It is no surprise that Los Angeles--the second largest city in the country--has some of the least access to public parks and nature in the nation. To be exact, it lands at #74 out of 100 U.S. cities (source: KCET). Thankfully, Griffith Park is nearby and remains one of the largest municipal parks with urban wilderness areas in the United States (source: LAparks). Within Griffith Park is Bronson Canyon which is one of the areas where there are several BBQ/picnic tables and trailheads. A popular hike of a brief 0.2 miles (50 foot elevation gain) is up Bronson Canyon to Bronson Cave. Dogs are welcome when leashed. Everyone knows this as the location where Batman's Bat Cave was filmed. It is crazy knowing how small the cave is and that the Batmobile somehow fit inside. Although the cave is "closed" by metal fence due to erosion, you can still easily take photos. There is also a labyrinth of rocks and the nearby HOLLYWOOD sign which makes this easy trek ideal for photos. Few know that the cave was man-made by the Union Rock Company as the Brush Canyon Quarry. The quarry was utilized to extract rock for street construction during the early twentieth century. For the cave, continue alllll the way down Canyon Drive until it ends at a gate. There is a large, dirt parking lot with many parking spots and at the end a smaller one with about 6 parking spots. Do not bring a wide truck because much of the road, with cars parked on both sides, can only fit a single car yet it is open to two-way traffic. read more

When I found via the internet, going to the Batcave (Bronson Canyon) was mandatory for my families next trip to Los Angeles. To sat it was fun for a 50 year old comic book fan to be there was nothing short of awesome. When reading about Bronson, I learned of other shows that used Bronson as a filming location. This was an easy hike .2 miles and perfect if you have a curious toddler like I do. I came with my friend and we were going to hike to the top of the Hollywood sign but decided to do Bronson Canyon instead and go easy since I had my son with me. I later found out that there were people hiking to the top of the Hollywood sign with strollers so next time I'll probably bring my stroller so my son can join us to the top! The actual cave was blocked off but it was still cool to see. The view of the Hollywood sign is gorgeous. read more

As far as hiking, depending where you park, it's a 0.2 mile dirt hike to the "bat cave"! Almost too easy, forgive me. But so rewarded. Neato crows or huge birds swirling up above. Enjoyed the vast scenery, even within the canyon. So awesome to imagine the many shows that were filmed here! read more

We came to explore the bat caves but decided to walk to see the Hollywood sign (see the one that's a tad longer- views are much better). It was quite the hike so make sure you bring water! We forgot that part. Parking was free and lots of it on a Monday morning. Wasn't too bad of a trek with the clouds but as soon as the sun came out we got pretty hot and regretted not having water. Close hiking trail to my home. I enjoy coming here during my free time, very clean and relaxing.

This review is only on the cave. No effort needed. You can "hike" this mini trail with a dress and heels and you still won't get tired. It took us about 5 minutes to get from the parking lot to the cave lol (4 Stars since it's not challenging) ‍ On the bright side it did looked pretty cool on video I got a lot of comments on my social media platform. Took my two furbabies on the hike but never made it to the top of the Hollywood sign as they were exhausted. Randomly first heard about this place from a co-worker back in May, and then ended up there for work last week. Normally I dread being in Griffith Park because I am a true indoor person, but these caves were pretty cool. Cool in the fact where I was out of the sun but also cool that there were a few tunnels to choose from leading to a great view of the Hollywood sign, in addition to the rock formation out back. Pretty much all the ground is dirt throughout, and parts are a little uneven so make sure you watch where you're going. Also, heads up-literally-when we were in the caves, we did have to evacuate due to falling rock debris within. First it was a soft trickle of pebbles. Then a couple of golfball-sized rocks. THEN a larger volleyball-size chunk decided to fall. I know it's hard to gauge when such a thing will occur, but keep your ears unplugged and your eyes off your phone and hopefully you'll be able to make a mad dash if necessary. We were on a shoot so of course we were all able to safely evacuate, but when you're exploring on your own, there is no such thing with security or anyone to tell you you're going in at your own risk. I guess for the most part, people just go in and out and don't spend a long length of time inside the caves, but just be careful. Otherwise, beautiful area that I did not expect to enjoy. read more

