Words cannot fully express how wonderful the staff at Briarcliff are. My dad was there for three weeks, and the care he received was nothing short of exceptional. A special thank you to Carla, Danielle, Linda, and Charlene and V -- each of you made such a meaningful difference. All the staff are wonderful!!! The team goes above and beyond; they are not only attentive and compassionate, but they truly make you feel like family. It brought us so much comfort knowing he was in such kind and capable hands. My mom had a stroke and became very disabled and challenged over a couple of months. It was very challenging for our small family to accept these changes so quickly. Briarcliffe has been wonderful helping my mom heal and move forward on her journey of healing. I am so grateful to the staff at Briarcliffe for helping my mom and our family. I thank Carla so much. Yelp has asked me a number of times to review Briarcliffe. I would like to clarify that I am speaking as a healthcare professional who has worked at various facilities in RI & MA, and NOT on behalf of Briarcliffe. I also noticed a lot of the people posting have multiple negative reviews, which I believe is very telling. While I understand that emotions can run high when a loved one is in a facility after an illness/injury, it is important to approach reviews from an educated perspective. Unfortunately, healthcare entities like Briarcliffe cannot defend themselves by posting medical documentation or background due to HIPAA regulations, it is essential to understand that healthcare entities are not permitted to discuss personal information, which is a Federal Law and not a rule established by Briarcliffe or other entities. If you have any questions regarding this law, I encourage you to refer to the following link: https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-individuals/family-members-friends/index.html -Regarding claims of the facility being dirty, while I acknowledge that there may be areas in need of paint or updating, I do not believe that faded paint or a crack in the wall from a wheelchair should be deemed as indicators of poor cleanliness or quality of care for any facility.  - The accusation that staff passed Covid-19 to a patient is disheartening and potentially libelous, especially considering the multiple accusations about other facilities by the same poster. Please note that employees at Briarcliffe are fully vaccinated, adhere to mask-wearing, a health questionnaire, and temperature check is performed for all staff every shift, as an extra precaution for patient safety.  This is not mandated by the state. Unfortunately, while visitors are encouraged to wear masks, it is not required, and they can potentially introduce germs to the facility. - Patients are not pushed out. Length of stay is determined solely by the patient's insurance coverage. When insurance sets a discharge date, patients are given the option to appeal or pay privately for continued care. As someone who worked in appeals and grievances within the insurance industry for almost 17 years, I know how difficult it can be to win an appeal.  - It is important to note that Briarcliffe is not a hospital and does not have an on-site laboratory or imaging center. As is the case in most skilled nursing facilities, medical providers outside SNF's may require additional time to schedule appointments and obtain test results, similar to the process for patients receiving care at home. - I would like to include that state survey agencies conduct annual health inspections at nursing homes, including Briarcliffe. Additionally, they investigate valid and concerning complaints. My grandfather had to come here for rehabilitation in October and November of 2023. He had a room across from the therapy room and was the only patient in the hallway he was in. The room was large. It was easy to go and visit and they never saw an issue with all his visitors-sometimes up to 10 of us! I was there many times when he would have PT and the therapists were great. The cnas were excellent. To leave the second floor you need to have a nurse with a key to the elevator see you out. Loved the safety measures for those patients looking to elope. read more

I am a former employee of briarcliff and I decided to leave because my religion was discussed behind my back-some of the workers wondered if I was a Satan worshipper because my love of taking pictures of cemeteries. A bunch of grown women did this. These are people I thought I could trust. I also tried to have a conversation about patient care with the head nurse and was met with disrespect and talked down to like I was less than her. I am a team player and some of the employees do not put the patients care first. read more

I entrusted my beloved father into the care of this rehab facility after he had a partial hip replacement. I wish I never had. His surgeon ordered his hip abductor pillow on at all times while in bed - awake or asleep. Every morning I came in, it was laying behind a chair. Also he was a 'max assist' meaning more than one person to transfer him from bed to chair. Or vise versa. I came in and witnessed 'Brian' trying to pick him up to put him on his bed. I grabbed his legs and helped him as 'Brian' almost dropped him. I came in the next evening to find my father so over medicated that he was 'reading writing on the ceiling' when I asked him what he was saying. The ultimate was when I got off the elevator and heard him screaming for help. I walked in to find his leg ,where the partial hip replacement was done, was hanging off the bed. (Again - no hip abductor pillow in place) I immediately called the Johnston rescue to take him back to the hospital, as I thought the hip replacement had been compromised . After they did x-rays, they found a hairline fracture in the pelvis WHICH HE DID NOT HAVE when he was discharged from the hospital. Did they drop him ? He passed away 4 days after I removed him from that HOLE . Dehydrated from no one monitoring his intake of food or water . The doctors told me 'the next 48 hours will tell, as his kidneys took such a hit'. The orderly's do not speak fluent English and communication was difficult . And I know this post will get some generic response from the owner/administration to cover their neglect. Please don't even bother. You should be shut down. read more

