If I could give a zero point I would. The office staff did not inform me that they do not take patients without insurance who pay for themselves. The office made me wait almost 6 weeks for an emergency (not bad enough for emergency room) type visit, then canceled without a reason. When I called them to ask why they said because we don't take patients without insurance. Then Why didn't you tell me this before. So I can see a Dr who can help me. Their answer today was good luck, by Lisa the very stoned sounding, "I don't care about you" attitude said we wish you well, goodbye. If it's your policy not to take self paid patients then You should have told me and not made me wait 6 weeks. This is not the way to treat people. I have been unable to get anyone on the phone from the office even though I kept trying. The one time I got to the front of the queue, the line hung up on me. I suspect the issue is 'new patient'. They probably have enough business and don't need new patients. Who knows what will happen if I actually get surgery and I am unable to reach these guys. This Doctor is afraid of his own shadaw, Boo ! He won't see anyone without the covid vaccine which is uncalled for because if he is already vaccinated then he is protected. He should wear a helmut allday long because a meteor might come falling down on him or a witches house might fall on him. Boo you know nothing , even dentists are seeing people without a vaccine. I created a yelp just to write this review. Worst patient experienced I have ever received. Starting seeing Dr. Levitt after 10 years of history with Crohn's disease and was completely unheard. I had a colonoscopy in the past few years but was required to get a new one before starting any sort of treatment (although frustrating, I understand). Between the first appointment, scheduling the colonoscopy, and the follow up visit to discuss, moths have gone by. This is during COVID, so trying to be understanding but does not seem like a priority to re-establish care. Had multiple discussion on care plans but decided to throw the book with every sort of test, immunization, and consult possible. In the 8 months that Dr. Levitt was my doctor, I was never prescribed a medication but spent THOUSANDS of dollars in tests to "get on track for a treatment plan". Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I moved from San Jose to San Francisco and needed to get a new doctor. When I called the office for a referral to my preferred doctor in the area, I was told "Dr. Levitt does not know any doctors in the area and cannot give a referral". Because I did not have a referral, I was unable to make an appointment with a majority of the doctors in the area without going through a primary care, which during COVID is incredibly difficult. Some medical facilities in my area are not giving primary care so I am unable to access whole hospitals of care because I was unable to get a referral from Dr. Levitt. I am in tears writing this because of the sheer frustration of the entire situation. I would have rather not perused medical treatment all together than jumped through the hoops Dr. Levitt made me go through and ultimately not receive treatment. Help yourself and find another other doctors in the area. Shame on you Dr. Levitt. read more

I believe Dr. Brian S. Levitt is extremely unethical, and would recommend that potential patients look elsewhere. I had a colonoscopy done by Dr. Levitt several years ago. During the consultation appointment, he used some of my personal medical information to make a determination that I might be an ideal customer for a service his wife's company sells. I was really not interested, and gave a vaguely positive yet noncommittal (i.e. polite) response. This should have been a big red flag to me, but I figured that was the end of it and decided to go ahead and schedule the procedure. A few months later on the morning of the colonoscopy, I was prepped and wheeled into the procedure room. The anesthesiologist may have already started the sedative flowing into my IV. Then Dr. Levitt came into the room and IMMEDIATELY asked me whether I had pursued purchasing his wife's company's services. I told him that I hadn't, and he proceeded to ask me more questions about why I wasn't interested in his wife's services, and his tone became rather pushy. I was in utter disbelief. Here I was in an EXTREMELY vulnerable situation, and the man who was about to perform a very sensitive invasive medical procedure on me was giving me a hard time about not buying additional unrelated services that would have benefitted him financially. I was very tempted to call the procedure off right then. I was angry and confused. But I decided to let the procedure continue simply because the alternative would have been extremely inconvenient. When I "came to" after the procedure, the staff tended to me and I never saw the Dr. again. I was recently due for a subsequent colonoscopy. Once I explained to my General Practitioner why I would not be returning to Dr. Levitt, I became increasingly determined to share my story in the hopes of sparing other patients the awful experience I suffered in his care. read more

I was referred to another Dr. at the SJGI office on Montepelier by my PCP 2 years ago, however, when I called I was informed that the Dr. was booked and the receptionist recommended Dr. Levitt. She stated that he is very nice and I would like him. I did! I am usually hesitant to meet with any new doctor and doctors that I can't put a face too. Immediately, after scheduling I had to google for Dr. Levitt's face. I was glad to see that he looked kind. My first meeting with Dr. Levitt was very informational though I had to wait a little bit. Dr. Levitt provided me with information about my medical condition, research, medication, and followup on my questions/concerns. He explained things in terms that I would understand and made it simple. I felt comfortable with this first appointment and definitely under his care. I appreciate his time and effort to call me directly with lab results or concerns he has. He also understands what it's like to be a patient to take time off for appointments and has suggested that I would be followup a certain # of times in person as he doesn't want me to come in for just 5 minutes visit. He's very honest and is a listener. No doubt about it that he's one of the few doctors I am not afraid to go for appointments and is way better than my specialist I seen at Kaiser Santa Teresa. read more