Reason #325 why the Hunny can't stand her husband (yes, nearly all wives keep a list): her idiot husband introduced her baby to the 1960s series "Batman." "So," I asked this baby (actually a pre-teener) earlier this year, "what are some things you'd like to do when we're in Southern Cal?" One of the first things she said was "The Batcave!" Okay, it's on the list of possibles. It takes a little doing to get to the Batcave, but not much doing. The Batcave is actually the Bronson Caves, located not far from Bronson Ave. Drive through Hollywood to the end of Canyon Ave., pick one of two lots to park in, and walk up a not-so-steep fire road for a quarter mile to the caves. (The end of the road is a girls camp run by the city, but that's another story.) Once the tourist trap mindset is gone, this is a good place to get a breather from the madness of La-La Land. The trail ends here, so you can bring a picnic to eat. You can go into the caves to escape the intense summer heat. You can do a little rock climbing. My surprise: you also get a nice view of the most famous sign in LA. Holy Hollywood Sign, Batman! The Bronson Caves is a piece of local history, a hidden landmark, and a nice little romp. read more

Easy trail on a hot day. THE PREP: Took our dog, Stella, on an easy hike with us in Griffith Park for some exercise and sun. It was a hot day so we made sure to put on sunscreen and pack plenty of water. THE CAVE/GROUNDS: The hike up the hill is not bad. Once you get to the cave area there is a lot of open ground to walk around. You can go inside the cave and get to the other side. One of the caves had ground water, so we opted just to peek inside that one. When you walk inside one of the cave entrances it is pretty dark. I could see via my phone screen as I was recording, but I couldn't see with the naked eye. There is a rock formation on the ground near the cave. The rock formation is in the shape of rings. The hillsides are dirt and green. We hiked up one of them and got a nice view of the Hollywood sign. Stella was delighted. She really liked sniffing around the caves. THE TIPS: This was before COVID-19. I am not sure if people are currently hiking here. read more

Nothing needs to be said about this amazing cave location. It is where Adam West and Burt Ward drove the batmobile out of the batcave every episode. If you are lucky enough to be in this cavern and Central area the birds and noises are so unique. It is about a half of a mile from the parking lot to this location and currently the caves are closed. It seems like there are some rock slides happening lately but it is absolutely worth visiting especially before the whole area is closed Have you live in the LA area make sure to visit this place before they close it and a Hollywood icon is lost forever read more

There are several trails on Bronson Canyon. We came here for a mini hike to see the Bat Cave. Unfortunately, the Bat Cave was blocked off by a fence on both sides, but we got to see it anyway. Parking is easy and the "hike" is less than a half mile from the parking lot. There were a couple labyrinths off to the side of the cave which was kinda cool to see. There is also a great view of the Hollywood sign. There were a couple benches and a picnic table to enjoy lunch on and portable restrooms if needed. read more

We were trying to take a hike to see the Hollywood sign but the heat got too us way too quick here. If you're coming for a hike make sure the temps are low or you come very early. We made it a little over half a mile and could see the Hollywood sign in the distance but since temps were over 100 the day we went we decided to turn back. This is a relatively easy trail (on a cooler day) with moderate inclines and pretty even terrain. There is really no shade here so be prepared. The parking lot is very small (another reason to come early) and when we left around 11am the lot was completely full. Police were definitely enforcing parking signs so be careful where you park. read more

Would I come back? Absolutely. I usually go hiking near the Hollywood Reservoir and make my way up to the sign, but if I start here, it is a closer drive. Difficulty: Easy. Duration: 2.5 hours. 6 miles round trip. After hearing from people talking about the bat cave near Hollywood sign I finally decided to look for it. Hollywood sign hike is one of my go to hikes and I know the trails back and forth. I usually start off at Hollywood reservoir and continue to Mulholland Drive and going up to the back of the sign. For this trail, you can just map it to the Yelp address. When you enter the one way road, just keep on going straight until you hit the dead end. You would either want to park in the first or second lot. The dead end will lead to the Hollywood sign hike and the one closest to the second lot will lead you to the bat cave. Make sure to arrive early (before 7am) if you want to find parking. The trail that leads you to the bat cave has a board with a bear on it. The trail is less than half a mile long and will loop you back to the entrance. When you enter the cave there are different exits that you can take. They all lead you to the rock formation. After you are done with this, you can be adventurous and hike to the Hollywood sign. Make your way back to the parking lot and head to the dead end. From there it is a straight path to the sign. You will end up at a crossroad with a sign posted. One way will take you to Griffith Park Observatory and the other leads you to the sign. From there just make your way up and you will be at the sign in no time. What I like about this trail is that it is pretty hard for you to get lost. Hike this with friends or even hike it by yourself. Don't have to worry about going missing. The trails are even and the paths are wide. The next time I come back I will be running this trail. read more

