I've been coming to Brick and Mortar for a long time - they have great cocktails and bartenders are the best. However I had a bad experience last week, celebrating my bday there. Since this is a no reservations type of place I went there with my husband earlier around 5:30pm to be able to find a spot. We were about 12-13 people and sat at the table when you first come in plus the space next to it since the table is for 6 people. We were asked by the manager to either sit at the table or occupy only the standing spot so other people can fit in, which was ridiculous to ask since the table was for 6 people and we were already occupying the area and was feeling pretty tight. Then she came back again and asked with an attitude to move our group to another table at the back next to the toilets, explaining that this was for walk in groups ,which we obviously were! Anyway, we moved to a table that could fit 10 ppl so we still had people standing; move the whole group in the middle of having a great time. I think when you have a group making you good $$$ ordering drinks all night it's not the best decision to treat them like that - zero professionalism, awful attitude, when asked for her card she refused to give me her contact and name. I hope they change management because this place is otherwise good, but to treat people like this is not. There are plenty of other new great bars in Boston where you are treated like a customer. Kind of overrated...Brick & Mortar is known for its secrecy (no obvious entrance to those not in the know...for those who are not familiar, its next to the graffiti alley where the bouncer is standing) and speak easy atmosphere. While I love the atmosphere, this place is always so crowded and the drinks are pretty expensive. The bouncer pushed me at the top of the stairs. I could of fell and been seriously injured!!!! I came here last night and they were at capacity. The door was open, there was no signage and I didn't know they were full so I went up the two flights of a narrow staircase to the bar. At the top of the stairs, the bouncer stopped me to tell me they were full, but the way he stopped me was that he pushed me twice with the narrow staircase literally two steps behind me. I was very upset that he couldn't have just held out an arm or tapped a shoulder, put a velvet rope out, but really the bouncers should of been at the bottom of the staircase, at the entrance from the street slowing entrance there. Everyone knows to stop at the entrance when there is security/host in front. Instead this man endangered my life by pushing me in front of a narrow staircase. read more

Speakeasy great for unwinding from a busy work day or kick-starting an evening of fun. I've become a fan of B&M. What I like: It's never too crowded. It's never too loud. The cocktails are good. They have wait service, so you don't have to crowd the bar. Cool atmosphere. The only downside is that if it is busy, you might have to wait for a while. Luckily they have a pretty efficient text notification system and a very friendly bouncer. I think it's a good trade-off for keeping the people that do make it inside comfortable. I have not tried the food yet, but the burger looked very tempting. I'll probably be a regular. read more

Been here at least 10 times over the past few years. Drinks are 5/5 and they always have some fun cocktails to try. Food is solid - burger hits the spot. Would only go here before ~7pm though. Once it gets later, the lights get unusually dim and the music gets played so loud that there's no chance of having a coherent conversation with anyone. Even with all the tips I still passed by the door to this place a few times... But aside from my directional issues, Brick & Mortar has a really fun vibe and is a surprisingly large place. As other reviews has mentioned, it does get pretty loud as the crowds start to come in, and the 'mood lighting' can be fairly dark. But that didn't dampen my experience. The duck fries were phenomenal and I'd go back just for those! We actually ended up getting 2 orders because they were so good - the chips and queso was also yummy, but nothing out of the ordinary. Some of the drinks were hit or miss, but the bar takes requests so if you're in the mood for something and don't see it just ask! Our group wanted to do a round of shots on the sweeter side and the bartender was able to make ones that tasted like peach rings - so good! read more

