I don't expect everyone to be overly friendly, but I do expect basic professionalism and respect, especially from staff or trainers working around members. The gym itself may be fine, and other people there may be great, but this interaction left a bad impression. I would be hesitant to recommend the gym unless management does a better job making sure trainers treat members with respect.

I have been going here since October 2022 and I already feel an overwhelming sense of community. The programming here is somewhat like a crossfit gym but I find it even better! I have been doing crossfit for 3 years now and I honestly think CFD's programming has pushed me further than those 3 years did. They focus on a lot of strength with good form instead of "just go as heavy as you can" like in CF gyms. I also feel like the workouts are NOT a competition like at crossfit gyms. Most programming is not "for time", it is just about moving well for a preset time or amount of sets. The demographic at this gym ranges from young to older as well as beginners to experts in fitness. CFD welcomes all walks of life! The coaches help you adjust all exercises to meet your level of fitness. Something special about this gym is that they really take the time to get to know you and your movement style. When you start here they complete a fitness assessment which basically looks at your mobility and balance in strength between your left/right and upper/lower body. It is a very helpful tool to help identify strengths and deficits for each individual. I highly recommend joining this gym. It's in a great location and the staff are incomparable. Let me assure you that Courage Fitness is an extremely welcoming and supportive place to be, no matter whether you're just starting your fitness journey or are in fighting shape already. The coaches do a marvelous job of accommodating different levels of fitness and modifications for any injuries. I'm not sure how they're running things during Covid (I moved in July and had to end my membership) but previously they had two major categories of classes, the "Hustle" class which is a good starting point and is an intense "boot camp" style class, all body weights/dumbells/kettle bells. There's also the classic "CrossFit" style class scheme, with weightlifting and all that. If you've never done any weightlifting, don't worry, they'll set you up with a personal trainer (included in the starting package) who will coach you on basic form for all the requisite exercises and the coaches do a great job of helping coach you on your form during workouts. It's also a fantastic community. My first few workouts I had a hard time at points because the trainers had me laughing so hard. Yes, it a touch on the expensive side relative to a basic gym membership, but you're getting a planned set of workouts and a high level of personal attention.

During the middle of the day, it's fairly empty, so there's maybe only 1-3 other people there during off-peak hours. Even in peak times, I see everyone working in with each other without any hassle. Desmond recently gave the place a really nice renovation with some new racks, so it's looking good there. Even before then, the gym's got all the equipment I need to get my workout done and then some. I always feel welcome here, and Desmond greets me by name anytime he sees me come in. If you just want to lift and don't need classes/training, the $20/mo is absolutely a great deal.

Equipment is on the low end side and not up kept well. It's expensive. Unless you plan to swim and play basketball, it's not worth the price. Unfortunately downtown Durham doesn't have many good options. We really need a solid body building gym in Durham. Oh and some of the staff are just rude. Not all of them, most are nice folks. Tony at the front desk is all class. There is an older women who works there that is really not nice.

You can find everything you need to get an amazing workout across any modality of your choosing. The pricing model is also one of the best in the area. I am currently on a personal trainer package which allows me to bring clients in for 1 on 1 training, a service that is not available at commercial gyms. Maitland's Method might not be on your radar for personal fitness because it's not one of those big conglomerate gyms, but you should definitely consider it. Just to give you a summary: - This gym is primarily for personal training but you get access to some of the equipment as a regular client - They offer individual and partner training sessions (partner sessions are half the price which makes it very affordable) - Emphasis on strength and resistance training - Lots of very solid equipment and free weights Maitland and his team have a long history of strength training -- check out the wall of bodybuilding trophies and photos when you walk through the entrance. Among their trainers are bodybuilding champions and an ex-NFL linesman. You don't need to be an aspiring bodybuilder to appreciate the workout routine. There's a diverse mix of clients -- men, women, young, and old. Each trainer follows Maitland's method (hence the name) which has been refined over many years. Still learning about the method but so far so good! The trainers help you throughout the routine, keep a log of your exercises, and help you build fitness plans (for inside and outside the gym). For someone like me that forgets to count reps, this place is a godsend. My workout has become much more focused and efficient. I use to be able to waste hours at the gym when I was younger but now I recognize the importance of getting the most out of the time as possible. The extra cost for personal training has been well worth it! Trey has been especially friendly and effective. At nearly 7' tall and built like a football player (no surprise he use to play for the Colts) he might seem a little intimidating but he's actually probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. The exercises have been safe and I've been able to blend my new routine with soccer and running. He's helping prepare me for a marathon and build muscle at the same time (which will hopefully help prevent injury).
