I cannot say enough good things about this shop and owner, Elize Nazelie. I emailed Elize back in 2015 inquiring about a half sleeve, which would soon turn into a full sleeve. She responded rather quickly (for a busy shop owner) - I sent her reference photos, and we then made an appointment for a consultation. The consultation was about 20 min and she drew on my arm detailing exactly what she would be doing and then traced that. No question was left unanswered. I then had multiple two hour sessions which I wasn't used to in my previous longer tattoo sessions, which was great. Elize always made sure I was comfortable, played awesome music, and always checked in on me to see if I was hanging in. Best tattoo experiences I've ever had, hands down. I love Elize!!! I took a long time planning my first tattoo and who I wanted my artist to be. I must have searched through several thousand tattoo artists online and many, many more pictures of tattoos to find my artist. While there are many talented artists in my home state of Maine I knew that it was worth the multiple trips down to Massachusetts to get a tattoo from Elize at Brilliance Tattoo. Her style is so unique and I really love the care and attention to detail she puts in to each piece. She is a true artist which is clear from looking at her one of a kind tattoos. I wanted to have full trust in my artist because getting something permanently marked on my skin was a really big deal. I knew after looking at all of Elize's tattoo pictures (her website, facebook, and various other websites online) that I would for sure love anything that she put on my body. I was really, really excited when she emailed me back and agreed to take on my piece. I was so happy that she was also willing to work with me to make sure my whole tattoo process was vegan (considering her shop is not vegan but she does use vegan ink-yay!) She was super amazing letting me bring my own stencil paper, soap, and all that jazz. She agreed to send me a picture of my tattoo prior to coming down to Boston since I was out of state. I was totally floored when I saw it. Everything that I had wanted Elize knew and made it into the perfect tattoo. I felt like she was hiding somewhere in my noggin when I dreamt up my perfect tattoo. Her shop is lovely. I really like that she has her own space to tattoo in which really helped me feel comfortable. It is clean and bright in her shop with cute artworks of her kitties, and a wall of her beautiful stencils. Elize is not only a talented artist and amazing tattooer, but she is a genuinely awesome person. I felt totally comfortable during the whole process. I'm so glad I decided to start talking during our second session and get to know her a little bit. I got a tattoo at Brilliance the other day, and even though I love my tattoo, I have mixed reviews about the place. When I got there, they were friendly and accommodating but not super personable. I have three other tattoos from other shops and all the staff at those places were very personable. As a tattoo artist or staff member, I think you need to be. You're about to permanently scar someone's skin. Elise (my artist) was super nice and talented and personable, but the other staff wasn't so much. But here's the biggest reason for the three stars-- my tattoo, which is fairly small (probably the length of a post-it) was super overpriced! My other tattoos are triple its size and fifty times more intricate, and each of them were $160. This one was $140. It only has four colors and took 20 minutes and my other ones have at least 5 colors (one has 13) and each took at least an hour. It is great work, but too expensive. I probably won't go back because of the price, to be honest. I don't mind the cost for hard work, but this one was pretty simple and should not have costed more than $100. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I've only ever been tattooed by Hannah, but I've heard nothing but incredible things about all the ladies at Brilliance. I've been tattooed by Hannah three times in the past year so I think that speaks to how happy I am with the work I've gotten. I LOVE coming to this shop. It's clean, pleasant, and it's nice to be in an environment where you don't feel kind of weirded out as a woman (those places exist, I got tattooed at one once, never again). The set-up here is super professional. I already had previous tattoos, but I think this would be a great place for a first timer to come because they will make sure you don't leave before you know exactly how to care for your new art. They also offer free touch ups if something does need to be redone after healing (not a sign of poor skill - fine lines, which this shop does a lot of, often heal weirdly and it's GREAT that they touch up for free). Finally, Hannah is great. She only finished her apprenticeship about a year ago and she's already incredibly skilled, and also great at making clients feel at home while she's working. I could not possibly reccomend her more as an artist - but be prepared to book a few months out. She's incredibly busy, and for good reason! read more

