I LOVE this place. The venue is great and the drinks are sublime! It is truly a classy gem in Central Square. Let's start with the drinks - very creative assortment on the menu and if you don't like what you see, you can always ask the bartender to make you something based on what you do like. They have the more speakeasy type of man drinks as well as delicious sweet and fruity drinks (my personal preference). I especially enjoy the Temporary and Fix as well as the Corn n' Oil. Both come with a triangular mountain of shaved ice, so it's like eating/drinking a sweet, fruity, alcoholic snow cone. What adult doesn't enjoy that? And I like that they put a good amount of alcohol into the drink so you're not just drinking watered down syrup. I haven't had the food there but looks typical. The entrance is hidden and there is no sign. It's to the immediate left of the door for Central Kitchen. You go in the door, walk up the stairs, and behold a sizable room with a bar area and tables. If you go for happy hour, you'll have no trouble finding a seat. But as the night wears on, more and more people take up space. I sat at the bar, which was awesome. It never got really loud so I could have a normal conversation. However, if you go really late at night and especially on the weekend, it's hard to find space AND to hear your companions talk. Bottom line: best place in Central Square, hands down. Classier, tastier and more inventive drinks, and perfect atmosphere. Go, you won't regret it. read more

Lovely little spot! This is a small speakeasy with its entrance to the left of a graffiti alley. There was a wait when we went, but they just took our name and phone number and texted us when they were ready. At first, I was a little skeptical of the wait, but after being called back, I was really grateful for small number of people they allow in. The bar has a variety of seating options that allows you to choose whatever atmosphere you're in the mood for. The drinks are really well mixed and you can't really go wrong. We didn't have a chance to try the food, but after seeing multiple people order various menu items, I would definitely go back. The bar is located right by the Central T stop. Went back after a good a year or so and found this bar to be a bit 'to' cool for school.' First off, the bathroom was flooded with urine and no one on the staff seemed to care--on a Friday night--no one cared that a puddle of urine was just sitting there. It not only stinks but also is a hazard to the customers as puddles of urine can lead to slips--come on!! If it was still the Enormous Room, I could understand but not when you are trying to be a swanky spot... The food portions are quite small for the prices and the wine is crap! Our server was great but I do think the staff is thoroughly overwhelmed. After 2 rounds of drinks and apps. we decided to venture downstairs and have an adult meal with proper wine--so yes if you are not a hipster and old enough to remember the days when going out on a Friday night did not entail standing in line (not that we did) to get shit food and service then you may want to stay clear of Brick and Mortar. Really disappointed with the staff. Someone stole my coat, beret and leather gloves last Friday night, and the answers were: "Is the only coat you have?" "You can take this old hat I have here" If they ask you to give your telephone number to enter the place... why not send a text message to all asking if they took someone´s stuff by mistake????? How long has this been here? My friends and I were hanging out in central on a friday. We were going to go try this place first, around 9pm. But there was a LINE. Ok cool kids I get it. So we come back at like midnight and once we found the place (no sign/upstairs - also cool kids) And i'm unsure how to describe it. Is this a restaurant? Is this a bar? Is this a lounge? High tables in the front. by the time we got here no food, so people were half sitting/half standing at these tables. Big bar at the back so it was easy to get drinks. There was a LOT of people but it wasn't so crowded that we could get a drink or felt smushed. This place is kind of a weird addition to central. I feel it's like upscale hipster. Brick and Mortar's strength is varied, well crafted cocktails across a range of spirits in an approachable, neighborhood atmosphere. The cocktail list seems to evolve weekly, with frequent appearances of the "Corn and Oil" (a rum-based drink with a mound of ice topped with angostora bitters), and the "10 Cent Loosie" (Vida mezcal, cardamaro, mole bitters), pictured. The bartenders are knowledgeable, thoughtful, no pretentions. The space runs on the dark side (starting with the stairs up to the space) and there is a wall of downlit brick to the left of the bar. In later evening hours, the music will be at a volume loud enough to make conversation very challenging. The space also tends to be kept quite cold, and the copper arched bar chills to the touch. Very good bar food (nice wings!), good drinks, friendly if slightly haphazard service, and a good facelift to the old Enormous Room space. But it's still super loud, and now quite pricey. Admittedly I might be spoiled by living between Union and Inman...if Central were my fallback I think I would grow to like B&M more. But then again, maybe not. I'm in my early 30s and the vibe here made me feel old. I did notice on my credit card statement that it's run through Central Kitchen, which I hadn't realized, and which explains the yummy. read more