I met an old friend here early evening on a Sunday night, and it was the perfect environment for some cocktails and conversation. There were only a handful of people there, the music was great, and the ambiance was quiet and chill. We chatted over mai tais (which surprisingly stood up to those of tiki specialty craft cocktail bars I've visited) and enjoyed the relaxed vibe while we caught up. The bartenders were attentive and friendly, and while I can't truly vouch for their food, I did sneak some fries with bacon aioli off of my friends plate, and that bacon aioli was on point. My only criticism would be that I found the selection to be slightly small in terms of cocktails, but perhaps they do what they do well and don't want to spread themselves out too thin. For example, if I ask for Hendricks gin and tonic with muddled cucumber and you tell me your bar doesn't have cucumber, your fancy speak easy bar should probably shut down. Also, stop putting grapefruits everywhere as decor. It's stupid. Also also, fire the balding bartender that works there. I asked what types of drinks he could make me with Hendricks gin and he just shrugged. I tried to help him out and mentioned that they have many bitters and his response was "yes we do, so what do you want". I'm not here to do your job, sir. That's why you are getting paid to make my drinks. So stop with the attitude, I'm sorry you have to work tonight- MAKE MY DRINK. Ok, that stinks but sh it happens, but lo and behold another couple sits next to us, apparently orders food, and they get food. And the same again for another couple who also got there after us. To say this spot may be my new favorite joint would be saying too little. Well worth searching out, this unmarked second floor cocktail and small plates lounge sits adjacent to and upstairs from Central Kitchen. Not even the address let alone a sign reveal the identity of Brick and Mortar. Winding your way up two sets of stairs, adventurers arrive at the hostess who quickly determines that we can have a drink while a table will be opening up shortly, she will come get us. Rows of what cannot exactly be called tables, more like high counters with tall chairs, jut out from the real bricks and mortar that are the walls. Old four by fours and bolts affixed to steal beams form the low, dark ceiling. The brass bar in the rear of the small room arcs it's way to form a protrusion around which huddle hungry and thirsty patrons. The stools are chair like, comfortable and spaced well around the wide, gleaming bar. Affixed to the walls surrounding the bar are arm height shelves at which drinks can be had while waiting for a spot at the bar or a table. The dim lighting of the entire space is cozy. Light shoots up the walls on one side of the room while streaming down the walls on the other. Exciting shadows are formed and interesting tricks to be had while placing fingertips against the bricks. Spots open up at the bar, we decide to forgo the table and sit at the bar. That's when it gets fun. Just the listing of cocktails is enough to get the blood flowing: a bullet for Alfredo is mixed with grappa, blanc vermouth and campari, served straight up from an ice cold frosted bottle of the premixed potion. As the bartender notes, very cold and zero dilution. Dry, fruity, not sweet and slippery smooth. The "Sentimental Gentleman," a mixture of scotch, benedictine and Nux alpin, a walnut liquor was thick, syrupy and subtly strong - almost reminds me of alcoholic moxie. The "Low Rider," combines Siembra azul (tequila), Cacao and another ingredient that has slipped my mind. All price in at $10. The "Double Wide," ($6) is ordered from the shot menu and mixes old #7 (whiskey) and coke, served iced. Order four shots and get 'em for $20. The menu consists of sandwiches and plates ranging in price from $7-$12 and include oyster po'boys served on brioche buns, shaved steak sandwich, waffles and chicken, duck hash, Calamari and a couple others. The bruschetta, "choose two for $9," is well executed. The crisped chicken liver atop apricot moutarde and tobacco shallots turned rich liver into a smooth and sweet, crunchy bite. The roasted tomato, white anchovy and goat cheese, wood fired in preparation is complex. Subtly salted anchovy offsets the sweet tomato and the creamy goat cheese pulls in the crispy bread. Two decent sized pieces piled high with well chosen ingredients. The sides menu includes Spiced fried brussel sprouts, fried polenta sticks, devils on horseback and several other choices. The brussel sprouts were crispy, salted well and tender through the middle. The devils on horseback combine a well done piece of bacon speared into a date. Sweet, crisped and salted. A cozy atmosphere staffed with competent servers and drink mixers, a great spot that is focused on items it does well: creative and alcohol rich drinks and unique combinations of small plates, appetizers and other bite sized morsels of "bar food." WORST.SERVICE.EVER. This was my second attempt at Brick & Mortar. The first time was on a Saturday night. I was in a group of 5 and there were no tables but the hostess said we could stand by the bar along the drink rail and that we'd have waitress service. We waited about 10 minutes for a waitress and when one finally came over, she yelled at us for standing where we were standing. So we left. But I was willing to give the place another shot. This time I came in after work on Friday. The place was crowded but not overflowing and my wife and I were able to scoop the last two seats in the middle of the bar. As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by the bartender and given waters. Then we proceeded to wait... The bartenders were at the sides of the long bar, one appeared to be filling all the orders for the tables/waitresses, the other had his back turned to us and was serving the guests opposite us as the bar kind of wraps around in a circle. So we continued to wait... 12 minutes since sitting down and not even a glance, I got the attention of a bar back and asked if he could get the attention of one of the bartenders for me. He shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Nice. So I literally got up and walked to the other side of the bar and immediately the bartender noticed me and asked if he could get me a drink. Actually, you can serve my wife and I in the spot we were sitting at! I ordered their version of a negroni and the wife her usual old cuban. And we waited some more... A negroni has 3 ingredients, an old cuban 4. I watched the bartender pour the gin for my drink over rocks and let it sit while he made my wife's drink. 7 minutes later, he finally finished making our drinks. He strained my negroni into a double old fashioned and there couldn't have been 4oz of beverage in the glass. Have a look for yourself. Of course, 90% of the drink was water since it had been sitting for 7 minutes over ice. If you're scoring at home, that's 20 minutes for two cocktails, one totally watered down. Also to note, a couple of ladies sitting next to us had been nearing the end of their drinks when we sat down and had finished them shortly after. You'd think the bartender would attend to them next after they waited for 20 minutes. Nope. He went back over to the other side of the bar. Also, a group of guys who had arrived shortly before us and were seated at a table behind us hadn't been served their drinks by the time we had finally received ours. One guy even attempted to get a drink at the bar and was yelled at by the waitress. We took down our meager drinks in about 5 minutes, walked over to Cuchi Cuchi which was no less busy, where we were greeted and served great, tasty, boozy, and complex drinks in 8 total minutes. read more