Came here for my first tattoo! I figure that if a store has a 5 Star rating, there's a reason why. I visited Brilliance Tattoo during their walk-in visits on Saturdays from 11am-7pm. I called in the morning around 11am to inquire about the size I was looking for some script on my arm (approximately 1"x6"). On their website it states that they do less than 4"x4" so I just wanted to clarify and they did take my size in. Upon arriving (around 3:30pm), the place was already packed with about 4 groups before me. However, there were enough staff to accommodate to the walk-ins that I was helped almost immediately. **Tip: I brought in hard copies of pictures as to what I wanted. Since I was doing a phrase, I brought it in several fonts that I was attracted to, as well as a placement image for the tattoo artist to understand what I had in mind ^ This really benefitted me and moved my process along a little quicker as it avoided having to sit and talk with a consultant for too long. One of the guys, Brendan, was straightforward but slightly bias as to what I should select for my tattoo. I felt like he was encouraging to take my tattoo in a different direction, while offering advise on the choice of font I was looking for. (I really wanted to take my Yelp rating down to 4 stars because of this but I didn't want to hinder the reliable and accurate rating of Brilliance being a 5 star entity.) Nonetheless, I controlled the situation and eventually selected a different font that I found on dafont.com on their computer (so cool that they let you browse through their font library!). Following that, my appointment was at 5:30pm so I came back since there was so much time to kill. I came back around 5:25pm and Elize my tattoo artist was already waiting for me! I guess next time, arrive at least 15 minutes earlier so you can just go right in if the artist is ready for you. I was hoping I would get Elize because of the reviews on Yelp and being an artist myself, I wanted an tattoo artist who was skilled in lines quality. Elize made my process a lot comforting, professional, and smooth. I told her it was my first time and she took the time to explain everything very clearly and cohesively. We started with a small line which I thought was painful and within 20 minutes we were done! Make sure you bring a friend or a boyfriend or even a stressball because you will need to relieve the pain somehow! Even if you're immune to pain, it's just nice having someone there for you. I am so glad I made the decision to take my first tattoo to Brilliance and I will be back! (maybe not for another year....) read more

Very impressed with this place! I came here for my 5th tattoo...this time was a smaller one, script on my inner upper arm, and knew it could be handled with a walk in. I requested Elize, based on her past reviews and work. The man at the front desk took about 20 minutes to work with me to tweak my idea to fit the space I wanted. He gave me an estimation of time to come back, which Elize was pretty spot on from that. I like that they did the estimation, as other places will just have you wait there. Elize was very friendly, very organized, and was patient in letting me change the placement several times until I felt it was perfect. She even charged less than I guessed she would. My friend and I randomly found this place when we were looking to get a couple of quick tattoos done. The girl who was working was super nice and offered to take us right then and there with no appointment. Every other shop was rude to us and wanted to charge $80+ for a tattoo the size of my thumbnail (mind you it's just an outline). The only complaint I have is that one part of my tattoo got a teeny bit blown out and I really need it touched up :( Would definitely go back though!! read more

Another well deserved 5 star review for Brilliance Tattoo. Years ago when I got my first tattoo it was a piece of flash art off a tattoo shop wall. It took 5 minutes and my artist was a bit of a dick. So when it came time for me to get my first "big girl" ink, you'd better bet I did my homework. This time I wanted a lotus design on my shoulder. I went and looked at some of the most well regarded tattoo shops in the area. They ranged from, "nice and helpful but didn't quite get what I was looking for artistically", to "dickheads who acted like they were doing me a favor by letting me set foot in their shop." I walked out of the latter shop after the guy spent our entire conversation quizzing me about if I had any other tattoos, bemoaning how 'mainstream' tattooing has become and telling me that, 'if all I wanted was a flower, anybody in the shop could do it.' After my first tattoo experience it was important to me that I liked the person who was going to spend three hours sticking a needle in me. It was also important that the artist cared about the design of the tattoo as much as I did. With tattooing being such a boy's club, I also really wanted my artist to be female. It started to look like I wasn't going to find that perfect artistic trifecta--- until a friend recommended Brilliance Tattoo. From my very first email exchange with Abby I could tell she was going to be, "the one". She told me she loved tattooing flowers and