I was in desperate need of a haircut when I walked into Brick's. I was getting giant knots and tangles in the lower part of my hair, my bangs were nearly down to my chin - it was time for a trim. My boyfriend was also in tow, as I'd just picked him up from a job interview and he too was in need of a cut. We caught Chelsea while she was in on her own, and just in time to beat a rush. Three other people came in after we get started. I like that they offer the free PBR, but I was technically working so I did not partake. Eric wound up coming in to help with the rush, and he worked on my boy while Chelsea trimmed the birds nest on my head. Seriously, maybe I was easy to please, but I really liked what Chelsea did to my hair. I don't get the hate. I asked for her to trim the ends, freshen up my layers, and take my bangs up above my eyebrows in a blunt asymmetrical line. That is what I got. It is awesome to have manageable hair again. It was also neat to have a free eyebrow wax because it was my first time in. The boy got ambushed with his eyebrow waxing, being a very good sport nonetheless, and Eric was literally freaking out over his impressive brow. When Eric got to me he was impressed with me as well, saying I had a "fountain of youth" in my brows because they were so smooth when he pulled them taught. What can I say? I exercise my eyebrow muscles quite often. The overall environment of the shop was fun, friendly, and Chelsea and Eric made us feel like we'd been coming in forever. With haircuts and waxing at the unbeatable price of $12 each (though, they are cash only at the moment), I have to say I think I've found my new regular hair place. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I am not from this area so i was looking for a good barber in town, this place had good reviews so i figured id give them a call. I called to ask if they were barbers that actually used razors, because in this day in age anyone with a pair of scissors can call themselves a barber. I get a medium razor fade and in my time ive let to many crappy barbers cut my hair, so you can never be to careful in a new town. They rudely told me that the haircut i was describing "didnt excist". Then, told me they werent open and hung up on me. I called back and obviously no answer. Let me start by saying that i have gotten the same haircut EVERYWEEK now for the past 8 years, and i need to stress that i have gotten my haircut in 11 different countries and mostly every State in the 50 united states. So im sorry Bricks, but my haircut obviously does exist. Let me finish by saying this, if your "closed" then maybe you shouldnt answer your phone. Also, if your establishment is to low scale and you have to use your personal phone with business then maybe when you answer it you should always speak to your customers with respect. I just went in with a girlfriend of mine and it is a change of pace from all of the salons/shops i have ever been in, which is a great thing. This has it's own flavor for sure! Chelsea and Eric were extremely friendly and funny and a great little duo. They do great cuts for only 12 bucks, you can't really beat that! I rarely ever get my haircut outside of home, but Brick's had great reviews and my hair had grown into this big afrohawk thing. Something had to be done, but I didn't know what exactly I wanted. I called and was able to make an appointment the same day. The shop is small. Small and hot even in the middle of the cool Spring months. Not unbearable, but warm enough to make a barber sweat when he's working on your do. From a client's perspective, it may be a worthwhile investment to install some type of AC or ventilation system, even if it's just a small window unit so we don't smell any body odors or feel clammy hands. The walls and ceiling is decorated crazily with the most random, fun, and occasionally creepy trinkets and toys. Plenty to look at while on the chair! Putting my trust into Adam, the only criteria I gave him were that I wanted something "clean, professional, but still a bit edgy." We made the decision together to do a sort of undercut fade with a top slickback. After he was done cutting, we tried to style it like we planned, but my hair wouldn't slick back, and instead my thick and pointy Asian hair turned it into a major rice rocket spiked hairdo. Not quite what I wanted, but it was still better than the mess I came in with. I actually ended up trimming it a bit on my own at home, then worked it more towards one side and am happy with it. The things that hold me back from giving full 5 stars: -the temperature -got a small cut on the forehead when Adam was using the shaver blade (very minor, but a break in the skin nonetheless) -was trying to get a conversation going with Adam but only got short non-engaging responses.. From the second you step in the door and grab a free beer (PBR but hey it's free), you're drawn into Ericland. He's full on insights on just about any subject. I'd been to Brick's twice in the past. Once, I got a fabulous haircut by Eric. I usually go to a fancier salon but live very close by. My time was short and I