I didn't actually contract with James because he came out and inspected my brick and told me that it wasn't concerning structurally/safety-wise which was my main concern and that if I need to do necessary repairs I should spend money elsewhere. We live in a house built in 1900, so, needless to say, it needed some TLC. We searched around Yelp!, and found three companies that could possibly help us. We ended up hiring Brick Specialists, and we are so very glad we did! One of the rooms in our basement needed to be recovered with cement as lots of the brick was showing through, some of the coverage at the bottom of the two walls, was crumbling - just the cement coverage, NOT the foundation. This house will be around forever, she is so well built! Anyway, James with Brick Specialists came over, and we showed him around the basement. We pointed out several other small areas that needed some touch up as well. Then, it came to the back room. James wasn't surprised with what he saw, as he is use to these wonderful old homes, and how they are built. He talked about the job, the time needed (only two days!), and the final cost. He gave us a written quote, and left. My husband and I talked about it, as I had already done my research on the company, and we decided to go with it. The two men in the crew that would be doing the work, as well as James, showed up exactly at 7:00 am, just as promised. We took them down to the basement, and James talked specifics with them. James left, and the two men got to work. They worked until 4:00 pm on the first day (it gets dark around 4:35 pm at this time of year), and arrived promptly at 7:00 am the next day too. They finished around 3:15 pm the next day. James came by around 12:00 noon on the second day to check on them too. He definitely keeps an eye on his crews. WOW! WOW! WOW! Brick Specialists did an absolutely WONDERFUL job on the back room! It does not look like the same room, and I honestly don't mind going back there now! LOL! Called and left a message about getting an estimate on some brick repair for our home. James called back within an hour and asked what year our home was built. When I told James it was built in 1965 he said he only works on homes built before 1935. That would be excellent information to have prominently displayed on your website. Currently the website says the following: "We work with older, newer and historic Denver homes..." I then asked James if he knew of anyone in the Denver area who would do brick work on a house built in 1965. James said he didn't know anyone and only knows people who work on older houses. Like a good cow mutilation, sometimes you just have to get some work done... We enlisted Denver Brick Specialists to perform work on our alien headquarters (or more specifically false/camouflage structure that sits on top of our secret lair! While I realize that this company is owndr and operated by mere Hoomans, I have to say I was disappointed with the overall experience. Plus Side: 1. They showed up when they said they'd show up 2. They didn't try to adjust the price after the quote 3. Owner seemed knowledgeable Negative Side: 1. They would often contradict themselves in terms of things they advised should not be done and what they wanted to do, leaving you to wonder whether which was actually correct or just trying to make a quick buck. 2. Hoses were left attached to the property during freezing temps, resulting in damage. 3. No quality inspections were performed by supervisors after the work was complete. They replaced broken bricks and created as much consistency as possible with an older home that had previous damage to the brick and previous owners had added a porch with different brick. I am extremely happy with the work done by James and the Denver Brick Specialists. We recently bought an old home in the Highlands and the brick exterior was in need of some love. Denver Brick Specialists were recommended to us by other people who own an older brick home, so I called and made an appointment for a quote. James came by and went over the various issues with me and explained what was urgent, what was not and gave me a quote for the repairs. His team came by once there was room in their schedule and did quite a bit of tuck pointing and brick replacement. James made sure to get the exact matching brick so that the repaired areas look great. The prices are on the high end, but well worth it for the level of craftsmanship. There are portions of our home where previous brick work was performed by other, less skilled masons, and the difference in the end result is obvious. It is not worth going cut rate for repairs that will last decades. I can't recommend these guys highly enough. read more

I normally would not take the time for something like this, but I really liked Jame's work and am actually proud to show off the walls he repaired (they are interior and now look great). Here is my original review: I recently bought a home built in 1890 that needed some tuck pointing and a lot of brick repair in the foundation. I called four different places that specialized in brickwork for old/historic homes because the mortar used in older homes is different from modern mortar and it has to be matched properly. James from Denver Brick Specialists got back to me the next day, we arranged a time for him to look at the house, and I had a bid a week before anyone else even got around to calling me back. Overall, the experience was great. James was booked out for almost two months but was able to squeeze our job in a small opening they had so we could finish laying our floors and move in. For two days they showed up at 7:00 AM like they said they would, worked until 7:00 PM, and then came in for a few hours on Saturday to finish up a small section. I was impressed that, instead of rushing things, they put in the extra hours to do it right. Our previously decaying brick walls now looks great. They matched the aged color of both the mortar and replacement bricks so that our walls look correct, i.e. they look their proper age and any new bricks seamlessly blend in with the original bricks. Lastly, James is easy to work with. He quoted us a bid and that was the price - no increases as the job went along - no increases as more bad bricks were found. Simple and straightforward. A person is likely to only need a mason once or twice in their life, so reviews are a big deal. I am thoroughly satisfied with Denver Brick Specialists. I received three different quotes and Brick Specialists was the highest, by a good bit, but I elected to go with them nonetheless for a few reasons- 1.) James showed up exactly when he said he would, followed up in a non-intrusive manner, and was thoroughly professional. The other two outfits were hard to reach, required me to follow-up with them for the quote, and didn't leave me with the warmest feeling about their professional manner. 