asked me to send her my pinterest inspiration board. From that and a few conversations we had, she was able to put together a design that completely expressed what I was looking for! She and I were totally speaking the same artistic language, it was like magic! Where I had struggled to explain my ideas to other artists who just wanted to transform my idea into a piece of flash that they had already done, Abby was intent on creating something unique that I was completely pleased with. From our first email interaction to our final touch ups she was totally welcoming and accommodating. I had just as pleasant an experience with the rest of the staff at the shop. Brilliance Tattoo is just a very special place.They were friendly and positive, not an ounce of attitude or judgement to be found. You can tell they really care about their clients and enjoy interacting with them. When I walked in for my final touch up after not having been there for months, their male tattoo artist, who hasn't even worked on me greeted me by saying, "Hi! You're the one with the lotus on your shoulder!" Brilliance is different than every other tattoo shop I've ever been to. Because I had such a positive experience there I know I will be getting more ink at some point and I know exactly where I'll be headed back to. I had such a wonderful experience getting tattooed by Elize! I have been admiring all of the artists at Brilliance, but Elize's work especially resonates with me. I created and emailed to Elize some visual references of what I wanted; she eventually wrote back and said she was willing to take on my project! During our consultation, Elize totally understood what I was looking for and had great aesthetic ideas about contextualizing the design with my existing tattoo. We scheduled the tattoo appointment and Elize explained that if doing 1 long session turned out to be too painful for me, I could always decide to stop and finish later in a 2nd shorter session. During the actual tattooing, Elize worked with me to make sure the placement of each part was perfect. The space at her shop is so relaxing, with gorgeous plants and soothing natural lighting among the neutral white but unique decor - it was really nice to admire her wall of stencils while getting my tattoo done. Throughout the process, Elize checked how I was doing in terms of pain. Although it hurt at parts, Elize's professionalism and non-intimidating ambiance was very helpful (in addition to being a female tattooer working on a more intimate region!). My first time meeting Elize was after I had received a tattoo of my dog's paw from another shop that ended up like a bruised mushroom. Honestly I didn't think much could be done with it other than to serve as a warning to other but my underestimation of Elize's skills were squashed forever when she transformed this horrid wreck of a tattoo into something I truly cherish. I found my forever tattoo artist here and I love it. Before I found Abby and Brilliance Tattoo, I shopped around 3 other places for about 6 months (not including the 6 years of on-again-off-again contemplation of getting a tattoo). I will admit that I needed a lot of guidance on the direction and style of my tattoo, but no other place seemed to click for me. With Abby, however, I havent been made to feel like a useless tattoo novice. Abby is awesomely creative as well as pragmatic. I have been tattooed twice before coming to Brilliance, and I can honestly say that my experience with Amanda has been the most enjoyable of the three. I would go back once a month if I had the funds. Although I've been tattooed before, I'm by no means a veteran. I have a few small pieces and a handful of piercings. Everyone I interacted with in the shop was incredibly friendly and welcoming (this is something I didn't experience when I was last tattooed in Los Angeles). I initially emailed Amanda with an idea and came in for a consultation where we chatted about design and placement. When I returned for my first session and she showed me the stencil she drew up I was amazed because it was exactly what I envisioned but didn't feel like I was able to necessary convey in words. The line work came out great and healed up very well. I returned to get my color today and I'm so thrilled with the result. The entire experience was so positive for me and worth every penny. I was able to walk into Brilliance and be under the needle un under 15 minutes. Brilliance's Saturday small-piece walk in was the best value for a tat I've gotten - $100 total, including tip! I thought about giving them 4 stars because there was a communication error between the receptionist (she was an artist in training, so I think she might have been a little distracted) and my artist, in which my artist started on a tattoo with the wrong color. It was fine, though, and they were really apologetic and understanding. I had an overall otherwise great experience so 5 stars is what they get! read more

