When you come from a small town where the mall options are literally sparse, Briarwood Mall feels like Mall of America lol. Visited here with my hubby while in town for the Michigan rivalry game with Ohio. The mall almost reminded me of the Orlando mall attached to the airport. List of shops full of life here, lots of places to buy merch for MU (although expensiveeee) We even bumped into The Grinch who deserved an Oscar award for his performance. Briarwood Mall has been around for decades and is Ann Arbor's single traditional shopping mall (ie. not a strip mall). No strong feelings for or against it other than the sentiment against the perpetual growing potholes in the parking lot that were mostly paved over several years ago, though Michigan winters love to keep regrowing those cracks and divots. Many years ago when they first opened it contained four major department stores, which also make up the main wings: Sear's, Hudson's, JC Penny and Lord&Taylor. Gradually, L&T moved out and Jacobson's moved in, declared bankruptcy in 2002 and was replaced by Von Mauer. Hudson's also transitioned to Marshall Fields (owned by Target then) around 2002-03, then was bought by Macy's (Federated) several years later. The mall itself also transferred ownership to the Simon Group. The other stores have also come and gone, notably the ones that stuck around are: Express, Victoria's Secret, American Eagle, Ann Taylor, Coach, Bath and Bodyworks, Champs, Chico, Claire's, Eddie Bauer, Foot Locker, Forever 21, Hot Topic, JCrew, LensCrafters, Lids, Kay Jewelers, PacSun, PearlVision, Sunglass Hut, Talbots, White House/Black Market. California Pizza Kitchen, Chipotle, Cinnabon, Auntie Annie's Pretzels, Mrs Fields, Red Robin, Pinkberry, Panda Express, Totally Tea, Rally House, PF Chang's, Sweeting and Texas de Brazil are the main food vendors here. There used to be a Macaroni Grill on the corner of the mall separate from the main building too. Some of the less fortunate retailers who've cycled out include Olga's Kitchen, the original locally owned theater in the mall, Things Remembered, Structure, Carlton Cards, Abercrombie, Nine West, Banana Republic, Perfumania, Godiva, and I'm sure plenty more. The exterior of the mall is pretty dated though the interior got a refresh around 10 years ago. The overall layout is the same, they replaced flooring, fixtures, furniture. read more

Not many malls have survived the changes but this mall has pretty much every store that I like. Easy to find parking and they also have a Len's Crafter for all optometry needs. I like the Von Mauer that we enjoy shopping at. Nice clean and organized. read more

Briarwood Mall is a good mall for Ann Arbor residents. Compared to most shopping malls today on the verge of closing, Briarwood still has several anchor stores, Macy's and JCPenney, along with smaller stores throughout the mall, including Coach, Ann Taylor, Apple, and J.Crew. The main reason I visit Briarwood Mall is to shop at Macy's. This Macy's is my favorite in SE Michigan. It has a lot of sales for clothing and shoes. There are also restaurants like Texas de Brazil, Chipotle, California Pizza Kitchen, and P.F. Chang's. I am optimistic that Ann Arbor has enough students and high earning professionals that Briarwood Mall will last longer than malls in other cities. read more

Spent some time here as it was near our hotel when visiting AA, we appreciated the cleanliness, diversity of store offerings, snack options. Found some good sales/deals and really enjoyed the NTVES art work store. read more

Briarwood is a great place to come to hit all of the stores in one spot. It's worth the 40 minute drive from my house. Briarwood is located off State Street and I-94 in Ann Arbor. I can hit stores for my daughter, for my son, for me and my boyfriend. This is one of the malls that is still thriving through the online shopping of today. PF Changs is located at this mall, which the entire family loves! There are numerous restaurants and hotels in the area, in one of the most loved city in America: Ann Arbor! read more

This place used to be somewhere you could shop, take the kids, waste an afternoon. It's a shell of its former glory. There are always lots of closed businesses, the bathrooms are dirty, the play place is horrible. Peeling paint, no soap, nothing to do. Coming here feels depressing now. Not a big mall, but good enough. They have several nice stores. WHBM, PB, Macy's, altar'd state, Apple, coach. The mall isn't heavily packed for a Saturday afternoon. It's easily walkable. The lower bowl is where the bulk of folks are in here. They can get Starbucks or Wetzel's pretzels. There is no food court here, that's odd for a mall. read more

The only reason I came here was to find the Gashapon machines. After seeing videos on YouTube of them in Japan I was surprised to find on the official Bandai website that they apparently were located in this mall, and were the only place in Michigan that they were! However since no one else mentioned them in any reviews or photos or anything, it took me a minute to find them. They're in front of Zumiez if you're going there for them, like I did. read more

