact that this review has nothing to do with the current staff, i think they have done and continue to do an exceptional job running the place for the owners, but i do think the owners need to hire more help. This particular day my wife and i could have gone down the block and have a bagel and a cup of coffee but we decided to have breakfast here because we haven't been in a while. So we go in sit down and notice the place not to be so busy, but it take about 20 minutes for anyone to come over and help us, we ordered 2 cups of coffee, 2 cups of iced water, 2 cups of oatmeal and 1 healthy omelette to share. It actually took 20 minutes to get 2 cups of coffee, no water, and no utensils. After sitting there for another 20 minutes we were wondering when the oatmeal was coming to the table which never came. One would think you would bring the oatmeal first then the main course but that never happen. So after sitting there for almost 45 minutes we became very frustrated and decided to go to the counter and ask about our order. To make a long story short i became very upset and decided to leave just paying for my coffee and leaving a $2.00 tip to be respectful, as i said earlier in this review it appears as if the owners needs to hire more help to balance out the service because only one person was available for all those customers waiting for attention. This is still a great place to meet for breakfast or lunch and this is no reflection on the current staff but, someone needs to address the lack of staff because if this type of service continues at BREWED AWAKENING they will have a RUDE AWAKENING.... read more

They serve amazing Mexican food every night! They serve it between 5-10pm. They have a great variety too! The staff is always super nice! I've also gone in the mornings/afternoon and the food/coffee is great! The atmosphere is nice. There are couches and a big area in the back if you have a larger group. Went here for the first time for lunch on a Saturday. OMG, such sloooooooooow service. The waitress literally wrote our order word for word and then comes with my iced tea with no ice in it saying "oh maybe you wanted ice" she was terrible. The food was okay, home fries were terrible. I had lunch here once with a friend. I ordered the grilled tofu wrap. It was delicious and tasty. I really enjoyed the sun dried tomato pesto sauce in the wrap. It came with a side salad. The portions were just about right; I wasn't stuffed but satisfied with my meal. The service was good, friendly and quick. Street parking is available since this place is right on Main Street. I'm not sure how this place stays in business since they don't make fresh coffee in the afternoon and they close at 7. The staff is friendly. However I don't like it when they take coffee that has been sitting in a thermos all day, heat it up with the milk steamer, and serve it to customers without shame. I have had scalded milk cappuccinos from there too. They just do coffee a severe injustice. I have to admit that they have a nice place to sit and chat with friends or type on your laptop. I just wish the coffee was good. The chilled iced teas are the only thing I buy now since it's hard to get that wrong. The space of the place is under utilized. If they had a better cook, made fresh coffee in the afternoon, and maybe someone playing guitar or reading poetry, it could potentially be a nicer spot. read more

I usually stop by in the mornings to get tea and a pastry before I head to class here. I like this place because its convenient to the train and the bus I catch for school. It gets pretty hectic sometimes during lunch and you might end up waiting awhile for your order. I used to go in the evenings but some of the wait staff who works the evening hours = not so friendly. It's a cozy little place to study though. They have a back room with a fire place that I sit at sometimes for extra quiet and some seating in the window to people watch. The ingredients they use are nothing spectacular and I have had better chai and coffee. But it's not horrible for what they charge. read more

Was greeted with that friendly smile I read about in a previous review, but service was lacking. The food was really good, but it took about 40 minutes to get it even though they weren't busy. Others came in after we did and finished their meal before we got served. I ordered a single shot Americana coffee. It was too strong and just didn't taste good, so I didn't drink it. The waiter said I should have ordered a regular coffee if I didn't want it strong. I often drink americana coffee and have never had an issue before. I keep making my friends go here & sadly each one won't return. :( On all three occasions I have waited between 15-40 (yes 40) minutes to be greeted, serviced, etc. Luckily I have friends and we chatter and time flies until you realize - well damn, i need to go feed the parking meter again and i haven't even had my coffee!! Beyond their amazing amaretto cappuccino & clever name - i see nothing really wonderful about this place. It needs to be redecorated, modernized, made comfy, walls are deep purple - the old leather couch is the only comfy spot. Chairs and tables are uncomfortable. Only good thing is the outdoor seating. They are in identity crisis as well - are you italian or mexican or coffee house? I'm confused. Italian cookies, mexican breakfast burritos, and fancy coffee? I don't actually drink coffee so I can only review the food there. I've been for breakfast a couple times now and the food has always been really good. Always comes out fast. The service is meh but I don't really weigh it that heavily. Their desserts look amazing, I'm usually just to full to sample some of them. Maybe one day soon. They also feature a Mexican portion on the menu I'd assume is good if they're going to focus on it like they do. All in all, I highly recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

