This business is taking up a prime corner on Main Street. It's always dark inside, and doesn't even have a real sign. It's a warehouse, and should be in a warehouse district! It's really depressing to drive by it. Makes Oregon City look boring and deserted as it's right at the entrance to town. It should be a thriving coffee shop or marketplace with lights on inside!! Owner needs to rent the space and move elsewhere. Really brings down the vibe of the downtown area. read more

For the record what other people have said about Larry, the owner, it's true - he's a nice guy. He's worked hard to operate this business and now working to build a brew pub in downtown Oregon City. He'll bend over backward to help you out and get you what you need. That being said when I bought beer for a group of locals who were having a get together I should have read the label on the beer I bought because one bottle was expired by more than a couple years. It was intermingled with all the other hundreds of bottles on the shelves. Now I know it might be difficult to keep track of what's fresh and what's expired but there's actually no excuse. You either know what's in your inventory or you don't. And if you're going to sell to the general public you better know. Larry was good to give me a refund but the recipient didn't want another beer and it's kind of a personal joke with this same group now. I, myself, am reluctant to make any future purchases only because I don't get down to the downtown that much (more of a pass-way off the arch bridge) and parking is ridiculously stupid. Be very careful buying anything here that is perishable. The liquid yeast I purchased was months past the "best by" date. I was told to wait longer for my wort to show activity but ended up pitching dry yeast to be certain, as I never had problems before getting the fermentation going. And the scale weighing my malt extract stuck, so is not accurate. read more

Yes I recently have a fascination for the old style drinks, and I love, love, love to make things! One evening my sweetie suggested we make our own Ginger Beer, I was like hell yeah! We googled to find recipes, and came across a blog from a Portland bartender, Jeffrey Morgenthaler from Clyde Common, and low and behold he had a great recipe to use! The next morning I was searching places to find my supplies....and this is what brought me in here. I am not a beer maker or wine maker, a consumer of the drinks, yes I am! I was thrilled to see there was a supply store in the OC, so off I went to buy bottles and cuvee yeast! They have floor to ceilings racks in here, full of everything you would need! Glasses, bottles, corks, caps, flavorings, and a bunch of stuff that I had no idea what it was for! I'm guessing this is your one stop place if you are making beer or wine. They also have a whole isle dedicated to already made beer, shelved by region and country from Oregon to Ireland. My batch of ginger beer came out so good, I'm already planning another trip back for more bottles! And who knows....maybe venture into some wine making too! read more

For anyone who has a notion to make their own beer, this is the first stop you should make. They have everything you need here....books, carboys, fresh ingredients, bottles, equipment, even kits that include all the ingredients you need in perfectly portioned amounts along with instructions. Using a kit is like making a Betty Crocker cake. It's an easy, fun way to try it out and see if it's something you like. It's not going to produce the best results, but it gives you a 'taste' of the experience without getting too heavily invested. That being said, once you get bitten by the home-brew bug, chances are you'll be here often. Now for those who want to try their hand at wine making, this is also your spot. Though I haven't yet wandered this path I know enough about the shop to see that they offer everything you'll need to make your own bottles of heaven, including labels, bottles, and corks. You might have a hard time finding the place as they have stuff displayed in the windows from one corner to midway down the block. And occasionally they have been closed when their hours clearly show they should be open. My suggestion is to call ahead to be sure someone is there. There's not one bad thing about this locally-owned and operated homebrew store! Everyone else has already sung Larry's praises, but I will too: Larry is THE NICEST!! He remembers my (and apparently everyone else) name after just being in there a few times. None of the people who work there make you feel dumb for being a beginner and they love geeking out and talking about homebrewing no matter what part of the subject you touch. I can't say enough good things about my experience there. Larry is great. He is an encyclopedia of Beer knowledge and happy to help even if you're a complete noob. When asking him questions, I didn't feel like a complete idiot for asking questions, which is nice. They have all the supplies you'll ever need - hops (fresh and not), malts, equipment, bottles, everything!! They'll show you how to mill your malts and what you need to make your cleaning or brewing process easier or better. Love it. This is a very rewarding hobby, made easy by Larry. read more