I wanted to check out a new mall to visit since I was in the area. This mall is so beautiful inside, especially checking out all the sky lights. This place is full of great lights, it's spacious too so it's great for everyone so they can stay socially distant as well. They offer a fair variety of stores too. What I will say this mall lacks are restaurants / food establishments. They're essentially scattered through out the mall. I do like that they do have a wine to go place though. Lol...no. Just went here with my boyfriend. Walked into a few shoe stores...DTLR and whatever is across from it. Zero customer service. Workers were on personal phone calls, offered no help. Their JC Penney managed to find a way to cut costs by not using air conditioning in their store. It was suffocating to walk around in there and made me feel faint after a few minutes. We decided to make a quick pit stop at the restrooms next to the B12 shot store before leaving... the maintenance company subcontracted by the mall had shut down the Family bathroom and the Womens bathroom but the mens was open. I was joined by a female Macys employee who also was waiting to use the womens restroom. We were told the floor was wet and to wait... floor was immaculately dry. There was no worker in there cleaning. Honestly I'm unsure why it was roped off. I'm not from this area. I don't know where the next restroom is and I'm not waiting. Two restrooms should not be closed simultaneously during hours of operation. Sorry not sorry. Javier, the manager of the cleaning company, started complaining that we went in there and tried to go in too. My boyfriend stopped him letting him know there were two of us in and to wait. Javier started to go off on my boyfriend- who was already in the men's room when we dipped. Mall needs to figure that out because there was no reason to have the womens blocked off. At all. That was ridiculous. The combative nature of Javier was unacceptable. Please put this company in check as you have employees and customers alike who may have a medical condition and would need access to use facilities and are being barred from doing so. read more

Very neat Mall, don't get fooled by the looks on the exterior, bc on the outside it's 1970's but it's nice and modern on the inside. There is definitely something for someone out here and the options are endless. Only had a few hours to kill before going to another city but it was pleasant and fun! I selected my hotel for a work trip based on its proximity to this mall and also to University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and it was a good decision on my part! I spent a lot of time here shopping at Athleta, Sephora, Victoria's Secret, and the Apple Store. There's a large Starbucks in the center with lots of seating. I also enjoyed Salad's Up, which has juice and smoothies in addition to its namesake (salads.) There's also a salon I considered frequenting that got great reviews but they didn't have any openings the night before that fit with my schedule. It was open, clean, bright, and a nice respite from the cold Ann Arbor air outside. Service was overall very warm and friendly. read more

I have been to various malls and this is no the best not the worst. I work nearby and it has plenty enough stores to get what yo want. My favorite is Macy's because they always have a good sale on Mens clothes. There is also Sears, Jcpenny and Von Mahr. Sears is a grest place to get watches fixed. I also have thought Von Mahr was rather expensive. Not my thing but the U of M store is my thing. They also have a Sushi bar and some good pretzel places. Affitions are PF Chang's and Bravo. The mainstays are California pizza and chipotle. It is a conveinient nice spot to shop when you get the urge or to grab a bite. read more

Not the biggest mall but they have an okay selection of stores. There's a U of M store which is pretty cool and a few shoe stores. Macy's and Sears for the big dept stores and a food court in the middle, which is a pretty convenient setup, but not many restaurants, I think Starbucks and a wetzels and some dessert stuff. Maybe they do this on purpose because the restaurants are kinda on the outer edges, on the Macy's side of the mall. tThey're all decent; Bravo, CPK, PF Changs plus a couple of fast food spots accessible from the outside. Parking is decent everywhere except near the restaurants around dinner time. Other than that. Convenient, right off the freeway and easy to get in and out of. read more

Although this mall is a trek from where I live, I enjoy the atmosphere and variety of stores. One thing for sure is it outshines the aged look of Lakeside Mall, which unfortunately is the mall closest and most convenient to where I live. As I mentioned, the variety of stores seems to be much better due to the fact that it seems to cater to more than just the younger crowd. It has an upbeat vibe which was quite refreshing. We tried deciding on a place to eat in the mall, but unfortunately our group couldn't make a decision. I think it may have been due to the lack of a decent sized food court as you see in other malls. We went into the Apple Store because my daughter needed some advice on a problem with her phone. Although this isn't a review for that store, it was very nice store just as the Apple Store is on my side of town. Considering it's size and the nice feel, it's a pretty good mall to shop in. Briarwood needs a makeover. It has some essential stores but not all. The sprawling *wing* design and too many kiosks are not ideal but you can generally find what you are looking for. Sephora, Apple, Coach, Williams Sonoma, Bath & Body Works; you know, the regular suspects. I would enjoy not being accosted every five feet by a kiosk hard sell. I also think all the vending machines make this mall look tacky as hell. I do like all the places to sit and relax but overall I always feel a chaotic ibe going on here, more so than most malls. I also wish they had a better variety of stores (and better buyers at the flagship stores). Overall it's a typical eighties type mall. read more

Briarwood is a little on the older side in terms of design but it's still pretty good. It's one floor and they don't have as HUGE of a selection as maybe some other malls but they have everything I typically need or shop at--Banana Republic, J.Crew, Loft, Limited, William Sonoma, etc. So for what I need it's more than acceptable. Parking is ridiculous and it's ALWAYS crowded anywhere near Macy's. So I would recommend parking some place else. Sears is usually a ghost town. I hear complaints that they don't have a food court but I really don't think that matters since there are PLENTY of places to grab a bite in the mall (even if they aren't the best, but let's be real, most mall or food court food isn't that sophisticated). I do super dig the Pinkberry in the center of the mall and I've never met a mall pretzel I didn't like. There's been a recent announcement that they're going to give the place a structural facelift and add some more upscale shops like Lush, Michael Kors, etc. That's good news. I hope they give a shot of adrenaline into this shopping center because it's nice to have all these options in my town and I'd hate to see it crumble under its age and wear and tear. read more

