This girl here does not like mustard- and I usually snag two containers of that magic stuff. They have their own regular and spicy bbq sauce. I loved the spicy bbq sauce, it wasn't too sweet and had a nice kick to it. The coleslaw was not mayo based but still really good. The jalapeño cornbread was next to my coleslaw and absorbed the juice from it so the taste was a little off. I should have asked for it on the side. Midweek lunch visit. Busy but not crowded. Service was good, two of us and we were hanging out. Onion straw app was ok.. it's like a blooming onion's leftovers. Not exactly crispy but still good. Wings with the Blue Fire sauce were fantastic.. done perfectly. Sauce is rich and sweet and mildly hot. Ribs were exceptional, and I only like my own. Meaty and smoky and done right, falling off the bone but not cooked to oblivion. Now.. the coleslaw. I swear my grandma is in the kitchen with her glass vinegar bottle. Ribs here are decent. They come to the table smoked and you add barbecue sauce at the table. The most popular sauce is their sweet honey barbecue sauce. This visit the ribs seemed a bit dry. My husband and I have been here 3 times in the last 30 days, trying all items on the menu!! We drive about 35 minutes to get here. This is hands down our new favorite bbq spot. First thing that hits you is the beautifully modern yet rustic atmosphere. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. But then...the food! Outstanding brisket! This cozy place surprised me! The exterior was lovely with a nice view of the bridge and lots of umbrella seating to choose from. The beef brisket was amazing. Our two person lunch was very quiet because we were too busy eating!! The service was fast and friendly. It seemed as though it took 5 minutes to get two platters of food! Amazing. Cool spot with good food! There's even a pretty nice view from the upstairs bar area. I came here with my boyfriend while on a weekend getaway. We were seated right away and our waitress was super friendly and attentive. We started out with the Buffalo chicken dip and it was delicious. I highly recommend it. We both ordered wings, I went with the bbq and Cajun. They tasted good and were seasoned just right. I was disappointed in the potato salad but the beans and cornbread were pretty good. My boyfriend enjoyed his food as well. He was totally into the craft beer selection. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. Great spot for a casual date night. read more

Soooo delicious! Got takeout: brisket sandwich with Mac and cheese and also pub fries. Both my husband and I loved everything, especially the brisket. They have a few sauces you can get on the side. I liked the sweet and tangy the best. I also appreciated the attentiveness of the bartending staff. We don't eat indoors because I teach high-risk students (not that I would want to get Covid myself), but the patio seems nice and spaced out. I might come back and eat outside when it's not raining. My husband ate the brisket and it was so good he said we need to learn how to make a good brisket! read more

Once upon a drive to Erie my colleague and I stopped here for dinner on a Sunday afternoon. We heard Ashtabula had good barbecue so we decided to stop and give it a try. Upon entry we were directed to the second floor for seating in an open space with tables and a bar. There were about 4 other tables dining and a few people at the bar. We sat at a two seater and opted to try the Big Nasty combo which included chicken thighs, pulled pork, chicken wings, ribs, brisket and 3 sides. The large tray came out and we were astounded at the feast. We hit up the sauce station and got to business. The chicken wings and ribs were delicious, brisket and chicken though was good and I didn't think we got an accurate portion of pulled pork. The sauces added a little pop to the already flavorful meat compilation. For our sides the cornbread was and fries were really good, the Cole slaw had too much vinegar for my liking and the Mac n cheese was terrible. Overall I thought everything except the wings and fries had been sitting for a while so it was not the freshest it could be so that may be impacting my experience. This place is off the main drag on a side street with view of the river. We sat outside in the patio and were able to see the drawbridge go up and down. Started off with the smoked sweet tea (it was weird but good), the server described it as a campfire in a glass. I recommend adding lemon. We shared the 3 meat combo and added wings that way we tried everything plus 2 sides (mac n cheese with some sort of seasoning and fries) plua jalapeño cornbread. It was all delicious and more than enough food. They have a table of all the different sauces to sample. The only thing we didn't see was dessert but we were full after all that. read more

