My family and I have been members of the Bronx Zoo for several years. I was born and raised in the Bronx and I always remember as a child our many trips to the zoo whether it was with family or on a school class trip. We love the entire zoo but we have our favorite spots that we always see when we visit. We enjoy the children's zoo, the bug carousel, the butterfly garden and the monorail. We like to visit the bison, sea lions, rhinos, flamingos, giraffes and zebras to name a few. If you can afford the membership I highly recommend it especially if you are planning on visiting multiple times throughout the year. You can save a lot of money and you get exclusive access to member only events before they open to the public such as Boo at the Zoo and Holiday lights. Parking is included in most memberships but double check before purchasing and you also get a free t-shirt plus discounts for food and drinks plus at the souvenir shops as well. read more

Haven't been to the Bronx Zoo in the longest time and recently visited again... Getting to the zoo is easy via mass transit - take the train West Farms Sq - East Tremont Ave and follow the signs to the Bronx Zoo. Pretty simple 6 minute walk from the station... walking straight. Check in was easy - simply print your tickets or show the tickets from your phone to have them scan your bar code. There are "you are here" maps and plenty of staff to help if you get lost. Wow, prices have gone up for adults $28/pp. Lucky I went during corporate week and some exhibits are not included (so have to pay extra). Not crowded at all in December. However, it was cold so not many animals were out. So didn't see any, lions or tigers, but did see some bears! There were plenty of peacocks around. Camel was chilling, gorillas were shy, mouse house was smelly (couldn't walk out of there fast enough), chimpanzee was doing stretches, etc. During the holidays, there is also the Holiday Lights show going on so that is a separate ticket that starts in the evening. During the day you can walk around to see everything while in the zoo. Dancing Crane Cafe has a variety of food options for lunch. Surprisingly the food was actually good. Chicken tenders were moist and not dry (better than many ball parks!), burger was good, fries were ok. You can bring your own food and eat outside at the benches. Plenty of restrooms at designated locations inside the park. Don't forget to visit the store for any souvenirs - they have some cute stuff. T-shirts, sweatshirts, stuffed animals, tote bags, etc. Overall it was ok experience. Didn't get to see everything given had to go to another event so will have to come back in the spring. read more

One of the best zoos! It is so large, with so much to see. Every exhibit is thoughtfully laid out. They had the Dinosaur Exhibit and it was so fascinating. The price of concessions were reasonable too, especially for New York. My family had a great time. read more

This place is huge and I know we didn't even see half. There are so many beautiful birds here and we leaned there are over 9000 species of birds. You definitely need a lot of time here but we had an enjoyable time although many animals didn't seem to want to be bothered. Maybe it was too cold for them. This is a great zoo. So many animals and their habitats are very large and well designed. The design of the fencing allows you to be closer to the animals. The only issue is there needs to be more signage because it is such a large zoo and has so many pathways. read more

Took my grandson to the Bronx Zoo for his 3rd birthday on a HOTTTTT day. We parked near the Asia parking lot. The shuttle to the Children's Zoo was $7 per person so we decided to walk since it was a estimate of 10 minutes walking and looking at animals. We went on a Wednesday and the entrance to main Zoo was free however we paid $7 per person to enter the Children's Zoo. The Zoo was pretty crowded however we had a good time. This place advertises that it is open until 5 pm...BUT they take the scanners away at 4:15 pm...so even though I paid for a membership and should have free access to the zoo, I could NOT enter at 4:20! The Giraffes are in terrible conditions, so many exhibits are closed. I paid for my membership this year, but I doubt I will renew. SHAME ON YOU ZOO! read more