The selection of bottled beers is extensive...However, they need to relabel the shelves with the proper regions... The prices are decent, too. The owner was there on a "closed" day and he offered to stay until we got there - which I thought was pretty awesome. It was hard for me to stand the moldy smell inside the store - I have a sensitive AND very keen sense of smell...But we weren't there that long and it was manageable. The store is crammed pack with stuff so it's kind of hard to take it all in - I think if would be incredibly hard if you weren't sure of what you wanted or knew what & where to look for it. 5 stars for service. The lady who helped me was really friendly, dug around the store for a few items and gave me tips on my cranberry vodka making endeavors. She even carried the box full of jars and bottles out to my car for me since I had a toddler in tow. Lots of gift items like signs, beer teeshirts and coasters and I'm definitely stopping here first when I need any sort of specialty glass bottles. I've been here three times. The first two time the service was terrible. Just went for the third time...it's 3pm on Sunday and they're closed/lights off/door locked. I called yesterday to make sure they'd be open and they said yes. Sign says they're supposed to be open. Made a special trip...disappointed again by this business. Excellent store and staff. The owner is crazy knowledgeable about beer, wine, cheese, and lots of other stuff you might like to make. His staff know a lot too. I've only been in a few times, but he was able to give me some extremely helpful advice and some great recipe ideas. I also brought in a bottle of something I made that went wrong, and he was able to work out the problem with me by tasting it. Prices are good as well, and there is no push to buy the spendier stuff. The shop was cluttered and unorganized, prices were higher than the other places I shop at, and weighing/milling my own grains was an unpleasant experience with a tiny hand-cranked mill and an inaccurate postal scale (we couldn't figure out how to read the "accurate" scale and the owner was busy with other customers). I went here out of convenience because I was running an errand near by, but won't be back. The owner was very nice, but with so many fantastic brew stores in Portland it takes a lot more than having a good person behind the counter. My husband and I spent a decent amount of time in here recently and had a great experience! We were amazed at all the different bottled beers and general selection in the store. The owner was extremely helpful and nice. He went above and beyond with all of his help in getting us all of the legging equipment we needed. Worst brew supply shop experience ever. TLDR: Looking for supplies? Don't ever shop here unless you're severely desperate. When I showed up on Sunday at 1:20pm, the "Open" sign was up, all the lights were on, but there was a note saying "Back at 1:30, Larry" and the doors were locked. Honestly, this did not bother me as previous reviewers have mentioned that the owner frequently does not honor his advertised hours of operation and I was prepared to wait around a little bit. Plus, it's only 10 more minutes of standing in the cold and sometimes you gotta leave your post because something important has come up. I totally get it, no big deal. At 1:31pm I called his cell phone (it was posted on the note). I wasn't impatient or rude, I mean he put the number on the sign. I just wanted to let him know that he has customers. It was a pleasant conversation and he said he'd be there in less than 5 minutes. When he showed up 14 minutes later, there were now four parties of people patiently waiting outside. Seriously, I get it, sometimes you can't just rush out the door and what's a few extra minutes to wait? Again, no big deal. I walked in and yes it's slightly cluttered and dusty, but I kind of like that vibe, personally. It's casual and laid back. When I went to the grain section, I was very surprised to see buckets of grain stacked on top of each other several rows deep, with the majority of labels hidden from view. Consequently, gathering my grain bill would take a while and I couldn't even immediately see that what I wanted was even in stock. Add that to the fact that all he's got is an ancient auger-style hand-cranking mill. "Ok," I thought, "this is going to take a while, but if all the grain is here and I can get the crush I want, then I'm a happy customer." So I patiently wait for him to finish up with a customer who is just starting to learn about distillation. I listen as the owner says stuff like "If you've been learning anything on the internet, then we need to first throw away all that stuff you've learned because 97% of it is wrong. And then you need to read a book instead and learn the right stuff." It was then apparently obvious that this guy is not only the type of homebrew shop worker that only knows his way and all other ways are wrong, but he's also discounting "the internet." With his very bold, matter-of-fact method of sharing information, this guy has a very sad combination of traits. My turn arrives and I ask him if he has an electric mill available as an alternative to the hand crank. He says no, and that's fine. It just means that it will take me a little longer. Especially if I need to double-crush since I'm brewing in a bag. I then ask him "Can it do a fine crush?" "No," he says confidently, "it does a perfect crush." "Ok," I responded - politely, mind you - "I'm brewing in a bag so I'm looking for a fine crush." Get this. Wait for it. He then says with great authority "No. You're mistaken." I smiled and said "See ya later!" and walked out the door. I shouldn't have to argue with the salesman to get him to sell me something. People, he's not a good teacher. He's not an expert. I'm sure he knows a lot of great stuff! But the truth is that excessive tannin extraction occurs only at high mash temp and at high pH - which will not happen with my massive stout grain bill. Furthermore, I'm brewing in a bag, so I couldn't care less about the dangers of a stuck mash. If he was a good teacher, he would've asked me why I want a fine crush instead of just telling me that I'm mistaken. That's almost more insulting than just saying I'm wrong. If he was an expert, he would've just asked me about my lautering technique and would've quickly understood that I'M NOT LAUTERING. Anyway. I give the owner and the supply shop a zero out of five and the bottle shop a four out of five. So we'll split the difference and call it two stars. read more

