Place smells, looks like it hasn't been dusted in 50 years or had a delivery of new beer in several years. I wouldn't trust a beer from there and all the barrel aged stuff is leftover stuff that didn't sell in its time. A real disappointment based on high reviews. read more

I've been coming here for about two years, and it's time to give them a review. If you come here for the first time, you should dedicate two hours or so because the choices are overwhelming. You just want to keep looking and looking and looking. They actually have the beer divided by country. Everyone there is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about beer. And you can get samples of what's on tap. I believe they usually have about 30 different beers on tap. There's a big Blackboard as you walk in that describes the beer they have on tap. Dedicate ten to fifteen minutes to go through it though. They also have a walk-in cooler that requires a jacket when you're in there. read more

The only reason I walked in here the other day is because of yelp and the photos I saw. Looking at the storefront you would never know what kinds of amazing treasures you will find inside! I assumed that it would be just one of those tacky discount stores that have good deals on cartons of cigarettes and cheap plastic trinkets made in China mixed in with some awful crap beer like Hamms and big bottles of Ripple or some such wine. Au contraire mon amis! I found myself walking down all the aisles in wonder and disbelief.. A bazillion bottles of beer on the walls.. or I should say on the shelves.. and most of them are microbrews! They've also got some Belgian ales and other beers from other countries too. It was truly overwhelming. They have a lot of different wines and I managed to find some decent Chardonnay from 2 of our local wineries. Best of all - "cheap".. I spoke to the younger Asian couple (with their brand new baby nearby) and found out they've been here for 2 years. And I've been ignoring the place all that time! WTH! Not anymore. I explained to him that I did not expect to see all these amazing beer choices. The father told me about his dad and how he still digs his Hamms as that's what got him through the Vietnam war. I then started thinking about why they call this place Cheap "Charlie's".. not sure if the reference is accurate but it seems to fit quite well. I made out of there with 2 bottles of Chard and a bottle of IPA for under $25.00! This Charlie will be back for sure! read more

There are lots of things I really love about this place, and here they are in order: 1. For the amount of breweries represented, and the huge selection, you don't feel overwhelmed and the atmosphere is very NOT PRETENTIOUS (which is becoming rare in the pdx area, I really liked not feeling weird hipster pressure. Plus like, it's Gresham, so very laid back) 2. The kegs!!! Really great place to get them at a reasonable price, perfect for a backyard party or even a bigger event. 3. Already mentioned, but an amazing selection of beers and breweries from all over the state are represented. Even if you already know what you want, it's so fun to look around. 4. Friendly!!! I freaking love this place. Top quality growler fills, nice clean lines, amazingly deep selection, and prices lower than the grocery store. Great people. Lord, I cannot sufficiently express how great it is to have this level of expertise at your fingertips, and a depth of stock that no matter what you need, they'll probably have it. People will invariably compare CC's to John's. Not even the same league, kittens. Sure, John's will have that obscure pre-skunked Danish fir beer. But I've gotten very expired beer there, and never had that problem at CC's. The prices are significantly lower here. The service is great at both places. The real kicker for CC's is the growler fills, though. $1-2 cheaper than most other places with fastidiously clean lines so your beer never tastes weird. They do the crowler thing, too. Lots of good selections. Further, the beer cave is super cold. That's where the macrobrews largely live, and everyone knows that if you're drinking malted hop-scented fizzy water, super cold is the way to go. Give yourself some time if you're going to dig around. They don't mind that at all and with some time you may be able to find whatever bizarre Belgian oaked lambic is out there. Oh. Bonus points: If you like the kombucha, tap kombucha is cheaper here than elsewhere, and there's always tap kombucha. read more

Like a kid in a candy store, like Imelda Marcos (remember her?!?) in the shoe dept., and like me on vacation anywhere/any time, my Mr. was in seventh (beer) heaven throughout our week and a half trip through Oregon!! He sampled dozens of different IPA's, his personal favorite, and all sorts of other local brews, and (probably) wished he could take home one (or more) of each!! Well..... Nope, sadly, he couldn't do that, but what he WAS able to do was check out this AWESOME shrine to some (all?) of the latest/greatest brews here in the state, and beyond!! Well organized, reasonably priced, and lots of great help available if you're having trouble making your "monumental" decision!! Bob settled on a great local IPA (can't remember the name) and found some Oregon wine also was a tough choice to make. The prices are dirt cheap and they have just about any beer worth drinking If the owners not there, there's a really nice young guy with a vast knowledge of beer. Huge selection. With several beers, ales, etc., Cheap Charlie's is the only place near around Portland to source them. Example: several of Fuller's English ales are regularly in stock in good quantity. Clean and well managed shop. Very helpful staff. They can order what you wish an in most cases it will come in their weekly order. read more

Outstanding selection of beer and wine. Up there with John's Market and other similar bottle-shops. Whenever I am looking for something specific, I make sure to stop by and check here. I have had luck many times. Periodically when I stop in they offer tastings of wine or beer by someone from a local brewery or vineyard. Nice addition. Will definitely return. read more

Fabulous selection - no frills. Fun tastings from time to time. My personal recommendation is the "Wells" banana bread beer...it is in the cooler. Not kidding this beer is really good...men liked it too lol. There is also voodoo doughnuts flavored beers by rouge brewery...which to date I have not tried myself...but have never heard good things about...so don't get sidetracked by it lol.try the wells or at least try them both. Me likey this store! MANY beers to choose from! You can order kegs, special-order beers, request they carry certain types, etc... The owner is friendly and helpful. The prices are good. They have a tap-room/growler fill area. They need a better lay-out, though. If it were my store, I would put newer items or specialty beers/promotions upfront. I would ALSO have a mailing list to send out promotions and ACTUALLY offer a monthly promotion/sale of some sort on beer, wine, growler fill...something - anything! Overall, I really like this shop and would recommend to anyone wanting to buy the "special" beer. read more

I believe I've mentioned in previous reviews that my husband and I are beer geeks to the hard core. We brew, collect and drink the yummy ales and lagers and so beervana suits us. Then we moved to the burbs, which was initially a quandary for our hobby. Luckily, we've discovered nice little pockets of brewtopia in the 'Ham...like Charlie's. It's a well-stocked bottle shop and the owner is a delightful fellow beek. We can usually find what we're after without having to trek into Belmont Station, between Charlie's and The Hoppy Brewer just three blocks away. He has a few taps too, for growler filling. The only caution is to check bottle dates when possible. Some items do sit for awhile, but that's in any beer store. Overall, we are happy to part with our hard-earned cashola for quality beers at Charlies. read more

Best beer and wine selection I've found in Portland area. It's a bit far if you aren't out east but it is worth a stop if you are passing thru Gresham. Personally, this will be worth a monthly trip to stock up on my favorite beers. The selection is broad and deep. I could find all of the brands and styles I enjoy, including the full offering from Oskar Blues and Paulaner (my faves). They have many, many hundreds of beers in stock, maybe over a thousand. They also have a gigantic wine selection. If you can't find what you want, ask the owner. He'll help you find it or order it for the store. He said about half of the selection are his choices and the rest is a growing list of customer requests. Considering the vast selection they stock, the prices are great and the same or cheaper than you would find elsewhere. This store is worth a visit if you are looking to explore new beers or searching for your favorite brew that can't be found anywhere else. read more
