My husband and I went to Kelder's farm on a SUPER SLOW Thursday evening. We intended to JUST pick…read moreapples, but some cider and donuts and go home. We likely would have dropped an easy $60 that night. However when we went to pay for the apple picking we were told that we EACH had to pay an admission fee which was over $20 EACH just to pick apples. Understandable if it was busy but this was 5:20pm and they were closing at 6. We didn't have kids with us and so we asked the guy in charge if the $40 plus dollar fee (this DOES NOT include the apple picking fee) could be waived and were met by a smugness that was off putting to say the least. We have been coming to this farm for 30 years. We live locally and have never experienced this there before. I know these places make a TON of money with this over the top Agri-entertaining but to turn away LOCALS with a $40 plus fee when the place is totally empty is poor business and certainly not how to be a good neighbor! So we left and will never return.

But last fall, we had an experience at the orchard itself that we will never forget. We had the best day walking for hours around the beautiful orchard and picking apples. On the way back to the car with our big bag of fruit we realized that neither of us had the key to the car! It must have dropped at some point in the orchard. We were doomed! There was no way we were going to find a small car key within the fields. We walked around for a while looking and gave up we were about to call for a tow. Then we came upon one of the farmers driving the tractor, and showed him the only picture we had taken that entire day. He looked at it for a few seconds and went off in search of the key. 10 or 15 minutes later, we saw him calling for us in the distance. As we got closer, we saw him laughing and shaking his head - amazingly, he had found the needle in the haystack, and we were saved! That day we also got to meet his daughter and grandson, who were taking a ride on his tractor through the orchard and picking apples of their own. Maynard's apples and stone fruit worlds above any of the others we can find in the area, and we stock up every Saturday. But in addition to the quality of the fruit, the farmers are all so nice and always let you taste what's in season before you purchase. And after this experience, it was clear to us that Maynard farms is truly family and community-oriented organization, and made us even happier to buy our fruit from them every week. Also, since it's a farm we expected dirt and dust, that's part of the fun! But on several occasions when visiting the farmhouse to use the bathroom, we found it to be very dirty with hanging strips of dead flies, spiders in the open window, and unclean hand towels hanging up that looked like they had not been cleaned in weeks with no access to paper towels. We also noticed during an after school event where food was served that a chicken walked up and ate off the same salad bowel that was being served to people. I hope they fix these issues and really turn it around soon. It's a shame it's gotten like this.

BLUF: Beautiful, timeless garden; use restrooms elsewhere…read more Innisfree Garden is open to the public between late April and mid-November every year. We visited in late October last year, and more than ten years ago before that. The garden has a timeless beauty, and many of the details looked identical or nearly the same as in our prior visit. The visit experience is essentially a counter-clockwise loop around Tyrrel Lake that can be slowly walked in about 60 to 90 minutes. Per Innisfree Garden's website, the garden is divided into miniature "cup gardens" -- sets of different features / "focal points" that all connect to the lake and the path around it. For both for our visits, I think we were most attentive for about the first 60% of the path, as "feature fatigue" started to set in just past the bridge over the lake. We quickly walked through / past the wood cabin during of our visits. Logistics: The Garden is about 90 minutes from New York City by car. Do consider bathroom breaks before or after visiting the Garden, as the restrooms here consist only of porta-potties. Cellular coverage at the Garden is weak, so it may be difficult to retrieve digital tickets from your phone if you haven't already downloaded them. Fortunately, one workaround is to tell them your name, if you are the person who booked the tickets in advance. Bring your own food and water as necessary, as these are not sold in the Garden. Wear sturdy shoes with grip and ankle support, as there are some steep angles along the initial part of the path and by some features.

I think the majority of reviews have hit the nail on the head. This place is a not so hidden gem of the Hudson Valley. It's so beautiful, it's a challenge to take a bad image because it is so picturesque. There are undulating scenes which can be framed in your mind's eye and pops of interesting subjects (a sculpture, rock formation, hills, etc.) to see. It's a splendor visually and changes with the seasons. It's not as manicured as a Japanese garden...it's more expansive. I think the beauty of this place can haunt you. General admission is $10. Membership also starts at $50/season.

As I have been to two other similar farms, I thought I knew what to expect. This farm experience was completely different than any I had ever experienced previously. Although the animals were beautiful in appearance, they seemed to only respond to the owner when she plied them with treats. They didn't seem to be trained to walk along with strangers, namely people they were not familiar with. I was especially disappointed as I had booked a private as opposed to a group hike. I will say that the owner was accommodating when the weather was not conducive to hiking; she allowed us to change our reservation to another day.

There is also a very nice gift shop to check out while you wait if you want to head over early. You get to pick your own alpacas and set off on the trek. There are some small hills, but nothing too strenuous. I have asthma and did not have any issues. Alex and Denise were so sweet, informative, and patient. Much like the staff, the alpacas all have fun and diverse personalities.
