It was wonderful that the ferry stopped here as well. Too bad the last one out was too early for our festival since it ends at 9:30pm. This is a just a review for the coffee shop within the We Work building by the ferry. Prices are very reasonable and they have amazing snacks. But I really just wanted to shout out about the amazing manager who always goes out of her way to make me feel welcome, and even gave me some extra ice for an inflamed foot. They open around 7.30am, but if you're there earlier she will help you out! Really lovely. The navy yard itself has some serious issues- notable seating by the ferry itself- the scaffolding has been up for other a year, making the travel time from a seat to the ferry a lot longer and harder for anyone with mobility issues. I really hoped they would address this- but many emails later (no one responded except the ferry company to say it's not their property and so they can't add seats) no one actually cares to make this public space accessible, which is a shame. This goes across the whole navy yard. The winery is 'accessible' : it only has 10 stairs and if you need an elevator for the other 5 flights you have to book days in advance to use their elevator. I went to an event called Summer Fest on Saturday in building #77. I really enjoyed myself tasting all of the different drinks vendors brought out. They had like 3 food trucks and I purchased from 2. They had a DJ and just a slew of ppl walk-in around mingling with friends enjoying themselves. Such a vibe I haven't been here since last summer definitely will return for any event. Beautiful, clean safe day drinking. The building itself was beautiful as well. Had public restrooms and I think rented restaurants space. Brooklyn Gem definitely. read more

I'm bouncing off Kenny C's "3-star" review (his and this one are the only actual reviews of Navy Yard, as opposed to an event held there). Navy Yard is a tragic model of hostile architecture. It should be an Atlantic Terminal style welcoming scene and navigation hub. The ferry stop connects to the reasonably frequent B67 to downtown Brooklyn and various shuttles replicate some of that route as well as two City Bike stations near the ferry. Cafe 72 has a creative, tasty, reasonably priced lunch special daily, and is a nice place to work with good wifi. But as if a contest was held by an urban design program to create the most hostile experience possible, these and other cool assets are stamped with a figurative "do not enter!" sign. You pass through two guard stations to get to the 1 block away B67 from the ferry (or from bus to ferry). Three security checkpoints to get from the ferry to a CitiBike, to Flushing Avenue. Returning from downtown Bk to the ferry: 1 checkpoint to return CitiBike, 1 checkpoint on the sidewalk to the ferry, and 1 more checkpoint to enter the ferry. In a 3 block distance. People who look like techies usually walk through these checkpoints (although I was stopped and questioned once about what was I doing here and where was I going, an older white man on a CityBike). But I have seen Latinas who are dressed like maintenance workers stopped at them and required to show ID to continue. Really!? to walk from the public ferry to a public city bus station? There is a larger food court across a driveway from the ferry building which you can enter, but not leave if you are coming from the ferry. Today the security team shut down the checkpoint that city busses go through and only allowed busses to enter after a security operative opened the gate manually, creating gridlock. The answer is NOT to avoid this vital transport hub. I don't get it: if this is private property why are there MTA bus stops, a ferry stop, and CitiBike Stations? The answer is to remove all that, put up those signs you see on nearly every big building in Manhattan about how this area is open to the public, no questions asked, no gauntlet of security checkpoints. read more

I do a lot of business in the Brooklyn Navy Yard aka bny I love the history, as a matter of fact I was saddened to see the old admirals row mansions come down this past week. I know it is for the better but its sad none the less. Parking is simple, security is competent. There is now a museum, a farm and a whiskey distillery (kings county) Kings county distillery is a treat, great education and of course samples. They also sell the whiskey on site. Building numbers can be confusing however security will give you a map. read more

The Navy Yard is a strange place. It feels like a gated community, like a government research facility. The dedicated buses and "no trespassing" signs add to the mystique. Of course, since it was/is a loading dock, it's not very pedestrian friendly. There's only one entrance on the Flushing Ave side, so you may end up backtracking to get to the building you're looking for. The fences are super beat up and a lot of the roads were also under construction, so it really has that old school Brooklyn feel. read more

