As many others have said, we had a strange experience with the owner Elinor. She is agressive, and could communicate more clealy or effectivley with people. She would constanly stop the trail ride and have us all pose and arrange our horses for her to take pictures, which was super annoying and cut into our trail ride time which cost $240. I justified this by assuming she would send us the photos after the session, since she makes you leave all your belongings including phone prior to riding. After the ride when we followed up with her she refused to send us the photos. Not only just refused, but spent a good deal of time making up reasons as to why she would not send them. All this after stopping our ride and having us pose repeatedly for these photos. I went back and forth with her by text message asking her to send the photos. She would write long texts back saying they all have to be reviewed and gone over first and there were 5000 photos in front of us to go through... lol.. Said we can't just cut infront of outer people.. hmmm.. In a fraction of the amount of time she spent babling and going on about why she wasnt sending us our photos she could have just texted the photos to us. This woudl have been a reasonable normal thing to do. In addition you will be using riding helmets from a big garbage bin outside that other riders have just returned with no cleaning. Just something to keep in mind. To date we have not recieved any photos and she still refuses to send them. If anything changes I will update this post. We had a really enjoyable trail ride here and would recommend it, especially if you appreciate a direct and safety-focused approach. After reading some other reviews, I think it's important to set the right expectations. This is essentially a one-woman operation, run by an independent and hardworking owner, Elinor, who is deeply passionate about her horses. Her number one priority is the safety of the riders and her animals, and her entire system is built around that. Her communication style is direct, loud, and to-the-point. We found this to be a huge asset on the trails, as you can always hear her instructions clearly. She refers to riders by their horse's name, which is an efficient way to keep track of everyone. If you are good at following directions and want to be led by a confident, experienced guide, you will be in great hands. A few things to know: Policies are for a reason: You'll be asked to leave phones and keys in your car. This is partly for safety (things can easily fall on the trail) and, I suspect, to protect the integrity of her business. She is clear about her policies and expects you to follow them. She's a solo act: Because she runs everything herself, the trails aren't perfectly manicured, but she is an expert at navigating them and will guide you around any obstacles. The fields are truly beautiful and my friend said the long, rustic grasses blowing in the wind gave the ride a more authentic experience and reminded her the prairies in books she read growing up. Because Elinor is a one-woman superstar, this also means she's very busy, so be patient when it comes to receiving the photos she takes. She is accommodating: Despite her busy schedule, she was incredibly kind and responded to us at 11:30 PM the night before to add another rider to our group. Bottom Line: If you're looking for a polished, multi-staff operation with pristine trails and lots of hand-holding, this might not be the fit for you. But if you want an authentic, safe, and efficient riding experience led by a true horsewoman who knows what she's doing, you will have a fantastic time. She literally scorned and screamed at me for 10 minutes over the phone even when we were 17 minutes out. We paid in full after only booking one day in advance in off season. At the last minute she tried to get an extra $240 out of us because we were late. Really glad we didn't go because she seemed insufferable and really rude. Can't imagine it would have been a good experience. Also further, I put her on speaker phone while she was yelling at me and she was so rude she made my friend whose birthday it was and who was terrified to ride but had always wanted to try it soooo scared and not trusting of their services. I have never in my life experienced the harassment I experienced after leaving this one star review. The photo of my scratched up leg has mysteriously vanished too. I'm posting a screenshot of the message I received from this customer or the owner. News flash: No one is "out to get" Bridle Hill Farm. I have a life. I go on Yelp to review particularly good or particularly bad experiences I have. Maybe don't harass people who have visited this place. Despicable behavior. Stay FAR AWAY. I am absolutely flabbergasted that this place has over 1 star, let alone 3-4, on most sites! Please DO NOT take the first good review you see and go with it. My experience here was atrocious. I was informed upon arrival that "1 hour" meant "1 hour from the moment you step foot on the property," not the actual length of the ride. Their "pony ride" is not actually a pony, but a shorter sized horse (as seen in photo). That's a big scam as well Next, after I had put on my helmet, I was led to the ring with the horses. I'm no expert in riding, but I've volunteered at horse farms and the state of these animals was absolutely horrendous. They looked miserable and even as an amateur clueless rider I could tell that the saddle was not properly fitted and there were an absurd amount of blankets under it for some reason. I had a young teen in my company who had never ridden a horse on a trail before and he was nervous. Instead of explaining to him the procedure or displaying any empathy, the owner just made wild gestures with her hands and expected him to follow suit, thus magically learning how to ride a horse. In fact, this is all the instruction she gave any of us. The trail itself was borderline dangerous. At one point, I was wading through weeds and grass that was up to my thighs (on horseback) with no real path there. Another concerning part of the trail was when we were riding in a narrow line between shrubbery and a steep drop to the field. Not only was it nerve-wracking, but there were masses of uncleared thorns that ended up scraping me all over my legs and causing me to bleed. Attached is a photo of my (cleaned up) leg. There is so much more I can say, but I am appalled and disheartened by the way these poor animals are treated. Furthermore I am absolutely stunned that this horrific operation is allowed to continue and that the 3+ stars online will keep bringing them business. Many of the reviews are fake. This was my 3 year old son's first time on a horse and he couldn't have been more delighted. There were plenty of helmets for the kids and he easily found one that fit well. It was windy so he was given the choice of riding outside or inside, he chose inside. His pony was named Teddy, who is originally from Austria and is age 20. My son started his engagement with Teddy by saying hello and gently petting him. Teddy was well-trained and happy, we felt comfortable with our son riding on him. There was also a lovely dog named LuLu, who instantly became our friend. This is was a good experience overall and I'd recommend this place for younger children. read more