Dr. Levitt did a great job on my colonoscopy. The procedure went so smoothly: setup a consultation and schedule for day of procedure. After procedure done, I woke up the next day doing normal routine without feeling any different. His staffs called me twice checking on how I felt. read more

Levitt comes off as nice. But, if you don't go for the full slate of procedures he thinks may be 'a good idea', he'll cut off your prescriptions, close your file, and basically screw you. I had a total colectomy in '01. I told him I take Loperamide for two decades and it's become too expensive OTC. He insisted I do a camera test on my whole guts even though I get colonoscopies per post-op directions. When I declined the camera test , he figures he won't get paid IMO, so he closed my file. Now I can't get a script after he wrote it for 14 months. I feel SCAMMED, will now go to appropriate .gov authorities. read more

Yelpers! THIS PERTAINS TO FISRT TIME COLONOSCOPY: First time today at seeing an FACG doctor, obviously nervous. I read some of the reviewers, and here's my take. The office is clean, staffing is friendly & courteous, they had me in for my consultation exactly on time. Dr. Levitt is affable, professional, listens patiently and is VERY knowledgeable. Some not so positive feedback I read suggest Dr Levitt is a 'know-it-all'. To be honest, if this doctor is gonna be probing my butt with a 12 inch coil....well, I WANT him to be a 'know-it-all' !! More to post after the procedure. Finally had the procedure at Montpelier. The staff was efficient & kind. Dr Levitt was engaging and helped with my nervousness prior to the 'plunge'. You know, it wasn't bad at all. I could hardly feel a thing except for a few 'pangs' which I was warned about. You get to watch the whole screening ..if you want. It was quick, maybe 15 mts. Dr Levitt came to speak with me about his preliminary analysis. Overall, I found Dr and staff at both locations to be professional and accommodating. Dr. Levitt is a careless doctor in my opinion, which makes him (and similar doctors) dangerous, because their lack of interest in determining root cause combined with their expert status can cause unnecessary damage to a patient. I had issues with chronic bloating, belching, and stomach ache and Dr. Levitt was highly recommended to me. By then I had taken antacid for over a year and did not have a clear idea about the long-term impact of being on medication, and desperately needed to find the root cause for my illness. Dr. Levitt went through my notes from previous visits with family doctor and GI specialist, and by the second (and final) time we met he quite nonchalantly laid it out that I was indeed suffering from GERD and that there were plenty of people who take antacid for the rest of their lives. He was basically reassuring me that it is safe to stay on antacid indefinitely. And this is where his worst advice was given. He told me that if I wanted to be off antacid, I could run a stomach acidity test after which (if I wished) I could have an operation to tie my stomach to avoid acid reflux. The option he offered me was basically to either do nothing or to operate my stomach. Eventually I came across another doctor who strongly suggested that I would stop eating gluten. The same doctor suggested that antacid is often prescribed incorrectly even though the digestion issues are sometimes due to low stomach acidity and taking HCL instead of antacid is the solution. None of this information was provided to me by Dr. Levitt, who is a GI specialist and should know this. My issues went away almost immediately once I stopped eating gluten. Imagine how uninformed and careless of a GI specialist Dr. Levitt must be that he would actually suggest operating and tying a healthy stomach when the root cause was simply gluten insensitivity. read more

There are two types of doctors in the world: 1. take the responsibility, give you advice, help the patient to recover as soon as possible. 2. take no responsibility, ignore all what patient says, only rely on test, put you into a loop of test, make appointment, check, do test again, as long as you are not dead. Unfortunately, based on my two visits, I think Doctor Levitt is the second type. He should be very experienced in answering questions like a politician or a robot. I think everyone is different. A good doctor can easily exclude a lot of causes based on patient's age and life style. But this doctor only refers to test, which means without test, he will make no move. My feeling is that Doctor Levitt is more interested in protecting himself than helping the patient, although he is very good at pretending he wants to do a favor. It's a shame that USA builds such an expensive and inefficient health-care system. I do miss my doctor in New York and a lot of doctors in China and Japan. read more