I am pretty much over you. Some issues : - The Brooklyn Navy Yard is (surprise!) on the water. Places on the water usually experience a lot of wind. So why is it that there is so much fucking GRAVEL and TRASH and SAND...and very little asphalt around the building where I work? I mean really. I don't want to have to wear protective goggles when I try to get the mail. - WHY doesn't the shuttle go to the train stations more frequently, and WHY isn't there a shuttle to the G train? Seriously guyz, this has to be rectified. I have to walk for 20 minutes to get to MY train. - WHEN IT SNOWS, YOU SHOULD REALLY MAKE SURE THERE ARE PATHS CLEARED TO THE ENTRANCES TO THE NAVY YARD. This place was just.....cool. No it's not close to anything really, but if you ever, ever, find yourself in or around the yard, please, take some time to stroll around, get lost in the industrial coast. There's even a bar, right outside the washington ave. entrance by Flushing, that looks straight out of 1978, and decidedly not New York-like. There's a Chinese take out place outside as well, for lunch i guess. You walk inside, and basically it's just building after building of unmarked brick and sheet metal and the coast. It'd be an absolutely terrific place to film, and they even have a studio, Steiner Studios, with five or six huge stages. I want to come back and really get lost here; the fear and adrenaline of really not knowing your orientation or exactly where you are in such a massive yard like this (there has got to be hundreds of buildings with only a few entrances/exits) would be really, really tantalizing. It's one of those places where you go and you're like "this is massive, this is industrial, this is mechanical, this is an ENVIRONMENT". And yet, at the same time, it's so old, with the brick wall encasing it, that it's got that feel of 1900 industry, with 1970s ships, and the sheen of metal and sounds of brute force machines working during the day, and creaking at night. read more

Outside the Brooklyn yard looks very industrial. There is a ferry that just started that will take you to Manhattan. Wegmans is also in that complex. You will need an I'd to enter the facility as there are guard shacks at different points. read more

This is truly a hidden gem - and literally.. hidden. It's a pretty far walk off public transportation and as you're walking there, there's not a whole lot going on around you. This museum is one of the most innovative and design forward I've ever seen. It depicts the history of the Navy Yard in the most creative way. I highly recommend coming here if you're at all interesting in learning about the history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Great cafe on the third floor serving up coffee and lunch items. read more

I did not come here on my own volition. I did not decide to take the Brooklyn Historical Society Bus Tour (but it sounds cool). I came here to find my car. I made the terrible mistake of parking my car on Nostrand Ave and didn't bother to read the no standing (4PM - 7PM) sign. So when I came back in the evening to find my car, it was gone! After calling 311, and looking on the web, I determined that my car was temporarily being sheltered at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. My wonderful BF and I braved the arctic cold and went to retrieve it. When we walked up to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, it looked quite new and organized. The NYPD was housed in a nice building with glass window panels. I guess this is what they do with my impound fee. In any case, the lady at the counter was nice to me. I had to retrieve some documents from the car, and there is a shuttle van that takes you to your car and back to the station. Very organized, I say. She asked for the registration and insurance info. I didn't have my insurance info, but she still let me get by. I am grateful for her being so kind to me. In any case, the fee was $185 and on top of that, I got a no standing ticket for $115. Wow, that was an expensive lesson. Merry X-mas from nyc.gov!! read more

I tag along often for rides through Brooklyn & Manhattan in my boyfriend's oyster van. We have been stopping here a lot lately to get oysters from the fish transfer. This place is huge, cool and the view is beautiful! Right on the water it has killer views of the city.. I will have to come here with my camera sometime. I also saw that you can rent Citi bikes, which is a great idea because this place is huge. A cool place to check out at least once. read more

There are really good things happening at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. People with a plan are taking the storied industrial space and turning the 300-plus acre area into a 21st century hub. My family and I did the 2-hour tour and really enjoyed it. The tour guide did a perfect job. He regaled us with the ground's history, shuffled us around the massive space, and somehow maintained his easy going Brooklyn nature the whole time. For NY history buffs this place is a great place to come and check out. read more