It's hard to choose where to start this review. As soon as we drove into the property, we were nastily greeted by the owner (Eleanor). She yelled across the property questioning why her dog (who was blocking us from parking) was barking. This definitely set the tone for the rest of the experience. We got no formal introduction and were sent off to "meet the horses" after getting our helmets. There was manure everywhere, and it was hard to walk around without stepping into it. The same dog who blocked us at the parking lot was roaming around EATING the manure. Eleanor didn't seem to care. Fast forward to our actual trail, we got no clear instructions on what to do if the horses didn't follow our lead. Eleanor ironically placed the most nervous rider on the most energetic horse... she was amused by the rider's anxiety and worry and laughed it off. She instead was hostile and proceeded to antagonize the rider. Upon returning from the trail, the other half of our group was ready for their turn. To our surprise, she spent most of their tour complaining about the first group. How much more unprofessional can someone be? Especially as the owner. There was no sense of security or confidence from Eleanor and it rubbed off on most of the group. Her rude and aggressive personality ruined the entire experience for us all. We wish we didn't give her the benefit of the doubt after reading the endless reviews complaining about her temperament and character. The last day on our upstate mini trip and we wanted to do something outdoorsy and animal related. It's prime farm and open acre territory so we peeped yelp for horse farms. We made an appointment for 2 PM for three people and even though it was raining we were still pumped. Not only was it raining it was cold and a little icy out too but we still roughed it, and damn I'm so glad we did. We had such an excellent ride with Eleanor and each of our horses were just as great. We went on all different trails and even some semi scary ones for us newbs, in the woods, down big hills and through rocky streams- but not once did I feel unsafe or worried. I'm so surprised by the handful of 1 star reviews for Bridle Hill Farm. Elinor, the owner, made the COVID policy very clear prior to arrival at the farm and was very kind when we came by. The day of our arrival, I was open and honest about my lack of experience with never having ridden a horse in my life. While my boyfriend is a more experienced horseback rider, Elinor explained the safest way to mount, steer, and handle the reigns, allowing me to copy her movements. She was a good teacher and I quickly learned the ropes as we set off for about 45 minutes on the trail. The sights around the farm were spectacular for the summer. Only minor inconveniences were the flies and overgrowth of prickle bushes (which were not her fault in the slightest!). Visiting our friend's country home in the Catskills, and looking for a fun group activity for us & the kids. Bridle Hills Farm looked good online, so we booked a 1 hour trail ride. When we got there , a woman told us they were getting the horses ready and we had to wait quite a long time. The horses were in horrible condition, bony and dirty with badly overgrown hooves. The saddles were stuck on top of many layers of dirty, torn pads. She said to pick a helmet from a dirty bin of really dirty helmets, and even though they didn't fit us, she yelled at us and said they were fine. My friend's son is only 5, and small for his age. He was given a saddle where the stirrups were way too long, and Elinor (owner) stuck his feet through the leathers and yelled at us when we questioned her. We later learned that the farm actually is just over 33 acres of open (badly overgrown) fields, and the trails they took us on were actually illegally trespassing on someone else's property. The "ride" was way shorter than an hour, which is surprising since the horses seemed to struggle to walk up and down the hills. When we questioned her, Elinor was so rude and verbally abusive, and told us that our hour started when we arrived, even though the horses were not ready at that time. Overall a dreadful experience, I strongly suggest that anyone who cares about the well being of their family and of the horses stay far away. I later (wish I had done it before we made the reservation) Googled "Bridle Hill Farm Horse Abuse", and boy was that an eye-opener! This place should be shut down! read more