thought, what the heck- I'll go back in because I don't have to plan ahead to make an appointment. Because I hadn't been there in a while I did not know the prices had gone up. They do not take credit cards and I did not plan on enough cash for the price increase. I arrived at 3:02pm (it's $12 until 3) and explained my situation. Eric was incredibly disrespectful and smug- looking at me saying loudly and rather insolently "$16 it's after 3" like I was an imbecile who couldn't tell time. I had previously acknowledged that it was after 3- and that I was asking for some grace. I should note that there was one customer in the salon at the time. Additionally, I had my son's hair cut there and it looked like someone took a lawnmower to his head. I know it's hard to cut a toddler's hair so I cut them a break. I wanted to support my neighborhood, independently owned hairdresser. As another reviewer noted- this junior high atmosphere should be avoided. Unless, of course, you're into that sort of thing. In this day and age, not caring about your customers will leave you without customers in the end. It's clear from Eric's responses to other posters that he really doesn't care. Just moved to Portland recently. I really needed a haircut, and decided to give Brick's a try based on the reviews. The fact that they have the Greek Cuisina octopus on their roof definitely helped my decision, since that used to be my favorite restaurant in town. I showed Eric an old passport photo of mine and asked for a haircut similar to the one in the photo, and the results were perfect. This guy really knows what he's doing, and was surprisingly fast, too. I also really enjoyed the conversation. Since it was my first time there, he gave me a free eyebrow waxing. I had never had one, had no idea what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised at the results. After two underwhelming experiences at Salons in the Southwest, I decided that I might try to throw my lot in with a barber. I heard about Brick's int he Portland Mercury, and figured that for $12.00 I could do a lot worse. I had a few trepidations walking in, but once I entered, I knew I was in for a kick. The shop is small, and people were literally overflowing in the waiting area. I was offered a beer, and managed to snag a seat. I got to admire the variety of kitsch on the walls from obscure record albums, to weird toys to a line of Star Wars masks. The people were friendly and worked quickly to move things along. Actually getting a haircut was a very different experience than anywhere I've ever been. Three different people cut my hair: the owner, a trainee, and then very experienced stylist. I have super thick hair that doesn't take well to styling, so I need a cut that's going to look pretty good from the outset. I was very satisfied with what I got and I received a lot of compliments for the next few days. However the best was yet to come. Like I said, I have thick hair, which also counts my eyebrows. With every first haircut, you get a complimentary eyebrow waxing. I've been plucking my eyebrows for a while now, but had never had the courage to get them waxed. Now, I will seek it out. It was quick, relatively painless, and damn if it didn't bring out my eyes. I totally recommend them. read more

Mixed bag. You will get a tremendous beard trim here. If you have the whole day free, and you like hanging out in barber shops, this is your place. Better still if you don't have to travel far. But this place prioritizes walk-ins, meaning whatever appointment you've got or phone conversation you had is meaningless. This is the second time I've had to leave with all the hair I came in with, which brings my average to .333. I dreaded the moment when I had to find a new barber! But Jeff at BRICKS made the transition for me a breeze. I'm glad I didn't try any other barber or barbershops first. He nailed it on the first try. I got an awesome fade! His buddy Eric gives the barbershop a remarkable wholesome touch (That I'm not used to back in Miami, FL) and most importantly he's great with clients. First off, I have been going to Brick's for a while now (2+ years) and have loved every minute of it, until today. I went in and got my ass chewed about something someone THAT I DON'T KNOW wrote here on Yelp. They claimed it was my wife, who not only enjoyed her haircut but also points out to people that when she straightens it, now looks fantastic because of Brick's. However, it was not my wife. I don't know who A Z is. Neither does my wife. After telling me my wife is no longer allowed back, why on earth would I stay? I have told all of my friends to go to Brick's, but that stops now. Sorry to Chelsea, you give great haircuts and I have enjoyed every one. Eric, I think your cuts were great. Better buckle up buttercup! This guy is the real deal. No frills, no coddling, no "so, how's your day going?". You want a clean cut, have an off beat sense of humor, and like supporting local business? This is your place. Eric is hilarious, great taste in music, and is generally just a special guy with a great craft, and is super accommodating. The