No thank you. I'll stick with the Chinatown in Manhattan. I see I'm in the minority here as far as reviews, but a recent visit to Brooklyn Chinatown left much to be desired. I think the last time I visited was 7 years ago not to mention years before that. Back then, I enjoyed a couple restaurants and shopping at the Hong Kong market. Upon this visit, we couldn't navigate through the crowds, visible garbage piled high on every corner and strewn everywhere, off putting strong stench of seafood, near miss falling on my face due to women aggressively rolling their wagons and more. I adore Chinese food and dumplings but we couldn't find one place that spoke to us while walking along 8th Avenue from the N train stop on 63rd down to 52nd Street. A pressing question was "why were so many people selling hard shell crabs on every block"? Sometimes two people per block and not fish markets either. Where do all these crabs come from? I love crabs but I've experienced food poisoning too many times. A hard pass for me. Next stop, Canal Street read more

I am in Brooklyn Chinatown all the time. ALL.THE.TIME. Want to meet up with me? I'm more than likely here, honestly. Just keep your eyes peeled for an Italian who is walking like she knows where she's going; because I do know where I'm going! I love to just walk around here without an actual purpose. I love all the chaos, smells, colors, and sounds of it all. There's something about easily getting lost in the crowd that I find appealing. It's always unexpected fun whenever I'm in Chinatown. I am usually looked at with much suspicion, but once the locals see I can use chopsticks and eat chicken feet, I am always embraced with happy arms. The only downside here is the fish markets in the summer. There is no other smell like it on EARTH and it is AWFUL. But, I love seeing all the fresh catches and what people are buying. I always get my fruit here because it's so sweet and the prices can't be beat. They are worth the haggle, trust me. Can't walking Brooklyn Chinatown end to end without eating or drinking something. I love bubble tea. I love almond tea. I love dumplings. Fried or boiled. I love the little dim sum cooked meals from the bakery. I love taro buns. I love coming here for Chinese New Year just to take pictures and watch the kids run around and smile. There's truly no place I'd rather be. read more

I love this part of Brooklyn. People will run you down if you're going too slow without so much as a backwards glance. (Well, I mean, not anymore- people are attempting social distancing and much better with masks as they should be worn than other parts of the city... like the West Village...) Large variety of shops and stalls to get all kinds of shopping done. I mostly get food. Okay, always get food. I make it a rule to always get one thing I have no idea what it is and learn about it. Great prices, especially if you're used to the rest of the city. Got 9 blue crabs for dinner today for $ 15- good, heavy crabs too. It does pay to shop around for produce and meat- different vendors can have drastically different prices and quality. Is it "as good as" Manhattan's Chinatown? It often represents different parts of and cultures within China, so it's hard to/not fair to compare. But it's a stop away on the N for me, so, I'll keep coming here for my fresh groceries! Have you ever seen such humanity and life?? Well come to this neck of the woods and see it all.. Live shrimp, turtles which I think is illegal. Fruit up the ying yang u don't have to wait for the farmers market to come in season. They have it all here except fast food I wonder why?? I never met a ethnic group that can reinvent the wheel on a regular basis and make the $$$. Hmmmm I feel like a giant when I stroll down the avenue 6'2 is tall in Chinatown. Food food food and so fresh?? Come early and stay late and the price is rite. Oh if you like to gamble they have all the buses leaving at different locations. I went to Mohegan Sun for like $10 dollars round trip in front of the bar on 60th and 8th. I dont gamble went to see tournament/ But they have buses early in the morning and also late in evening. read more