I want to like this place more. The food is good, the drinks are excellent. I like the layout and the seating. Brick & Mortar has a lot going for it. What it doesn't have going for it is the service. They're understaffed, so it's slow. And they don't listen well. I was recently there with a group, and when we first ordered, we asked for separate checks. No problem, our waitress said. Fast forward a few hours and we get the bill. One bill. By this point, many people in our group had left. Those that remained had gotten their drinks at the bar (smart), so they were all settled up. We had no way of knowing who, if anyone, hadn't paid. I say "if anyone" because I'm not sure how our waitress decided whose drinks belonged on our bill. We were a large group next to other large groups--it was difficult to tell where one ended and the other began. It's entirely possible our tab had other people's drinks on it. Needless to say, I ended up picking up the shortfall on the bill (my friends offered to help out, but I felt bad since I had organized things). That's only one data point and not enough to scare me off forever, but it is enough to make me think twice the next time. read more

This is my kind of bar. Great cocktail and beer options, knowledgeable staff, lovely bar snacks, eclectic music... I'm currently madly and deeply in love with the "Take Your Top Off." It's simply perfection. Pisco, chartreuse, absinthe, coconut and pineapple. Not too sweet, not too boozy, just amazing. I brought a friend from out of town here and he had a full on bromance with our wonderful bartender, Corey. They talked bourbon, they talked Bob Dylan on vinyl, and I serious thought I would be going home alone. Awesome, personable service here people! read more

I have to say I miss Enormous Room, but once you have one of Brick & Mortar's drinks you'll be happy about the change. I liked the place a lot. It is definitely more a cocktail lounge. The bar tenders are just fantastic and they make good job (I think this is the greatest thing about this bar). The menu is limited but they'll prepare any drink you want. Price per drink is about $ 10 and they are very good. The only cons: I have to say the number of seats is limited. We went on a wednesday and finding seating was challenging. The place has a few tall tables and then a huge amazing fashionably designed bar that ocupies more than half of the pace, but not practically designed for seating customers. I think Central sq needed a higher end cocktail place. It feels like having a drink at the Liberty Hotel or Drinks, but in central! I'll definitely make it a place to go often. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in Cambridge! It has a very sleek atmosphere - dimly lit, copper bar, fancy glasses, etc. It's a great date spot as it's generally a relaxing sit-down kind of place. There's music going to keep you entertained but you can absolutely have a conversation while enjoying a phenomenal cocktail. Additionally, they have decent snack food and even more substantial food if you get hungry. I usually come here at the end of the night to cap off the night when I head back to Central Sq. It's unmarked outside. To access, just go through the door immediately to the left of Central Kitchen and head up the stairs. On weekends there's usually a bouncer outside checking IDs. read more

In my few months living here in Cambridge, my experiences with cocktails thus far have left me... depressed. A friend (also new to Cambridge... let's call her Drinky McGee*) and I have had many sad conversations about how we miss our gin joints from our respective cities, and can't understand why it's so difficult to find a well-mixed drink here. Acting on a tip from one of Drinky's friends, she traveled one late Saturday night to Brick and Mortar. Awakened from my slumber at 11 pm (I'm an old lady, what can I say?), I received a text saying that the secret bar above Central Kitchen is amazing and it's everything we miss about Philly, DC, and NYC. If I weren't so snug in my bed, I would have gone then and there. Yeah, my fleece snow flake pajamas are THAT cool. But I waited a few days to go for a proper date night with my husband. Oh, it