shop is unique, there are plants growing from the floor, but it's unique, and that's what I want in my cuts. No cookie cutter bull shit. This guy looks at your head, your hair, and makes them look right so you don't walk out looking like an idiot, which let's be honest, most of the time you do at other places. All in all, if you want to be treated like you're part of a family of off beat humorists, this is where you go. But most of all, you'll walk out with a sick cut, and a really, really fun experience. Okay. I really wanted to like this place; it's tiny, the staff is super friendly, and they have giant chickens to advertise. I read about them in The Mercury and decided that a $12 haircut sounded like a fantastic idea. Plus the article said first time customers get a free eye brow waxing. Again, I really wanted to like this place. I was offered beer when I came in (a plus, for sure) and I was seated right away. I forget the name of the girl who cut my hair, but she was also super nice. I wanted layers and side swept bangs. It's a pretty easy hair cut, I've been told, plus my hair is straight and very manageable. I can't see a damn thing without my glasses, so I just chatted up the chick and let her do her thing. I wasn't offered a waxing (and they definitely needed it; I tweezed them later that night) but I didn't want to be annoying so I didn't mention it. I was also in a hurry, so I didn't inspect the cut before I left. However, I got home, checked it out and found that a good portion of my hair on the sides hadn't been cut at all. This is bad because my last haircut was in July and I had some gnarly split ends. Also, my bangs weren't bangs at all; she left them below my eyes and had just pushed them aside. In the end, I cut my bangs at home and tried to fix the rest. I've been complemented on this haircut; unfortunately, both people pointed out the bangs as being especially nice. I'd say spend an extra $15 and go elsewhere, unless you truly don't care about your hair (which, if you care less about your hair than I do you don't care at all). Sad. A few days later: The owner got to me and said he'd personally take care of me next time and that I should've spoken up while still there. You know, Supercuts might seem cheap and fast and easy to the men in my family, and gawd knows why they were as addicted as they were, but I'm the one who had to look at the results. That is, when I could persuade them to go at all. Thank goodness my friend Troy needed a ride to Brick's to get his hair cut. Now, it's common knowledge that Troy knows where all the good places are, so when he likes a place, I pay attention. It's going to be unusual, off the beaten path, and since Troy is as meticulous as metros get, I knew I'd hit pay dirt for style and originality. I was not disappointed. Eric is as Portland as The Church of Elvis, but don't just go there for the conversation, handlebar mustache and quirky decor - go for an expert opinion (and great execution) of how to present your best self to the world. As I sat there, a shaggy kid said he needed a haircut because he was job hunting. In no time flat, Eric had him looking sharp like Jay Gatsby, and gave him advice on why men need to embrace the power of grooming products to take control of their own lives. And as we all chatted about quantum physics, I knew I wanted the good people at Brick's in my sons' lives as a kind of alternative but oddly wholesome influence. I sent my husband along with them because I knew that Eric would finally get through to him about that unibrow, and he would fix that thing my husband called a haircut from Supercuts better than I could. Sure enough, he came home with a jaunty, brand-new "F--- yeah!" in his whole attitude that went beyond his hair. Just what I like to see in my guy. And my handsome sons? Pleading with them to spruce up and get a haircut is just not one of those arguments we have anymore - they are total converts in the House of Brick's! Google directed me toward this barber shop just down the street from my home (this was earlier in the year, February or March). Judging from the reviews on google it seemed like a great, and more importantly, reasonably-priced place to get one's hair cut. I stopped at Brick's for a haircut thinking that they would be open when they say they will be. Brick's Barber would have none of my ridiculous notions and I was told at the door that they were closed. At 4:45. On a day their website said they would close at 6. How dare a potential customer arrive at our door with plenty of time to spare to cut his hair, clean up and close shop? The nerve! I figured my first experience was the exception and gave them another shot, so I stopped by the other day with a clean slate in mind only to be rewarded with disappointment yet again. A scrawled note taped to the door told anybody approaching that they had closed early because it was too hot to cut hair. A fan won't solve your heat woes but it'll really help make cutting hair bearable. All that being said, I think I'll go to a barber shop that is a little more serious about running a business. read more