This morning, I called bridle hill farms to arrange a pony ride for my 2.5 year old daughter, and was told that they were comfortable working with children her age. When we arrived, someone pointed to a bin of helmets and gave no instruction. My daughter was upset about putting on the helmet, and a young man (the owner's teenage son who was very polite) led a horse over to us and gave no instruction. He called his mother over and expressed concern about the saddle, and she said, "it's fine, just put her on." He then called her over a second time to express concern about the stirrups, and she dismissed his concern. I was not comfortable putting my crying daughter on a horse and asked if they could introduce her to the horse and tell her what to expect. Instead they told me I could hold the reigns and began walking on the trail as my daughter continued sobbing. We asked multiple times to stop and pet the pony, and he kept walking ahead of us. If my daughter was too young for this experience, I would have appreciated being told that when I called and texted to book the lesson, or paid the fee. If this farm offers lessons and rides to such young children, they need to have safe equipment and staff who is comfortable and experienced working with toddlers. There is no way this setup, with zero explanation or reassurance, could work for such a young child. We will not be returning, and do not recommend anyone with small children ride here. read more

I spent my whole childhood, right up until college, riding. I was dedicated and serious about it. I haven't ridden much in the intervening 25 years, but I tried out Bridle Hill on a whim with my two young kids when we were in the area for two weeks. I wish I had found it a week earlier! We ended up buying a package and riding as much as we possibly could. Elinor is a fabulous instructor. She is clear and puts effort into teaching the "Why" of things as much as the "How". Growing up, I didn't think too much about the mechanics of what we do. Of course, understanding those details makes you a better rider! And Elinor makes it easy to synthesize. She has a deep knowledge base, and her passion for the sport is evident. She's a first-rate teacher. She was wonderful with both of my kids, reading them well, and leaning into them as individuals. I couldn't believe how much my son's seat improved over the course of one week!! The farm is immaculate with beautiful views from the ring and a clean, huge indoor arena in case of bad weather. The horses are extremely well cared for. They are very responsive in the ring and are happy, comfortable, and secure when you are with them on the ground. It's been a rough spring, and Bridle Hill Farm was blam for our sad and tired souls. I wish I had five more stars to give! **I am adding this PostScript after reading some of the negative reviews. I know a healthy and happy horse when I interact with one. These horses are both. I'm shocked that anyone would say otherwise. Someone posted that Spotted Larry is a "sad small horse" and "not a pony". WOW! a pony IS A SMALL HORSE, look it up. It's a height thing. Horses come in all shapes and sizes, just like people. I spent a week with that funny guy, and he is not underweight at all. Someone mentioned that they thought the horses had the wrong tack on? Tack varies widely. People use multiple saddle pads for many different reasons, the simple fact that they have been put there is not incorrect. It's like fitting an ice skate, or ballet slipper - everyone is different and has a different approach to finding a good fit. I'm sad that someone posted a negative review because they didn't know anything about riding. It's unnerving that someone would look at healthy animals and see sickness. I've been around and personally rescued 2 neglected horses and I will never forget the experience. I can't express how far from neglected the sweethearts at Bridle Hill are. Edit to response: as soon as we left the area the horses are kept before we hit the trail we asked to stop. We did not ride until we asked to stop. Eleanor told us we had to go all the way around the building because she couldn't turn there (apparently no U turns allowed on the farm even though there was plenty of room). Again probably just to say we had our ride so she didn't have to offer a refund. Only gave it one star because I couldn't give it 0. Eleanor was rude, had no patience, and is better suited to work at a morgue than with children. My daughters