Came here based on a recommendation from my friend who's a bit of a cocktail snob (e.g., will only have Hendrick's gin with a gin and tonic). In her opinion, Brick & Mortar is better than Barbara Lynch's Drink. As a result, even though I'm definitely not a cool hipster, I found myself searching for the unmarked entrance of this place one Saturday night. Brick & Mortar is located literally right between Central Kitchen and an Indian convenience store near the Central Square T station. Since the entrance is unmarked, your only clue that a bar exists is the bouncer right outside. Once inside, you head upstairs to the hip, sort of old-fashioned industrial looking bar. One thing I found really refreshing about this place is it is possible to actually find a place to sit down. In the event you can't get a table right away, the hostess takes your name and notifies you when one opens up. The bar area has little hooks under the table to hang your coat, so you don't stand around awkwardly cradling a drink in one hand and holding a huge down jacket in the other. I've been here a few times and have found the wait staff to be extremely nice. One time after waiting over 20 minutes, our hostess finally found us a table, but just as we were walking over, someone else accidentally took it. She felt terrible and apologized profusely, and then the waitress brought us some free treats. The drink menu has some pretty amusing and whimsical items, like the "Sentimental Gentleman", and "Home by Ten". I really enjoy the "Temporary Fix" and ordering your own cocktails directly isn't bad either. FOOD We tried an array of appetizers, which included the wings, bacon wrapped dates, duck fries, deviled eggs, steak tartare, and the burger. Highlights: The fries were perfectly crispy and great to share with the group. Bacon wrapped dates had crunchy, soft, savory, and sweet flavors. I wish there was more cheese inside, though. The wings were crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. There was no specific marinade, but the flavors were great. Burger was a really great portion - Biggest bang for your buck here! DRINKS The girls got a mix of the Sister Mary (grapefruit tequila drink) and the Cider. Since they have a full bar, you can also request drinks, so my coworker got a Moscow Mule. The drinks were strong and good. SERVICE My only gripe about this place was the service. I would've preferred no-service, or full-on service. Our server would set down our utensils at the edge of the table, set down our waters without pouring them, and would only take half of the group's orders until we had to remind her some girls had not ordered. This secretive speakeasy style bar is a really cool place to hangout! They have a long circular copper bar that looks really nice. The place has really night ambient lighting and loud music and I love. The entrance is unmarked on the 2nd floor of Central Kitchen. They have a mobile queueing system for getting in, which really makes the wait not bad since you can wait elsewhere. The cocktails here are innovative and delicious! My favorite was the Sister Mary, it was sweet and has Aperol in it, which is one of my favorite liqueurs. Other cocktails like the Penicillin, Paradicey were also sweet and tasty, I like my sweet cocktails! The Streets of Gettysburg was a bit too bitter because it has coffee liquer and bitters in it. It's sad to see such lackluster reviews for B&M after having such an awesome time here for NYE drinks. Though the cocktail menu is limited with nearly all tequila and whisky-based drinks, the bartenders are damn good and know their stuff. I ordered several cocktails off-menu as I'm more of a gin and vodka man and every one of them was superb. My friends and I went with some Spice Fried Brussel Sprouts and it was great finger food to go along with the libations. As for service, Alice was wonderful and took great care of us throughout the night. We even did a round of D.T.O.'s at the end to wrap things up =D Perhaps the folks have taken some of the initial reviews to heart and made the proper adjustments because I didn't see any such deficits in cocktails, food or service. With drink execution on par with the likes of Eastern Standard, Drink, Clio, Hungry Mother, etc., Central Square's gotten one excellent new addition in the handcrafted cocktail scene. read more

