I am very thankful to have found a forever vet for my little dachshunds. They helped my little one with her horrible breath and gave her a whole new smile. I took my dog to get spayed yesterday. They sent us home with no pain medicine. I was shocked but thought...well I guess they would know better than me. It's now 24 hours later and my dog has been crying and panting. She has barely moved, and is barely eating/drinking. I called them and asked for help, and they just told me "well the doctor isn't in today, but I'll see if I can get ahold of him" and never called me back! I called a couple other vets and they were absolutely shocked that we weren't given meds to control the pain. They didn't even give us a cone or tell us that she shouldn't lick the incision! Multiple other vets have confirmed this is shocking and a bad business practice. Dogs feel pain too. Could you imagine getting internal stitches with no way to control pain? Now we think an infection is starting and I can't get in to another vet until tomorrow. I will never take my dog back here. If I could give zero stars if I could. read more

If you call regarding a prescription on a day they "don't usually do them" they will be extremely rude to you and tell you that you are tying up their phone lines and interfering with patients being seen due to being short staffed. This rule is not something they will tell you until the end of the call after being extremely rude to you and they do not have a website or webpage with this information on it. Doctor is fantastic. I wish there was such a thing as zero (or perhaps even negative) stars for this site. This review is a year overdue so I apologize for the delay in it. I've been wrestling with not doing one, but feel like people really need to know. We have had our male chocolate Cocker Spaniel (Gordon) since 2008. He is not a pet, he's very much an integral part of our family. I only thank God he is STILL part of our family after trusting Briarcrest Animal Hospital and Dr. Brichler with him. Long story short, months ago Gordon was doing fine until one day (around November) we noticed he was not doing so well. He was about 42 pounds, but had started drinking a lot, urinating a lot, and was developing some issues vomiting after eating. The vet we had always taken him to was out with illness so we went to Briarcrest based on the recommendation of some family friends. Dr. Brichler gave him some meds (for which we were charged a few hundred bucks) and sent him home. Soon after Christmas he was down to about 24 pounds (almost 50% of his body weight) and still not better. We went back to Dr. Brichler and asked him to help Gordon. After some blood tests he diagnosed him with Cushings Disease and said he was diabetic. However, he told us we HAD to treat the Cushings first and get it under control and completely ignored the diabetes. The meds were nearly $100 per month and there was no help beyond that. By the end of January Gordon was down to about 18 pounds and was so weak. Dr. Brichler continued to push the $100 meds and said we may want to consider putting him down. We asked about the diabetes and was told it was the Cushings and it was apparently quite aggressive. Two weeks later Gordon was around 14 pounds. Dr. Brichler said there was nothing more we could do for him and recommended putting him down. For that he was going to charge us $250. My family was in tears, completely beside ourselves and didn't know what to do so we made the appointment for the next weekend. My family and I prayed on it and felt like, as long as Gordon was not in pain or suffering, we couldn't do it. We felt it would be better to let him pass away on his own with us than do that to him. That Saturday I went to an event in a nearby town and thankfully ran into a vet from Purdue University who was doing a fundraiser for autoimmune disorders in canines. I told her Gordon's story and stood there in awe as she said it wasn't the Cushings killing Gordon it was the diabetes. The SAME diabetes our vet told us to ignore and kept selling us boxes of medications that cost a $100 each. She strongly encouraged us to get him to another vet soon. That night I called a relative who worked at an animal hospital thinking it was going to be too hard to get him in. The next day we had an appointment with a wonderful doctor who was so caring and, above all else, honest with us. She said he was within a few days of dying, but wanted to keep him a few nights and treat his diabetes. She said it was the diabetes that was killing Gordon and we HAD to get him some emergent care right away. Two days later they called us and said he was doing well enough to come home. With their expert care he gained two pounds in two days and was more spry than he had been in weeks. Sadly, because of Briarcrest, our Gordon lost his eyesight. The diabetes was too far gone and now our man is blind. We give him two shots of insulin a day and feed him a special diet, but he is doing well. The day we were supposed to pick up his ashes (had we listed to Dr. Brichler) is the day we got him back from the vet that took such good care of him. The Cushings that was so crucial to treat for all that money is not even an issue. Stay away from this place. The guy only pushes meds (expensive ones) and does little to treat the real problems. He stood by and watched Gordon waste away and t hen was going to charge us a small fortune to put him down. read more

Nothing good to say about this hospital! My friend had the following issues: Case #1- Took completely healthy dog in for spay, she came back in renal failure. Died at two years old. Case #2- Took healthy cat in for neuter. He came home acting strange. Two weeks later diagnosed him with double pnemonia. Took him back again and they said they didn't know what was wrong. He died shortly after. Case #3- Took dog in for neuter. Two hours later got a call he died after his neuter. They didn't know why. Won't be a case #4 because the trust in this place is gone. BTW, they didn't offer any compensation or acknowledge fault with any of them. read more