horse started bucking before we even began so we decided we didn't feel safe. The place was also filthy. Couldn't step without standing in shit. She was also yelling at my daughter who cried because she was scared instead of explaining or encouraging. My 9 and 6 yr old daughters and I are staying at Villa Roma for a few days. To horse back ride at the hotel you need to be atleast 10 years old. This is one of the activities my daughters were really looking forward to. With Yelps help we found Bridle Farms and on short notice they were able to accommodate us. They were extremely friendly and attentive to all of us. My girls loved the ride through their property and woods. They loved it so much they asked if we can go back tomorrow!!! We were visiting Livingston Manor and our two daughters wanted to go horse back riding. Googled Bridle Hill Farm and decided to go there. When we arrived to the Bridle Hill Farm i called several times the number listed on all doors. After couple of minutes a woman comes up from the stable and with a nasty attitude "back up" and put your mask on. I said that im vaccinated and she said (pointing on my two little girls) they are not! There was no signs to put the masks and if there would be signs definitely we would put them on. My point is that no one should treat other people and especially customers. They could list on their website "by appointment only" . Update to the business owner's response. When we entered the property there was no signs to wear a mask. We did not leave because "no mask jo service"; we left because I didnt want my daughters (age 6 and 8) to deal with your rude attitude. 15 of us went to Bridle Hill Farm for a bachelorette party in July and it was awesome! The owners, Dan and Elinor, are incredibly genuine, friendly, and accommodating. We opted for the guided trail ride, which was $40 per person and included a little tutorial on how to ride a horse (it was the first time for many of us) and a scenic 35-40min ride through their grounds. I could see how the experience may be lacking though for those who are more experienced riders, but for us the tutorial, length of the ride, and difficulty of the trail were exactly what we were looking for. The horses are beautiful and well trained, and they also have two adorable dogs. Because we had so many girls, we split into 2 waves of horseback riding. While the other group was out riding, Dan gave us a tour of the farm and surrounding areas, took photos for us to help document our experience, and even gave us fresh farm eggs!! Their facilities are awesome and it seems like it would be a great place to take lessons or go horseback riding. Bridle Hill Farm - Coming back from the trail ride - Horseback Riding Near Me - Jeffersonville, New York

Had such a wonderful first time at Bridle Hill Farms recently. Found them online closer to other activities and events we had planned on throughout the day. Reservations were easy to do online and once date and time is chosen they keep in touch with until you arrive through text. Covid-19 restrictions are in place during operation. You must wear a mask, vaccinated or not. It wasn't as difficult as it might seem to ride a horse and wear a mask. At this time they do not have Group Rides unless you are 1 party (A party of 6 or more would be split in 2 groups). We originally were thinking of Rolling Stone Ranch but saw the bad reviews and decided to choose BH. I received a text about 40 minutes before arriving that they were running a little behind schedule and would be 15 minutes late. I thought that was nice to give us a head's up because we were able to take our time driving and even stop for a few minutes between destinations. Upon arriving in, the view was very nice. Approximately 15 minutes later, the group before arrived from their ride. Shortly after that we strapped on helmets and met with the owner, Elinor who showed us how to get on a horse and introduce us to our horses. She was extremely knowledgable, friendly and patient. She even took pictures of us so we didn't have to take our phones while riding. We took a nice trip around the tremendous fields where we could see other horses and an option to choose a more open space or to trek through the woods. We chose the woods. Fun and slow paced ride. If you wanted to trot, Elinor would make you aware of where you could do it best. We are looking forward to coming back in the winter and go for a ride in the beautiful snow. read more

