Tradewinds Marketplace - The end of the TradeWinds era, sigh.

In 1987, when my husband and I arrived in the area, the previous grocery store, standing in the…read moresame location but under a different name and having different owners, actually displayed rotting produce. I just couldn't bring myself to shop there, so I changed to a Hannaford's in Bangor. The original building burned down due to sheer recklessness. Blue Hill peninsula was left without a supermarket, so, in step the Lawrence family. About a year later they had built a new structure in the same place, the one that stands today. TradeWinds selection and quality of food is pretty darned good. The store is lovely, the staff are lovely, and the food quality is very good. TradeWinds may be THE best grocery store/supermarket that I've ever experienced. The owners and the employees are top notch, always very helpful and friendly. The Lawrence family prioritize community, they offer locally grown or made choices, they offer a Maine food section, and they've made this store a shining example of what is possible. Employees need daycare, provided. Employees and others need an exercise spot, provided. Need less expensive fuel for your vehicle, provided. Need a more community oriented pharmacy, they bring in Community Pharmacy! I've never witnessed such active community support in my life! Now to the difficult part. After more than two decades ownership is transitioning. Hannaford, the Maine distributor, which supplies TradeWinds, is the new owner. Hannaford's has been a good company as far as I know. But, like most changes, this is a hard for many of us. Will they continue to offer the unique products that TradeWinds has all these years? Will they keep the lower, more reasonable prices for groceries and fuel that the Lawrence family offered us? Will they allow Community Pharmacy to remain? Will the very cool Beer Cave stay, continuing to offer the amazing Maine and small brew company selections? Will the community awareness and cancer fundraising continue? I hope the answer will be a resounding YES, but we have to wait and see. Even though it's a difficult phase, I have to say thank you to the Lawrences and Hannaford, I'm glad the store has a new Maine-based owner with a decent track record. Thank you Chuck and Belinda Lawrence for all you have given us folks on the Blue Hill Peninsula over these many years! You are very appreciated. I hope you enjoy a well deserved retirement. Thank you also to the lovely staff, I hope the transition goes well for you. I'll see you soon. I love you all for who you are and what you do. THANK YOU!

The Island Market and Supply - All packages delivered to the island end up and TIMS. Why? Because the post office is too small to hold them all.

First off, get all the groceries you think you'll need on the mainland before you take the ferry…read moreover to the island. Second, you know you're going to forget something, so . . . You'll eventually wind up at TIMS. They have all the staples: milk, eggs, cereal, meats, cheeses, eggs, veggies, etc. Be forewarned, 90% of the items don't have prices on them. I guess they want you to have sticker shock when you check out. To be honest, it's more like cardiac arrest depending on how much shopping you need to do. The lady in front of me had a bag of stuff in one hand and a gallon of milk in the other and she walked out $75 lighter than when she entered. Small price to pay I suppose when hunger is your next closest alternative. Overall, if Andy Griffith's Mayberry had a 7-11, TIMS would be the mirror image of it with the added benefit of being able to purchase live seafood. Bonus: They have ice cream. An extra star just for that.

The staff is very friendly and there is a great slow pace and neighborly vibe to the whole place. The lobsters are very good - we went two nights in a row to pick some up during our stay on the island.

I knew by Day 4 of our Mt. Dessert Island vacation, that I'd be lobstered-out and would need fruit…read moreand vegetables. That's why I bookmarked Beech Hill Farms ("BHF") in Yelp. I understood that BHF has a great Farm Market. BHF delivered on that and more. I arrived 10 minutes before BHF opened its gate at 9 am. By 9, five different cars had parked nearby so they could have pick of the Market. The customers mostly seemed like local Mainers, but there were some folks taking pics as well. After I parked, I scurried to the Market and didn't notice the surrounding area yet. The produce looked beautiful with its purples, greens, oranges, reds, yellows and dark blues. I bought fresh wild Maine blueberries, cucumbers, carrots, a multi-colored bell pepper, yellow-orange heirloom tomatoes, an eggplant and mixed salad greens. The blueberries were delicious. I made a great dinner salad with the non-eggplant veggies. I'll grill the eggplant tomorrow. I bought a few other local products. A baguette that was terrific with a local blue cheese I also bought from BHF. Granola I haven't tried yet. And a blueberry pie made by "Gayle Arnold Tucker". I don't know who that is, but in my mind she's a 5th Generation local pie legend. The crust was to-die-for and the blueberry filling had great flavor and consistency. BHF also sold things such as milk, eggs, honey, kimchi, jarred products and beverages. It was a terrific-looking farm Market with great stuff. After my purchases, I explored the grounds. There was a green house with row after row of farm fresh and fragrant garlic and things like starter vegetables. Picnic tables. Fruit trees. And my favorite thing of all - rows of gorgeous wild flowers that were a big draw for bees and . . . the most monarch butterflies I've ever seen in one naturally occurring place. I don't even know how many there were. I saw five at a time when I was looking up. I spent about 15 minutes taking butterfly photos and got some awesome pics. I limited myself to one in the Yelp photos I posted. The flower photo opportunities are also outstanding. I'll put my BHF pics up against my Acadia pics any day. If you like exploring Farmers Markets and/or great photo opps, I guarantee you'll enjoy Beech Hill Farms, at least in August. Five Stars