Long overdue post also my boxer aquired a sever in fetched cyst and had to have her back leg amputated. The amputation incision started smelling gross with seepage went back repeatedly pushed meds but she finally crashed as he called it and had to put her down. I seriously think she had sepsis but I put my faith in him and he just kept pushing meds and sending her home. I believe she should of been put on intravenous antibiotics and the decaying tissue removed. I only buy flea med now form there. I lost a beloved fur kid and still grieve today I los read more

Friend's dog was taken in for removal of a tumor-ridden eye. I don't know anything about doing surgery on dogs, but if a human had a tumor in their eye, I'm pretty sure a doctor wouldn't completely remove the eye. Anyways, the surgery was done and the dog came home with my friend. 36 hours after the surgery, the dog was breathing heavily and rapidly through just its nose with increase swelling around its face. Around a total of 4 days after the surgery, the dog couldn't breathe through its nose anymore so it could only breathe through its mouth. The morning of the 4th day after the surgery, the dog was prescribed diazepam. This medication is only used for treatment of anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures. So why was this medication prescribed to a dog as a pain killer after the removal of an tumor-ridden eye? Anyways, the dog started losing sense of direction and was unable to walk. This eventually lead to the dog collapsing, and the dog ended up dying about 3 hours after ingesting the diazepam. This dog has never experienced any sorts of anxiety problems or any other issues prior to this situation as well. The vet prescribed this medication to him, because he said the dog was "stressed and overreacting... and just needs to be calmed down." By the way, even with the tumor in its eye, the dog was still in peak health. I don't know about everyone else who goes there currently for regular checkups, but in dire situations, it seems this vet doesn't know what to do. read more

Here is a copy of a letter I sent to Briarcrest on 08/11/14, of which there has been no response: Dear Dr. Brickler: I have been a loyal client to Briarcrest for over 20 years. I have referred many, many people looking for a quality vet for their animals. Regrettably, there are some issues that we felt needed to be addressed. Maggie (canine family member of Julia Carver) * On July 17th, we brought Maggie in as her eyes and nictitating membrane were red and inflamed in both eyes and were having obvious sight difficulty. After about a 30 second examination and approximately two minutes in the room, we were told it was allergies. When we tried to have our concerns and possible other causes addressed, we were told, "Nope, its allergies. I've treated 12 dogs for this exact same thing today" and were basically brushed off. Maggie was given an allergy shot and we were given drops to put in her eyes twice daily. We did not receive any further instructions as to how long to wait for medications to take effect. We were there a total of 10 minutes from the time you entered the room until checkout and leaving your facility. * Maggie went blind on the evening of July 26th. Her eyes were still extremely red and inflamed. We brought her to an ER vet on the 27th. We were told that she needed to see an eye specialist about her eyes as they did not have the equipment there to diagnose her condition. They referred us to another vet with specialist qualifications. * We went to the referred vet July 29th. After an extensive examination, it was determined that what she has is systematic and one of three things; bacterial infection, fungal infection or something more serious, such as cancer (most likely lymphoma). As we could not afford the very expensive bloodwork and x-rays, we decided to try to treat her as if it were a bacterial infection for a period of 1-2 weeks to see if there was any improvement. She was given more eye drops, antibiotics and several other medications. We were told that if this infection is bacterial and can be treated, she most likely would have regained some sight (not all) if it had been caught earlier. We made the checkup appointment for 2 weeks. * August 6th, one week later (one week earlier than planned), we brought her back to that vet as her eyes had started bulging. Upon reexamination, she was no better, but no worse. The bulging was due to the eye pressure. As a last ditch effort, treatment was altered to include oral steroids. If in two weeks she is no better, then we will know she is not responding to treatment and we will have to have her euthanized. She is now permanently blind. Ellie (canine family member of Stacy Burris, sister of Julia Carver) * Mid-May, Ellie was brought in due to a hypoglycemic episode. Blood work was done and it was found that her liver enzymes were 10 times the norm. (These same enzymes were extremely elevated at her checkup the previous year.) She was given liver medication to see if they would help. However, liver disease was never mentioned. * At this same visit, Ellie's heavy panting was questioned by my sister, wondering what the cause could be as she didn't feel this was normal. She asked if it could be a possible collapsed trachea. You told her that it was allergies and instructed her to give Ellie Benadryl. * July 20th my sister and I rushed Ellie to an ER vet due to gastrointestinal issues. While waiting for the ER vet to come into the room, I noticed a "thumping noise" in her panting. When the ER vet came in to question us on the reason for the visit, she noticed her breathing/panting and the noise Ellie was making while doing so and examined her. We were told that she had a collapsing larynx, which is common in Labrador retrievers. We were told that was not treatable for Ellie due to her age and condition. The ER vet also stated that this condition had been going on for quite some time. Due to the eventual larynx collapse, it was decided to euthanize Ellie to avoid further suffering and possible suffocation or asphyxiation. As you can see by the above, there have been two severe misdiagnoses on two of our family's beloved pets with dire outcomes in the last several months. This is just too much. All this is to show you that you need to slow down and take time with your animal patients to correctly diagnose conditions and to address their owners concerns and questions, just like you used to. Unfortunately our faith in you and your practice has diminished to the point that we will no longer be using you for veterinary care. ***NOTE: We had to euthanize Maggie on 08/20/14*** read more

