Great tasting sangria
Chris C.

Cafe Brood, on the edge of Borough Market, looked like a good place to grab a late lunch. Like most places in the market, you could see the food being prepared and it looked delicious! The menu and the music being played, appeared to be Spanish. Good. I ordered the grilled lamb, served with saffron rice and salad. The meat was perfectly tender and delicious! The sides were a good complement. This was a good dish! The red sangria, on the other hand, was one of the best I've ever had. It was chilled just right, not too sweet, and had a good portion of fruits in it. Excellent! I really liked this place. Besides the good food, it had a nice ambiance. If there weren't so many other places to explore in Borough Market, this could be my go-to place. Who knows, maybe it still could. I'll be back, even just for the sangria.

Meat Wrap

-Tried a bite of my friend's paella and was so impressed that I went and got my own order, lol. Lots of different meats and lots of flavor. Comes with an amazing hot sauce too. -The loaded potatoes and the wraps were just decent. Lots going on in them but after having tasted the paella first, it just doesn't compare.

Paella cooked up grande style!

I like this cafe because it is outdoors and squared away in a public alley. The vibe is down to earth and the food display is compelling to a point that you look at the variety and you can't deny but drop by to order and lounge! Do get a paella dish and sangrias to share! It was good, but not the tastiest ever! However, the open space, is the winner here!

Steak sandwich!!!

What is better than mulled wine, steamy paella and a hearty steak sandwich on a cold, but very beautiful day? I happened on Cafe Brood after a friend recommended the Paella. I haven't really had great Paella ever, so I was excited to try it. The line at Cafe Brood isn't as long as some of the other lines, and it moves fast even though food is kind of made to order. I liked the paella, especially with fresh lemon squeezed over it and spicy chorizo. I was also surprised that it was so hot, seeing that a huge pan of it sits outside in the cold for display. The steak sandwich was also fantastic! I didn't see anyone else ordering it, haha but it was delicious none the less. It came with roasted bell peppers and onions on a soft baguette. So yummy! There are tables and chairs on the other side of the walkway from the cafe, which makes for great people watching. We had some fresh juice from the market after wards, and it is located very near a bridge where you can take awesome pics with the tower bridge and the Thames.

Somewhat outside Borough Market, it's hard to not be lured by the aroma coming out the Cafe Brood's grill! The menu seems to include Mediterranean and Spanish food, but perhaps the most prominent items are the two massive paella woks on display! Essentially Spanish fried rice, paella tastes as appealing as its saffron-colored appearance! Mixed with some seafood like small mussels, Cafe Brood's paella was decent and the grilled sausage certainly are the cherry on the top. For £7, you get a generous portion of this Spanish national dish! Go ahead and pick up a paella on your way out of the Borough Market, but you probably don't want to eat it on the tube or the bus. The aroma will make you the envy of the crowd!

Visit Sundays when the Borough Market is closed or winding down; Cafe Brood dishes out larger servings of their paella and stew for the same price they'd charge on a bustling Saturday. My personal favorite is the paella with grilled chorizo, and Catalan stew (a tomato-based casserole with albondigas, chorizo bits with lima beans) with mash. At around GBP 7.00 an order, this is certified dude food that doesn't dent the wallet.

Lamb kofte

I always see a long queue for this restaurant in borough market during weekend. So finally try it today between my football match and movie. So disappointed with their food! We order Lamb kofte and chicken skewer. So dry and tasteless! No good middle east sauce, bread and rice are all cold too. The chicken is not even hot when they serve it. Also, it is nice to sit outside oversee the church, but the church bells keep making sound non stop for half an hours during my dinner. So noisy! Will never come again.

Great food and view!

After a few disappointing paellas lately we found this gem and were thrilled! The stew paella combo hit the spot and was really good. Seafood flavor was there but not overpowering. I'd definitely eat there again! : ))

Pleasant Lady Jian Bing Trading Stall - Iberico Pork

I got the pork jian bing which has egg, juice marinated pork, a mix of cilantro/herbs, cucumber, and I think pickled veg, with a fermented bean/chili oil sauce lightly painted on the bing. Service was quick and it's made in front of you. Only difficulty is not dropping it all over the floor as you're stuffing it into your mouth, hah.