Begins around 65th Street and ends around 42nd with upper range at 9th Ave and lower at 7th with straggling businesses a few blocks in either direction of that square. The heart of this madness is at 8th and 59th or around there. All cash businesses here so keep that in mind. Positives: There is a large assortment of Vietnamese, malaysian, Japanese, various regional specialty restaurants from China, dim sum, bbq, fresh veggies, dried ingredients and cured products of all different kinds, bakeries, butchers, tofu shops etc.. You get the picture. Sunset Park feels like a different country, as if a few blocks of Asia were somehow transported through space-time and dropped in the south of Brooklyn. You could spend a lot of time here and only scratch the surface. Negatives : The density of this place and the affordable prices accommodating this old world open air market draws crowds of large sizes, especially during weekends and holidays. Come during Chinese new year and it's impossible to walk down the block in less than ten minutes. Be patient and be careful of where you step, the streets can be dirty and slippery at times. I love this place and I hate this place. Ultimately it is what a friend of mine described as real New York, old New York. This is New York City with character. It's in your face assaulting your senses and it will give you a healthy dose of culture shock if you're not used to the shoving, the loud talking, hawking, the laughing, the friendliness of a community that seems to have been transported from another world to brooklyn where they picked up immediately where they left off. read more

Ok so I'm a long-time resident of Brooklyn's Chinatown and honestly I never knew it was considered Chinatown until now.. but I'll try my best to describe what this Chinatown is. This Chinatown is cluttered and I mean CLUTTERED with street vendors and markets full of fruits, fishes, dry herbs, shoes, cheap fast fashion clothing, even more! They have their own spark of uniqueness, it has it's own rural feeling despite it being urban personally. In the early morning it'll feel like a walk in a ghost town with a breeze of cold air with some cars, and buses running here and there, then in late morning to the rest of the day it just gets crowded and busy from there. Tons of foreigners from China yelling out their products, spitting onto the ground, children going haywire, you get used to it if you live very close to this Chinatown. But as a tourist it gets to you one way or more which is understandable, this place isn't known for etiquette or manners, they're known for being bustling and full of markets that you can visit and check out a sample of what China would be since it has herbs, exotic fruits, and spices you wouldn't think exist (Durian, Goju berries, dried seahorses, dried and salted fish, Starfruit, Dragon's Eye, Lychee) Food here ranges from "Oh wow this looks like dung but tastes amazing" or "Oh wow this looks like dung and tastes like dung" so it's really hit or miss, unless if we're speaking about bakeries then they're mostly a hit as it's delectable but has quite a price too (looking at you Tous Le Jours, Paris Baguette, and Xin Fa) If you're going to Brooklyn's Chinatown for jewelry shopping though then I can't say much except for jadeite jade here is extensive with my personal opinion, not the greatest quality for the price tag (you're alot better of going to the Manhattan part of Chinatown) Overall for someone like me who lives close to Chinatown and is Asian-American, it hits close to what China is with it's urban setting with a mix of rural elements here and there. Food is ok (you can get better at 7th Avenue and 5th Avenue in my opinion), residents who live there can range from no etiquette of all ages to ok mannered. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this Chinatown. Love because it's my peoples and I don't have to travel to Manhattan/Queen to go shopping in a Chinatown. Hate because it's soooo damn crowded at times. You'll have people walking in front of you but then abruptly stop to see what fruits and veggies are on sale. I love how it's slowly expanding, although some people may see that as a negative. Back when I first moved in Brooklyn, it started from 52nd/53rd street up to 59th/60th street...I think, we never really walked up that far because we bought everything we needed. Now, it starts in the 40s and goes up to 65th street... You'll definitely need patience while here....with the amount of people walking and their leisurely walking pace.... read more

Worth the trek at least once from Manhattan to check it out. Loved the food and thought it as a nice departure from Manhattan's Chinatown. Prevailing language in Brooklyn Chinatown is mandarin, while in Manhattan's Chinatown it's Chinese. read more

the area known as the brooklyn chinatown is growing and growing with not end in sight. it will be as popular as the lower manhattan chinatown soon cause brooklyn is much bigger size wise. the boom in population started in the mid to late 90s to early 2000ish first in the 4th and 5th ave area in the 50 and 60th st area and now has expanded to dyker heights , bay ridge, benson hurst area and beyond. the two child per couple rule does not apply here like in china so it's causing the population to explode . overall chinese folks are hard working people who have opened plenty of businesses in brooklyn to cater to their own as well as the gringos. it's the american dream cause back home in china life is hard with a government that has been harsh to it's almost 2 billion people. overall the chinese people have made a good life in brooklyn for themselves and families , good bless america. read more