Dr. Levitt is great! I went to the O'Connor office, and his staff was also very friendly--when I said I was thirsty, they went & got me some water. Super nice. So, when I go to look for a Dr. I usually go online to check out their credentials. He has a great pedigree. But, more importantly, he has a wonderful bedside manner. I had to wait a little while to see him, but once he came in, I understood why: He actually took time to really, REALLY, talk to me. Having a conversation with a G.I. doc about your BM issues doesn't top anyone's list of a good time, but Dr L. put me at ease. He listened carefully, wrote down my answers, and asked me a number of questions himself. When he found out that I didn't go back to my previous GI doc, he wanted to know why. I told him that once I had my colonoscopy, they said "everythings fine, come back in 10 years", but my problem wasn't solved. After hearing this, he handed me his business card & said, please *do* call, or come back to me if you have any questions, now, or at any point in the future. Dr. Levitt is a wonderful find. I first came to Dr. Levitt for treatment of a chronic condition when my GI Specialist retired. He is an excellent communicator who ensures all your questions are answered, you understand everything, and you understand all your options. He is very good about returning calls and I have always been able to get in to see him when it has been urgent. My experiences with him have always been excellent. A truly caring doctor. read more

I was referred to his office by a very good surgeon, but looks like it was just a neighborhood-friendship referral. First of all, I had an important condition and I still had to wait 1.5 months. I don't think the front desk ladies ever check the waitlist since I am sure people won't be able to hold their appointments for 1.5mo perfectly. Secondly, I went there on time and there were 2 person ahead of me on top of the one in his office. I had to drive half an hour in the rush hour traffic, and back to work another half an hour, the front desk didn't even bother letting me know about this extra-big delay. And she even pretended nothing happened and told me I can cancel if I want. I only need to ask the doctor something quick, but she didn't bother holding the dr. off for a min even though he was walking by us. So overall, they have respect for neither your time nor your health. I used they because the doctor is responsible from the front desk, not vice versa. So he is as guilty.. Don't risk your time/health, don't ruin your day; Just ignore the friendship-referrals and find professional doctor with a professional front desk. read more

I was referred to SJGI by my PCP, and I opted to be seen by Dr. Levitt. Boy, did I make the right decision. From my initial consultation I could tell that Dr. Levitt had a depth of experience in his area of expertise, and was a clear communicator about the details and options. I had a routine procedure done, and Dr. Levitt was very clear in explaining to me and my son about the results. Some of what he found was worrying, so him and his staff worked very hard to get me a referral to a specialist at Stanford. This might have saved my life. I'm having mixed feelings about Dr. Levitt. My first visit, he spent a long time with me, he was very thorough and detailed. However, his bedside manner and his attitude could use some adjustment. I know you're a doctor but I don't need you to act like you know it all. Clearly I'm aware you know what you're talking about since you're a specialist. Secondly, it seemed like he gave me referrals for some diagnostic testing to simply humor me, he even said "i dont think there's anything wrong but we'll do the test anyway". I was told he's the best in his field, but he comes off as very snobbish and like a know it all. I'll come back for a follow up visit, but that's simply because I need to know if there's something wrong with me or not. read more

Well, I don't actually know if he's a good doctor or not. 5 minutes before my appointment while I'm on my way there, someone calls me from his office to tell me they don't take my insurance. I've actually never encountered a place that doesn't take my insurance. It is a very common plan. The part that I'm really irritated with is that they called me 5 minutes before my appointment to tell me that I was going to have to pay for the whole thing out of pocket. 5 minutes. Cute. I altered my schedule significantly to get to this appointment and they call 5 minutes before hand to tell me it isn't going to fly. read more

Absolutely phenomenal doctor. He listens to your concerns, takes into account your insurance limitations as well as you're feelings about certain treatment options. He always is up on the latest within his field and is trying to make sure the treatment offered is the right one as everyone's condition can be just a bit different. My 83 y/o Mother had her feeding tube removed by Dr. Levitt today. It was painless! We had been told by at least 4 other doctors that it would hurt a lot. Dr. Levitt did not yank it out as other doctors do, instead he just gently and quickly removed it. Besides that, he is patient, kind, smart, and has a good sense of humor. We went to the O'Connor Drive office and found the staff there to be pleasant, helpful, and efficient. If you want the best doctor possible, Dr. Levitt is your man. We will be encouraging all of our friends and relatives to go to him. We left his office feeling extremely satisfied and happier than we could have imagined. read more

I have been referred to SJ Gastroenterology by my PCP and had a couple of concerns of my own. I choose to see Dr Levitt, just really a random pick, and found him to be fantastic. I am not a master of long reviews but here is a couple of points which he is my absolutely FIRST CHOICE for any gastroenterology needs or questions: - Dr Levitt really listens to you and is focused to help and address your concerns. You will get his undivided attention, your problems will be put first, and (most important!!) how you want to approach them will be taken into consideration - I was given options to choose from, and Dr Levitt explained the impact, timeline, and differences between these options - all this in the context of my age, risk group, etc. - Overall, high level of professional knowledge and genuine care If this is not enough, the reception is very friendly and there was practically no wait time.... read more

