Only a few months after the closure of its next-door neighbor (the pokebowl restaurant Fresh Coast), Cinnaholic's fifth NJ location opened today right next to the Woodmont. Predictably, the line for the $2 buns from 10 AM to 2 PM was about 20+ people deep when I stopped by during lunchtime. What I didn't predict was a DJ under a Cinnaholic tent outside blasting deafening hip-hop directly at the people waiting in line. (I'm sure the Woodmont residents and the rest of Metuchen also enjoyed having their ears explode for four straight hours on account of this grand opening. The amount of rubbernecking from cars passing by was epic.) I would have been willing to pay full price just to not have to wait in line for so long while losing my hearing and my mind. I tried a cookie monster, which was edible but not noteworthy enough to justify the hype. It takes more than just ice cream toppings and vegan ingredients to make a good hipster pastry. We went to visit and try their vegan and fruit flavored cinnamon rolls. Our first time here. They opened more than a month ago here in Metuchen, NJ. I ordered a cup of coffee and Tropical Bliss roll. My wifey ordered Strawberries and Cream roll with walnuts. Both rolls have fresh fruits. Mine have blueberries, baby bananas, coconuts and raspberry frosting. They're delicious, not too sweet. The location has a trendy minimalist vibe with window bar seating inside and a few metal tables and chairs setup outside. We were immediately greeted by a friendly staff member who told us about the specials for the anniversary and asked if we had any questions. They offer a wide selection of treats: cinnamon rolls, cookies, brownies, cookie dough, cookie shots, to name a few. There are signature rolls and options to create your own. Cinnamon buns on steroids. Actually the buns were an average size, but the toppings, were over the top. We got four buns, one with fruit (very fresh), one akin to rocky road ice cream, (leave off the pretzels, they get soft too easy), campfire s'more which is good, and the plain which is our favorite. It's best IMHO to eat at the shop where the buns stay warm. The counter attendants were very sweet and helpful. I'm old school, I don't need all the extras. I just want the plain cinnamon bun. I was so excited to try this place out! Since going dairy free I've never been able to get cinnamon rolls out so this was a really cool find. I got an Old Skool for now, cookie for later, and a black iced coffee. The roll had way too much icing on it for my taste so I ended up scooping off about 80% of it, and even still it was very very sweet. I also didn't taste much cinnamon until getting to the inner rings of the roll. I was glad I tried this but likely won't get it again. If I were to go back I'd probably try one of their less-sweet-sounding frostings, like almond or hazelnut. I am so excited this place opened nearby because it is not only delicious but vegan!! This company was on Shark Tank couple years ago so seeing a physical store was absolutely surreal and so awesome. I also ordered 4 rolls - I found that 1 is good for an individual but if you and your family or friends are looking to share pieces, 3-4 is perfect! I just had a very unfortunate experience here. I walked into a line of people waiting, while one young lady ignored them to make an order. I assumed it was for the person in the front, until I noticed that they awkwardly walked out. The couple in front of me then turned around and said that the young lady told them it would a 20 minute wait because she was busy making an order and had to do that. Not once did she stop, acknowledge us, NOTHING. The gentleman in front of us then called out to her and asked if they could at least order, where she finally came over and reluctantly put it in. My daughter and I were next, and she proceeded to ignore us, until I called out to her to ask if we too could place an order. I asked if the 20 min rumor was true and she replied "Well, I need to finish this first." She wouldn't even walk over and acknowledge us. Mind you, this was an hour before closing and pretty dead, otherwise. To assuage the situation, I asked if the cookie dough was ready, and she said yes, so I tried to reason and offered to just take scoops of that since it's already made. Her reply was "ok, but I I still need to finish this first." ABSOLUTELY appalling. In all my years in the industry, you always acknowledge physical customers in front of you. Not only did she ignore, she wasn't even interested in trying to help anyone that walked in the door and treated us like an inconvenience. I am disgusted as I have visited this establishment before and enjoyed it. Now, what was supposed to be my daughter's first time is ruined. We will not be back. Also, for what it's worth, I then watched a group of people walk in, order and be serviced right way with small boxes that WERE NOT the order she was working on. I went here with high hopes and was deeply disappointed the service was extremely slow and the kitchen was overcrowded with workers. When I finally received my order (a regular cinnamon bun) and opened it up in the car I was horrified. It was sloppy and when I ate it was disgusting and had a horrible after taste. Since we tried the new pizzeria in town Che Pizza, right around the corner was the new Cinnaholic so we gave it a try. It was OK. We were not looking for a vegan desert but gave it a chance. We went with the classic in order to make a comparison to Cinnabon. The roll itself was tasty but the topping had the consistency of whipped cream and was mild in flavor which made it just OK. Expect to pay $5-$8 depending on which type of roll you order and they do have a nice-looking variety. Good luck to Cinnaholic but my preference remains Cinnabon. read more
