Every now and then, it happens. One of your childhood favorite places starts subtly losing its initial appeal as you become older. You notice the staff are not quite the same after the "originals" have either transitioned out or passed on. Maybe a place alters the way one of your favorite meals is prepared, to the point where you no longer enjoy it quite as much as the first time you tasted it. Or maybe I'm just becoming too old and bitter for this. In any case, I must retract a star from what is STILL one of my favorite breakfast spots to dine in. Before carefully explaining why, I want to say upfront that I still adore the hell out of Brooklyn Bagel. The hash and eggs continues to remain a staple dish as my personal favorite breakfast plate. Coffee is still on point....if and whenever the dark roast gets refilled again, that is. Over the last couple years however, I noticed something. Two things, in fact. 1.) The recipes aren't quite as consistent as years past, execution wise. 2.) Their attempts at updating their payment and rewards system is....a bit incomplete, IMHO. First point: depending on who the cook is in back, I guess, sometimes I might end up with overcooked homefries....or homefries that are cooked just well enough to still be considered edible. Sometimes I'll get the right amount of cream cheese on my bagel. Other times I may get so much that I could spread some onto a second bagel entirely. Whatever's happening back there, it's like wildcards. I never know what I may end up with. But since the majority of my breakfast always tastes good, I can't say it ruins the meal or anything. It'd just be nice if they could consistently cook homefries without torching them to the point of being hollowed of all their starchy innards. Second point: did you know BBH recently implemented a rewards program? It's pretty cool, I guess. Just scan the QR code by the cash register to sign up. Then...enter your phone number during check out to receive rewards. Pretty high speed, right? Ya know what would be nice though? If they accepted digital tips as opposed to cash only. See, I really want to tip these folks every time I come here. I can tell they work hard to make breakfast incredibly delectable on a rustic level. Unfortunately, you STILL...as of 2025...cannot tip the restaurant on any digital purchase. You can only leave them cash in the jar. This is annoying for SO many reasons. I'm gonna list two of them. First of all before anyone asks, YES - I always carry some amount of cash on me. Thing is, it's usually to the tune of around $40 or (most times) less. And even that is mainly for situations where, for whatever reason, cash is the only accepted payment at the time. Not to mention, I rarely have any bills smaller than a 20, 10, or a 5. Which brings me to the second problem.. I'd have to either have small bills on me before entry OR....painstakingly ask the cashier to break a 10, 20, or whatever larger bill I happen to have on me. I don't wanna do this because imagine if every other customer did this. The cashier would eventually run out of smaller bills they still need for change. I dunno. It's just weird that they accept debit/credit cards, NFC payments, and have a whole rewards program....but cannot, for the love of humanity, accept digital tips. Someone. Please. Make it make sense. Modernization rants aside, however, I still really do love this place. My review comes from no hate whatsoever; only mild frustration, at worst. And as of now anyway, I'm giving Brooklyn Bagel House in Derry 4 toasty bagels with just the right amount of cream cheese out of 5. read more

I used to live in Derry and loved this place. If I'm in town and they're open, I still go. Love the bagels, but if you've got A Big Day ahead, like helping a friend move or something where you need energy for a long time, go omelette and English muffin. And yes, the owner is surly. That's his vibe. It's not personal, and frankly, he's earned it. Everyone else there is really nice, and he doesn't mean anything by it. Food's worth it. It's a quiet little diner with a quirky aesthetic, good food, great prices. Literally the only "negative" thing I can say is that the tea selection is very utilitarian. Lipton tea bag kinda stuff. Not bad, it'll get you through, but compared to their coffee assortment, it's a bit lackluster. Love this place and I'll see them for breakfast happily again. read more

I had an early weekday appointment in Derry and stopped in for a bagel and a tea. A good selection of bagels offered. I had an Asiago bagel with veg cream cheese and it was nicely toasted and the cheese had nice fresh bits of chopped up veggies. Bagel and large tea $4 and some change. There is an M&M candy theme going on here. Not to sure what to make of it. It is what it is. Service was friendly and pleasant. There is a self service coffee and tea bar here. My family and I ordered a few things here but it was not what we expected at all from a local establishment. The food all was easily something we could have enjoyed from Dunkin Donuts in terms of quality and certainly not worth the price tag. My sandwich was a half-hearted attempt at a Lox Bagel Sandwich which is low on the Lox (bits and pieces in the cream cheese spread only, so no whole pieces), has questionably fresh tomatoes, uses large chunks of white onion (red should be used for flavor and appearance), and overloads it with very salty (cheap) capers. If the toppings weren't bad enough the bagels lack a lot of the chew you need in what is a proper Brooklyn style bagel and taste like a reheated Thomas's bagel from a super market. I'm not insulting Thomas's since I eat them all the time but honestly, I shouldn't pay extra for something sub par. To put it simply as did another reviewer who was actually FROM BROOKLYN, these bagel are no where near what a NY style bagel actually is which is a larger and chewier (parboiled) bagel. The service was also as many reviewers have stated very poor and it seems like a lot of the folks just don't want to be there. No one was friendly or smiled at all, not that I need them to be my friend but it wouldn't kill them to make sure my needs as a CUSTOMER are being met. Just as an example, I don't know if this is policy or not but after ordering various soft drinks and a terrible from concentrate orange juice, I asked for a cup of water and they pointed me to the sink in the back. They basically had me get it myself from what looked like an old utility sink. Also, when we ordered we were not informed how we would be receiving the food and were left standing around at the counter until we were asked to sit down at a table after waiting close to ten minutes for our food. Besides the fact that waiting ten minutes in a deli to get food that should take less than 5 to make seems ridiculous, when we were asked to sit down it was as if it was an inconvenience to them. Like somehow we should know they would take that long and that the tables were set up for their waiting customers instead of being used by people who actually want to eat their food at a table (insert biting sarcasm here). Long story short, go to Panera or Dunkin Donuts and you will be much happier. read more