Ahgad, I'm 5 of 6 (or so) sessions into my half-sleeve, and I loooooooooove everything about it. Brilliance only takes on the best artists, the shop is spotless, and their system (in my mind) is waaaaay easier to work with than any other shop out there. If you are a Yelper, looking at Brilliance, and want something done here-- send your artist of choice an email, don't just show up at the shop. They are only open by appointment, so you will travel to an empty shop if you don't set up something in advance (unless you come in on "Walk In" Saturday). Just an fyi. read more

Elize is Amazing! I decided to get my first tattoo and shopped all around until I found Brilliance Tattoo. The place is CLEAN, organized, and the artists were great. I was super nervous and had a million questions and she promptly and thoroughly answered every email, no matter how silly the question (she didn't even make it sound like my questions were silly). She was very assuring, professional, knowledgeable and it made the process smooth. I got a Tortoise and Hare tattoo on my ankle/foot, and the pain wasn't even that bad. There was virtually no swelling or bleeding either. She used new needles and sterilized equipment and changed gloves after answering phones and things. Visited Boston for a weekend and during the trip planning stages, I was looking into getting a tattoo in Boston just so I can add it to the list of places that I've gotten a tattoo from. Best of all, Saturdays was a day where you could just walk in with a small tattoo and get it done the same day, perfect for me as I wanted to get a bunch of Chinese characters tattooed on my arm. The day came and I had gone elsewhere before going to get my tattoo. When I walked in, I was greeted by some guy who was all friendly and laid back. I told him that I wanted to get some Chinese characters tattooed and he was like no problem, give me a second then he came back with Elize. I told Elize what I wanted to do, showed her both the design and where I wanted to get it done, she told me that it wouldn't be a problem, the design would just need to be modified and I was told the cost of the tattoo, which was a lot better than I thought. A few minutes later, I was all set, I guess I was fortunate enough to be here on a day when there weren't a lot of people around, I think there was another person getting a tattoo but that was it. Since I already have a whole bunch of tattoos, I already knew what to expect. Elize was nice throughout and able to put someone at ease when they're getting a tattoo (for all those who are on the fence about getting a tattoo). I really liked what I got done and next time I'm in Boston, depending on how many tattoos I get between now and then, I will most likely go back for another tattoo. read more

I got my tattoo from Amanda, and I do not think I could be more pleased with the results. If you're getting a tattoo, I highly suggest taking a look at the portfolio's of several artists. You can usually find these on the website of the tattoo shop, instagram, etc. Everyone's preferences are different, and Amanda's floral work was exactly what I looking for. Besides my personal preference, Amanda was great to work with, and the lines and shading on my tattoo are on point. Could not recommend her more highly. First tattoo, awesome experience! I went in during Saturday walk in hours to get a small tattoo on my left-side chest. This being my first time getting tattooed, I was pretty nervous. As soon as I walked in, I was immediately greeted and started figuring out my tattoo. Having brought a picture for reference and an idea of the font type I wanted for the text associated, the staff had a perfect design very quickly! Not 15 minutes later, artist Amanda took me into her studio area to get to work. Explaining that I was a first-timer to the whole tattoo thing she was extremely easygoing and very thorough with her explanations of everything that was going on. After a quick burst from the needle to give me a discomfort preview/reference point, the tattoo was underway. Not too long after, we were done wrapped up, and gearing up to leave! She explained the healing process perfectly, provided advice for products, answered questions, and opened up her e-mail account to me for anything lingering. After a few weeks, I returned to get some of the more solid parts touched up (I'm a super white guy and it was starting to show through a bit!) and Amanda was prompt to respond to my e-mail, even taking me on short notice. All in all, outstanding experience. I never had any concerns about the places sanitation or quality and I could not be more pleased with my tattoo. I cannot say enough amazing things about Hannah. My whole experience from the consultation to the actual appointment was flawless. She was super communicative and seemed to dig my idea for my next tattoo. I had to reschedule my original appointment, but she was gracious and was able to set up an evening appointment for me (stupid 9-5 job). It had been a few years since I got my last tattoo, and Hannah eased me right into it. The shop is bright and welcoming - I love the wrought-iron furniture pieces and the window of plants! - and the staff is just as welcoming, too. Hannah was finishing up a consultation when I arrived, but was sure to say hi when I walked in. After the consultation left, she went over her design and we discussed the