Our first time at an Asian bakery since moving to Jersey! I funny enough heard about this in passing and not long after, spotted this place in the same shopping center as the 99 Ranch in Edison and I made a pit stop there (hence no drinks) before going on a grocery run. It was at night on a Saturday so many of the shelves were empty but they still had a few things left. Sunmerry appears to be a chain but one that I have never visited before until now so I can't really comment on what they have, but I did manage to grab: MATCHA CLOUD DONUT - This reminded me vaguely of the im donut donuts I tried in NYC. Very soft and pillowy and filled to the brim with a lightly sweet, matcha filling. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about this. RED BEAN MATCHA BAGEL - it's a matcha dough with red bean filling BUT the filling doesn't go all the way around. It goes maybe 65% so if you're splitting this with someone like I did, fingers crossed you both get a decent amount. The bagel was soft and in a bagel shape but it lacked the chew of a bagel. The filling was nice and different but the matcha taste was subtle - if that. Overall, liked the idea, but I wanted more of a bagel chew than what I got and to taste the matcha better. Maybe even have a more even share of the red bean. COFFEE BRIOCHE LOAF - my husband liked this one! Which is good because I got it for him. This is quite good. Soft, lightly sweet with a coffee top. We ate this maybe 12 hours after and much of the top layer had "melted" and gotten on the cellophane but it was still delicious. Perfection. I definitely scraped off the coffee bits from the cellophane so it didn't go to waste. PINEAPPLE BUN W/ MILK - I grabbed this one thinking there was a filling inside and there wasn't. I don't know if the bun was placed in the wrong location or the name is telling me the bun isn't vegan but it's a good pineapple bun but without anything inside, it was a tad dry. Maybe it needs a pat of butter like they do in HK. MELON PAN - I haven't had this in a good long while so I got it for fun. It's smaller than the pineapple bun and the topping is a little sweeter - I remember crunching on sugar crystals. It's not bad but also not filled so it's a tiny bit on the dry side. The place has tables to the side where you can enjoy your goodies. I didn't stay too long but they definitely serve drinks and delicious cakes as well. The staff were nice and the place seemed on the dim side. Fingers crossed I can go back during the day to get a better idea of what they have! In the meantime, this is a good place for an Asian bakery fix. They do list out ingredients under the names of their baked goods so that's awesome! We don't come up to Edison often, but every time we are here we try to stop by at this bakery. I didn't get to take the photo of their egg tarts, but they are very delicious! I think out of all the egg tarts I have tasted I like this one the best. They have freshly baked egg tarts coming out at least 3x/day. They even have a membership program that gives you dollars off your purchases--definitely worth joining if you come often. The place was clean and the location had plenty of parking. The place doesn't sell your standard Chinese bakery breads so the pricing was definitely more pricier. They had a in store special where if you buy five, you get one free. We got some breads to try, but the options were very limited since we came about an hour before closing. The bolo bun compared to the Chinese ones are different, but it was tasty and chewy. I enjoyed it and would come back again earlier to try more breads. I'm a fan of Sunmerry's but prefer the Green Brook location. I picked up my 2 favorite items: cream filled brioche donut and a coconut brioche braid. The coconut brioche braid was delicious, as always but the cream filled brioche donut didn't seem as fresh and it seemed to have been fried in oil that wasn't as clean. Some of my favorites here include the boba pudding, upside down crème brûlée puff, and big coconut pastry. The boba pudding is served in a small cup and has a smooth texture. The crème brûlée puff has a crunchy top and an amazing cream inside. The big coconut is always soft and has yummy chunks of raisin throughout. Wonderful Taiwanese bakery. They make delicious pineapple cakes, the best I've had in the US - and also pretty hard to find outside of imported ones at grocery stores. I ordered 4 different cake slices last time for a friend's birthday: black forest, mixed fruit, mango mousse, and matcha mousse. We all liked black forest the best - it was very light and well balanced in the flavor. Every time I'm in the area I'm sure to pick up some pineapple cakes because they're just so good. I also tried their Japanese cheesecake, it was light and fluffy and not too sweet. Ambiance wise, there seem to be a lot of high school/college age kids hanging out, it's not ideal for enjoying a calm visit since the space is not that big and the line runs through the middle of the store. I think I wanted to like things more than I did but maybe because everything looked nicer than what it really tasted. It didnt really blow my mind with what I have tried and I guess I wouldnt really want to go out of my way to get anything particular if I had to pick. I tried the taro bun but it didnt have much filling inside sadly. I also tried one of their donuts but i think that, you have to eat fresh because it tasted a bit oily when I finally got to it. I would say their egg tarts are pretty good, especially since they do also list times they come out of the oven, so you can snag a warm one with the right timing. I also got one of their taro cakes and i feel like the picture of it on the box looks better than what is inside. It definitely has a good layer of taro filling, but the cake itself was not as how the picture shows up. It is more porous compared to the picture. It supposed to look more like a chiffon cake/sponge cake texture, but it wasnt as plush as that. The cake wasnt too sweet which was nice, but it was ok at most. I wouldnt really want to get it again and i feel like I would prefer a slice over the whole log. But price was decent to share and it didnt feel too heavy when eating it because there was pretty much just taro paste sandwiched in the middle. This shop has just about everything you can think of. I was so surprised of the variety. They have cakes, slices, speciality cream puffs, pan cotta, puddings, and Asian specialities. When you enter, grab a tray an use the tongs to get as many or as few of the baked goods as you'd like. I highly recommend the green tea croissant, but they have everything from cheesecakes, mango mousses and custards to nutella buns, simple breads and cookies. Everything is individually wrapped, so perfect if you are grabbing enough for several people. On my last trip here, I got a hot matcha latte and a green tea croissant and stayed to get a little work done. Both were delicious and exactly what I was looking for. Sunmerry Bakery usually has a good variety of baked goods to pick from. Even for 5 PM on a Sunday, there was still a good amount to choose from. I like Sunmerry because it's kind of like Paris Baguette but slightly cheaper. The Hokkaido cream cake is one of my favorites. Soft cake with vanilla flavored cream on the inside that's the perfect amount of sweetness. The cream brûlée bread was good but very sweet. They offer bubble tea and fruit tea. Good, but nothing that makes them stand out. I wish the prices of the cakes were that expensive. I haven't purchased any of those but I walked out with a walnut cookie, egg tarts (2 for $5.50), matcha cream cheese puff, and garlic parsley bread. All tasted as expected at a reasonable price- came out to $14. I appreciated that the walnut cookie was slightly bready and that the cheese puff wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. I visited this bakery for the first time today and will definitely be coming back. There were lots of different pastries to choose from. I was recommended the mushroom and cheese bread as a savory option and really enjoyed it. I also got the coffee brioche because it looked delicious.
