I came in here once to get my hair cut a while back, thinking, hey, it's close, there's a sign out front that says $12 hair cuts, why the heck not? Overall I got an average haircut for an ok price, but I was put off by the amount of smack talking going on by the owner and his coworker. Pretty much the two of them could rival 7th grade girls for sheer viciousness of comments. I figured I'd just come in on a bad day or something, everyone has them. Giving them the benefit of the doubt I came back a couple months later. Nope, still just an average haircut (and now the price has gone up) and a whole lot of nasty gossip. Since I've moved to Portland I've been struck by how awesome most people are--they're kind, accepting, and very fun. The two people who work here, however, were just the opposite--they talked down about their customers practically before the door shut behind them. It was everything from how so-and-so has a hellion for a child and how so-and-so was never going to get a date if he didn't submit to the owner's constant suggestions for an eyebrow wax and to how so-and-so had an ulterior motive for coming in. Given the fake-nice attitude they'd just given these customers moments before, I have no doubt that they roast everyone who leaves their shop as soon as their back is turned--including me. I found it extremely unprofessional to do this in front of the group of customers waiting for a cut, and really off-putting. The two of them are obviously very close, and yes, maybe some of the things they were saying were true--but none of that needs to be aired in such a hostile way, and NONE of that needs to be said in front of other customers. Basically, a decent business plan, decent hair cut skills, but really unprofessional customer service that just turned my stomach. Be kind, people, be kind. There's enough negativity around without adding to it. I'll be taking my business to a place that's more friendly and professional in the future. read more

Wow that's all i can say about now is wow! let's just say i walked into this place as your average Joe and walked out as Brad fuc**** Pitt. Eric and Chelsea are two of the most amazing people i have met up here in Oregon. So i walked into bricks one day asking for a hair cut (it looked like a good place to try out). So Eric sits me down and says "what can i do for you is this your first time in here"? Well let me just tell you i was in for one hell of a ride. I asked for a Number 1 buzz all over (shaved my head) and just got to talking to him and he sounded like a barber should sound. They should get to know you and talk to you in my opinion, like Eric (Go for your self). I then finished with him but no, oh no it was not over. I got sucked in to the scheme of the eye brow wax. Me being an average guy was like hell no. But Eric being Eric he talked me into it. So yes he waxed my eye brows which i was upset about at the time. Well it was one of the best things i did to this day it opened my life completely. I have become a more happier person and i swear everything has just gotten better. I would have done this forever if i could but i am unfortunately leaving Oregon :(. I wish any one who goes to Bricks barber to enjoy the company because people like Eric and Chelsea are a dying breed, meaning it is hard to find a good barber shop where the people take a genuine interest in their customers. I originally went to Brick because I'd heard they would cut my hair for $12 AND they spoke English. I don't mean that as an insult to my previous barber, but when you're asking someone to change your physical appearance, communication is key. I'm a dude and my short hair is pretty easy to cut, so I just felt like I was getting ripped off paying $20+ at Bishops. When I went to Bricks for the first time I quickly realized that I'd found the only place in Portland to get your hair cut. I've been going back monthly for over a year. Both Eric and Chelsey have cut my hair a number of times, and it's always perfect. They actually listen to what I want, and make it better. It's also hard to escape a trip to Brick's without a complimentary cold beer and some of Eric's hilarious stories. My first time in, Eric insisted on waxing my eyebrow(s). I admit, I was very skeptical. Now I can't go without it. He always manages to make me look my best without making me look like "the kind of guy who waxes his eyebrows". I recommend Brick's to all my friends, co-workers, and family. It's a fantastic value for an exceptional service. read more

In Portland, there are basically two types of barbershops to men, the corporate, and the old fashioned. Bricks is neither. As a first time customer I walked into Bricks and immediately felt like I was with friends in a place that felt the way a barbershop should feel. But to the people at Bricks, giving you a haircut isn't what its all about, its about bringing out the inner you, as cheesy as that may sound. The family that runs this local gem is interested mostly in accommodating the individual helping him or her find the right look that is going to guarantee their happiness and also the appearance that best suits them. I have been to a lot of barbershops in Portland over the years. From the days of Marlin's downtown, to Sweeney Todd's, and For Heads Only -Bricks is the only place that comes close, with professionalism, hospitality, and the kind of down home Portland friendliness that has been abandoned in the world of Supercuts-nation. This is a long overdue review of this place. I have been getting my hair cut here since I moved to Portland earlier this year. Not only is the haircut awesome and inexpensive, but the atmosphere and people make this the only place I would want to get my hair cut at. When you walk in, the walls provide an overload of cool shit to look at, from old records, to funny phrases, to star wars collectibles, it's all there. Customers and Barbers alike are all good people who provide spectacular conversation and good laughs. Today I went there and had to wait a very long time for my haircut, it was busier than I have seen it before, but the fact that everyone was having a good time and I could relax with a beer while I waited made the time go right by. If it is your first time here, you will get your eyebrows waxed and be damn pleased with the results. When it is over, you will be surprised your face could look so good and have a new understanding of the theory of relativity. read more