color scheme. She listened to my concerns and came up with an beautiful color palate. The whole process took a little less than 3hrs, and I couldn't be happier with the final result. I've been showing it off at every chance I get b/c of how gorgeous it is... the saturation and shading are perfect, and her line work is top-notch. Similar to other commenters before me, I had my first tattoo experience at Brilliance, and it was awesome! I got a somewhat small tattoo which included 6 simple numbers on the inside of my right foot in black ink, and I don't think the actual tattooing took more than 15 minutes. I went in on a walk-in day, and make sure you're not a tight schedule that day, because you might have to wait an hour or so for your allotted turn (but there's a great coffee shop right next door). The place is incredibly clean, and they're all very nice and knowledgable with their field; I trusted my tattoo artist to free hand the numbers, and she basically read my mind (I believe her name was a Eliza? I could be wrong). Pricing was definitely worth it, I think the minimum is $60 and I gave a $20 tip because the artist was so nice and understanding! Loved this place, and they were even accommodating to the 5 ( I know) other friends I had with me. read more

Working with Abby has been great. I have worked with several tattoo artists and she is by far my best experience: Professional, friendly, and most importantly--an extremely talented artist. I was looking to get two larger sizes tattoos on my legs and brought her a series of images of what I was looking for and she came up with something better then I could have imagined. She was happy to collaborate and shared a range of detailed sketches. But, beyond being willing to work with you, she is passionate about what she does and just as excited to do my tattoo as I was. This was something that I found lacking in other Boston tattoo shops. Everyone in the shop is great and I have recognized a shared passion in overhearing other consultations. The shop is in an easy location and clean, bright and comfortable. I would highly recommend Abby and Brilliance to anyone looking for a one of a kind piece. You can't go wrong with any of the tattooers at this shop. I discovered Brilliance at the Tattoo Convention, and have since only had work done by Amanda, a small piece, to see if I liked the art, the prices and if it was a good all around fit. I came across Elize a few years ago at a shop close to my home. I had a bunch of bad tattoo's on my back and honestly didn't think much could be done. Elize designed, from scratch a complete back piece that would cover 3 Celtic knots and a tribal dragon. . . yes, 3 Celtic knots! What was I thinking?! My back came out beyond perfect. For a cover-up its bright and full of life! After spending all those sessions with her, I was so happy to see she opened her own shop. I popped in last month to work on my new piece, a full sleeve. I was so pleased with my back that I let her have creative freedom with it, and the design she came up with I just love. The shop itself is cute! A little out of the way for me living outside of Boston, but uber easy to get to by train. Basically get off the train at Pleasant St, cross, and you are there. I also love that there's an ATM right in the same hallway because I'm terrible and never carry cash. Elize is an amazing tattoo artist and the shop is clean, easy to get to, and cute! I got a tattoo yesterday from Brilliance. It was my third tatt, but the first I'd added in almost 20 years. I went to Brilliance Tattoo to get my very first tattoo a few days ago, and I couldn't have been happier with the experience. I had been considering this tattoo for over a year and I wanted to have it done at a place that wasn't intimidating to walk into and that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg for such a simple request (one Greek word on my wrist). This place had everything I wanted. The environment was welcoming and calming, the people were friendly and helpful, and my walk-in tattoo was $60 (not counting the tip that I gave Elize, which she definitely deserved). At this point I'm not planning on any more tattoos, but if I were, I'd want to come back. If you are looking for an approachable environment (especially for your first tattoo), I'd definitely recommend Brilliance Tattoo. read more

Well-- this place clearly doesn't need another 5 star review for you to understand that it is great but what the hell. The entire experience with Brilliance and Amanda specifically was great. Amanda is fucking amazing. I've had work done at both Pino and Fat Ram's and love the work those guys did but doesn't compare to Amanda. Clean lines. Great shading. She's a hot shit. Took a while to find her after she left Empire but glad I waited. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Elize and her artistry. Forget 5 stars, I give 11! I received an original, beautiful drawing that was even better than my original vision for my tattoo. Her use of color and shading is so amazing that I was in awe and continue to get asked "wow! where did you get that tattoo!?" If you want a tattoo, you can go anywhere.