2021 my grandmother passed from getting covid there twice and effected her heart and promised her there were plenty of activities to do which was a lie at the time,I've been in the medical field 20yrs and always cared about who I was around and my belief is u get what you pay for,these people are around are most vulnerable loved ones and you would think they would be more careful when they leave the facilities read more

I sent an email 2/28/22 to both the nursing manager and the owner, but have yet to get a response. My father had been in their care for a few weeks, but we were noticing some regression in this physical symptoms and also a decent into depression. I called to check on him on 2/26/22, but the nurse hung up on me three times in a row when I pressed for information. I went to the home myself to make sure he was being cared for, but the nurse (Marie) who had hung up on me that morning intercepted me and refused to leave me alone with my father. I was understandably frustrated at Marie's unprofessional and cruel behavior. Unbeknownst to me, Marie had requested the nursing supervisor, Debbie, confront me. Marie told Debbie that I was the one who hung up on her and was simply a loose-canon head-case that needed to be "dealt with". Given pre-existing pathological conditions, I immediately descended into a panic attack from the gaslighting. The entire staff at Briarcliff did not recognize my mental distress as a medical emergency and instead threatened to call the police if I did not leave immediately. Both Debbie and Marie were inept at defusing the situation and instead chose to escalate it. At no time did Marie admit her cruel behavior, and at no time did Debbie doubt Marie's denial. I also asked about a fresh laceration on his shin, how a CNA had cut him while putting him in a wheel chair, and how he was left for 6 hours to bleed out. He had requested a bandage to clean it himself if the staff couldn't help, but that request was denied. Both Debbie and Marie tried very hard to tell me it was a wound he had arrived with 3 weeks ago, and could not explain the photographs we had showing no laceration the previous day. How they treated me as a visitor and loved one was appalling, but the treatment of my father as a resident was much worse. The gaslighting started the first day and lasted until they sent him back to the hospital for acute hyponatremia. His discharge summary sited sepsis as his reason for discharge, which is laughably inaccurate. Once he was back in hospital care, we were able to understand that Briarcliff had made such drastic changes in his medication without cause, that it was surprising he was still alive! It's no wonder Briarcliff (despite HIPAA laws indicating otherwise) refused to give me access to my father's medical records even after he had given his consent. He's home now, Thank God, but it's going to take us quite a while to pour through his records and find exactly what happened. Something like this should never be allowed to happen! read more

Shortly after a fall and surgery, my cousin was transferred to Briarcliffe for rehabilitation and physical therapy with the goal of returning home. On January 3rd, my son visited her at Briarcliffe and noticed that she was very lethargic and breathing rather heavily. He brought this to the attention of the nursing staff and was told that "her anxiety is acting up a bit" and this was the reason why. He called to tell me and express his concern but the nurses said they were keeping an eye on her. The following day, January 4th, we noticed the same issues but worse. In addition, she was extremely disoriented and confused as well as still having breathing issues. Again, this was brought to the attention of the nursing staff who said that this is very common after a major surgery and there was nothing to be concerned about because they were monitoring her (which, clearly, they were not). On Saturday January 6th, I went to visit her. Upon entering her room, I saw that she was half hanging off the bed in a t-shirt and a dirty diaper which her roommate confirmed had not been changed since the early evening hours of the night before. This was around noontime. She was barely conscious and fighting for every breath. I knew something was very wrong and immediately went to get a nurse. The nurse told me again that this was "normal" and to be expected after a major surgery. It was not normal! The nurse said that they were planning on getting an inhaler for her to help with her breathing and that a doctor would be in to check on her shortly. She also said that physical therapy would be in to work with her shortly. I asked her how on earth she could do physical therapy when she is barely conscious and clearly cannot breathe! She said do not worry we are monitoring her and a doctor will check on her shortly. Unfortunately, I had to leave for another appointment and to this day I will regret that forever. Around 9pm on Sunday Jan 7th I received a phone call from a doctor at Briarcliffe stating that "they had noticed a change in Diana's respiratory status and that her vitals were not good at all so they were sending her back to the hospital". Oh, you mean the change in respiratory status that happened on Wednesday Jan 3rd, 4 days ago that we told you about for the last several days in a row??? About a half hour later I received a call from Roger Williams Hospital emergency room doctor telling me that our family should get there immediately because Diana was gravely ill and probably would not survive the next hour. By some miracle and excellent care, she did survive until January 11th but she was so sick by the time she got to the hospital that there was no hope of survival. She had fluid in both lungs, congestive heart failure, a horrible UTI (which explains the confusion that began on January 3rd) and was septic on top of recovering from a major surgery. I am not a doctor but I have no doubt that had she received the proper care at Briarcliffe and been monitored appropriately and treated accordingly that Diana would still be with us. Because she was absolutely neglected, she is now gone. Had she been sent back to the hospital on the 3rd or 4th or even the 5th maybe she would have had a fighting chance. Clearly no one was taking her vitals regularly which would have been a clear indication that things were going downhill. They were not even cleaning her! Sitting in a shitty, urine filled diaper for over 18 hours is inhumane. Like I said, she was half hanging off the bed in a t-shirt that was up around her neck, barely conscious and barely breathing on the 6th. Why on earth would they not "notice the change in her respiratory" status until 9pm on the 7th? It had been happening since the 3rd! This type of "care" is completely negligent. We trust our loved one to these places to be cared for when we cannot do it and this is what happens. They end up dead. I am filing this formal complaint because I hope to God this never happens to another family. Although I believe you already have another complaint for a friend's dad that a hauntingly similar situation happened at the same place. Clearly if you are paying the 15,000 a month to be in the other parts of Briarcliffe, you receive the 5-star care that they tout in all their commercials on TV. If you are just a regular person stuck in the nursing/rehab facility, no one cares. They just ignore you and leave you to die. read more