First, let me start by saying I absolutely love the zoo. I love zoos in particular the Bronx zoo is a wonderful zoo. I went yesterday and spent five amazing hours. I also have this weird habit of going to zoos whenever I'm out of town, so whenever I'm in another city or another state, I will visit their zoos. If you've not been to the Bronx zoo, go on a Wednesday when entrance to the zoo is free however, you will not see many attractions unless you pay for the upgrade of $17.95 which will get you to see all the attractions or $7.95 each depending on your interest. I have gone to many different zoos in my life but nothing compares to the Bronx zoo at all! the Bronx zoo is a great little getaway from the loud and noisy city. You are surrounded with beautiful tall trees and walking within nature. There is also a waterfall in the zoo that is a beautiful place to take family photos or photos of your children! The animals are usually out and you can see them well, I do recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sneakers because you do walk a lot and there are slight hills on trails. Another great thing is there is a lot of public transportation around the area that makes you get to the destination faster. This is a really nice east coast zoo. They still have some of the original animal houses as well as a bunch of newer buildings and exhibits. Some of the nicer spots are the butterfly garden, the bug carousel, and the gorilla area. Also the Wild Asia Monorail is such a relaxing way to experience that part of the park. It made me a little sleepy though, haha. Also the Dancing Crane cafe has really good food. The bowls are delicious and vegan friendly. My two complaints though are that a lot of the employees just didn't seem very friendly or like they cared much, and also I didn't like how you had to show your ticket at every "attraction." It was a little annoying after a while and seemed like it would be unnecessary if they had more park oversight and better training for their employees. Overall though, a pleasant visit! read more

I haven't been to the Bronx Zoo for probably at least 20 years. They still have free admission on Wednesdays, but you have to reserve ahead of time now due to Covid. You can register for tickets starting the Monday prior at 5 pm, though we logged in a bit before then and it allowed us to purchase tickets. Each person can reserve up to four tickets. There's the free version or you can get the "premium tickets" for $9.95, which allows access to special exhibits and the Bug Carousel (you can ride it more than once!). We went for the 10 am time slot, and this allows you a one hour window for entry (10 to 11). Otherwise, regular admission is $32, I believe. The good thing about coming in March is that you get to avoid all the crowds. The zoo was empty. There were no class trips. The bad thing is that it's still pretty cold, so a lot of the animals are in hiding. But I guess the same can also be said about a hot summer day. It's a pretty exhausting trip since the zoo is huge and you'll be doing a lot of walking. Not to mention driving from NJ is a pain because there is always GWB traffic. It was fun to get to experience the zoo with my nieces for their first time but I probably won't be back anytime soon. Tip - parking is $20. You're also allowed to bring in your own food, so we packed some sandwiches and ate them at the cafe. Saved about $10 per meal! read more