I've only had the coffee/soy latte and some of the bakery items (cookies, pecan pie) here. All were pretty good. The sweets are nothing to write home about but at least they don't make me feel disgusting afterwards... always a plus. Lattes have always been good, coffee is decent. I travel a good distance to come here since I live in a work-friendly cafe deadzone (*bux does NOT count) and find that this is a good place to work- not a particularly inviting atmosphere, but it's fairly quiet with folks either studying or having intimate conversations. And the barista is usually this sweet Mexican guy, though yes, service can be a bit slow even with drinks. But if I'm there working for a couple hours, it doesn't really bother me. Wireless has been good in the past but during my most recent visit, it cut out a lot. Don't know what that was about. If this becomes a regular occurrence, I may have to relocate to The Coffeehouse (Edison) more permanently. read more

I've been here, twice now. And I think that will be the last time I will ever grace this place. It was not a good experience. Server took long time to get to us. The table that was available still needed some cleaning. Milk was curdled! And to make matters worse, our order ended up on someone else's table. And if I had not inquired about it, they would not have known it ended up on a wrong table. What was bizarre to me was, how come someone not mention they got the wrong order? Good coffee. Good food. Good environment. I've passed by this coffee shop a couple times and always meant to stop by, but didn't get a chance to until recently. It's located on main street with street parking so parallel parking skills will come in handy. They have about 10 smaller sized tables with window seating in the front and a little nook area in the back. I came right before the breakfast/brunch rush on a Saturday morning (10ish) so it's probably best to come a bit earlier. I'm not extremely picky about my coffee, but the coffee here was definitely on thelight side. I prefer just plain ole black coffee (like my soul) so I would have liked it a tad darker, but it wasn't a big deal. Decided on an omelette brimming with fresh delicious veggies and homefries on the side. It was reasonably priced at $7.50 and perfectly portioned. On the other hand, my partner wasn't too keen on his french toast and said it lacked flavor. The crew here is really friendly and welcoming and I commend that! I work in the food industry too and it's always refreshing to go to places with friendly service. The only reason I'm knocking off a star is because it took forever to refill our coffee and bring out the check (had to go to the counter each time). I'll definitely be back here though, I'm jealous that it's located in Metuchen and not Highland Park. For a college area, you'd think there would be more independent coffee shops! read more

Brewed Awakening is my favorite place to go in NJ! I could not say enough good things about this place! Everyone who works there is very kind and easy to talk to. I go there to grab some coffee and do computer work at least 3-5x per week. I also go there when I want to grab a nice breakfast or lunch with my friends and family. The ambience is perfect for any situation! The food is amazing and the portions are just right! But, the biggest reason I find myself there a couple times a week is because of the COFFEE! The lattes are amazing! Annie will even prepare it however you like it, which for me is half decaf, half regular. Plus the prices are just right! If you are ever in Metuchen, NJ I highly recommend visiting Brewed Awakening whether its for a nice lunch or just a quick coffee! read more

They were going to get three stars. The food was average. But I should have walked out as soon as I saw the ice in the orange juice. That means two things, that the orange juice is going to be watered down and terrible, and that the restaurant is cheap - trying to stretch their $3.75/glass profit margin even further. The ketchup was wayyyy too acidic. Either cheap ketchup or it went bad. The food took literally FOREVER to arrive. About 35 minutes for a place that had one other small table eating food. The server never checked up on us. After the meal, we waited, and waited and finally just got up to pay at the counter after the realization that the server wasn't coming back. BAM massive sign on the register advertising a 4% service fee for credit card users in an age where everything is becoming cashless. Many places are not even accepting cash due to the pandemic. To add 4% on an already steeply priced menu is just pathetic. Come on. Get with the times. This place needs an "awakening" read more

Main St. Metuchen is a great place to find a good cup of coffee and a casual bite to eat. Brewed Awakening has been here since I can remember. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. They offer a variety of breakfast and lunch fair ranging from wraps and sandwiches, to buckwheat pancakes, and a solid variety of teas. But let's talk about the real reason you would probably come here, the coffee. I think you're in for a disappointing awakening... the coffee leaves much to be desired. Now I like coffee with some character, flavor, and consistency, and their coffee is not that. Their cappuccino is a couple shots of espresso with lots of milk, far from steamed. We stopped by for a late breakfast for four. The waitress was very kind and helpful, took our breakfast orders and she served our coffees. I ordered a cup of coffee, but served one of those huge bowl like cups. That was pretty awesome. It wasn't overly busy, but they weren't able to get out food order out in a timely manner and three of four were served while the fourth person, me, had to wait a few more minutes while they made mine since it looked like they forgot. The portions were comically small for the amount charged. I can see this as a great place for a cup/ bowl of coffee and a danish/ muffin, but not for an actual meal. read more

The food is amazing and it has a Caribbean taste to it because the owner is Trinidadian and Indian. The service was really nice and the owner even came out to greet us through her busy times. They have the best accommodations for outdoor seating and they really try to make you feel the most comfortable. The owner's son also came out to greet us and give us their homemade pepper sauce which tastes really good. We will definitely be back to eat here often!! read more