We first discovered this restaurant after our favorite local BBQ restaurant burned down, and this one wasted no time to become our new favorite. We have eaten here multiple times over the past few years, and taken food to go many more times (they're great about phone orders for pick up and are always ready when they say they will be). I haven't eaten in too many restaurants where my seating choices include dining outside, or on either of the two floors that the restaurant has. With neat pictures, paintings, and memorabilia lining the walls on the inside of the building, or the scenic views you can see from outside tables, there is a lot to take in, even before you get to see the menu. For starters, one of their soups is Brunswick Stew, an item I first heard of through a Food Network TV show. My first time having it anywhere was at Briquettes. I wasn't sure if I'd like it so I got a small portion of it. I soon had to request a bigger portion to go with it after I finished it up. You can't go wrong with either the two meat or three meat combo, and it is fairly easy to substitute a meat if you wanted something other than what the menu shows for those items. I love both their pulled pork and beef brisket, and if I get the three meat combo, I usually ask to get a double portion of one of those instead of the chicken. Their jalapeño cheddar cornbread that comes on the side with the meal was not something I was expecting (I was expecting plain old cornbread). I am not a fan of peppers and super spicy things for the most part (there can be exceptions) so without paying much attention, I popped a hunk of that sucker in my mouth and immediately sought out the fire extinguisher. The dry rubbed ribs are excellent, and the wings were some of the best I've ever had. They have a few wing flavors I haven't tried yet but plan to soon. They even have a "rib taster" if you just want a couple on the side with the rest of your meal. Another great side to try is their pork and beans. Their fries are also very delicious. I don't drink alcohol so I can't speak of their various mixed drinks, but they do have Coke products, which makes me happy. My wife once tried their smoked tea. It looked interesting to me, but as I'm not a fan of tea, I hadn't tried it. Lastly, my favorite item on the whole menu, the "blue ribbon chilli" as their menu calls it. Oh my lord, it is a bit spicy for me (and my GI tract pays for it every single time), but it is absolutely delicious, and a filling meal on its own. No matter what else I get from here, I always make sure to get some chilli, and sometimes just get two pints of it to make it my meal for the day. Hands down, my absolute favorite thing from this restaurant, and if that was all they served, it would still be worth the trip for me. On more than one occasion, we have driven the 90 minute round trip from home just to get some chili from here. And now, just posting about it here has now made me hungry for some of their blue ribbon chilli. read more

I had not been here in a while, but I remembered how good the food was, and went back this weekend. It was just as good as I remembered. Being from the South, I am picky about my BBQ. This place has a dish only known in the southeast US. It's called Brunswick stew. They also have Collard greens! I ordered the chili cheese fries to share, and although very expensive, they were good. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, Brunswick stew, and Collard greens! Last Saturday night was the worst and most bizarre experience I have ever had. Upon arrival we ordered drinks from the bar and upon receiving them the manager came out of the kitchen yelling at us to get out, the entire time dropping the "f" word on us and being completely unprofessional. It was a disgrace. Later on they threw our entire 40th reunion group out because one of the members had a Trump hat on, again in a profanity laced tirade. They are now trying to cover themselves saying we were intoxicated. I can assure you we were not and did not deserve to be treated like that. I will never return. read more

This was the first restaurant I went to after quarantine. I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. The wait staff was friendly and very professional, even with all of the rules and changes they had to abide by. All of the meat was extremely moist and flavorful, even without any sauces. The mac & cheese was thick and creamy, the baked beans were delicious, and the cornbread is to die for. I tasted my boyfriend's brisket and it was the best I have ever had. The BEST beef brisket I've ever had. The brisket was cooked to perfection. I can't recommend this BBQ place more. I love the location down in the harbor section of Ashtabula. We started off with the corn and bean dip, I think they call it Mississippi Caviar, that was delicious once I included the mustard style bbq sauce on the chips that kicked up the flavor tremendously. Then the greatest pieces of brisket arrived and my life forever changed. They were so juicy and flavorful. The next time I order them I'll definitely get the 2 meat combo and pick them twice. The baked beans were amazing as well. The only thing I would change is to get a new macaroni & cheese and coleslaw recipe and a new interior decorator. It looks too dive bar for the area and location. The first floor should be an open continuation of the beautiful patio with roll up doors and a redesigned bar area.