I am a lifelong fan of the Bronx Zoo. I have amazing memories (and photos) of me running around like a wild animal (as is appropriate) here when I was three or four years old, with friends that I still have. That said, I did take a twenty five year hiatus or so.* Now, I've been back a few times in the past year or so, because it turns out it's great for kids. And yes, nowadays I'm chasing the three or four year olds, wishing they wouldn't act like wild animals (never appropriate, just like hypocrisy). Either way, this is a damn good zoo. Far and away the best in New York (although Prospect Park and Central Park also have their merits), and a wonderful place to visit overall. Anyone can enjoy the vast and varied exhibits, and everyone I know seems to have their own favorites. I like just about everything: Congo Gorilla Forest? Hell yes. Butterfly Garden? Maybe, if your kid doesn't hate the heat like mine does. Wild Asia Monorail? Incredible for kids, when it's running during the season (April-October I believe). Madagascar building? A winner, because lemurs (especially if you're fans of the adorable film). Sea Bird Aviary? Incredible, especially if a bird poops on your wife's head just as she was saying something rude to you. Karma is real, everyone. Bug Carousel? My kid's absolute favorite right now, and the dung beetle pushing a seat made of poop must've made the creators so happy when they thought of it. It also makes me happy, just thinking of it now. Peacocks roaming around you while you eat lunch? A lovely and/or terrifying experience, depending on your size in relation to them. Thanks to my two small monsters, I'm sure I'll be here regularly over the next decade or so, and I can't wait to see all the things I haven't yet, and revisit all the things we already love. Also, you might as well get a membership. Amazing place to visit with family. We got to see all types of animals. I would really recommend riding the monorail because you get to see the whole Bronx zoo if you get tired of walking. There were so many trails to take to see each animal. Downside was that they don't have too many food places to eat when you get hungry. But what's good about it was that every Wednesdays, New York residence get in free. Be sure to book tickets in advance in order for entry. Discovered my review is missing! Over 1300 reviews and a historic Zoo and you know I've been here! Even though I grew up in Florida I was coming to NYC and Connecticut in summers. My uncle always brought me to the zoo. I do remember a couple summers when it was very hot outside and I felt sorry for the animals and for myself! My advice is go on a spring or fall day. I'm going to admit I haven't been here in a while. If any of my friends that have children need help chaperoning it's definitely not out of the question that I'd volunteer! I've been to over 10 zoos before, including both San Diego zoos, and I can say without a doubt that the Bronx Zoo is by far the best I have ever been to. The way the zoo is set up makes it easy to navigate and possible to see everything in one day. Most of the animals have more than ample habitats that are beautifully designed and offer plenty of space to roam. The waking paths are cool and nicely shaded. The Bronx River running through the zoo added a dimension of natural beauty that I absolutely adored. We loved the Mouse House and World of Darkness exhibits, both things I have not seen in other zoos. The Bronx Zoo also has the most impressive collection of birds that I've ever seen, all with beautiful exhibits to mimic their natural habitats. I especially loved seeing how much space the African Penguins had-- something that's not very common for them in other institutions. I highly recommend taking the monorail for a break from walking and a chance to see a unique perspective of animals that you can't find elsewhere in the zoo. Our monorail tour guide Sarah was amazing! She has such an enthusiastic, informative way of speaking that I initially thought we were listening to a pre-recorded audio. I loved learning about all the different ways the Bronx Zoo is contributing to animal conservation around the world. Zoo admission is much cheaper if you buy in advance so I highly recommend not waiting until the day of to purchase your tickets if you can avoid it. My one and only complaint with the Bronx Zoo is the food. I understand that caring for these animals comes at a high cost and profit margins are thin, but the food options were abysmal and exorbitantly priced. My family paid $50 for 2 drinks, 2 orders of chicken tenders, and 2 orders of fries. The chicken tenders were not too bad, but the fries were a major disappointment. I recognize those cheap, frozen Sysco fries anywhere because of how awful they taste. For the price we paid, I expected better. I initially wanted to order a pizza but they looked even worse than you'd find in a school lunch cafeteria. Pack your own lunch if you're able to. You'll save a lot of money and it'll probably taste better too. read more

You can't come to ny without going to the Bronx zoo. On Wednesdays you can go for free as long as you book it on Monday. It's just the base ticket so if you want to do the attractions it's $17 per person. Paying for the attractions is worth it to get to some of the main exhibits like the Monorail, nature trek, carousel and a few other exhibits. It's about 6 acres and will take about 5 hours to fully walk through the zoo. Parking is $22 and usually have a lot a lot spots if you get there early. read more

I'm still waiting for leadership to respond to my last message from weeks ago. Apparently, the website that they admitted needed to be reviewed and the training opportunities do not warrant any type of follow up. ***I have since worked my way up the senior leadership chain to the president. A day later, Randi, the director whom told me there were no deficiencies and that she would like to talk to tell me what she thinks is the issue, called and left me a voicemail. Leadership wants me to know that they've received my messages. They are issuing me a refund. The case is now considered closed. I was thanked for my honest feedback. It's ironically that Randi, who was the highest person to talk to and didn't take me seriously was the one to call. Even more that I was never asking for a refund - at one time, just to get a yearly membership and towards the end, to make sure they updated the verbiage so that no one else was mislead. It feels like a payment to shut up and stop bothering them. We will see if the website changes. In the end, hopefully the review serves a purpose to help others. When my daughter and I travel to a new city, if there's a zoo, we visit it. My daughter is nearly 15 now and she couldn't care less about zoos, but it's a tradition at this point. I remembered going to the Bronx Zoo as a child and wanted to go again. I'm so glad we did! Even though it was a hot summer day in NY, the animals didn't disappoint. They were out roaming around and we had a lot of fun seeing them in their habitats. There's a nice tram ride that takes you around a big section of the park where you can see elephants, rhinoceros, and little Przewalski horses. The butterfly exhibit is a MUST. My only irritation with the whole experience was the "flex" ticket pricing. The Bronx Zoo website says adult tickets are $38.20+ which in my opinion is deceiving. We went on a Tuesday, the zoo was not at all busy and our tickets were $49 each. Kind of annoying. As a whole though, I feel like the time spent was worth the cost and my daughter said "That's my favorite zoo we've ever been to." read more