was worth it. The atmosphere is low-lit, wooden/brick (go figure), and cozy. The bartenders were friendly and clearly knew what they were doing. AND THEY SERVED MOST OF THEIR DRINKS IN COUPES! IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE! (guy across the bar who asked for his second Manhattan to be served in an old-fashioned glass instead of a coup, I'm judging you... unless you're just prone to spilling. Then it's ok. Coupes for everyone!!!) Onto the drinks - Sister Mary (Tequila, St. Germain, Aperol, Grapefruit) Delicious and smooth. At the end it settled into something a bit too syrupy, but otherwise, enjoyable. I might ask for something similar next time, made with an Islay scotch rather than tequila, to give a bit more of a smokey kick and avoid the syrupy aspect. - 4, 5, 6 (a Scotch-based drink with bitters, can't remember the other ingredients) Had a good taste, again, a bit too heavy and syrupy towards the end. Similar to the Sister Mary, a stronger alcoholic taste would balance it more. - Frequent Flyer (I think this was the name? ginger beer, dark rum, all spice dram, bitters) an interesting blend of ginger and bitters, and the all spice dram cut through to bring everything together nicely. - River Bottom Porter. Yum. We also got a half dozen oysters, because that's how we roll. Glancing around at the food others were ordering, everything looked really good. Especially the hamburgers served next to us - they came out cooked perfectly (we could see this because they requested it cut in half, and we were drooling over redness of the meat. However, I have been here twice, both times having the same male brown-haired waiter, and both times he has been extremely rude to not just me but the entire party. "It's cool because it's unmarked and you don't know if you're going up into someone's apartment" - anonymous Brick & Mortar definitely keeps up that prohibition style vibe - I didn't even learn it's name until the third time I'd been there. The dimly lit heavily bricked nooks are rife for creative spins on old fashioned cocktails and the blasting music ensures no trade secrets are spilled. Alas, with every good scene comes some irritating drawbacks - crowds, spotty service, basically fighting for a drink with overwhelmed servers. And not that I find bar food a necessity - but at a place where you have to come early just to get a spot, I wish they had some more vegetarian friendly options - even the french fries are served with duck. I am amazed this place does not have all 5 stars. I have been here three times in the LAST WEEK ALONE and love it. I also tried to go one other time on a Friday night but it had a line OUT THE DOOR. So this place has friendly, personable people who work here and they make a great drinking/appetizer experience. I told everyone I was running the Boston Marathon and not drinking alcohol anymore after my night out there and everyone was so excited for me and supportive... Bottom line: Go down the street to Green Street, to Hungry Mother, Deep Ellum or any number of other area cocktail joints for a much better experience. The Breakdown: Drinks: Not well-balanced and took way too long to get (~15 minutes). Food: Extremely overpriced and small portions. The waffles in the chicken and waffles were soggy - I could've had better out of an Eggo box. Chicken was one skimpy little drumstick. Brussel sprouts tasted like I was eating a saltlick. Fried polenta sticks were the best thing we had but even those were just ok - I've had a much better version at The Cellar. Flank steak sandwich was fairly tasty but not mind-blowing and very small for the price. Service: Meh. The waitress seemed jaded and disinterested...almost annoyed at having to serve us. Two words: Duck. Fries. AMAZINGLY social, friendly, and most importantly, hospitable staff. I love coming here to catch up with friends in the area or even grab a pint while killing some time. Things to note: Fantastic cocktails that change up regularly. Some of the best food in Central. Great music choices off vinyl turntables from behind the bar. Cheap shooter options. Some people give this place a hard time and make it out to be a pretentious hipster bar or some shit. Truth is, these people are just NOT cool enough for B&M and they know it. I love this place. It screams Cambridge, very trendy and kind of hipster. I love the interior- the exposed Brick walls, bar decor, and dim lighting sets the mood, and the music is great. Perhaps a bit too loud though. I love coming here with one other person because as I mentioned it is very loud so if you have a big group you will probably be yelling at one other trying to be heard. I have not eaten here yet but I have heard good things. I LOVE their cocktails especially their gin inspired cocktails. Their mixologists are the real deal. Very good. I love this place. What