I was very rudely accused of shoplifting from Sam's while visiting Ann Arbor. Several locals had recommended the store, so I came in and browsed around for a little while, and then went into the dressing room to try on a pair of shorts. Since the shorts didn't fit me, and there was no rack for discarded clothing, I was trying to be helpful by putting the shorts back on the hanger and back on the rack where I got them from. I then left the store. As I'm walking down the street (I had already turned onto the next block), I hear someone running behind me. Suddenly a hand grabs me by my shoulder and whips me around. It was the 20-something redhead girl who had been working at Sam's. She says "I need to check your purse." I said "Excuse me?" She replied, "I didn't see those shorts you tried on in the dressing room," to which I told her I had put them back on the rack. She said she still needed to check my purse. I opened it to show her there were no shorts. She said "Ok," didn't even apologize, and walked off, leaving me embarrassed and shaken up. And what's worse is that she accused me on the street, in front of a full sidewalk cafe of onlookers. I have never been so humiliated in my life. Two days later when I returned home, I called the shop to see if I could speak with a manager. I left a message with the girl who answered the phone (was probably the same one who accused me), and never heard back from anyone. The most ironic part of the story, though, is that I am a travel journalist who was on assignment to Ann Arbor and was planning to include something on Sam's, since I was told it's an "institution." Needless to say, they will not be included in the story, and they're lucky I'm only publishing this story here, and not on a larger public platform. read more

Glad to know that some old Ann Arbor standbys, like Sam's, never change. It's virtually unchanged in any way from the first time I patronized this store as a teenager. It has been around forever and I appreciate the simplicity of this old school retailer in the middle of all the hipster overload in Ann Arbor. The store looks virtually unaltered by time. They even have a vintage cash register dating back to the '50s, although rest assured, they take credit cards, but they actually still use the contraption to ring up your purchase. The store has been around since the 40s, so it's hardcore nostalgia to be able to shop here. I'm happy Sam's remains in business, especially in today's economy. They carry both men's and women's casual clothing, as well as sunglasses, socks, hats, gloves, scarves and even more. I like their winter gear, pants and flannel shirts. Good quality clothes, but the prices are still on the higher end because of the store's location in Ann Arbor. They have a strange line of what I call the Tim Selleck/Magnum P.I collection comprised of gaudy Hawaiian shirts and assorted ball caps, but I guess they must have some niche market for it somewhere. I ignored the Tom Selleck 80's stuff and focused on the other merchandise. I picked up some quirky Sherlock Holmes socks for $10 a pair here this week. Yep, you could theorize that $10 for a measly pair of socks is a lot, but where else could I get Sherlock Holmes socks? Service was as about as good as I remember it being. The girl that rang up my purchases was very nice. The store looks neat and tidy, so I have no complaints. read more

Sam's is a great spot where you will find the best prices on Converse sneaks in town, hands down. They also have the little baby Converse shoes that are a great non-registry gift for that expecting couple. It's deceptive to say that this place isn't for Miss Fashion Magazine. Because I love me some fashion, but I can still find hidden gems in this place -- like a Levi's skinny for women and the black on white All Stars. They also carry a few of American Apparel's most very basic styles that the retail location doesn't even carry any more at great prices. You'll also be able to grab basics like bandanas, belts, sun hats. They have a collection of old dude fedoras here that look pretty stylin' on the right heads. Look in the back for a gigantic pair of Levi's tacked to the wall. You can fit five people in it! They also have tons of unobtrusive dressing rooms. read more

I'm going to be honest. I am someone who struggles with making good fashion choices. If you know me you know that I am a big fan of grey sneakers and sweatpants. One of the deciding factors of choosing to move to Ann Arbor was that fact that I could really indulge my haphazard wardrobe choices freely with little consequences. That being said, When I was walking down Liberty and saw a store with racks of woolrich flannels and smartwool socks I was excited, to say the least. If you're like me and sometimes "showing up to life" can be difficult and you have a wardrobe that reflects that... Sam's is the place for you. As mentioned, they have a great array of flannels, socks, plain tee's and sweatshirts, beanies, converse and even some small knives (always a good thing). Sam's also has jeans too but if you're like me and want to spring for something a grade above Grand Rapids status in that department, move along. Best of all, the people who work here are great. It's so rare that others encourage my fashion choices and every time I purchase something here I sense a palpable envy from the employees that it is I that now own two Carhartt beanies and not them. I love that. If you stand for what I stand for and believe in sweatpants and very reliable flannels you should come here. read more

Great place with a very straight-forward but high quality selection of clothing. I bought a pair of Levi 511's (skinny jeans for all you hipsters) for 2/3 of what Urban Outfitters charges, and also got an awesome Columbia rain coat off their half-off rack. I love Sam's! They do basics, and they do them well. The have men's and women's tshirts, jeans, and sneakers, basically. They have American Apparel shirts for less than at American Apparel, they've got Chuck Taylors in every color of the rainbow, and they have lots of jeans, though I've never purchased any. Last time we were in, my friend found some Chucks way on sale...there were 2 pairs left and one happened to be her size. Score! I myself have purchased bright green Converse in this very store. Extremely reasonable prices, great selection of basics, and basically a hipster's paradise. Or someone who just wants a freaking tshirt, forcryinoutloud. read more

Sam's is one of my personal favorite Ann Arbor stores. I buy jeans, coats, shirts, gloves, you name it, at Sam's. They have a pretty good selection for the easy-wheelin Ann Arborite. Their prices even compete with online vendors so you don't feel like you have to decide between your money and your support of local stores. The staff is pretty nice, sometimes a bit distracted, but always ready to help. read more

If you are looking for the latest Parisian style clothing, then don't bother going to Sam's clothing. However, if you are looking for some down to earth grungy style clothing, then this is the place. They carry a pretty good selection of men's and women's Converse shoes, Levi's jeans, solid colored t-shirts, and messenger bags. They are also well stocked in outdoor clothings. It's not exactly my style of clothing, but I liked the sales that they have. They have some pretty good sales on Crumpler messenger and camera bags and 50% off hiking shoes and sandals. The prices on the regular sale items are reasonable. Again, their clothes are not of the latest fashion, but good selection for basic style and essentials clothing items. read more

Anytime I'm around downtown Ann Arbor, I inevitably end up stopping off at Sam's. You can find some pretty killer flannels, downright cheap American Apparel stuff (hoodies, shirts, jackets), awesome Wigwam socks, and inexpensive yet reliable basic accessories (gloves, pocket knives, hats, scarves, etc). Really warm sweaters, too. The staff is incredibly friendly. Definitely worth checking out if you've never been there before. read more

I grew up in Ann Arbor, and when I started earning my own money, I learned pretty quickly that Sam's was the place to go for basics. Great selection and prices on Levi's, Converse All-Stars, Flannel and Button down shirts, bandannas, socks...all the basics. The staff has always been real friendly over 30 years I've been visiting. Whenever I visit Ann Arbor now, I stop by Sam's and pick something up, even if just a bandanna. read more

this is a store which grew with me as a person- I remember coming here as a college student, and stocked up on things like sweatshirts and woolen socks when my friends and I were in the "grunge" fashion stage. A few years after when I landed jobs after school, I begin to buy more trendy things- converse sneakers and Nalgene bottles. Yesterday I stopped by to look for a plain long sleeve shirt for my SO; I picked out an old favorite - Hane's beefy tee, a substantial weight staple made with 99% pre-shrunk cotton in a beautiful heathered gray- it fitted like a charm on him. My recommendation is go for the simple but nicely made things and the store will serve you well. read more
