For some easy urban exploration, if you head to the intersection of Northside Drive and Donald Lee, right outside of Tech, there's a bridge that hangs off over the highway. Originally built in 1912, the bridge has fell out of use a while ago, and now just the beginning remains on the west side of the highway. While not that secret of a place, it does offer a good view of Atlanta and is pretty easy to access. NOTE: if you do plan on stopping by, homeless DO live on and around the bridge. If you go, bring some friends for your own safety and don't aggravate the people living there. Most are very accommodating if you announce your presence and treat them with respect. read more

This location offers an interesting view at a cost... Safety. There are homeless people all around and the thick bushes and odd location help obscure the view from the street. Don't try to make this a romantic trip, but it does make for an interesting adventure if you're up for it. read more

An amazing night of art. You can't be disappointed…read more There was this weird chick standing on the sidewalk though, and it was as if she had been caught in this square pyramid made of chicken wire about 4 feet in height. To clarify, she was standing up, and this piece of hardware only reached to about her waist, and her arms were tangled in it. Moving on.... She kept saying in this ominous voice, "Come look in the mirrooooor". Over and over. The repetition was eerily monotone. So of course, I went to go over to look in the mirror. Low and behold, upon looking down at the mirror placed on the ground, I was able to view a fairly graphic angle of this woman's unmentionables. (call me if you want the details) Oh Atlanta. I love you. Also, like I mentioned at the top, there were some very cool art installations, and you can walk around with an open container, so bring a 6 pack and split it with a friend.

Without the graffiti this would be just another dank, gray, slightly sinister or drably boring traffic tunnel with vehicles choking pedestrians with exhaust. But now you get spray can fumes added to the mix! A couple people have also said urine stench. I didn't happen to smell that on my two trips on my southern sojourn but I believe it offends nostrils at times. I did see a homeless person who I tried not to disturb as well. That's life in a big city though. The Ann Arbor graffiti alley back home sometimes gets the homeless and sometimes you might smell piss there, especially in one certain spot. I'd venture to say you'd get both those things with or without graffiti and the stream of artists and onlookers might even have some looking for bushes nearby instead of relieving themselves here. I spotted lots of young people going to and from bars on a weekend night. I'm sure lots of weed is smoked here and tons of pictures are taken. How many pictures would be taken here without the graffiti? And right around the corner at one end is a massive wall stretching for I don't know how long covered with huge colorful murals for as far as I walked. So, hey, legal murals are represented, too and a nice primer on "graffiti vs. street art" is there for anyone to take in. This here tunnel probably keeps more than a few malcontents from tagging any of those murals. Local color aplenty here and it's constantly changing. I think I like it better than the Ann Arbor graffiti alley though my sample size here is admittedly small, just a couple nights in February 2026 as opposed to dozens of trips stretching over a few years in Ann Arbor.

You've seen the green little…read morebuilding at the corner of Charles Allen and 10th St. If it's sunny, there's a line of people, some curious gawkers, others dancing the always recognizable pee-pee dance. What kind of E-Ticket curiosity could lead to such a line? Are they queuing up for Hannah Montana tickets? Perhaps a Disneyesque ride? My friends, they're lining up to see the frakin' robot bathroom. The ominous silver door slides open, Star Trek-style, to reveal a high-tech room where touching surfaces is pared down to a minimum. Of course, I did notice the signs were all in braille which found me pitying the poor blind guy who's got to feel his way around the walls of a public bathroom. Nevertheless, the door slides open where you are greeted with a gentle, but prodding metallic voice commanding you to press the blue button and shut the door. You have 20 seconds to comply. Once the door is closed, the disembodied robot bathroom voice informs you that you have ten minutes to do your business. Programmed as such, no loitering or heroin fixes here. No sex either, but only because I wouldn't know what to do with the other eight minutes. Blue buttons abound within this iron giant. Press this for toilet paper. Press this for paper towels. Press this to find Sarah Connor. The strains of Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now" (no lie) float through the air as you face the stainless steel Fiesta Bowl. Similarly, the sink is a stainless steel indentation in the wall that selectively spurts out soap, water and hot air, depending on your hand placement. The toilet flushes either when you start washing your hands or when the door opens to let you out. Yes, depending on when the toilet flushes, the line outside will know if you washed your hands, so wash those filthy things, Skippy. We know where they've been. Press the blue button to let yourself out. Make sure to stand facing the door when it slides open and ask the crowd outside, "Excuse me, is this the sixth floor?" They love that, especially the guy whose been waiting for 15 minutes doing the pee-pee dance two people back. Every few visitors or so, the door will stay shut for an extended period of time (a few minutes) while the bathroom (or at least the toilet) cleans itself. I think that's what was happening at least. It was either doing that, or it was plotting the destruction of the human race. Robots are like that, you know. So flying cars and jet packs? Not yet. Moon bases and time travel? Not quite. But the future of robot bathroom technology is right here in Piedmont Park. And it is beautiful. End of line.

