My wife and I purchased our house in Dana Pointe in 2012. The house had been vacant for over a year and the swimming pool was green and badly stained in a dark green color. We have wanted these stains removed since we moved in but were reluctant to have a company plaster the walls which is how we thought the stain removal would be done. Based upon recommendations from friends we called Curtis Nelson, the owner of Bright Blue Pools in Niceville, Florida. When Curtis arrived to give us a quote we were shocked to learn all that was possibly all that was needed was an acid wash of the walls and bottom. We were skeptical at first of Curtis's recommendation but with his 35 years in the pool business we agreed to have the pool acid washed. Curtis reassured us that the acid wash treatment would clear the stains and he was 100% right!!! Rarely does a business owner save you money with his recommendation. But this is what Curtis is about and how he operates, in every job opportunity. In our case, Curtis saved us over $10,000 by his honest assessment of the damage and by his desire to be truthful in our situation. He could have recommended a plaster redo of our walls but he didn't because he operates from a position of honesty. As knowledgeable of the pool business as Curtis is, his crew complements his work ethic by doing the required work to be done with professionalism and an extreme work ethic. We hired Curtis to replaster our pool without replacing our pool tile which was in excellent shape. He sold us on his charm and promises. Although, he said he would be on site everyday, we never saw him while the 2 workers were there. One of his guys started draining the pool and then left the property only to return the next day for a short time before having to depart for a school/divorce meeting. Curtis's son Brandon arrived next and immediately shared with our other fencing subs on the property that he wanted to get in and out so he could have a three day weekend. Brandon proceeded to go and start working on the pool where he immediately started breaking our stair tiles with the tool he was using to chip away the plaster. Appeared to me to be related to him rushing thru the work. When I came out, I saw red tape on a couple tiles. When I asked him about it, he did not say he broke the tile, but instead said it fell off and he glued it back on. The next day my husband saw that the tile along with several others were damaged by the tool he was using. He then owned up to the fact he broke it and tried to cover up what had happened. We then spent days trying to find a 20 year old stair tile or even something that matched. Nothing! We are now at 2+ weeks of a drained pool and no progress when it was sold as a 2 day turn around. Now Curtis was getting aggressive with us and playing the victim card. Not sure what we did here. We agreed to just bull nose the steps and leave them without tile and get finished. Another day of promises to get back to us when we reached out to him again. He now said he would only finish if we paid him in full prior. The deal he gave us was no payment until work is finished because everyone loves his work. Curtis showed up exactly when he said he would and in one day, they turned my swimming pool into an awesome blue pool and we can swim in it again without being embarassed about the pits that were in it before. They also cleaned up and it appears they were never here, except for proof of an awesome job! A trusted friend, businessperson and pool owner highly recommended Curtis Nelson and Bright Blue Pools when I inquired as to who had resurfaced his beautiful pool. After getting bids to resurface my pool I found that all bids were very close. I went with BB Pools. Curtis arrived at the time we had agreed on. His crew went to work like a well tuned machine. Each crew member had a job to do. While they were all very busy they were also very friendly and professional. There was no loud annoying music that is often heard on construction sites. They were kind enough to help me move some heavy items from my garage to the back yard. I am a senior with a bad back. After the job was well underway, Curtis informed me that he needed to look at another pool and submit a bid. He would be away for an hour or so. Before leaving he introduced me to one of his crew members and told me that if I had any questions or concerns I should speak to this person. Further, he gave me his cell # and told me to feel free to call him if anything came up that we could not resolve. Nothing came up at all. Same well tuned machine. The company policy is that that I would pay him nothing until the job was complete and I was totally satisfied. By mid afternoon the job was complete. The pool area was cleaned up and beautiful !! I would not recommend using this company. We have had nothing but problems with the surface since they refinished it. We also have had conversations with other Bright Blue Customers who have had quality issues as well. The owner has been very unprofessional handling our situation and is refusing to help. The grout is cracking between the tiles on the waterfall which has created leaking along with cracks on the inside of the wall and pitting. Horrible! Contracted with Bright Blue to do replastering using pebble (exposed aggregate) finish. The resulting work is very patchy with the cement covering multiple large areas of the aggregate giving it the appearance of an old pool that needs replastering... not uniform at all and very ugly. After the work as the pool was being filled and Curtis was asking to be paid, he told me that the residue would brush right off after a couple of days under water. He sent someone out to brush, but it did not come off. His employee ended up leaving the property with a hose running for 4 days (i was out of town). i did not know until the water company called alerting me of excessive usage. After more prodding, they came back and drained the pool again ($$$) and did another acid wash and brushing. Also, prior to Bright Blue's plastering, my pool never leaked a drop. Now it leaks about 4" in a week. After dozens of unanswered calls and messages, i got my fiance to call on her phone... amazingly Curtis answered. Startled, he agreed to come out and see what he could do. He did send someone out, but no results. The pool still looks like crap, still leaks and Curtis again won't respond to calls or texts. This was a $20,000 replaster job, and it's a small pool, and it still looks like crap. Don't be fooled by this company it's Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde after he gets paid! read more

We moved here to Niceville last year into a home with a pool. The owner came out to give us a check on the pool and made recommendations. He put us at ease about the unknown regarding our new experience as pool owners and so we hired him to do the work recommended. This year we replaced the decking around our pool and had him return to see if there were any issues with pool in regards to it being a gunite yet it sits on a slope with a lot of the pool secured by support while some underground. The owner once again gave us recommendations which made sense. I would totally ask this company back for any more pool upgrades or repairs. I never once felt pressured. The owner gives complete recommendations for either the simplest way to go or the price for a full upgrade and allows the home owner the opportunity to weigh what is important for their own experience and outcome. - Sharie read more

The challenge with rating this company, run by Curtis, is the work looked good, but service after the work was done is non-existent. I spent $12k with this company on two.pools. After the work was done, both pools leaked and required me to hire a leak detection company to the tune of $400 each pool. I tried to get Curtis to fix it, as it was due to his work. He finally responded after several attempts to reach him. Sent his guy Hans to check it out and discovered no problem. The pool was leaking water and my leaknguy found it. The second attempt to talk with Curtis was regarding a auto fill port I had asked to be installed during the resurfacing. After several tried, I got a bullshit text about the autofill port which turned out to be a lie as my other leak detection company informed me it was for a pool sweep! The bottom line, is beware of working with this company. Curtis will sell you on his service and his warranty, but when it comes to after service response, the guy is dead in the water. Sad really, because I would have given him a high rating for the work that was done until I found out the poor quality after the fact and the fact that he wouldn't respond dealing with it. read more