We went for our second visit to Bridle Hill Farm last week (Friday after thanksgiving). Our first visit only a few months ago was enjoyable. We were only a party of 2 with the owner on the trail. By no means am I an expert horse rider but I've ridden over 25 times recreationally and always found it to be relaxing. I particularly enjoy cold weather riding with snow on the ground...it's beautiful. About halfway through the rmy horse decided HE (or she) was done. No steering would get this horse to cooperate with me. On five separate occasions the horse pinned my leg against different trees. The owners response was to laugh at me and talk in the most condescending way possible. I was prepared to walk back to the stable. I had to shout "I AM GOING TO GET HURT". The owners response was more laughter and an increase in her condescending demeanor. Oh and then she had the audacity to try and get me to put the horses away. read more

I rode at this place a couple of years ago. It stank. The ride was completely underwhelming, taking us through a portion of the farm itself and was completely not worth the time. I've had much better rides over the years even far closer to the New York metropolitan area. Also the people running this place were extremely rude. As a matter of fact, I reviewed this place a few years ago, and was so much bombarded by nasty emails from "customers" that I decided, what the hell, I'll delete my review. I also liked the work one of the owners did in the community. But I just got another nasty email from a "Victor" who I presume is the owner. Anyway, back it goes. Back to Yelp, and should not have been removed in the first place. I wish I could recommend a better place in the area, but I can't. If I find one, I'll post about it. Postscript: After reposting this review, a series of weird owner comments started appearing, one replacing the other. I think these say a lot about the kind of people who run this place. First came: "I do not see how you can have an opinion of how we run our facility when you possible visited 3 years ago." In fact, I posted my review originally right after the ride. Then they deleted all that and got conciliatory. Then they deleted all that and posted a bizarre rant accusing me of being a personal enemy of theirs up in the country. I saved it before they deleted it: "It is funny that you reposted your review a week after Marcie got caught stealing Bridle Hill Farm advertisement from pecks and teds. She has been posting many fake reviews for past 4 years. We have been under suspicion that you are Jason or another friend of Marcie." Fake reviews? Maybe she didn't notice, but I have 200 and counting, most not about businesses in the country.. Now they've deleted that rant and gone back to old-fashioned nastiness and personal attacks. Why do I think Victor is affiliated with Bridle Hill, E.Y.? Because he writes like you, said the same things you're saying and has no reviews - not even of your stable - that's how I know. As for rudeness, I think the tone of your response proves my point. Attacking customers for offering honest opinions shows how completely in denial these people are about how they treat their customers. Seriously, I wouldn't put my pet hamster on one of their horses, much less myself or a child. read more

