What should have been a really smooth transaction became squabbling over like 19 dollars. I'll try…read moreand tell the short version of this story: I asked about a used Yamaha acoustic just to have an extra guitar to leave at my parents house. They had an early 80's entry level Yamaha priced at $350 which felt high, so I left and did some research at home. Sure enough, they go for between $200 and $280 dollars (Yamaha FG-331). Sure, I'll pay an extra $50-$80 to get a guitar I can actually play and check out... but I'm not paying $350 for a $200 guitar. I let them know the research I did and what the guitar generally goes for. And the guy just said, "ummm, ya. uhhhh that's just the price". Finally I had to ask who could decide if there's a give on price. "uhhhh, I mean, I guess the owner could". Instead of him volunteering to call him, I had to ask if he could call him. He did. I asked if they could come down to $320 cash... because I was by this time sick of all the back and forth even though $320 was WAY more than I should have paid for this. The owner on the phone agreed to $320 cash. Wow, 30 dollar discount. Then the guy rings me up for $339 dollars... like what? It's $320 cash. Meaning I hand you $320 which is already way more than this guitar is worth, and you hand me the guitar. I questioned him about it, and it was just like, "no, man... my boss would never go for that, we have to charge sales tax". Well, you could just call him to ask if that's what he meant. Sorry for the long and complainy review. But Traverse is a smaller town, and it's often hard to find something just right. After looking for a week, this guitar seemed to be the perfect fit. But the deal didn't happen over 19 freaking dollars. I was already willing to pay way more than the guitar was worth. I even showed the guy 8 different listings online that I had emailed myself. And the owner agreed to $320 cash. Don't buy anything from these guys without looking up the price. Or don't buy in general. Go on craigslist or marketplace.

I've never seen worse service or had a worse consumer experience. Please, read to the end of this…read morereview before you waste money here. I was on vacation in Door County the week before my daughter's seating audition with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. Her A string was fraying and close to breaking, making practicing impossible. We were relieved to find that this store carried violin strings. We drove the half-hour from Egg Harbor, purchased the last set of violin strings (Prelude D'Addario strings, medium tension, 4/4, for $34.91--the same strings are $16.99 on amazon.com). We were grateful when the store's owner offered to replace the A string himself. (My daughter's teacher had replaced her strings in the past.) We waited for over half an hour with the store owner in the back with my daughter's violin--a long time to replace a string, but we were so grateful to have this crisis averted that we didn't question it. It wasn't until we were back in Egg Harbor (total time investment: 1.5 hours driving and waiting) that we realized something was wrong. The string was tuned to an A, but it was the A a full octave below where the A string on a violin should be. My daughter tried to tune it properly, and the string snapped. On closer inspection, she realized the A string was still in the package. Looking at the color coding on the package and the strings, we realized the owner of the music store had put the D string on the violin. The string he put on the violin had a yellow binding, meaning it was a D string according to the package. The A string has a black binding. My daughter, with online instructions and her violin teacher's help, put the correct string, the A string, on her violin. Ideally, when replacing one string, you replace all four strings at the same time. That was our intent in purchasing the set of four strings from Door County Music Co. The A string replacement was a quick fix, and our plan was, after vacation, to replace the rest of the strings with the set we had purchased. With the D string broken due to the store owner's mistake, we now have to purchase a new set of strings. We called the owner of Door County Music Co., described the problem, and requested a refund since we had purchased a full set, and because of his mistake, we did not have a full set of strings. Instead of apologizing and finding a solution, he was confrontational and belligerent. He had me repeat the problem several times, and seemed unfamiliar with the color coding used by Prelude and unable to grasp the problem I was describing. When he finally seemed to understand the situation, he told me new strings would be in his store tomorrow (after our vacation, when we would be back home). He then angrily said he couldn't possibly have made the error. ("I've been doing this for 16 years! I wouldn't have done something like that!") I calmly repeated the fact that the D string was used to replace the A string. He said, "There's no way I made that mistake. You just have to come to the store and show me. I'm here until 5:30." We ended our vacation plans hours early so that we could reach his store in time to talk to him in person, with the violin. We were there at 4:22 pm, and found his store locked and closed, in spite of the posted sign (and his earlier statement) saying closing time was 5:30 on Thursdays. Now we are stuck having paid double the normal price for a set of violin strings, strings ruined by this rude, apparently ignorant store owner who refuses to give us the refund we deserve. We all make mistakes. I would've hoped a store owner would be reasonable enough when faced with a mistake he'd made to refund the money for strings he himself ruined. This man should not be running a store. I only wish I'd read the store's online reviews before we wasted so much time driving to and from his store. I write all of this in hopes of saving at least one person from the same error.

If you are a serious musician who wants to support a local business don't even bother. Depending on…read morehow long you've been in the industry entering this store will give you PTSD flashbacks. I honestly think the last used car salesman I spoke to was a more honest person than the owner of Door County Music Company. The following are the red flags for why you should not expect anything other than an older man who's wife is paying the bills for his hobby of being a "business owner". 1. Don't mention the website doesn't work. He will tell you he has the biggest website with anything you could want to buy. The URL is not properly set up with GoDaddy, and he only has a Facebook page that is never updated. 2. He will tell you he has too many things in stock to display all at once. He will require a deposit to "bring something down". This is a bold lie and he has no inventory and would be ordering it on the spot from Harris Teller. Expect a long wait for something you could get next day for half the price from Amazon. 3. He will brag about having access to the "best and largest distributor out of Chicago". Its just Harris Teller. Anyone can order from them and get the same discounted prices he buys from. Also he places orders by phone with a paper catalog like it's 1997. Again ptsd flashbacks from 90's mom and pop music stores that only carry the most bottom of the barrel Chinese made junk. He says he can order anything, but the guy doesn't even have access to the cheapest Fender guitar made in Indonesia. In short, this store offers nothing outside of revenue for the owners of the building it resides in. I really hope he steps out of the role he is in and hires someone to take over the whole operation. If you've seen any episodes of Kitchen Nightmares or Hotel Hell you know what I'm talking about. It's not the economy...

They have some serious instruments: for instance, I saw hammer Ed dulcimer in the store, and a dulcimer of any type is not an instrument you'll see everywhere. They also had guitars for adults, as well as some child size guitars, violins, some little fun instruments like kazoo and slide whistles and maracas and what not wind chimes. The wind chimes were tuned beautifully; I'm still deciding whether I want to buy one as I write this review. Prices weren't bad, perfectly reasonable for a shop like this in a tourist area. Parking is shared with all of the shops along the strip of Fish Creek so you'll find it on the street or wherever you find it. Accessible parking doesn't really exist.
