HPL isn't the only notable internment...there are many scientists, authors, congressmen and even several Civil War Veterans also! Not to mention the fall foliage and utterly peaceful tranquility of the entire place! The entrance is a little hidden....it's at the end of a long stone wall with several other closed entrances, so it almost fools you into thinking it's closed. If you're looking for HPL's grave, the family plot is at the intersection of Pond Avenue and Avenue B and very easy to find. The website has an interactive map that is somewhat helpful, except that it gets blurry when you try to zoom in - but good enough to figure it out.

I would caution you not to go outside the lines with the short-tempered and stressed out owner William Watson, because you don't know what will set him off. I contacted him to verify a burial of a family member whom I know was served there. Typically, if the deceased is someone whom they have previously served most mortuaries will cooperate with you to verify what is public information on death records and obituaries. Not Mr. Watson. He was uptight when I called the first time, the next, even worse, refusing to work with me. When I disconnected the call, he called back immediately to chew me out on a voice message. After all, I wasn't bringing him any new business! We all know that attitude is poor public relations and will do nothing for business. Many of the mortuaries in Rhode Island are family-owned for decades, like Skeffington, and the principles there are aging and rigid. You have many other good choices. Go somewhere else!

I was recently notified what they did to a family member, so I looked things over. I thought this place was great, UNTIL I realized they charged us for things not legal, not purchased, and not disclosed! I called the crematory, medical examiners in 2 different states, and the insurance company. They informed me of the REAL prices, the LAW, and how Dyer-Lake used our money to fund their own interests without disclosing it. It wasn't theirs to use! To this date, they have refunded 4 checks, admitting guilt, returning (dragging it out slowly) almost what they owed us, but not fully. They refuse to refund us for merchandise we never bought. They refuse to itemize the bill. They refuse to tell us what "basic professional services" cover, since we never had a "service", and so many other fees were charged on top of basic...things like transportation, storage, paperwork, drivers, removal of pacemaker, ect. They charged us for 2 medical examiners in 2 different states. One owner said it was the LAW because the person died in one state and was buried in another. The other owner said that was a mistake. BUT they did it twice! 16 months apart! Once, it "might" be a mistake, but twice is how they run their business until you catch them. I could describe each thing, but the checks are proof enough.. BE WARY and do your homework! A smile, a hug, and making you feel like and old friend means nothing when you find out the truth. Its disgusting and deceitful to do this. Its been SIX MONTHS and they still owe us for one more thing.

I buried my father, mother, and nephew though Winfield & Sons Funeral Home. Nicole was the funeral…read moredirector for both my mom and my nephew. She did an amazing job with both, so when my mother-in-law was placed on hospice in March, we called and asked specifically for her. From start to finish, Nicole began taking care of business and always made herself available, even on her days off. We wanted to place the obituary in the local paper, but it needed to be in quickly. My husbands aunt and I were trying to write it together by collaborating over the phone as we live in different states. We needed to make the deadline by 12:00 pm and we just made it but since we rushed there were many error's that we noticed after. I frantically got ahold of Nicole and without missing a beat she corrected the article right in time for the printed version. We were originally told that they couldn't guarantee an open casket, as we were waiting 2 weeks after she passed to have the funeral so that my son could come home on military leave for it. But Nicole made it happen. She even touched up my mother in laws regrowth, and colored her brown roots to blond. The services went very smoothly and Nicole organized the whole event with ease. Our family and friends were very pleased with the results. I realize that writing a review for a funeral director is not as glamorized as a review for a vacation, but it is something that all of us will have to face someday for not only ourselves but the loved ones on our life. I had a negative experience when we buried my father in law, with another funeral company. I can only say that this experience is etched in my memory that even exceeds the loss of my father in law. Having a kind, patient, caring, thoughtful person taking care of everything after your loved one has passed makes the experience much more bareable. Paul Sheridan showed a lot of compassion, guided us through the myriad choices, and then took on as much of the detail work as he could. At one point, he showed a lot of integrity by pointing out a mistake I was about to make. Eventually he convinced me. He turned out to be right. I appreciate now that he didn't follow the maxim that "the customer is always right". Grief does funny things to your head and he knew it. Months after the ceremony we brought my parents' ashes to the Veterans Cemetary. Paul insisted on handling the arrangements and stayed through the entire ceremony. We appreciate that he and his staff made a horrible time much easier to bear. (I realize that it took 3 years to write this review, but I'm finally able to do so without the memories coming back.)