a shame I only knew how awesome it was right before I leave Boston. Came here with a friend who raves about this place and finally him and I went. Firstly, I love the interior and yes it's exposed brick. Very nice. The bar is in a u shape, but there are tables scattered around as well. Their limited menu features fancier dishes such as duck confit, wood grilled crostinis with anchovies, and oyster po boys. Albeit I didn't get a chance to have the food. On to the drinks, they have as limited selection of cocktails and a few shots which didn't quite appeal to me. I asked the bartender about a tall drink with mezcal and gin. I believe it was a Gail Collins. Thankfully, I asked about it and the bartender gave me an idea of how it tasted and good thing I didn't go for it not. Instead, I told him my drink of choice is an aviation (gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice) and he did a damn good job of making me a refined speech cocktail. I wish I remembered what was in it..but it was delicious. By all means, I'm not a cocktail snob (I'm trying to be I guess), but I do love a good cocktail and this was a good cocktail. Prices are standard and service was great. If you're looking for a great, chill, great cocktail place - definitely come here. Brick & Mortar is my impressive little secret I like to show my band friends when they're playing down the street at the Middle East. I like that there is a controlled population that comes to this place (if you don't know its there, what are the chances you're going to wander upstairs to some place new on a random night of the week? A line to get in, a tall staircase, and exposed brick are my lasting impressions of this place. The music wasn't overbearingly loud, everybody there was social and having a great time, and the drinks, oh god the drinks. What if you don't like something on your menu? Tell your server what you like, they'll whip up a concoction to your taste bud's pleasure. I didn't get anything (I was already...well... a little far gone, and I know my limits) but the Lady got a spiced up vodka cranberry that had muddled fruits and some other liquors in it to give it a unique taste. Prices were fair for boston cocktails, I found that most everywhere we went it was going to be around the $10-13 range, so it was reasonable! For those who don't know, Brick & Mortar's bartending crew changed over in the recent months, and I'm seeing my personal sentiment reflected in some recent reviews. Living in the area, Brick & Mortar is something of an almost-weekly staple for my friends and I. I've had most of the drinks on their menu, and it was something of a disappointment to see how poor the quality has dropped over the last three months. Most cocktails, including the classic Penicillin, lack the full-bodied flavor that a lot of their previous menu drinks like the One One Thousand (and their bartender's variation called the Two One Thousand) and Duck You Sucka! had. Drinks now taste watered down with nary any alcohol (or flavor) in them. Brick & Mortar was my go-to for a good atmosphere bar where you felt like you could get lost in the crowd over good cocktails, but now its only saving grace is the atmosphere, which is the only reason it's getting three stars over two. Pro-tip: The entrance is the unmarked door to the left of Central Kitchen, guarded by the guy standing outside of the entrance with an iPad. During heavy traffic hours, instead of making you line up outside like they used to, they take your name, number, and party size and text you when they have space. It's no guarantee of actually finding a decent spot inside the bar, however, which can take further hunting. read more

This inconspicuous bar nestled away in the heart of Central Square is a welcome addition to the dive-bar heavy scene of Boston. Your inner hipster will be screaming in delight at this dimly lit, cozy bar that serves actual cocktails at a slightly-above-average-price. It was pretty packed on a Friday night, with a young and attractive crowd. From what I remember, our drinks were pretty good, albeit a bit weak. Despite the number of people there, I had no issues getting drinks. It's not the best place for a conversation though, as loud music and loud people don't exactly make for "getting to know one another" atmosphere. Brick & Mortar is nice. It feels a little secret because of the unmarked door. Its typically dark, the bar itself is made of brass or copper I think and just looks nice. Record player and turn tables behind the bar. Unfinished brick wall is a nice touch. It just has a great vibe and atmosphere. (pro tip: this is a good date night spot) Beer selection is meh, not bad, not good. Come here for the cocktails, they are on point with classics and have a solid rotating menu. We ordered a tiki drink out of the giant horse tiki glass and it was magical. That