Briarwood is to malls as avocado is to appliances. This mall has improved since I first encountered it in 2001, when it was beleaguered with a sunken pit design reminiscent of your parents' 1972 key party. However, even the modernization can't disguise the aggressive retro style of Briarwood, which I hear was designed by the architectural genius Mike Brady. There's actually a decent selection of stores here, although Von Maur confuses me and I wish Ann Taylor Loft would replace ONE of the many stores catering to the teen crowd. The mall is peppered with kiosks staffed by aggressive salespeople who will try to convince you your curls are so hideous that they MUST be straight ironed RIGHT NOW (no thanks!). The little penned in area near JC Penney with plastic sculptures for kids to climb on is my least favorite area of the mall; let's just say it's well used. The food options in this mall are so bad that CPK shines among them like a five star gourmet bistro. I think the second tastiest option might be Arby's. It's certainly not the sushi place. Yeah, a sushi place in an outdated mall in the midwest. Can't you smell the fresh fish? read more

Compare to other malls in Southeast MI, this mall is probably the worst. The whole place needs a make-over! Merchants turnover rate is kind of high... it seems like they have stores closing and another one opening. The parking lot needs to be broken up and redone. There's too many holes, uneven spots, lines are not visible, etc. They make money off of this place, why can't they put some back in to reinvest into the mall? read more

I take an exercise class that meets at the mall three mornings a week. There are a few carpeted areas where we can lay down towels and do our floor work, and some of the walls around the sculptures are a good height to do push-ups. I think that's good. The only drawback is that we're only allowed to 'power walk,' no running in the mall, even when it's not open yet. Frequently after class we'll head to the play area to help the kids burn off some energy. The play area is very nice. The floor is slightly squishy so it doesn't hurt as much when they fall, and there are things of all different heights for any size kid to climb. Just outside the area there are a few coin operated ride on things as well. Top it all off with some zucchini fries at Olga's and I've had a great morning. The window shopping has come in handy for knowing what I want to check out later too. read more

I find myself gravitating to BM when I'm in need to find something quick and always go in having lowered expectations. This mall has definitely been making improvements, slowly, but it seems to have what most other malls carry, ranging from the more affordable stores to higher end ones. Even though I don't go to the mall to eat, I do like the fact that Pinkberry's is there, which reminds me of Cali..high prices for froyo. I remember the first time I came to BM, I did not understand and still don't understand the structure of the mall. I remember feeling turned around and confused every time I wanted to get out. Now that I've lived in Michigan for several years and have visited the mall more than two hand full of times, I feel more confident in knowing which direction to go to find some stores and/or get back to my car. One thing I despise about this mall is the horrendous roads that encompass the mall. But I guess the mall is not the only place, where the roads suck. read more

When your regular mall stomping grounds are Westland Mall (basic blah) and Laurel Park Place (trying to be hoity, but just kinda useless) you look at Briarwood as someplace cool and different. They have the required anchors - Macy's, Penney's, Sears, with a couple curveballs thrown in - H&M, Pottery Barn, Von Maur, Sephora, etc. We specifically came here because 1) we were in the area, and 2) they have an Apple Store (and would be less crazy than Twelve Oaks). I got to snoop through Sephora too, so I was happy to stand in Apple Store for 45 minutes without whining or yawning while Ken and our salesguy debated a replacement Classic ipod or a new Nano. (just yawned now) Parking was alright, but we've learned to park at Sears, no matter the mall, because its the least congested area in the mall lot. read more

I agree with most of the other reviewers. It is a ho hum mall. I felt like I was in my home mall in Reno which is also nothing spectacular. Nothing special, nothing unusual. The stores are the same as any other small town mall anywhere in the US. Now, if there were some unique local interest shops (other than the UM sports store) it would have a higher rating. For unique local items, I would recommend heading downtown. read more

Two stars is generous. I felt it was only fair to add a star because I hate malls to begin with but there are malls, and then there's Briarwood. Here are all the things that make me cringe whenever I find that I have to venture through the glass doors: 1. There are very few places in this mall where ones olfactory glands are not assaulted. From Club Abercrombie (and I don't even go in) to the entryways where the teens and twenty-somethings missed the memo that Axe smells like cheap cologne dying a rotten, putrid death. 2. While I understand that "business is business and business must grow," business might grow better were it not assaulting me. NO, I don't want my hair straightened, eyebrows threaded, to bring home a sugar bear, or to try a cookie. I just want to crawl into one of the mock beds at Macy's and die. 3. I have witnessed some of the strangest conversations and arguments of my life in and near the women's room by customer service. Like, wow... some really strange stuff that sort of maybe almost kind of makes it worth to set foot in this place once or twice a year. Do yourself and your community a favor - shop locally. read more