Went here for a quick 15 minute walk up the hill toward the Hollywood sign. In that time, multiple homeless people were camping along the trail and within the brush and trees, and some real characters that looked fresh out of prison passed us, and also were behind us on the trail. Started getting a weird feeling about the place, so turned around early. Got back to the car and it was broken into. They stole a $400 camera lens I had stuffed in one of my shoes, and they stole my wife's credit cards, but not the debit card, ID, or other obvious belongings. Probably to be less obvious. We didn't bother reporting it, being you have to steal $950 worth of stuff for it to be a crime in this great state. We were obviously watched, for how fast they got into our locked trunk and gone with our stuff within 15 mins. All the while, Children playing on a nearby playground, with a homeless tent nearby. We will not be back, and it's very sad to see once a beautiful area turned to a campground for homeless and petty crimes. Wake up California read more

I've live my whole life in Los Angeles and I finally took the time to go see the famous cave used in the Batman TV series. I would watch the old school original Batman TV show back in the 70's and thought that was the coolest thing to see that car race out of the cave. The hike to the cave is super easy and only about a half a mile from the trail entrance. read more

Bronson Canyon-Griffith Park - To the Batcave - Parks Near Me - Los Angeles, California

To the Batcave, Robin! Bronson Canyon (a.k.a. Bronson Caves) has been used as a filming location for around 100 movies and 35 TV shows, of which the most notable is perhaps the 1960s Batman TV series with Adam West. The caves are located in Griffith Park in Hollywood. Their convenient yet remote-looking setting makes them a favored site for the film industry. The caves aren't actually that big. The front entrance is on the west side of a cliff, and the rear entrance plus two smaller entrances are on the east side. There's definitely going to be some ducking if you choose to go through the smaller entrances. The cave stretches about 100 feet between the west and east sides. Past the east side is a large spiral labyrinth constructed of stones. It's unclear what entity constructed this. Perhaps aliens from "Star Trek: The Next Generation", which had a scene filmed here. There are two small parking lots nearby, but parking gets crazy here. Arrive early or park to the south on Canyon Drive or in the surrounding neighborhood where parking is slightly less crazy. It's a pretty short trek from the parking lots to the caves, but you can make it part of a longer hike (e.g. hike up to the Hollywood sign). Or hike to the caves from the Griffith Observatory (about 3.5 miles each way). There's plenty to see at Griffith Park, and Bronson Canyon is a decent sight to put on your list. read more

Went to see the Batcave as used in the old Batman TV show. It's now got chain link to stop you going into it but I still got some good photos and we were able hum the theme while marching around. It has a twelve bar blues progression, using only three chords until the coda. You know it. There is also a great view of the Hollywood sign from the far side of the batcave. This is a nice quiet park to bring guests from out of town who want to take a short hike to see a cool cave and get a nice view of the Hollywood sign. The cave isn't huge, but it's fun to take photos and walk through it. Many things have been filmed here, including some episodes of Star Trek and the Batman TV series from the 60's, which is why some people refer to this as the "Batcave." After walking through the cave, I love seeing the view of the Hollywood sign beyond the small hill. You can actually walk up the hill with the small trail on it... just wear good shoes and be willing to get a bit dirty because you may need to kind of slide back down the hill due to the steepness. If you walk all the way to the end of Canyon Drive past the parking lot, there's also the beginning to another trail that is way longer. I think it may lead to the Hollywood sign, but not sure. I haven't hiked all the way but on a cloudy day it might be nice (sunny days get way too hot for me!) Anyway, the journey to and from the cave itself is an awesome way to spend 30-60 minutes to check out, chill out at, and show off :) read more

