I lived at the Brittany apartments for close to 15 months and it was okay for most part until things went haywire because of one person. I stayed at the 8th floor, where there was a fire accident in the month of November 2019. They said it was started by a tenant, but I don't know the details. They wouldn't tell us for some reason. Anyway, here's what happened. We were all evacuated, and the management promised us to reimburse the rent for the time we were displaced for up to 1 month (December 6, to be precise). I kept going back to check on my unit almost once in every 3 days. Fire accidents do happen, and I am completely mindful of that. My apartment had extensive smoke damage and I no longer wished to go back and live there, so I went ahead and broke my lease immediately.
After a month, I called the Building Manager to ask about the reimbursement. I was shocked when she said my apartment was ready four days after the fire and so, I will be reimbursed for those 4 days. The apartment was in a horrible condition with strong smoke smells even after a month after the fire, for the record. Also, here's the catch. I received the email about the reimbursement 3 days after the fire (LOL). When I tried to tell her that I received no emails, calls or Voicemails informing me that the apartment was ready, her response was unbelievable. She actually said, "Oh I think I called you, but you may have missed my call", which was also a lie. She then went on to use phrases like "I have no time for this", "I am going to end this conversation right here", "I have other things to do" and even went to the extent of throwing insults at me. This pretty much was the case every time I went to her with my concerns about the unit. I am not sure what "other" important work she has rather than dealing with the concerns of her tenants in a responsible manner! Isn't that her (ONLY) job? I then decided to draft an email explaining about my situation and sent it to everyone in the upper management of McKinney Properties, and then finally got the money reimbursed (Thankfully, I was able to get their email ids from the corporate website!). To her own supervisor, the Building Manager blatantly lied saying that she couldn't leave a voicemail to me because my voicemail box was full. I have received in total of about 15 voicemails in the last 4 years...not sure how it got full all of a sudden! I could not help but laugh when I heard that. Also, since I ended my lease, I had to pay rent for 90 days. The only way out for me was to find someone else to sign a new lease. I had to contact the Building Manager to help me out with some of the questions that the prospective tenants asked me. The Building Manager constantly ignored my calls for weeks, and during the only time she picked up, she spoke extremely rudely to get back at me for escalating the issue. Thankfully, I didn't lose my composure and did not utter an insult back at her because, by then, I was used to her insolent behavior. I even tried asking her for an alternate contact which she refused to provide. Along this completely arduous process, she consistently said things that contradicted herself, lied time and again with great confidence, and did everything to make my life more miserable, which was already affected by the fire. Oh also, her proud tagline which she often stated was, "I'm new here. I honestly don't know about this". For God's sake, she was the only point of contact for the tenants! What were we supposed to do! Whom else were we supposed to go to with concerns about the unit!
Overall, it was an utterly painful and a forgettable experience to say the least! read more