Came here with a friend for the holiday lights, it was amazingly beautiful walking around since the different lights and blowout animals. They even had a carousel ride which I enjoyed very much along with the other families. The holiday lights runs from November to January. read more

I love visiting the zoo and exploring all its exhibits. I usually go on their free day, where you can pay what you wish. However, this is also when many schools plan field trips, so expect larger crowds, especially during the warmer months. Even when I'm not entering the actual zoo, I enjoy walking along the Mitsubishi Riverwalk, which is always a nice experience. This is a great place to visit with friends and family! Favorite Exhibit: One of my favorite spots in the zoo is the penguin exhibit, tucked in a corner of the zoo. Even though the exhibit has a noticeable smell, I still love watching the penguins. Food Options: When it comes to food, I think a salad is the best bet for a decent meal, but chicken tenders with fries is always a solid, classic choice. The house-made chips are also a great option, especially when paired with the wraps at the Dancing Crane Members Area. Unique Features & Fun Moments: I appreciate that the zoo has a nurse on duty--it's a reassuring touch. One of the funniest things to see is a particular gorilla that always sticks its tongue out at visitors. I can't help but wonder if it's a learned behavior or just part of its personality! Events & Special Experiences: The zoo offers a variety of event-related activities through the educational department, including animal meet-and-greets. My daughter has a membership to Bronx zoo, we were supposed to go together with her 4 y old twins. She had an emergency at work and asked us to take kids alone. Zoo employees - 2 young girls (entrance B, Aug 28, around 11:30) told us to pay a full fee. For 4 tickets (2 senior tickets and 2 tickets for 4 y old) we paid $172. We showed them our membership and they were rude and told us to pay full price tickets as our names were not listed on membership. The membership belongs to these 2 kids, we just took them to the zoo instead of our daughter. How long 4 y old can walk? 2 hours the most. So the price per hour was $86. Before I liked to support this zoo, but from now I am not buying any toys there, I will get them on amazon. read more

I hadn't been here since I was in my early 20s so I was excited to come here at 41 and with my son. Out of all the zoos we've been to (we've been to a lot) this ended up being the best. Instead of animals sleeping they were up, happy, and it was perfect weather. I'd gladly come back here, plus the food in the area omg. The Bronx Zoo is always a great time. You now have to reserve tickets on a Monday for a visit on a Wednesday. The good thing about that is since it's technically free on that day, you can upgrade your tickets and pay for more activities available in the zoo that you normally wouldn't because it can be expensive. This allowed us to go see the Gorillaz, visit the children's zoo, and ride the carousel for free along with a couple of other perks. Now as for the food, prices were insane. I spent over sixty dollars for something that was typical fast food and normally I bring my own but I was really treating my girls because they are older now and they don't want homemade snacks and food from home anymore. Also because I never really go to places like the zoo anymore with all three of my children. We all did have a nice time but of course we all began to get tired and were ready to go. They didn't get to do the zip lining because I didn't know you needed to reserve a ticket for that too, and also it was so close to the end of the day they wouldn't let you buy a ticket in person. So in the end we didn't really get to explore everything but you never really can because of the large zoo that it is. Nothing can be completed in one day. 125 staff directing traffic meanwhile the bathrooms are disgusting with no soap, toilet paper, working sinks, lack of hot water, broken air dryers, and the stink of urine will send the animals running. It's been years and the Bronx Zoo has not improved the conditions of its bathrooms from the parking lot to the interior at all. Absolutely disgusting and far from family friendly. Meanwhile staff are tripping over each other in the parking lot directing traffic pointlessly. Asia parking is another fiasco with long wait time for car entry. Do better! read more