Spoiler Alert: Don't read my review if you want to discover cool things on your own. My good friend and Yelper Mel D. surprised me today when we hiked at Bronson Canyon-Griffith because I didn't do any research first. The main fire road/trail for Bronson Canyon starts out pretty straight up the hill, but if you take a right at the first intersection you will get a really cool surprise. Stop here if you don't want that surprise ruined. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I was totally thrilled and surprised to see the Batcave which I had never ever seen in real life, but I've always wanted to. The topography in that area is so different than the rest of Griffith Park because of all the rocks. It almost looks like lava rock on one side of the mountain. We probably picked the worst possible day to attempt a hike to the top of the Griffith Park or near the Hollywood sign because it was about 80 degrees and humid at 8:00 a.m. Due to the heat we only made it a couple miles up the main trail before we turned around. I'll definitely try this trail out again when the weather cools down. Misc. Info: * It is right up the street for The Oaks Gourmet which has great food. Check it out if you are hungry before or after your hike. * It is also up the street from Birds Rotisserie Chicken Café & Bar which I love too. * Lots of films and T.V. series were filmed in Bronson Canyon. This is an awesome place to hike! Directions: from Franklin Ave, head north on Canyon Dr. Take a drive through a nice neighborhood and watch out for residents walking their dogs or jogging. You will pass through some gates, there's a playground, keep going...then you will find a dirt parking area. Park. Do a mini happy dance for free parking. Exit car. To the Bronson Caves (AKA were films and the iconic Batman TV series was shot): as you exit your car and walk to the trailhead, you will see a trail heading south. Walk up this trail. To your left you will see hills and brush. This is where I saw the coyote trotting around! Keep on the trail, it will curve to your left and then TA DA! *cue Batman theme* Walk around or in and out of cave, it's short so there's enough light. Take the cool pics. The other side of the cave looks cool. I liked that there were trash cans all around, helping keep the place clean. NOTE: In January 2014, 3 females scrambled up the hillside on the eastern side of the caves. They were were unable to get back down and had to be rescued. Please don't attempt to scramble or climb unless you are experienced! The walk up to the caves is short and a no brainer, almost anyone can do it. When you're done with the caves walk back down, watch for Wil E. (Coyote) then go to the trailhead heading north. Continue on. It's a wide trail and it curves around the hills quite a bit. There's very little shade and a slow and steady incline. Lots of people run on this trail. It's not the most scenic of trails but it does it's job for fitness and landmarks (Bronson Caves and Hollywood sign) For the most part our hike/walk was pretty peaceful. There wasn't anything too dangerous or hard about it. The incline and lack of shade is a little daunting. If you want to get a nice view of the backside of the Hollywood sign, this is your hike. read more

This is a great place within the Los Angeles city limits for hiking. The the trail we hiked was approximately three miles each way. So total is almost six miles per one of our fellow hiker's running app for her phone. The is considered intermediate according to its steepness. But you shouldn't have any problems hiking up to the Hollywood sign area if your body is conditioned. Talking about the Hollywood sign, the hikers are no longer allowed to go directly to the sign. But rather, the trail is shortened and then fenced off so nobody can go next to it. It was a warm hike as we were there after 4:00 pm. It was probably still in the 80 degree range. So bring plenty of sunblock. The trail is wide, and there aren't as many rocks compared to the Pasadena trails. But I wish there were more trees. There was plenty of horse dung everywhere since we share the trails with equestrians. Just try not to step in the wet ones. Gross! Overall the trail was nice. The scenery of Downtown Los Angeles was beautiful. It's a great place to see the LA Basin in a panoramic view. It is worth a trip going there to check out the scenery of our city... along with a great cardiovascular workout. read more

Hike to the Hollywood Sign via Bronson Canyon, 6+ miles round trip. Went January 2nd with my 50+ year old uncle and 13 year old niece. I hike pretty often, so I was worried about how strenuous this trail would be, but it was nice wide and pretty much paved. Directions to trail: You can pull up Bronson Caves Los Angeles, CA up on Google maps. I took the 5 South to Franklin, went past the Griffith Observatory parking and made a right on Canyon Dr. You go through a neighborhood and you'll know your coming up to the trail head because you go through gates, there's 2 parking lots, the one closest to the trail head only has like 10 spots, but the one below is a lot bigger or you can park on the street. Trail Head: After parking in the further lot in the dirt, we walked toward the other lot and went past it. Ignore the trail on the right hand side and keep going up the path you are on. If you are not sure, ask other hikers, they were very helpful. This is a wide dirt trail, go along it and you will meet an intersection of Brush Canyon and Mulholland Fire Road. There is a wooden stake that has the words hand written on it "You made it", go left from there. There's horses on this trail, and when I went there was a good amount of horse poop too. Once you go left, and keep going, you hit a road. If you want to go behind the sign, go up the paved road and it will take you to the top, right behind the sign. If you want to see it from the front but from a distance, go left down the paved road. Trails taken: 1) Brush Canyon 2) Mulholland Fire Road (these trails are not marked) Got a pretty good workout from this 6+ mile hike, great views of LA. I would definitely recommend this hike, good to take people from out of town too! read more