We had a wonderful experience! We treated our granddaughter to her very first horseback riding lesson (1 hour). The care and safety (she had never ridden a horse!) set the family at ease. We had a terrific trail ride as absolute beginners. Elinor was incredibly helpful and the horses were gentle but also had vivid personalities. The ride was off-the-hook gorgeous around fields of wildflowers. Elinor also made this a pretty much 100% covid-safe activity as we were never within 10 feet of anyone except our own horse, masked the whole time, and hand washing provided before and after. We had a wonderful time riding here this weekend. As an inexperienced rider, I was a little nervous when we started, but with helpful instructions I soon felt very comfortable. The horses were beautiful and clearly well cared for, which is lovely to see. They take Covid precautions seriously which also made me feel comfortable. Our family has been regularly coming to Bridle Hill Farm for more than 5 years (we started in 2006). Positive: - Nice atmosphere. Pleasant people. Lessons (English saddle). Trails. Photos for facebook. Negative: - Far from New York (2 hr drive). No food or other facilities. They have bathroom and place to change, though. My wife and kids were taking regular lessons. We live in New York City and tried some other places which are closer, but we still prefer to drive two hours upstate to Bridle Hill Farm. My boyfriend and I decided to head up to Delaware county to hike mud pond/trout loop. We decided to make it a outdoor day and I wanted to go horseback riding. Naturally I looked on yelp and this place came up and it was on our way back to NYC. We showed up and Elinor was in her way out with her group and got her husband to help us. He was super friendly and gave us a mini-tour/history lesson about the property. When Elinor was ready for my boyfriend and I she did a great job of explaining what we should do in order to steer the horse. I had a great time over the Labor day weekend (2012). My family had an excellent trail ride. Bridle hill is super clean and super kudos for operating 100% Solar. I was very impressed with the patience of the trail leader with my sister and very close family friend that were... well, VERY nervous. They were very careful with our two youngest of the group (age 7). A total of four kids (oldest 13) and 5 adults, they all LOVED the experience. Bridle hill took the time to discuss "horse safety" and outfit our helmets. I will definitely take lessons there next time I come up from the city and will be bringing two of the kids along that are interested in the day program (which is great, no long term commitment for out of town'ers) . Oh how could I forget, during our trail ride we went through the forest and had the opportunity to see some deer -- pretty cool! read more

We love visiting bridle hill farm. Teddy is one of our favorite horses. We have been coming to the farm for past 5 years. Our children started out young and did the camp in the summer and pony rides. Its not your $10 pony ride. Elinor gives instruction and a full experience. Now they are riding on their own and it's a full lesson. The farm is beautiful and the horses are beyond well taken care of. We follow them on Facebook and instagram you can see how beautiful. No other horse farm offers what bridle hill farm does. We have also brought friends over when we have company for a trail. Megan and some of the other girls have been our trail guide. We always felt like family. read more

What can I say? Horses that can not walk and a owner/trainer who should be a lesson rider herself with no resume to support owning a farm. I ride often and have never met such a negative trainer, I tried speaking to her about taking lessons and she has an ego that does not match her lack of a resume. I was put on a horse who I thought was going to die. I went with several beginner riders and even they knew something wasn't right. One of my friends as on a pony who just kept coughing the entire time. Same as Humphrey stated, the trail ride was as if I was riding on the edge of my own property. No scenic view or real view at all. Also the facility was clean but maybe they should put that much attention towards their horses. We found it odd how many horses were limping. At the end it was creepy when an odd man who claimed to be the owner approached us. read more

We have been taking lessons there since 2009 as a family: 2 boys (ages 5 and 10) and 2 parents. None of us knew anything about horse back riding and we been did not know if we would like it when we started. Wow! Amazing. We are hooked. The boys have their preferred horses and can't wait to see them every week. I can now do jumps and cross-country. Lounge training on a few occasions has helped the boys build up their confidence and experience with their techniques. A few times a year we will do trails on Western saddles for the fun of it. We like the facilities: open, sunny, top of the hill (less muddy than facilities that would be lower). As parents, we needed to find a place that would understand our needs and where we would feel comfortable to send our kids. It is my experience that we all have different criteria for this and for us Bridle Hill was the right place. Go there at any time and I guarantee you will see other people hooked to this place and facility... But other people/family may have different criteria. I can also say that every time we have brought friends there they have all liked it. This place is what it is because Dan and Elinor, the owners are such passionate and inspiring people. They brought their vision to life and we like it. Their customers feel the same. Our weekend in Sullivan county would not be the same without Bridle Hill farm. read more

As a non-equestrian myself it is impossible for me to speak to the specifics of the riding instruction, but we can tell that Elinor is an enthusiastic teacher. read more

Summer camp for kids at Bridal Hill is a wonderful place! I could drop my eight year old off any weekday morning for a full horse farm experience; In addition to a small group riding lesson, my daughter got to learn about caring for all types of farm animals including every aspect of horse care. Learning about the barn and farm maintanence was a thrill for her amongst a fun group of kids. We visited many times over the course of last summer (2013) and always had a wonderful time! We will absolutely be back for the 2014 summer sessions. read more