Briarcliff has to be one of the worst places I have ever delt with. I asked for my paperwork, that I signed because I had talk to an elder affairs lawyer and she reported they are known to force the individuals who sign the patient in to pay if they have dementia. Well I closely looked it over and she was right. Over 300.00 a day. When I requested it they stated either leave or we will call the police and have you taken away. They are rude and sneaky and added more stress to an already difficult situation. I wish I could hold them legally responsible for the mental anguish they have put me though. I will never have any family member stay in this facility. read more

Family member was transferred there for rehab. The rooms are dirty, walls dirty, the food was lukewarm at best. We found out after she left stuff had gone missing from her belongings. You call and you can never ge​t straight answers from anyone. For a place that claims they pride themselves in memory care the staffing in the rehab section needs some retraining. ​Less than a week there I was told she was ready to go home, she was by no means ready to be on her own at home. The first sign of any of the behaviors of patients who have memory care needs they did not bother to look into. Never question anything because they made ​sure the first chance they had they ca​lled a rescue and got rid of her from their facility. Come to find out she had gotten a UTI while there which was causing these behaviors. Had they taken the time to look at these common behaviors of a UTI it could have been treated. Was also never notified that my family​ member had fallen. Families are already going through enough having to deal with aging loved ones. To think they're making the best decisions for them only to find out it was a big mistake. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. First of all the LPN that checked me in when I got there had no paperwork and seemed incredibly unprepared to admit me to the rehab. He knew nothing about my conditions from the hospital, couldn't tell his right from his left, didn't know what medical terms were and barely spoke English. Many of the staff here did not speak English and one person even had to translate for another girl when she came in my room to answer my light. When I asked questions I was often told "I don't know" or "I'll find out" never to get an answer. The administrative staff and PT/OT were great but that was it. The food was awful. The CNA often left dirty towels in my room/sink and also left my commode with waste in it in my room. I was only here three days before moving somewhere else. I sent a similar review on Google and they said they took offense to my review about the staff not speaking English. read more

EMPLOYEES are thieves! My Father was in this facility for one week back in July. During the week, one of them their CNA's stole his cell phone, and the SIM card!! With the help of the Johnston police dept. we were able to obtain the phone back. The thieve did NOT give back the SIM card. Also, they took it upon themselves to take my Father (who was not in a coherent mind frame) to a Dr appt, without telling his wife or children. We found out after the fact! They never once called to tell us there was an appt, that they were taking him, and did not even inform us after. We found our when we called to ask about something else and it was casually mentioned to us. Management was terrible to deal with regarding the cell phone situation. Total lack of concern or care for us. Terrible place, do not send your loved one here. read more

The people that cared for my father while he received skilled nursing here were great. The one big mistake they made was forcing my father out when they had a flu epidemic in the building. This was against policy and the risk he placed all the residents in his dementia unit at his new assisted living facility. He should've never left because of the flu epidemic but they knew his coverage was up so pushed him out. read more

I'm here at Briarcliffe for a short term rehab stay...and I just want to praise members of the staff...PT & OT are excellent, Tyler, Kristen, Stephanie...the nurses, Danielle for one...there are really wonderful CNA's as well like Ana & Rose - and so many other great, friendly & happy people, also helpful like the social workers and activities people (hello Linda & Rhonda) And with the meals they are very good and tasty, and not too salty as well, they have a staff of good cooks - especially the female cook we had today (5/13) for the lunch menu...she made a seafood chowder that was absolutely excellent! (could've eaten two or three big bowls of it) Also has a nice 'home' feeling - and is also kept clean with no 'strange' smells...however some of the night shift CNAs I've encountered so far could be a little more respectful of the residents (I've personally witnessed this) I realize people have different personalities, 'off' days and might be 'overworked' (and short staffed) but I believe the rudeness I've witnessed has been excessive - some should realize they do not have maybe the overall patience to be a CNA...but overall I recommend this place highly if you are in need of a rehab stay. My loved one received the best care here. The nurses treated us like we were their own family. The administrator was so kind, thoughtful, and as nice and helpful to our situation as could only be imagined in one's dreams. I am taking off one point because the place, while attractive, needs a thorough cleaning of its public spaces, and the food could have been more nutritional, in my estimation. Other than that, I have to say they were phenomenal, at least in MY experience. read more