2.) While walking around my recently purchased home, I mentioned that it would need a lot of work and started pointing out some of the things that the home inspector had mentioned and a previous mason had pointed out. James had a superior eye for detail and started pointing out things I hadn't seen and the other guys hadn't either. I know that he was shaking up a little more business, but I want a guy who is hustling for the work and sees things that others don't. I don't want to have to call someone back out to fix something, so his pointing these things out was very welcome. I was nervous about paying too much, but I am fully satisfied. His crew showed up on time every day, worked expeditiously and hard for the full day, and cleaned up when the left every day. They had a great attention to detail and worked autonomously throughout the day. In addition, they just spent the last two hours giving my house a scrub down to clean up all the dust and mortar, but they didn't limit just to the areas that they worked on - they paid attention to my flower beds, my sidewalks, the front porch, everything. My house is cleaner than when they arrived. They replaced some bricks on my 100+ year old house, but James worked hard to find the exact right brick from the time period. I had some bricks that were left over from a previous renovation, but James wouldn't use them. He thought that the bricks he had were cleaner and had better edges. He could have saved on materials, but chose to provide a better product. Being a bit of a stickler for details, there were few things that I could find for them to retouch. What I did find, James went out of his way to make it right. Even more, as some of the big things were taken care, I saw some things that I had failed to mention in the walk-around. I offered to pay more since it was beyond the scope of the original work, but James wouldn't take the money even though they added extra effort. Even though they weren't too big, Brick Specialists could have nickel-and-dimed me about the work, but again they focused on providing a great service and product. He even taught me some about how my basement was constructed and the history of my house and the neighborhood. To top it off, I just paid the workers by check for the work (James had another commitment). I tried to give them a tip. They wouldn't take it, no matter how many times I offered it. Amazing. You'll pay a premium for this service, but the price you settle on is the one you'll pay and you'll be completely satisfied with the work. My house had 2 different Brick motor colors, and was probably the first time anyone had taken the time to repair the damage. The guy on my project worked hard for 2 full days on my house. The work is seamless, they addressed areas that I didn't even realize needed to be done. Color is spot on! The wall on the front porch they relaid looks original. I knew this project would create a lot of dust, but they did a great job cleaning and washing down the house once completed. They were 6 weeks out when we scheduled, and well worth the wait. I called these guys for a tuck pointing estimate last November 2017 and a rep, James, responded immediately and came right out to meet me at my house and leave me with an estimate. I wanted to wait until the Spring to get it done after the winter cold and called him again in March for a revised estimate to include some other items. He again came right out and gave me the revised number. I then called him back in an attempt to book the job, and have been trying to make contact with him now for about 6 weeks. I have received NO return phone call whatsoever and I have probably dialed the number 20 times, and left numerous voice mail messages. I have never had a company be as non-professional as this and not respond to me whatsoever - no return phone call and no one has ever answered the phone. James did a total about face on this and did not have the class to at least call me back and let me know why. The company is in the dark ages because they do not use voice mail and no one ever answers the phone. I am struggling to give them one star even because of their total lack of responsiveness, professionalism and common courtesy. I wouldn't recommend this company if my life depended on it so beware! read more

In March, I met with Bill at Brick Specialists to bid on a tuckpoint job. His prices were slightly higher than Chimmney Jack (who had come recommended), but he seemed like such an earnest man. My "bid" was a handwritten glob that was almost unreadable, on notebook paper. Not very professional (I had expected him to follow up via email - learned they don't have email. ) Bill made it clear he wanted the business by practically stalking the house - calling almost daily and making unannounced visits - even on weekends (think 9am on Sunday!). I agreed to use him, and then I had a headache of a time "accepting" the bid - he required a signature on his note scrap and only had a fax (I don't have a fax only a scanner), but he stalked the house constantly to get that back as well. (see a pattern - incessant). So the work was done by Santiago, and he was an absolute professional (and very polite). So far the work has held up, and it does appear he did the work he said he would do. When the finished the job, Bill was equally persistent in getting paid. I told him I needed an invoice, he dropped a handwritten invoice on a store bought receipt book (not even a company name printed - so unprofessional). I told him I used electronic bill pay and would process the payment via the bank system (once he gave me a mailing address), and he said "OK" but then kept calling and insisting he come over to get a check (I don't have checks anymore - tried explaining that). So I submitted via my bank's bill pay system. So that's bad, but what got worse was the absolute hostile behavior I got from James?(the son) who called me to demand I cancel the first check, and cut them another check to be picked up immediately. I told them it was already deducted from my account, and I had told Bill (who said he understood) how I was issuing payment, and the guy continued to be hostile and threatening. I have never been treated that way by a contractor, and because of the a) constant harrassment level persistence when THEY want something, and b) the hostile behavior because they didn't want to wait for the mail to arrive, I will NEVER recommend this contractor. NOT WORTH THE HASSLE. I'd give them the information to the other vendor my friends have used without that kind of grief. read more
