This is how much I trust Dr. Suver…read more Every time my partner and I consider buying a new home, we pull up Google maps and run my "ultimate test": how far will this house be from Dr. Suver. Dr Suver is one of the best humans I know. Seriously. I just came back from a 10 day vipassana meditation retreat. For those of you who don't know, your day starts when you wake up at 4 am and ends at 9 pm. Most of the day you're sitting and meditating. No phones. No talking. Naturally, I was super nervous about it in general because of all the chronic pain I have day to day that builds up in my neck and spine. If I sit the wrong way, it ends up feeling like it's burning between my vertebrae and my muscles and connective tissue. There are times the pain is so much and leads to anxiety and depression, but seeing Dr Suver for the past two years is what has gotten me through most of it. So the week prior I had a mysterious flare up on my right rib which ended up traveling and locking up my entire neck. I was in sooooo much pain. I reached out to dr Suver (who was on vacation with his family mind you) about my concerns and not only did he give me a bunch of suggestions... he reached out a day later to tell me he set something up with a colleague who has his own private practice. He even called in a favor negotiated a special rate since my rates are much lower at Dr Suver's. Also.. my adjustments require laser precision. I'm one of the more extreme clients who can't just get adjusted by any 'ol chiropractor. He explained to his colleague exactly how to adjust me so I wouldn't have to. Not that I would know. Seriously he is so intuitive. I can go in with pain and guarding and within seconds, he knows exactly where I need an adjustment. I just cannot praise him enough. You have no idea how much that means as a person who has chronic pain. I still had some residual pain on my neck but it was enough to make me feel comfortable going and sitting. It's rare to meet businesses who continually care for you after the initial honeymoon first impression phase. I think I've been with Dr Suver for two years now and I'm not looking back! Seriously. Dr. Suver is incredible due to his genuine efforts to listen and adjust accordingly to each patients' specific condition, week by week. On weeks when things were rough or I was in a weak state, he was great about backing off and only ramping it up when appropriate. He did an excellent job gauging when my body and mind were able to take heavy or light work. Initially Dr. Suver did the proper groundwork with verbal, physical, and imaging diagnostics. He did a great job of walking me through the process. I did find relief and aid from his adjustments as well as the massage therapist who is a part of SCLC (Trevor). That said, many weeks it was extremely intense and exhausting as my body reacted to the adjustments. Dr. Suver was clear and honest from the beginning saying that the fairly severe issues with my atlas (connection area between top of spine and skull) and lower lumbar could be improved but potentially not solved completely but he would do his best. I appreciated that honesty and that clear expectations were set. No fairy tales. We agreed on a 6 months timeline of treatments to try to make it work. After the 6 months I stopped seeing Dr. Suver due to the cost struggling to cover things out of pocket and it seemed we had reached a wall of improvement. As opposed to the horror stories you may hear of providers trying to continuously tie a patient into further work, Dr. Suver understood the position and things finished well without any aggressive selling attempts. That said, I could tell Dr. Suver genuinely wished he could treat me longer because he wanted to solve the problem completely! A real class act. I noticed relief from his work and would absolutely recommend him. After a move from Seattle I have seen another chiropractor in network who confirmed much of Dr. Suver's professional opinion and added on PT/strengthening exercises in order to try to maintain and improve the efficacy of the adjustments. Dr. Zhu (the elder) was recommended to me by my aunt who had a stroke about 5 years ago leaving her…read morecrippled on her left side. After she was released from the hospital, she went to Dr. Zhu for intensive acupuncture treatments, and after about 1 year she had regained mobility on the left side of her face to the point where she appeared as normal as before the incident. She was also able to lift her left leg a little and had regained some sensation in her left hand. For acupuncture skeptics, this could very well be just part of the "normal recovery" that many stroke victims undergo with the normal passage of time, but for my aunt, Dr. Zhu is a godsend. Take it as you wish. Cut to 2016, where - forced by the back pain from sciatica, I finally made the almost unbearable (pain was the worst when sitting in a car) drive from north Seattle to the I.D. on a Saturday morning. Right at 10am (Dr. Zhu is very flexible about appointments - it's pretty much first come first serve) I was lucky enough to just beat the rush of pain/pimple/and angst-ridden patients that poured through his doors and was shown to a room with three beds. Dr. Zhu doesn't mess around. No pulse taking, thumping on your head, or taking your chakras with a tuning fork. This is serious acupuncture stuff of the Chinese school - which means that the needles are placed directly in injured areas - regardless of the decibel of your yelping - to maximize relief. He also placed a heat lamp on my back and I laid like a slug melting for about 40 minutes, with Dr. Zhu coming in from time to time to see if I was still coherent. After the needle treatment, Dr. Zhu announced that he would like to try an electrical treatment, which I had taken to be putting electricity through the acupuncture needles - a common practice, but nein. This was a machine I had encountered during PT, where pads are placed on the sore areas and increasing vibration is fed through a machine to the pads to relieve the tension and pain. Dr. Zhu, seeing that I had not passed out from the needles, surmised that I was of tougher mettle than I'd appeared, and cranked up the machine to the "are you kidding me?" setting - the kind where, if one were to speak, the words would come out as, "B-b-b-but....d-d-d-doct...orrrrr ..c-c-c-can I w-w-walk after th-th-th-this?!" Other reviews have complained that there's no privacy in the clinic and this is true, particularly if you are fluent in Chinese. A young lady in the next room had terrible pimples from spicy foods, some guy down the hall had some mysterious illness which made him unable to move further up the bed, even with Dr. Zhu's kind coaching (c'mon...you can do it... there you go...just a little more....), and yet another person had some kind of knee pain that prevented him from bending his knee. Right before switching to the electrical therapy, Dr. Zhu came in and mentioned that a lady will be coming into the room. I had assumed that this meant a lady will be **attending to me** for the electric shock therapy portion But nyet. A lady barged into my room, while I was laying prostrate on the bed, shorts halfway down my ass, and proceeded to undress to her grey flannel underwear and voluminous flesh-colored bra in front of me. As it turned out she likewise had back pain, and as the clinic was getting full, Dr. Zhu thought we would bond over our mutual pain. Her husband, as it turned out, was in the other room with similar problems. Like some of the other reviewers here, if you are not familiar with the Chinese culture nor the way clinics are run in Asia, you may be put off by sharing your space with a half-naked stranger while little beads of sweat are running down your own half-naked butt crack underneath the heat lap. But if you can get over this little mental "hump" then you may realize that your pain has actually dissipated to a lightness you've not felt since 2 weeks ago, when you bent over to get that 2CF bag of top soil or 40lb suitcase, which triggered the back pain in the first place. For Dr. Zhu's electrical zap machine had pretty much buzzed the pain into oblivion, and even as I skipped across the street to "Cake House" for some sweet buns, I could still feel the pleasant buzzing on my back. It's now day 2 and the pain has even further dissipated. But the sessions are not cheap, though they are in keeping with market rates. First session - almost 2 hours in length was $90, with subsequent sessions $70.00/each. My aunt, who had gone religiously twice a week for a year - was given a further discount. DR. Zhu does take some insurance. Besides acupuncture Dr. Zhu does dispense herbal medicines, though he did not push this on me. A good choice for an acupuncturist, particularly if you work downtown or the ID.
