I went to visit Dr. Spencer about 2 months ago for various stomach problems. I've had IBS for at least 30 years, and it seems I may also be lactose and gluten intolerant as well... I'm on a very strict (and no fun) diet. Dr. Spencer suggested I get a colonoscopy and endoscopy done to overrule anything more serious. I had today both of them done, I was so afraid after reading reviews in general about all the problems people had after having their endoscopy done. I'm not sure what problems they had or which doctors they had, but Dr. Spencer was wonderful, I don't remember anything at all about both procedures. When I woke up I couldn't believe it was over! The prep the previous day was the worst part of everything, I must have gone at least 100 times to the loo! Dr. Spencer is an excellent doctor and great listener! Saw him for a consult for a unique problem, he barely skimmed over all the ER visit medical records I sent him ahead of time. Saw him for 10 minutes, prescribed some worthless meds and basically accused me of just having anxiety. Please!!! Do yourself a favor and wait for an appointment with his partner. read more

I was somewhat apprehensive as I wasn't sure I would find one as good as my last one, but have been pleasantly surprised. I saw Dr Spencer based on a referral from my primary care physician and am so glad I did. I had strange symptoms that were getting worse week by week. He recognized the rare condition after asking me a series of questions, scheduled the necessary tests to confirm it, and helped me find a fantastic surgeon to correct the problem. I scheduled an appointment for my husband, Christopher, to see Dr. Spencer as a second opinion. (and soooo glad we did!) First of all, unlike other offices, his front office staff takes the time to listen to you and your specific concerns. Tiffany, I think was her name, was incredibly friendly and helpful. We scheduled to see Dr. Spencer within a week. (that's unheard of in other offices) It was also nice to see the actual doctor and not a PA, NP, etc... I think the front office staff reflects a lot about the doctor because Dr. Spencer took the time to listen to my husband and ordered labs and testing that he felt appropriate. We will be pursuing treatment with Dr. Spencer. The San Jose community is lucky to have Dr. Spencer. read more

I am so thankful for Dr. Spencer! I needed a gastroenterology specialist for my father. I researched for a great gastroenterology doctor, who not only excel at what he/she does but also needs to be compassionate and patience in treating the patients. In my research, I came across a doctor who had great reviews and no public records actions under the Medical Board of California. I called the office and found out that doctor retires in the next few weeks and hence not taking in any new patients. I asked the office for another doctor's name. The office staff told me about Dr. Spencer. I thanked the staff and said I would be calling back. I went and did my research on Dr. Spencer. Dr. Spencer graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School of the Medical College of Hampton Roads in 2000 and did his internship at University of Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete his residency and fellowship at the same hospital. I read many reviews about doctor Spencer and checked with the Medical Board of California. I called the office back and made a consultation appointment for my father with Dr. Spencer. My father never had a colonoscopy done, previously. He was also adamant about not having one done on him. This was I believe due to a previous eye-surgery procedure he had done many years before and the doctor who performed the surgery, in conjunction with the anesthesiologist had my dad under the general anesthesia too long. When my dad came out of the surgery, he had urine retention and ended up in the ER. Needless to say, my dad did not want to be put under for any procedures. We arrived at Dr. Spencer's office. The front office staff, Julie and Grace were very nice and welcoming. We then met nurse Jennifer, who also took the time to listen to our concerns. We met Dr. Spencer next. We explained why we were there at the office. Dr. Spencer listened to our background information about my father's health history. We explained our difficulty in getting our father to do the colonoscopy procedure. Dr. Spencer took the time to explain to my father about the need to get this done. Dr. Spencer said that we had done the least invasive procedure of FIT and now the only next option would be colonoscopy. Dr. Spencer explained the risks and benefits of the procedure to my father and how the most difficult part would be the prepping for it. Dr. Spencer took the time to talk with my dad and listened to my dad's concerns. Miraculously, Dr. Spencer convinced my dad and the procedure would be scheduled for the following week. The day of the procedure, I saw Dr. Spencer and expressed how my dad was feeling a little apprehensive. Dr. Spencer reassured us and said it will be fine. The surgery center was running a little behind but we continued to be updated about the delay. My father finally was being rolled into the room and I was able to go with him until they close the procedure room and asked to wait for my father outside. The procedure took about 25 minutes. I think it took this long because my father had a few polyps. Dr. Spencer stopped by to see my father and me in the recovery room. He went through the procedure verbally with me and informed me that the polyps will need to be sent to the lab so the pathologist can take a look at them. Dr. Spencer also had the report of the procedure ready and pointed to the pictures to indicate the areas of the polyps. The surgery center called the following day to check up on my father. I also left a message with the front office at Dr. Spencer's office to ask about one concern I had. That was on Friday. Dr. Spencer called me back Sunday's night and we spoke about my concern. Dr. Spencer followed up on my father's conditions most consistently. My father felt great and was very thankful for Dr. Spencer. We totally trust Dr. Spencer and we thank God for having Dr. Spencer as my father's gastroenterology specialist. Words alone cannot describe our gratitude to Dr. Spencer! Thank you, Dr. Spencer for giving us our dad back-healthier than before and of course polyps free. read more

Went in for consulation regarding pending colonoscopy. Dr. Spencer was very straightfoward and personable. I was not kept waiting at his office and the staff was helpful. I believe that in early 2013, Dr. Spencer's inexperience may have prevented my daughter from getting better service. He kept her on prednosone too long. (Later, another doctor prescribed Humaria. It helped without as many dangerous side effects.) Dr. Spencer ordered tests that have already been done by another doctor. This delayed important treatment. He requested too many return visits. His overworked staff did not have the time to confirm which tests were on file. The staff never called to confirm appointments. This resulted in a bad mix-up and more delay in treatment. I am thankful that this receptionist wasn't working there the following month. read more

I had been misdiagnosed by another doctor and went to Dr. Spencer. He listened, examined, and an initial diagnosis followed by testing proved he was correct. I had questions about all of it and he answered everything in plain English. I use an OTC medicine and feel so much better! read more

Dr. Spencer has remedied a swallowing challenge (esophageal stricture) I've been dealing with for more than 10 years. He's a great doctor, studied and personal (always willing to educate me a bit about the science - and scientific names - of the inner universe of the body). He did the procedures masterfully, nailed the diagnosis and prescribed a treatment that seems to have cured me of my problem.
