The Brooklyn Bridge was opened for use on May 24, 1883. The opening ceremony was attended by several thousand people and many ships were present in the East Bay for the occasion. President Chester A. Arthur andMayor Franklin Edson crossed the bridge to celebratory cannon fire and were greeted by Brooklyn Mayor Seth Lowwhen they reached the Brooklyn-side tower. Arthur shook hands with Washington Roebling at the latter's home, after the ceremony. Roebling was unable to attend the ceremony (and in fact rarely visited the site again), but held a celebratory banquet at his house on the day of the bridge opening. Further festivity included the performance of a band, gunfire from ships, and a fireworks display. On that first day, a total of 1,800 vehicles and 150,300 people crossed what was then the only land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Emily Warren Roebling was the first to cross the bridge. The bridge's main span over the East River is 1,595 feet 6 inches (486.3 m). The bridge cost $15.5 million[clarification needed] to build and an estimated number of 27 people died during its construction. On May 30, 1883, six days after the opening, a rumor that the Bridge was going to collapse caused a stampede, which was responsible for at least twelve people being crushed and killed.On May 17, 1884, P. T. Barnum helped to squelch doubts about the bridge's stability--while publicizing his famous circus--when one of his most famous attractions, Jumbo, led a parade of 21 elephants over the Brooklyn Bridge. At the time it opened, and for several years, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world--50% longer than any previously built--and it has become a treasured landmark. Since the 1980s, it has been floodlit at night to highlight its architectural features. The architectural style is neo-Gothic, with characteristic pointed arches above the passageways through the stone towers. The paint scheme of the bridge is "Brooklyn Bridge Tan" and "Silver", although it has been argued that the original paint was "Rawlins Red".[29] At the time the bridge was built, the aerodynamics of bridge building had not been worked out. Bridges were not tested in wind tunnels until the 1950s, well after the collapse of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge(Galloping Gertie) in 1940. It is therefore fortunate that the open truss structure supporting the deck is by its nature less subject to aerodynamic problems. Roebling designed a bridge and truss system that was six times as strong as he thought it needed to be. Because of this, the Brooklyn Bridge is still standing when many of the bridges built around the same time have vanished into history and been replaced. This is also in spite of the substitution of inferior quality wire in the cabling supplied by the contractor J. Lloyd Haigh--by the time it was discovered, it was too late to replace the cabling that had already been constructed. Roebling determined that the poorer wire would leave the bridge four rather than six times as strong necessary, so it was eventually allowed to stand, with the addition of 250 cables. read more

A gem of the New York area, how does one truly enjoy this piece of architecture? Well I would say it is best to visit this bridge on a mild summer's day because since you are over a river you are definitely exposed to the elements when you are on this bridge. Foot traffic can more intense than what is going on with the vehicles below on the main transportation area of the bridge. If this is your first time visiting this landmark follow the markings of the bridge path to the "T", this is because bikers used to people not following the rules are not the happiest when people get in bike lanes versus the walking lane. This also applies if you're a runner on the bridge (as I've been many times and gotten some yells and honks from bicyclist whizzing by). Also make sure you have the appropriate footwear walking this bridge since it is angled so wearing high heels is definitely not recommended. Travelling from one side to the other is about a mile, so make sure you are hydrated enough as well as you have eaten enough before the travel so you don't end up paying hiked up prices for water and such on the bridge itself by questionable merchants. My favorite moment was on a hot summer day and on one end of the bridge a woman was selling cut mangos on a stick. So delicious and refreshing. The best snack ever. read more