Tried giving this place another try today. Worse decision of my life. I ordered a French toast bagel with extra cream cheese not toasted. I watched a lady go in the back and pull out a bagel from a giant plastic bag and hand it to a guy who put it in the microwave for a min. Than slabbed a TINY amount of cream cheese onto it. Needless to say it was disgusting and stale and didn't even taste like French toast of any kind. The little bit of cream cheese tasted like dollar store brand and I could barely force down more than 3 bites. The best part was that our to-go bag was packed and ready to go so quickly. It had everything in it - plastic ware, condiments. I just moved here from Brooklyn. These are nothing like Brooklyn bagels. Not even close. They had the texture of cheap hotel breakfast bagels and the flavor of plain dough. I think Brooklyn should sue them for using that name. Also, bc I didn't want my bagel toasted, they microwaved it. I nearly passed out. Great place for breakfast! I've been here many times always takeout and they are friendly and fast. My personal favorite is the western omlette. Only downside is sometimes the homefries are a little to soft for me ( I preffer them sorta crunchy). However it might be due to them being in a to-go container. Other than that food is great! I agree with the review of the guy from Brooklyn. Although his review is a bit of hyperbole, as an ex-New Yorker myself, I find these bagels to be insulting to the name. I've had worse, but to describe or allude to these as New York bagels is a travesty. The everything is so doughy that it tastes like a cheap dinner roll with a hole drilled in it. The toppings are flavorless except for the massive amount of salt that makes you want to drink a gallon of water after eating. While the egg, cheese and bacon were OK, it just wasn't worth eating. Also, my wife's french toast bagel had the cream cheese covered with toppings from my (and maybe others') bagel... Clearly they can't be bothered to clean the cutting board between bagels. read more

The first thing I notice when I go into Brooklyn Bagel is the great smell. Coffee, bacon, and something baked: either the blueberry coffee cake or cinnamon rolls. Whatever it is, it's fantastic and a good way of saying "Good morning." The service is great, and if you're lucky enough to be a regular, you're like family. The bagels themselves are solid. I prefer them as sandwiches myself, but if cream cheese is your route, there are PLENTY of flavor options, and they're all homemade. There's also a good selection of muffins, scones, and homemade coffee cake with this crumbly stuff on top...wicked good! They do full breakfast too. Omelettes with all sorts of stuff in them, pancakes, french toast, or just good ol' "ham & eggs" type stuff. It's a good spot to drop in for lunch too. I like the Reuben sandwiches the most, but they also do plenty of others as well. Good soup selection (also homemade) and they also have a GREAT Pumpkin Chili. Overall, it's a solid place if you're looking for a good breakfast or lunch with no pretense. They have free wi-fi, and during the summer there's outdoor seating. We love Brooklyn Bagel ! We go there almost every weekend. The food is great. Yummy grilled cranberry, nut muffins , quiche, fresh fruit , tuna melts on a bagel and a super large cup of tea are my favorites! The staff is friendly. I have eaten here before, many times. We typically have ordered the Bagel Breakfast Sandwiches to go, and only occasionally ate in. The crowd seems to be made of the same thirty people who lack imagination to go anywhere else (probably the majority of the good reviews here, plus the Ownership and their family rating, THEMSELVES). I have seen the majority of them sitting in, every time I have gone in.. I digress. The last, and I do mean LAST, time I visited, I brought my family. We intended to go to another place in town, but the wait was long there. I wished to have Pancakes on this particular visit. I asked the (normally / always) gruff, standoffish, and couldn't be bothered to care, guy behind the counter; if the pancake mix had, or was in contact with Tree Nuts. He exclaims "it's a batter". No kidding.... I asked again, and clarified the question, as to whether it was a homemade or a boxed batter? He told me boxed, and I reaffirmed with him, my allergy and the death that could result. There was no one in line, and they were not busy. Everyone behind the counter was standing around. Realizing, he was not picking up on my indications, I politely asked him, if he could check the ingredients on the box. He looked at me crossly, and says "why don't you just order something else!". Statement, not a question. As not to spoil the morning for my family, I let them order, and refrained from getting anything myself. I paid $8.50 for 1 Bagel Sandwich and 1 Single Pancake (my Daughter's) and we left. I am not sure, if the name of the establishment has some personal bearing to the owner or not. I certainly hope they do not think acting rude is indicative of Brooklyn, and if so, they need to stop watching bad movies. This attitude is not new, it has always been there. My exception, this time; was due largely to their lack of concern for a customer, and absence of thought to satisfy a concern by simply picking up a box and reading it. My suggestions; skip this place, go to Panera, Mary Ann's, Mc Donald's, Dunkins, Burger King, Taco Bell, a gas station sandwich cooler. If they want to rude themselves out of business, help them out. Anyone can fry an egg, and put it on a Finagel a Bagel, then charge $6 for it! I wish only one thing.... I could give it NO STARS, as to drive the point home. read more

I have been here a few times. The guy behind the counter is not friendly to say the least. I feel very uncomfortable placing my order. The breakfast sandwiches are ok. Sometimes the bagels are stale and flavorless. Recently they starting posting no outside drinks allowed? If I prefer a Starbucks coffee on my way to grab a sandwich, this place feels your not welcome. Very odd way to do business. Needless to say, they have lost mine.
