I would be hesitant to recommend the gym unless management does a better job making sure trainers treat members with respect.

During the middle of the day, it's fairly empty, so there's maybe only 1-3 other people there during off-peak hours. Even in peak times, I see everyone working in with each other without any hassle. Desmond recently gave the place a really nice renovation with some new racks, so it's looking good there. Even before then, the gym's got all the equipment I need to get my workout done and then some. I always feel welcome here, and Desmond greets me by name anytime he sees me come in. If you just want to lift and don't need classes/training, the $20/mo is absolutely a great deal.

He asked if she was using it and she copped an attitude saying "are we not allowed to do supersets". He returned and he shrugged and said she is "doing a superset". The gym is a shared space, I could have finished up my sets in between her running and front raises. There's better gyms around Chapel Hill.

A one-month guest membership was $70 for Duke employees, but it took quite a good 30 minutes just to sign up (needed to verify things, take my picture for ID, etc.). It's not a "high-end" fitness center with lattes, but it's certainly acceptable. They had some group exercise classes, but I didn't really look into those. Median age of people I saw there (~6:30-7:30am) was ~60 years old or so. It did seem like one emphasis here was for rehabilitation, too: one of the first things I saw after entering was a big set of rolling walkers. The layout is a bit odd-- large track circling various pieces of equipment, with free weights in one corner and bikes (for spinning classes) in another. I was never clear what the very center was for-- perhaps some sort of sport that wasn't being played in the early morning hours I went. Much of the equipment seems old. There was a lap pool in a room off to the side, but I never tried it. Positives: + Friendly staff + You get a locker key each time you check in (while they hold your car key) + Towel service + Sauna Potential negatives: - No TVs or other good distractions - Awkwardly large layout - Uncurtained group men's shower Synopsis: I was fine with this facility for a few weeks, but I definitely felt out of place as likely the youngest or second-youngest person exercising there in the early hours (and I'm in my 40s).

I have been working with her for over a year. Her knowledge and enthusiasm communicated through out her workouts is the best I have experienced. Her company, Rapid Results is aptly named. Kettlebell workouts and stretching she incorporates has quickly increased my strength, balance and flexibility. She is fun loving, compassionate, and always teaching, teaching, teaching. She explains everything, she knows tons about not just technique but how and where it affects and strengthens. I like that I can work out at her place or via Zoom, she pays attention and helps all. I feel like a "there" participant. She customizes workouts weekly so we may be doing classic moves but are always learning something new which keeps the class interesting. You can work at your own speed and weight, no pressure except she will push you if she thinks you are lame ducking it, I believe is positive. She does the workouts with us so we can always see her technique. She walks it like she talks it. I highly recommend her and kettlebells!

Huge mistake as everything has gone downhill over the last 12 months. Equipment is consistently broken. Currently, in a row of 10ish cardio machines, 5 have been broken for weeks. Weight machines also consistently break. An excuse often given is that the equipment is old and parts hard to find. Here is an idea, if equipment is too old, consistently breaks, and hard to find parts, maybe get some new equipment? What is the excuse for a urinal and sink in the men's room being broken for weeks? I tried contacting management to no avail. There is also consistent turnover in staff, maybe because they advertise the front desk position at a whopping ten bucks per hour. would love to cancel our membership but they have us locked in conveniently otherwise we would find a new gym immediately. I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!