Great hike! Bronson Canyon is so close to Franklin Village. Take a left (if you come from Hollywood) or a right (if you come from Los Feliz) on either Bronson Ave. or Canyon Dr., whatever it's closer to you, they'll connect into on Canyon Dr. Keep straight into the hills till you'll enter a nice, shady park, it's obvious- with picnic benches and swings for kids on both sides. The park has water fountains if you need more drinking water. There's parking on the right side of the road. You can park and walk or keep driving to an unpaved lot to the right side (it's a bathroom over there, the only one!). There's one more lot on the left side further way. All free. All close to the main trail. Easy walk from any of these parking options. If you want to visit the Caves, after the unpaved parking lot, before you hit the parking lot that's on the left, you'll see a metal barrier (for cars) on the right. Go around it, walk on the main trail and you'll reach the caves in a few minutes, it's a walk, not a hike. But it's fun to see a piece of Hollywood history. Cool caves! If you want to go see the Hollywood sign, once you pass the parking lot that's on the left, keep on the main trail. It's so obvious. Good workout, it's a bit uphill, more in the beginning, then, it gets easier. Takes about 2-3 hours up and back. As everybody recommends, bring a hat, sunscreen, water. Most of the trail isn't in the shade, the sun really hits you. But the trail is wide. Amazing views! So beautiful to see Downtown, Hollywood, Century City from up there! We did see a snake on the way coming to the main trail, not a rattle snake, so be careful if you bring kids and pets! If I would own a pet, I'd keep it on the leash, as the park rangers recommend, not everyone respects the rule. There are stables around and there are Hollywood tours organized for horse riders. It's fun to run into horses and their riders on the main trail. Sure, I don't enjoy the horse poop or its smell, but it's different, part of the experience. Keep up on the main trail till you'll reach a paved road. If you want to see the front of the Hollywood sign, take a left. It's near Mullholland, great view of the sign. Couldn't be better! That's what we did. If you want to see the back of the Hollywood sign, take a right. We'll do that some other time to check out the views! Great way to relax, exercise and see part of the Hollywood history. It's a hike with a purpose, which makes it more exciting and fun! read more