Trust me when I say that it isn't fun, especially when you're on the 7th or 8th weekend in a row. When there's a festival at Piedmont Park, you're in luck. The Robot Bathroom will likely have a line, but it's worth it. The seat is cleaned after each patron. There's room to move about. It has light and a full length mirror. But best of all? AIR CONDITIONING. Thank you, Robot Bathroom, for providing a quick 5 minute non-stinky respite for those of us who need it. You don't know how nice it is to have a place where you can reapply your lipstick in quiet, cool peace after 6 hours in the blazing sun.

This convergence of piece, person, and cultural context became even more of a focal point following the paradigmatic shift from Romanticism to Modernism. Thus, a modern piece as the Fifty-Four Columns is meant to reflect a sense of place contextualized by the ever dynamic skyline of Atlanta looming in the background; this juxtaposition is even more striking in a changing neighborhood such as the Old Fourth Ward. I also understand that public art is about the democratization of art, improving its access to all in order to generate a sense of community in this increasingly transient world. That said, this piece both sucks AND blows. In fact, for the longest time, I thought it was an abandoned construction site for a new loft complex a developer just never got around to finishing. I've flushed better art than this. So apologies to the artist, Sol le Witt, if this wasn't your intended response. You can submit your own review if you want. And to those of you walking the trails of Freedom Park, go ahead and check the, um, art out. At least now you know what it's called.

My fear was justified. I only hope I can warn the rest of you in time. What has been seen cannot be unseen. How was this thing selected? I suspect this is the result of a long strange trip involving hookers and blow, and when the haze wore off, the tiny remaining budget was spent on cinder blocks and day laborers and "fuel" to justify how the resulting columns are the true artistic expression of the clay, that the artist was powerless to prevent this metamorphasis. How many tax dollars were wasted on this "sculpture"? How much is wasted every year to maintain and paint them? $7,500 for the last paint job in 2009 and its already peeling. This is the sort of thing that makes cutting public funding of the arts a great target.

If I had any doubt about how much I love my neighborhood, my experience tonight on the Candlelight…read moreTour of Homes solidified that I absolutely adore Grant Park. 2009 marked the 29th anniversary of the tour of homes, which is always held the second weekend in December. For $12 you get admission to eight beautiful homes from a variety of eras and styles that typify the diverse architecture of the area. My personal favorites were a beautifully restored 1910 Transitional Craftsmen bungalow (complete with a chicken coops in the backyard!) and a 1905 Queen Anne Victorian with an original hardwood staircase. But all the homes were completely stunning, expertly decorated, and softly lit with candles. A few owners even provided baked goods and hot cider, which proved a welcome handwarmer while strolling through the evening's misty rain. All the volunteers manning the houses were incredibly friendly, the owners of all the properties were incredibly gracious (and one couple even dressed in period clothing!), and a general feeling of goodwill and Christmas cheer seemed to accompany all the visitors. The Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes is truly a holiday attraction that is not to be missed. I already can't wait till next year!