Locals only because this place is off the map. Although it's pretty small, there are some wicked cool vibes going on in this place. The whole atmosphere from the lighting to the (obviously) brick walls to the seating arrangement, Brick and Mortar is cool and intimate. A tiny menu selection but not disappointing in the slightest bit. I tried the Corn 'N Oil based off of former reviews and it really good! I tried the Ryan Gosling solely based on the name, no shame here. It tasted like a juice version of a bloody mary in my opinion, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there wasn't anything tomato based in it so I thought that was slightly intriguing. Two drinks and this girl was tipsy- that's impressive. I'll definitely come back and try out some apps. Also- shout out the the waitress who was laughing it up with everyone and having a good time. People who actually look like their enjoying their job get big ups from the whole crowd fo-sho! read more

Ambiance is excellent if you come earlier in the evening, when it's friends meeting for drinks and the soundtrack isn't loud yet. Dark room, copper bar, mildly showy bartenders. Bar snacks are solid. The obligatory deviled eggs are nothing to write yelp about, a very standard preparation. Steak tartare, a rare thing to find (see what we did there?), is perfectly mixed and served with just the right amount of bread. I did not get to try the wings, but they looked great from one seat over. The one star loss is because I'd like a broader cocktail selection. The basic menu is short at about eight drinks, two of which are basically standard "get it anywhere" beverages. Now, the bartenders do always have something up their sleeves, and if you ask, you'll get something unusual. But you have to ask, and not everyone knows to. read more

A very interesting place, I would highly recommend stopping by. The unmarked door that leads to the second floor off of Mass Ave, that's where you're headed. Latin themed outfit, unique and creative mixed drinks, pulling a lot of different inspirations in to make the sorts of drinks that you would never ask for because you wouldn't even think of them! The personality is very unique; expect this to be sort of an upscale bar with suave bartenders and loud music. Not a quiet bar atmosphere, but it's not trying to be--ample seating, although if you're looking to talk, probably not the place. Central Square needed a cocktail bar, and they definitely do that task justice. The cocktail menu is large, and there's something for everyone. Plus, they are not prissy about substitutions, which I appreciate. The noise is off the charts, though, so having a conversation with more than four people is near impossible. Head to Central Kitchen and then take the door on the left that leads upstairs. You'll find a cool place to grab a drink and eat some fancy good appetizers. I came on a weekday for a few drinks and a bit of food. The cocktails are fun and interesting and I definitely had no problem downing 3 of those throughout the night. They have something for everyone: mixes with whiskey, tequila, vodka, you name it they have something fun for you to drink. The food was also really good. I had the duck fries which tasted awesome along side some liquor. It had bits of crispy fried duck in a creamy gruyere sauce. NOMS. There is a time and place for using a fork while eating fries and this definitely qualifies. They have a few other small plate items on the food menu that also look great (wings, brie, etc). As far as big entrees go however, they are more limited. The atmosphere is what I would call quintessential Cambridge hipster. It's a darker room with pretty loud background music, so it's not so great if you're really trying to have in depth converstations with people but on the other hand it's very ideal if that guy next to you is kinda annoying and you don't really care what he has to say anyway. read more

Great bartenders. Drinks were amazing. Place is cute and ambiance is great. Definitely recommend a whiskey sour.