We came here after sitting in horrendous traffic going up to the Observatory. I was a bit worried that we wouldn't find the bat cave but yelpers came to the rescue! It was a very short walk (approx 10 minutes) and easy to find. I thought the the caves would be bigger than they were but it was still pretty cool to finally check out. To extend our hike, we attempted to go hike a bit more but ran into a rattlesnake laying and blocking the hiking road.... soooooo... we turned around and left. Better safe than sorry! The actual cave is fenced for no trespassing, but you can get close enough to it that it's still worth it. Don't just go there and haul ass right away. It's a really short hike so you won't be exhausted when you get there. This place is one of those local secrets and you should soak in the history of this place. Maybe research things that took place there. Not only has the Batman tv show has been filmed there but several other things. You can walk straight through the caves but don't worry. There are no real life bats. This place has evolved into something that has its own energy. Take your time and play with the rocks. The hollywood sign in some places look gigantic because it creates an optical illusion. You can see Madonnas old castle at the top of the mountain next to the sign. This really is a spiritual place for those of us that came here with a dream. So please offer to take peoples pictures if you can. Make them feel good about taking pictures too. You are in hollywood so respect that. Everyone is beautiful here. There are two parking lot area and street parking near Bronson Cave and Brush Canyon Trail. I was there around 7:30am on Sunday and was able to find plenty of space to park. The trail to Bronson Cave is short but cool to see the old Bat Cave from the TV show Batman. The first gate with the smokey bear sign is the start of the trailhead. There are two portable restrooms at Bronson Cave. You can get a glimpse of the Hollywood Sign from here. But no one is going to visit this area just for a short hike to Bronson Cave, they also use this area to hike Brush Canyon Trail to see the Hollywood Sign in two ways, front of the sign or back of the sign at Mount Lee. This is the second gate at the end of the road. There are posted signs here, so it's pretty easy to follow. Brush Canyon is a steady incline, once you see Mulholland Trail, turn left. If you turn right, it will go towards the Observatory. Continue hiking on Mulholland Trail, you will see another fork, take the trail going up. Just bypass Hollyridge trail as it's a trail used by Sunset Ranch Stables, it's pretty much poop all over this trail, nothing special going down here. Once you arrive to the paved road of Mount Lee Drive. If you want to take pictures in front of the sign, turn left and go towards Tyrolian Tank. This actually has a good spot to take pictures in front of the sign. If you want to take pictures on top of the Hollywood Sign, then go right up to Mount Lee Drive. You will follow this road all the way up to Mount Lee/Hollywood Sign. If you're feeling energized after completing Mount Lee/Hollywood Sign, hop onto the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail to Cahuenga Peak, The Wisdom Tree and Burbank Peak. Here is my take, I'll probably won't hike this trail much because there are a lot of other trails to hike in Griffith Park that is poop free:) If you're a tourist and want to see the Hollywood Sign or live really close by to this trail. Then this is an ok place to hike if you can stand the horse poop. This is roughly about 7 mile round trip. I recommend starting at Burbank Peak Trail which is shorter at about 3 mile round trip to Mount Lee/Hollywood Sign and you will pass by Burbank Peak, The Wisdom Tree and Cahuenga Peak. This trail feels more like hiking with no horse poop versus a service road converted as a trail. Be sure to check out the Bronson Bat Caves. It is a super short side trail (~5-10 min) to your right as you start the hike, but it is really worth seeing! Plus, after going through the caves, you can see a really really fabulous view of the Hollywood sign!! But still most definitely worthwhile to do the rest of the hike to the back of Hollywood sign. Parking is easy, dirt lot inside the park, or you can park outside on the streets. It gets super crowded so pick your times carefully when you hike! read more

SPOILER If you've seen my previous hike reviews as much as I am for adventures and the art of getting lost, sometimes I am on a time constraint. Honestly not much of a spoiler, it's a simple 20-30 minute hike. What makes you stay longer is enjoying the view. Directions: It's pretty self-explanatory. There should be parking to the right of Canyon Drive if Hollywood Camp is on your left. Hiking Difficulty: Easy Nothing treacherous. Follow the path off Canyon Drive, make a slight uphill and boom! By the way, there is no shade until you reach the cave. Overall: 5 stars. This is a pretty neat hike. You have the Batman cave, you a rock maze, the view of the Hollywood sign, AND a beautiful view of Los Angeles. For those in need of nice aesthetics and a simple hike, check this place out! Got there on a Sat at 7am before the heat and tourists. Parking at a few spots near the Bronson caves. One dirt lot and the other is a paved parking lot. 3 hour hike, round trip. Bring plenty of water if going up and behind the Hollywood sign. I brought 1 large bottle and 2 runners bottles. Plus I had a cooler with one more bottle in it. Just enough water! read more

What a great hike up to the Hollywood sign. We took our 8 and 2 year old. The 8 year old made the whole way. It's a bit of a hike up 1.9 miles to the front of the sign or 2.3 miles to the back but if you take your time it's not bad. Sunset was amazing! The park gates state that they close at Sunset but we stayed at the top until sunset and then ran down and they were still open. Was a great way to spend the afternoon. Nice wide clear pathway up to the sign, uphill most of the way. read more

Out of shape? Easily winded? Bad knees? Small children that want to be carried? This hike is for you! If you don't like the sun, come early or late right before dusk there is no shade except in the cave on this trail. The walk is 15 minutes. I feel like a total badass in the bat cave, Batman's layer. The views, no Hollywood sign from here, but the views are incredible! read more

Easy, moderate hike, takes you up to a cool spot where you can take photos with the Hollywood sign, saw some horses going up the trail which was nice, plenty of parking at the bottom and gates stayed open until after 8pm read more