Went to the vet from Banfield in Petco when my bulldog's face started swelling to about the size of softball under his jaw. They charged us for all sorts of blood tests and eventually said that they would have to do exploratory surgery starting at around 750 not including anesthesia, which is extremely dangerous to the breed and would be over 2 weeks out. We found Dr. Brichler while scrambling to find a quicker way to have him seen as his face kept getting bigger. Talk about a miracle! He got our bullie in right away, and found the problem in like 5 minutes. It was a wood chip he got in his skin. He pulled it out with a syringe, drained the wound a little, gave us medicine, and the next day our dog was already looking normal and all for under 200 (medicine included). He is hands down the best vet and we won't go anywhere else.....ever. read more

For me, i want a vet that looks like he enjoys his job and wont jerk you around doing unnecessary things and this place is it. Reasonable prices as well. My family has been going here since 1998. When I moved here, of course, I took my pets here as well. Dr. Brichler is absolutely wonderful to any animal that he sees. He will go out of his way to provide the care and attention to the animals who need it. He has went above and beyond to help a few of our families pets and we are still so grateful for him being there. His prices are very reasonable and he never does unnecessary tests or treatments. His staff is always so helpful and friendly. I can't see myself ever going to another office for my pets. Even when I go up to Chicago for school, I will drive the 3 hours to have my pets seen by him. read more

This Vet "lost" my dog's records, after misdiagnosing a serious illness. We had been treating the pet with very expensive medicine which was not needed. Moved to a new vet, stopped the medicine, and the pet improved greatly. I have zero confidence in this establishment. read more

Everyone thinks Dr. Brichhler is a great vet. People that arent in veterinary medicine dont know the difference. If everyone that goes there see what goes on behind scenes, knows the deaths and the cause of the deaths, see your pets bloodwork you would thinks else wise. When a dr leaves a pet in the back with 2 legs that the dog is chewing off and leaves it for tomorrow is not a vet. I could go on and on but it will catch up with him soon enough. The word needs spread otherwise more animals are going to suffer. read more

Dave Brichler and staff are compassionate, professional and amazing. We moved to the area in 1996 when Dr. Brichler was just starting his practice. Through the years he has been with us during various illnesses, accidents and unfortunately deaths of our many Labrador Retrievers. He has met us at the clinic in -10 degree weather at 4am or worked us into his schedule when there has been an emergency. We recently had to put our two 13 year old Labs down exactly two weeks apart. It was a difficult month, however, the staff's compassion made a horrible situation tolerable. Dave is a "straight shooter" and will tell you like it is. We appreciate his honesty and wisdom when it comes to caring for our pets. I have recommended Dr. Brichler for years and will continue to do so in the future. read more

I give this place a one star because I cant give it a negative number. I went here with my son to have his pit bull Baby put to sleep because she had cancer and was getting very ill. We paid an additional 100.00 on top of the cremation fee to get her ashes back. After a couple weeks we called to ask where her ashes were and the person who answered the phone said we have that down as just a regular euthanasia and cremation. I stated that we had paid the additional to a get Baby's ashes back, which I was then put on hold for 12 minutes because apparently they didn't know how to tell us they had royally messed up. They took my phone number and said they would call me back. A couple hours later the doctor calls me back and proceeds to tell me a story about how they had freezer issues and he had to take some of the dogs to his house to use his freezer and we would have babies ashes by Thursday, well I told him I wasn't sure if I believed that since they had all ready said they messed up and didn't want to receive a random bag of ashes. So I called back and said we would like to come in and verify that they still had Baby and it would be her ashes we were getting, I was on hold for another 7-8 minutes then the office manager proceeds to get on the phone and tell me the vet LIED TO ME, THEY DIDN'T HAVE BABY STILL AND WE WOULD NOT BE GETTING HER ASHES BACK!!! SO THE DOCTOR DID NOT HAVE THE BALLS TO GET BACK ON THE PHONE WITH ME AND TELL ME HE TOLD ME A BALD FACE LIE. Now I have to figure out what I am going to tell my son since he had been looking at urns for her ashes and had picked out one with a pit bull standing on it and was going to have her name engraved on the urn. My sister and daughter both take their animals to this vet but have now said they wont be going back. And I wonder now how many other people have received random bags of ashes thinking they were getting their loving animals ashes back!!! They said they would be sending out a full refund check like that will make up for what they did and then lied about it on top of that, so I would think twice before I ever used this vet!!!!!