Old, wood floors and ten-foot shelves of brewing heaven. Hundreds of craft brews in a bottle, and just about any home brewing supply you could ever find online - hardware and ingredients alike. Larry is very matter-of-fact. He'll tell you his price, and why it is what it is. He knows what you can pay online, and he knows you have to pay shipping, so he undercuts that amount to ensure you both find the trip to his store financially sound. Not to mention, he will help you learn. He's a little funny about ideas you may have learned on the popular forums, but he almost assuredly knows more about the science of brewing than the majority of professional brewers on the planet. If you shop here, you will know Larry and his wife. Both are great people that treat you like family. Larry's asked me to answer the phone when he's busy. His shop isn't the most conveniently-located for me, but I go there to show my loyalty to a person who has spent hours of his life explaining to me how to perfect my craft. He knows a lot, and he wants to share it. My beer was a frustrating hobby of passion when I met him. My beer is now my favorite beer on the planet. He taught me how to brew to my tastes. He is awesome and he deserves my patronage, so I will always come back. read more

Great prices. Great selection of products. An amazing amount of knowledge from (I can't recall his name right now) the guy who always seems to be working. I would say the owner. He is extremely patient with us newbies and that couldn't be a better feeling. It makes you more confident when you have a person willing to explain not just what to do, but why you should be doing it. I can bring in a written recipe and he will rummage around and snag every bit I need, if they are out of something or generally don't carry it, he knows the exact substitution and the reason the recipe called for that ingredient in the first place. I have double checked a few items because I am being over-cautious and the results online were right inline with what we were told. Now, if you are looking at equipment, he won't try to up-sell anything, in fact, if there is a suitable similar product for less, he will direct you that way if it is a better/equivalent product. One last thing, if you don't see it in the store, he will order it for you right then and there. read more

Being an Oregon City resident, I wanted to support my local brew supply store so I gave them a call. A lady answered the phone and was very short. Still I inquired about specific products and prices. Since I needed them right away, I drove down to be "greeted" by the same not-so-cheery person. Normally, I would have walked out of the store because she was just plain rude. Then the prices were horrible. $8 for WLP004, (yeast)? Come on. I can get the same yeast (and have) at Brew Brothers for about $6.25... I am used to paying about $20 bucks to brew a 5gal batch of beer but for only the yeast and 4lbs of dark LME it was more than $21. I will not be shopping here again due to rude employees and horrible prices. Buyer be fore-warned. read more