Listen! I went here today for the first time after reading all the reviews and driving to their place 3, read: 3, times. Yesterday they were closed for an emergency which is all good of course and their website says open at 10am (when they are actually open at 11am)... No biggie... I am so happy that I decided to go back and check them out today. I got my hair did by Eric. Scott the bathroom artist was there drinking beer. Chelsea was also there finishing up a waxing. While this place might not be great for everyone, it's cool for me. I usually go to Hair M every 6 weeks, because i hate paying the tabs there. At Bricks, my 12 dollars was a refreshing cost for a pretty good, not great, but pretty good haircut. After all, it's 12 bucks people.. If you factor in the entertainment and great conversation, I think I end up owing them a few bucks.. Maybe I'll send a check? Definitely going back.. Maybe even more frequently than every 6 weeks like my head is used to. read more

Eric is the most overbearing, self-aggrandizing barber I've ever encountered. Every few minutes he would stop cutting hair to assure me that this was the best haircut of my life (I'd call it mediocre at best). I believe my haircut would have been of much higher quality if Eric focused more on cutting hair and less on explaining his "theories" (aka unfounded opinions based on rudimentary understanding) on endorphins, quantum mechanics, and human psychology. This exercise in bad taste was capped off by Eric dousing my neck and face in a cloud of talc after I explicitly told him I was allergic to talc. Eric asserted no fewer than 15 times that he has many people who come to see him every two weeks; however I believe these people are there for the sideshow that is Eric rather than for quality haircuts. read more

Ok, the haircut on got on 12/23 is life-changing. It's now 01/07 and it's still the best haircut of my life. I actually woke up, rolled out of bed, and had cute hair this morning. I even took a picture in my bathroom mirror - you know - one of those iPhone-fueled naked pictures...Yep, I took one of those because my hair looked AWESOME! As of 12/23/10, I'm changing my rating from 4 to 5 stars. These guys have given me the best haircuts of my life. EVERY TIME. Yes, these were the best and the second best haircuts I've gotten in Portland. Eric, the owner, knows what he's doing and does it well. His staff...I'm not so sure about. Dude waxed my nose and eyebrows very efficiently. Pretension in a Portlandesque snotty-hipster sort of way can get thick at times. Four and a half stars. read more

Not only have I known Chelsey a looooooong time, but Ive been into Bricks and had my hair done by her.. and it turned out GREAT! I dont know what David's problem is.. but Im thinking that it MIGHT be the fact that he was posting a nasty bulletin on Valentines Day instead of going on a hot date. You are obviously just a very sad person, and are making jabs at other people to take the focus away from your own sad self. The environment at Bricks is not only the best you'll find when looking for a barber shop, but the hair cuts and complimentary wax are exceptional. Bricks is a cool little shop just down the road from my house. I stopped in for a much needed hair cut and was completely comfortable in thier place. The owners Eric and Chelsey are a perfect couple, proud of what they do. I have never had a "fun" expierence going to a barber before, but they changed that fact. I heard great stories, laughed and totally enjoyed being there. Both are quite knowledgable in their craft and enjoy doing what they do. She gave me an hour and a half hair cut!! That's what I call attention to detail. I recommend this place to those who want to step outside of traditional cookie cutter salons, and get a real hair cut from real people. Thanks guys. With best man duties at a wedding this weekend I needed a trim and I needed it to look good. Everything about my experience there has me happy to come back next time I need a cut. My hair (and eyebrows!) look great after Eric's work, chairside manner could not be beat, I was more than happy to have a PBR during my post-work visit, and Chelsea gave my daughter her first professional haircut with such style and grace that I wonder why we've been waging this battle at home for the last several years. Big lover of Brick's. Not the best haircuts, to be honest, and the atmosphere isn't my type, but I can see how some might like it. Friendly guy, that Eric, though - and I was really impressed by how compassionate he is. When I saw that he was employing that girl with cancer there, I thought, this is a barber who gives people a chance. I really hope that the chemotherapy is going well. Brick's is the best barber shop in Portland hands down. Speaking from a man's perspective you get everything you could ask for. There's stimulating conversation, and I think that Eric and Chelsea can get along with just about everyone, men women, kids, E.T.'s, Sasquatch whatever. It seems that the address on yelp is incorrect. The place is at 11642 SW Pacific HWY, not Ave. The barbershop is located below and to the right of George's Giant Hamburgers. I have come here several times and each time has been an awesome experience. Eric even offers you a cold beer to drink while he cuts your hair. I never had a haircut I liked until Chelsea cut my hair! I have very curly fine hair and it is challenging to cut. I have tried going to expensive salons with no luck. This is the only place I'll get my haircut. Eric knows how to cut hair and is very entertaining. I get my eyebrows waxed there on occasion too. Last time he even waxed my nose hair at no additional charge. You could go somewhere else, but why would you want to. And if you want, there's always a cold Pabst in the fridge waiting for you assuming you're 21 or older. read more