What began as a normal afternoon for myself and my friend, Victoria turned into the best foodie day…read moreever. We'd just spent the entire morning working hard on our dissertation for our master's program (woo - the thrill). Typically, we pull up to Ace Hotel, Hoxton Hotel or another cozy cafe in Shoreditch to crank out sentence after sentence. And you guessed it -- we're usually hungry by the day's end. We're also usually broke. Now that we've got the particulars out of the way, this day was no different. Vic and I were in search of some good, fulfilling street food for the low. I was honestly hoping to find something that was less than 10 pounds. So we headed to Soho in London's West end -- an area that neither of us frequents often. Just as I was scrambling along Greek Street to hustle up some content for one of my gigs, we spotted the cutest pink facade with white lettering. Two men stood in front of the narrow window so we couldn't quite tell what it was exactly until the smells swept under my nostrils. The menu at Pleasant Lady Trading is very small which can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you ask. I was extremely hungry at this moment so a small menu was heaven sent. I'm usually pretty indecisive when it comes to food choices so this 4-option menu was perfect. The base of these Chinese-style crepes ( traditionally known as Jian Bing) is the 'original veggie' option to which you can then add meat. I opted for the 'cumin lamb' because lamb is never a bad idea and cumin is one of my favorite spices on planet Earth. I was not wrong, y'all. It was everything. Oh and Victoria ordered the 'chicken miso' and 'twas was delicious, too. Don't let anyone tell you that London street food isn't top-notch. I was already prepared to order pide and lahmacun but the staff proved helpful in knowing how much to order. I ended up getting the non-mince lamb pide, with a side of the pepper relish sauce (ajilik? can't remember what it was called). I saw a man in the back stretch out the dough to make the pide, and slide it into the oven. Then it was brought out fresh from the oven on a wooden cutting board w/a pickled pepper on the side. The pepper relish sauce was garlicky and amazing with the pide. The pide had just the right amount of toppings and flavor. The crust was thin and crisp without being too bready or doughy. The pide looked huge but I inhaled it. Perfectly spiced, right amount of sauce without being soggy, crust was crisp to the last bite, everything about it was delicious and quite affordable. I would definitely come back the next time I'm visiting London.

We ordered the Teriyaki Soya VFish (£8.50) to start, which came with 4 smallish pieces of soya fish, grilled nicely, slightly charred -- very tasty but poor value for what you get. For my main, I got the Curry Laksa (about £15), and added tempeh (£2.50), since it comes with no protein by default (which is odd, since you'd expect at least tofu puffs). The broth was heavy on the citrus and not particularly authentic -- missing that turmeric and chili character you expect in a proper laksa -- and the toppings were kind of sparse. The noodles were also medium-thickness, whereas authentic laksa should be thin vermicelli and/or yellow noodles. Oh well. It was decent for what it is, but ultimately unsatisfying and not good value. Overall, the place is nice, the location is great, and service was super friendly. But food- and value-wise, it was a bit lacking.

Food and drinks: This is a self-serve, all you can eat, with your food kind of place. I had portions of at least 6 different things, plus the gluten free pita. It was so good! I really enjoyed the curry with onions and sweet potato, the stroganoff dish, and the spinach. Not a single thing I didn't like (including the sauces). To drink, you can make a cocktail by adding alcohol to their juice combo. I had the ambrosia (I think!?) with vodka; there were strawberries inside and it was good! Service: The 2 folks there were nice and helpful. They explained how the place works and let us stay long after closing while my friend and I were chatting. Ambiance: When you see the door and peer down the stairs, you have no idea what you're getting into. The place was clean, good was well presented, it has a cozy, loved-in feel. Could accommodate 2 people or a larger group. It was so tasty (and allergen friendly) that I'm thinking of going back tomorrow...
