British cookies and "biscuits" at Bridgham & Cook
    Bruce K.

This charming little shop is chock full of all sorts of interesting British goodies. From scarves and sweaters in a multitude of tartan colors and patterns to British cookies and teas, they have a ton of interesting stuff for the Anglophile in your life. It was the roundel that caught my eye - the symbol of the London Underground - and so I stopped in for a browse and walked out with a small bunch of gifts for my wife and my daughter. Prices aren't cheap but they are definitely less than what you'll pay to have things shipped over. The store is clean and neat and very tidy. [Review 10026 overall, 1610 of 2018.]

This is a unique find in the midst of the chain store outlet shopping that can be Freeport Maine. It is an independently operated store selling a variety of things all from the U.K. The holiday season is a perfect time to stop by the store or shop the web-site; you will undoubtedly find wonderful gifts for people on your holiday list. Of particular interest to me right now is their selection of tartan blankets and scarves made of 100% lambswool by Lochcarron of Scotland. These imported tartan scarves seem like a steal at $32.00. I got one as a gift and one for me. I like that kind of shopping. I love the look of a Scottish wool tartan scarf peeking out from the inside of a coat or jacket. One of my coats is all black and the hint of the nicely colored plaids can really liven things up on a drab day. The tartans include classic designs like Black Watch and Dress Campbell. Many come in both ancient and modern styles. But you'll find tartans you might not have seen before too. The scarf I just purchased for myself is Cameron of Erracht in modern styling. B&C also sells British University scarves which I think are quite cool and very fun although might be considered pretentious to wear if one did not actually attend one of these schools. But if you like the colors and designs, I say go for it. However they would most definitely be the perfect gift for an alum or family member of one. http://www.britishgoods.com/1/products/product/1013-london-school-of-economics-political-science.html This store is a purveyor of one of my favorite UK to America imports: Barbour clothing and accessories. You can also find the special Barbour wax which you'll need if you re-wax your jackets yourself. B&C has a specialty foods selection of things hailing from the England, Ireland and Scotland. If anyone is missing their favorite treats from across the pond, they just might find them here. Some of these items like the candy would make for great stocking-stuffers. I love their selection of Henry and Charlotte Watson pottery: http://www.britishgoods.com/1/products/product/listing/56-henry-watson-s-potteries.html These pieces would make charming and useful hostess gifts. In particular I love the black pottery pieces. It's well worth a visit if you're in Freeport but don't let being far from Maine stop you; the website is great and on-line service is quick and reliable.

A neat shop that sells nice goods from across the Pond. This British goods shop sells a bit of everything including Barbour clothing, hats, scarves, apparel, quilts, teapots, glass sets, food (dry goods & chilled food), English tea, snacks, candy, gifts, games, decorations, and more. They also carry goods from Scotland and Ireland too. Check out the website at: http://www.britishgoods.com/ where you can shop online. Saw some Guinness beer glasses on sale for only $3 each, just in time for Father's Day. The Barbour jackets are very nice and stylish, which are priced over $300 each. Overall, it's a great little shop to for hard to find British, Scotish, & Irish goods. They have plenty of Irish Porridge Oats and Walker's Shortbread in stock, which I really enjoy! NOTE: The correct new address is 116 Main St, Freeport, ME 04032 In 2006, the store at 6 Bow St was destroyed by fire.

Very unexpected find in downtown Freeport. I love British import stores. I usually find something in the food aisle to find and this was no different. They have a huge assortment of British snacks and a fridge full of dishes including haggis. I only bought some potato chips that featured grouse. Interesting. They really didn't taste that unique but had a blueberry flavor (which is one of the ingredients) that was oddly appealing. A great assortment of jewelry, kitchenware and clothing. Prices were very high on the clothing and other items but that's normal for anything that's imported. The chips were only $2.50 which was a great price. Definitely worth checking out!

I would say that both my wife and I agree to this particular location not being the best of Sherman's. Despite that if you are in the area and looking to support a local Maine bookstore it is a solid enough option. Firstly I will say all the staff we encountered were friendly, the first offering to move out of the way if we wanted to look at books close to where she was at. A second nicely asked us if we needed any assistance and lastly the staff who checked us out was friendly as well. Space wise I think it is lacking compared to some of the other Sherman's locations. Some of the areas felt a little too crowded. They do have everything you would expect from a Sherman's, new and popular books along with classics and hidden gems of every genre. Also stationary, stuffed animals, kids toys, gifts, souvenirs, and more. Prices seemed about the same as other locations and they do have their vast on-sale sections to secure good book deals. I would say if this is the first and only Sherman's you have visited do yourself a favor and check other ones out before fully judging the chain overall.

It's sort of like Etsy, but in a brick and mortar form. The Freeport Market is exactly the same concept where locals can rent space and display their items for sale. I forgot to mention all the items are "Maine Made" which I believe has to be requirement. I didn't speak with any staff so I can't speak to the customer service. You don't see them walking around much, but standing near the counter. The value for the items will vary as the renter sets the price for their items. Some look for a premium price on their items, other's look for a reasonable price understanding what the market says for those types of items. If you are looking for Maine made items and willing to pay a premium price on them, this store is for you, but you can typically get the items cheaper through their website or at a local craft fair.

Well, stop I did, to see if they had a gift for a friend's birthday. First, I love any store that smells like balsam as you walk through the door. The scent makes me feel like a kid again. I'm not from Maine (have been here long enough to feel at home), but as a kid we used to drive here from Ohio and spend a few weeks going up and down the coast. The smell of balsam reminds me of these trips. Second, I was shocked by the variety they had. Maple syrup, Maine souvenirs, crafting supplies, wooden figurines, and antiques. The have a sign stating that they "glue chairs". I didn't know that was a thing, but apparently, it is... They also sell wreaths and Christmas trees during the appropriate season. And finally, the owners were as nice as could be. They had out hot chocolate for the kids, and they wrapped my little gift up neatly. This little shop is well worth the drive into town because of how darn cute it is!