Have you ever rode your bike across the Brooklyn Bridge? Well, fill up your tires and go!!!!!! I lived in the New York area forever and always wanted too. I had the craving for a bike ride into my second favorite borough and made my way across. I was captivated by the view. OMG! I stood there and stared for a good 15 minutes before realizing I was in the bike lane and was holding up the flow. My bad! O.k. I then took a look at where I was and saw plaques of the landscape of all the buildings before me and I became a tourist minus the camera for the next 1/2 hour looking and matching the buildings to the plaque. Hilarious! Well then I continued my bike ride and stopped by the brooklyn bridge park to check things out and go another awesome view of the city. If you have never visited what New York has to offer.... The bridge bike path, the statue of liberty, the empire state building, take a ride on the water taxi, you should try it. You will have a new love for the city you live in. If you don't then what good is it? Yeah, the food is great, the shopping is second to none, and the city is exciting place too live but there is a reason why the tourists flock here. Try being a tourist for a weekend. This place brings me peace and serenity, even with the clamoring noises of bells on bikes warning walkers to move out of the way, screaming and adoring fans of the bridge and the sights to behold, and the traffic just a mere feet below of motor vehicles coming and going. I enjoy walking this bridge because it puts me in a place of love, peace, and happiness. You better stay in the walking lane on the bridge or you will get smashed by oncoming bicycles, and stop at the top of the bridge to take in the view. Bring water, otherwise you will need to buy some from a vendor because you will be super thirsty. Make sure when you go over the bridge that you head off to the right first into Brooklyn Heights and check out some of the amazing old buildings and homes with a view right across the East River of the Downtown skyline. Be sure to bring a lock as well as there are places on the bridge where you can place a lock and write an inscription. You must do this (even in Winter) if you are in the city. I've walked the bridge a couple of times - during the day and at night - and it's always an awesome experience. Most recently, we walked from the Brooklyn side, and there were signs leading us from the park with the amazing view of Manhattan through town to find the steps to the bridge. The bridge itself is divided into a bicycle and pedestrian side so be sure to stick to your side since cyclists do rave down the bridge! Along the bridge, take time to appreciate the architecture and construction (I'm an engineer, haha), and there are views of the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and other bridges along the river. What an awesome piece of architecture. Easy to ride the subway to the Brooklyn side and walk back over. In the middle there is an awesome breeze. Lots of photo ops with the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and more. You can even buy drinks and other stuff in the middle. Highly recommended to walk over! I have walked over the bridge so many times I lost count...but it's only recently i actually stopped to take pics and it's only because my cousin came here on vacation. The view of Brooklyn to Manhattan is breathe taking. You see the beauty that most New Yorkers don't ever stop to enjoy. I recommend you go as early as possible to avoid crowds. We got there and the vendors had just arrived to set up. We crossed easy enough and took pictures. There were a few other parties and everyone was stopping along the way for photos. Nothing too serious and people were courteous to wait until the photo was taken or just hurriedly passed to keep going. I must say though there was lot of trash along the bridge. There are trash cans available but these are flimsy open metal bins with plastic bags that had been blown by wind. We crossed the bridge in little over an hour. That includes taking ample amount of pictures and taking in the view from all sides. read more

Trotzdem sollte man sich dieses Bauwerk mal von der Nähe anschauen - nicht nur mit 'nem Taxi drüber bügeln. Von unten hat man besonders schöne Ansichten - da sieht man Arbeiter in der Brückenkonstruktion klettern die versuchen gegen den Rost anzukämpfen oder auch Raubvögel die auf unachtsame Tauben warten. My husband and I love to walk, and this has to be one of the most satisfying walks one can take in the city. The Brooklyn Bridge is such an icon of the city, and the fact that you can walk across it only adds to the appeal. It also does not hurt that Grimaldi's is just on the other side in Brooklyn. The problem with that is it negates the calories burned while crossing the bridge in the first place! As others have said, it can get packed with tourists during the daytime hours. In the summertime this can be an annoyance, but in the winter time the extra body heat helps! read more

I was here during my trip to NYC back in May and we were coming from Wall St. about a mile away. Upon entering, the place was packed with vendors. Water one dollar, people selling you pictures, so much NYC tourist vendors. Ngl, a lot of the stuff you can buy them cheaper here than at the ordinary gift shops you find around the city. We didn't even make it all the way across because it was getting dark. We got our pictures and left. So why the 3 stars? Because of the vendors and so many people. If you come earlier in the day, you'd probably find less people. read more

An easy way to connect better to the history of the city, and feel like a part of the city. Visiting the Brooklyn Bridge, which is the bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn, is a must see spot for those in the city. Had a good time walking across this bridge.