I have no idea if there's a secret bunker or a Situation Room or if CJ Cregg is running the briefing room in the Atlanta White House. Fred Milano emigrated to the United States in 1979 and built a successful real estate business, riding the real estate boom of the 1990s and 2000s. So he built this tribute to democracy and the United States. The White House is private property and there is no parking in front but you might be able to stop your vehicle on the side street and pop out for a few quick pictures of this marvel. The Chinese Culture Center of Atlanta is located behind Atlanta's, technically Chamblee's,…read moreChinatown mall. I'm not sure what the official name of the building is, but it's owned by the Taipei Economic and Culture Office (TECO) of Atlanta and the organization's name is what's sprawled atop the building's entrance. Therefore, this center and its activities are geared more towards Taiwanese-Chinese people as opposed to mainland Chinese people. Making this evident is the flag of Taiwan, which is prominently displayed inside the center. However, the flag of China is nowhere to be seen. So perhaps this place should be called the Taiwanese Culture Center instead. My personal experience with the Chinese Culture Center is somewhat limited, but having several friends of Chinese/Taiwanese descent who grew up in Atlanta, I've heard a lot about it. For example, one of my friend's moms has been the traditional Chinese dance instructor at the center for many years. Some other friends of mine grew up taking Mandarin lessons at the school here, at the behest of their parents. I believe Chinese calligraphy lessons are also taught here. The inside of the building looks like a school gymnasium/auditorium. It's a big open space that can be utilized for a variety of purposes. The building has been around for decades and looks a bit dated now. Still completely functional. The building has multiple stories with restrooms located on the second floor. There's also a stage. I have been to a couple different events here. They include the Chinese New Year celebration and the "Tasting the Flavors of Taiwan" festival. The center is probably best known for its Chinese New Year festivities, which comes complete with food tastings, arts and crafts, traditional stage performances (dance, singing), and New Year lion dance and dragon dance. The Chinese New Year celebration takes place each year over two days. Thousands of people flock to the center over New Years weekend. Parking used to be a nightmare, but beginning in 2014, people can park for free in the nearby Interactive College of Technology parking lot. The parking lot is close enough to the event so you can walk over. There is also a free shuttle service which runs between the parking lot and the Culture Center. This was a great improvement. In 2014, the price to attend the Chinese New Year celebration was $5 per adult. I believe children under 3 feet tall got in free. A large portion of the center's parking lot is reserved for a makeshift tent which is used for extra space for vendors and other exhibitors. The vendors are mostly independent artists selling arts and crafts such as paper lanterns, intricate origami, traditional Chinese/Taiwanese paintings, apparel, and accessories (e.g. bags). Another part of the parking lot is roped off for the popular lion and dragon dances. In years past, the lion and dragon dances began at noon. To get a good "seat," it's best to start surrounding the dance area around 11:30am. Another good spot to view the dance, though further away, is from a ramp on the backside of a building which faces the parking lot. You'll know what I'm talking about when you're in the parking lot. The lion dance and dragon dance are fun to watch. In the lion dance, it's two lions who are dancing/playing with each other. In the dragon dance, it is a long dragon which chases the sun. At the end of each dance, cash donations in traditional Chinese red envelopes are handed to the performers. I suggest going in the mornings (~10am) to avoid the rush. You will be packed in like sardines and inching by hundreds of people at times. The spread of foods is fantastic (see my photos) and well worth it. Bring cash! I went to the "Tasting the Flavors of Taiwan" event in 2013. Admission was $5 per person and free for students with valid ID. This event was like Chinese New Years "light." Like Chinese New Year, live musical and dance performances took place throughout the duration of the event. Most foods were only $3 each and included authentic Taiwanese cuisine such as ba-wan (literal translation: "meat sphere") meat dumplings. Various hearty rice and noodle dishes were offered and beverages such as bubble tea (from Boba Mocha) were for sale. Two guest chefs from Taiwan attended and performing a cooking demonstration. They also made an impressive fruit and taro carving (see my photos). All in all, it was a fun and well-attended event for the Taiwanese community of Atlanta.

This is a much sleepier Northern suburb of Atlanta than the nearby Doraville and Chamblee and Buford. There's a little less going on. Yet it has 5 times the population of CH and DO and four times as much as Buford. Suburban sprawl. This burb is bigger than most American cities. Dunwoody has half as many people as the City Of Buffalo, for example. Nearby highlights: In neighbouring Doraville, Sweet Hut Bakery where you can hang out late night and people watch and get fat, and Taco Veloz which is, well, not as speedy as the name suggests, but amphetamines are. In neighbouring Chamblee, go to the Chinatown Food Court, get Lamb Cumin with homemade noodles at Chongqing, and get Lamb Cumin sticks at Tsingtao brother in the same court. Further north, get a Brown Sugar Milk Tea at Snowflake.