My father was referred to this clinic by his primary care Doctor and he had an appointment a couple of days ago. The appointment was scheduled for 12 noon which I forgot and missed the appointment. I received a call from Dr. Levitt's office at around 12:20 pm to see If I am on my way for the appointment. I told the lady that I am sorry but I forgot but we can be there in 15-20 minutes if they can still see my dad or we can reschedule for another day. She said let me check with the doctor and I will call you back. At around 12:30 I got a call back to come-in as the doctor confirmed to see my dad. I got there at 12:45 signed-in and the Asian lady at the front desk ask me to have a seat. I told her the whole story that we missed the appointment but doctor still allowed us to come in. After making a round and talking to another girl sitting in the right corner of the office she came back to me and said we can not see you and you guys have to come back. I was surprised and asked why, what is the reason since I just got the confirmation about 15-20 minutes ago. That's when the other girl jumped in and said because you guys are late that's why we can not see you. I repeated the whole conversation with her that we missed the appointment at noon and 12:20 we got the first call to see if we are coming, at 12:30 we got a call back to be there in 15-20 minutes and we are here exactly at 12:45. The girl said there is nothing we can do, someone will call you to reschedule the appointment. I asked for the doctor and the girl said he had to be at another office at 1 pm so he has already left the office. I asked her if he had an appointment at 1 pm at another office why did he ask us to come in at 12:45 pm, we could have easily rescheduled for another day. Did he just scheduled the 1 pm appointment or he just forgot about it and ask us to come in. She said I don't know but he is not here that's why we can not see you, we will call to reschedule". I asked for the Asian girl that I spoke with over the phone (which I think was the first girl who spoke with me when I got to the office). She said "she is gone for the day" but her body language was not supporting her statement. Surprisingly Dr. Levitt came out of this room (as per assistant he was not in the office) which was about 10 feet away from the reception area and said (yelled) " HEY STOP YELLING AT MY STAFF". In my mind I was thinking who is this guy and he added " I am Dr. Levitt and I can't see you today." I asked "your assistant checked with you and ask us to come in". He said "I have another client at 1 so I can not see you and you need to leave the office". So the assistant lied about him not being in the office. He might have been listening to the whole conversation but did not bother to come out and handle it professionally but decided to come out like a high school hunk and start yelling. Reading few of the other reviews kind of gives the same impression about customer service skills of this office. As I said in the beginning it was my mistake to forget the appointment but once the staff asked us to come-in, specially after checking with the doctor, then things should not have been handled the way they were handled. I was referred to Dr Levitt by my general physician. He took time, explained everything so i felt i was in good hands. I saw him at Monpelier drive. Also the receptionist Mimi was extremely friendly. so overall a very good experience. But i must admit that it is easier to be positive when the doctor gives you good news, which was the case for me. i give him 5 stars for giving me his expert opinion during a friendly conversation. this is different to give 5 stars for bringing someone back to good health. read more

Dr. Levitt is terrific - smart, kind, patient, and has a sense of humor which counts for a lot considering the subject matter. He is very inquisitive and never rushes while answering all my questions and concerns. No one wants to have a colonoscopy, but if it's your turn (and please don't put it off) I can't imagine anyone better than him. He makes the whole experience as pleasant as possible...right down to explaining what he's seeing and doing while he is 'in' there if you're interested. I think so much of him that even though I now live on the East coast and have plenty of great doctors nearby, when it came time for my next colonoscopy I flew across the country specifically to have him do it again. Hard to top that for a recommendation :) Oh, and his office team (including the surgery center staff) is really good too..everything from scheduling to billing has always been a breeze. I was there for my gastric/GERD Problem at San Jose Gastroenterology (SJGI, O'connor Drive with Dr Levitt. The doctor was so rude and impolite and did not discuss my problems and did not give and suggestions for the problem. I just wasted 160 dollar within five minutes. He did not give any suggestions to relieve my pain and further treatment. I will never go there and and recommend to any of my friends and colleges. The doctor has to learn on how to behave the patients well. Doctors's behavior relieves 50% pain of the patients. Bye ! bye !! Dr Levitt. read more

Dr. Levitt is the most pretentious doctor I have ever been to. As I was telling him about my symptoms, he would cut me off as if to say get to the point. He acted like he was a know it all and even put down other doctors that I had seen. I went to see him for one problem and left with the same problem with no relief from him and I was just blown away and how bad his behavior was toward a patient. Do not go to this doctor. Sorry...when a dr spends about five or ten minutes the first time and then basically brushes you off back to your GP and doesnt seem interested it is time to move ON!!!