being said I tried to prompt the bartender into suggesting an off menu drink by telling him what I liked and asking if he had a reccomendation. He directed me to one of the drinks on the menu... OK thats fine, but it would be cool if they were more experimental with that. Why only 4 stars? It's not cheap. And it gets loud on weekend nights. The bartenders here used to work at Drync, and hence the drinks here are amazing. The place has a great vibe, and awesome (strong) drinks. It's classy, but not arrogant. It's laid back, but well put together. There is a coat check out front as well. The place is not big, and will fit ~100 people comfortably. Central Kitchen is downstairs, and I've heard that it's a good night out to have dinner there and then head upstairs for some after dinner revelry. There's always something appealing about walking into an unmarked door and discovering a drinking hole with fantastic beers and creative cocktails. Drinks are a little on the pricey side but for the occasional upscale splurge I don't have a problem with it. The wait staff is uber-knowledgeable about the cocktails and the rotating menu was far better than I would've thought. The interior brick is drastic and a bit harsh but the vibe is alive and upbeat. You won't find any TVs on unless there's a Boston game on, which adds to the pure-bar feel. Highly recommend! read more

I had the Sister Mary. Sweet with smoky and tangy notes, the convent's rebel. Another notable drink was the Sentimental Gentleman and the Corn n' Oil. The cocktails rotate daily. Food was equally on spot. French fries with duck confit for the classy glutton. Tomato and mozzarella salad with heirloom tomatoes. Wood grilled crostini (we got the smoked eggplant); the bread was very very thick but high quality, so I didn't quibble. Atmosphere is sexy and exclusive, a speakeasy feel. Really good, classy, strong cocktails. It can get super crowded even at a seemly calm time like 8pm on a Thursday. I think there is a big MIT crowd that goes there on Thursday nights. I've been other, weekend nights and it's been hit or miss with the crowd size. I love brick and mortar. I've had two birthdays there, tons of girls' nights, and plenty of early afternoon "book and beer" sessions. The bar tenders are so nice and any time (rarely, thank gosh) I've had issues with male clientele, they've helped me out. The cocktails are fun and imaginative, though you won't necessarily find top top shelf whiskey or vodka here. The apps are pretty great too; try their devils on horseback. They Are. Devine. The bar is relatively small, so when we got there (12am), there was just a short wait outside as they were letting people in on a person-out-person-in basis. Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgable about the cocktails. Being a tequila lover, I tried the "Sister Mary" (?) I think... but then again after 3 of them I could be wrong. LOVED the drink, a really nice flavor between the tequila, grapefruit juice, and the st. germain. She also brought us a round of birthday shots, which were some fruity concoction, totally unexpected, and much appreciated. Even though they offer food, and the food is really good (with a rotating menu) the table are clearly only meant for drinks and not for eating. The food is impressive and the drinks were great. So dimly lit anyone can look attractive, the Brick and Mortar can fill many roles, depending on what day of the week you go. A small but rounded beer selection and knowledgeable bartenders make it a staple in Central. Most weekdays it's not as busy, a good time to bring a date or some friends for a night of talking. Weekends it picks up significantly and it can be hard to find standing room, but the people watching alone is worth it. Definitely a younger crowd, a healthy mix of hipsters throne in. The exposed brick and decor of the establishment is pretty cool, though it's personality sort of ends there. I've never seen anyone order food, so while I know there's a menu, this is really more the place to come to drink and chill. read more

Was in town for an event Thursday evening, and stayed for dinner with college friends on Friday! Since we scored a reservation down the street at the Little Donkey, I googled a fun place to meet for a drink! This place has no sign, just an orange door and up a flight of stairs! First come, first serve table seating, but the hostess totally let us grab two extra stools from the bar for to accommodate our group of 4 at a 2 top! Been here a few times and this place never disappoints when it comes to the creativity of their cocktails. Their bartenders do a great job of commanding the room especially when it gets busy Thurs to Sat nights. It's a little hard to find from the outside, but once you've been here once or twice before then, you'll recognize where their door is. read more
