The moment I walked in the Alger House, I immediately knew I had to book it. It is bigger than it looks in pictures and the decor is unique and antique. We recently got married there (8/6/16) and everyone was raving about what a great time they had. We decided to have a Gastby/Speakeasy style wedding in black and gold, and it worked perfectly with the venue. The statues and stained glass windows were absolutely stunning as a focal point for the ceremony. My favourite part was the upstairs garden room where the bridal party got ready. Everyone was snapping pictures in the bathroom as it looks like it is straight out of a magazine. Monika was our coordinator. She was very insightful, incredibly patient and accommodating, and did not hesitate to go out of her way to ensure our wedding was exactly what we had envisioned. Her experience in coordinating weddings is apparent from the get go and she wasn't shy to make suggestions and/or point out issues that may interrupt or make the flow of the wedding unnecessarily awkward. I ended up doing all the decor/flowers myself (we had a small budget wedding with 90 people) and Monika went out of her way to allow us to come in the day before (lucky for us they were not booked that day) to set everything up and rehearse. The best part about our wedding was that we came in pretty much on our budget (16,000ish). I had been very frustrated and upset with how expensive other venues were (we had checked out one in Brooklyn that was just a warehouse for 11,000- and that DID NOT include silverware/catering/alcohol- just the shell!). I finally came across Alger House by searching "inexpensive wedding venue NYC" and as soon as I saw it I had a great feeling. What blew my mind was that food, alcohol, linens, tables etc. was all INCLUDED! When I got the final bill from Monika I actually did a happy dance! I called my husband so excited that it was less than what I was expecting! Though it was inexpensive do not be fooled- it was the BEST SERVICE. Monika did the greatest job helping us coordinate our wedding. Because of her experience, our wedding was more than we could have hoped it could be. She was on top of everything- replying to emails within minutes, meeting with me several times to answer questions going above and beyond to make sure I had a good experience. On the day of the wedding as we were being reintroduced to the reception as husband and wife (after a swift conversion of the space-10 mins) the DJ played our first dance song. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Monika scoot over to the DJ and explain that it was our first dance song and the music quickly changed. She was ON IT. We would not hesitate to recommend the Alger House for a beautiful, intimate wedding and particularly Monika. We don't think our vision would have been possible without her. read more

Nice looking venue nestled in the West Village, BUT party planners BEWARE: this property has a significant sound restriction monitored by a weird triangular sound-level monitoring device. As a result, you cannot produce music loud enough to inspire a great dance party. Bass sounds travel far and hit the decibel limits extremely quickly. Your dance party will be too quiet (and suffer because of it!) The entire time the owner was rude and acted annoyed that my band was performing at my family's event there. At one point he ran up to us and yelled, "Why does your drummer have to play so loud?! All I hear is boom! boom! boom! boom! That is not music!" I could not believe this was coming out of his mouth, after he had accepted thousands of dollars from my family for the rental of his space. Can't stress enough that this is a really big deal, and should be a total dealbreaker for party planners and future brides. Bass travels more than you think. Unless you're OK with quiet slow dancing all night, please take this advice seriously - for the sake of your dance party! I can understand a strict cutoff time (like 10 or 11PM) due to city noise ordinances, but an overly conservative decibel limit at a rented event space is a huge pet peeve of mine. You should always let your dance party be all it can be! read more

We recently had our wedding here at The Algers House. The place is absolutely beautiful! When you are inside, you feel like you're transformed to a totally different era. We worked with Monika. Great historical and charming venue at an affordable price located on a quaint little street in the West Village

I inquired last week for one of our holiday parties and Sam, who works for Algerhouse, took down our info, dates, etc. and told me he'll get back to me the next day. Well, he didn't. So I called after a couple of days to check if he was able to come up with a proposal or quotation but when he answered the phone it seemed like I was BOTHERING him. I felt like he didn't want the business at ALL. He said he had a lot of phones ringing, he had to take care of other things. Beautiful space, delicious food, professional, friendly and accommodating staff, and reasonable pricing - all in an easily-accessible location on a quiet charming street in the West Village. We held our smallish (70 guest) wedding here on a Sunday afternoon, and everything went just perfectly. All of our guests were impressed with the physical space, the delicious hors d'oeuvres and entrees, and the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. Monika was the site coordinator we worked with throughout the entire planning process and through the day of the event, and she was always helpful in outlining our options, providing direction and suggestions where needed, and in responding promptly and efficiently to email inquiries. But everyone we dealt with at Alger House was helpful friendly and accommodating -- from Sam, the owner, to the servers at our event, to the other Alger House staff we dealt with during the rehearsal and event itself. I must admit to a bit of initial skepticism about how seamlessly the staff would be able to convert the space from the ceremony setup to the dining setup, but they were able to do it quickly and unobtrusively during the cocktail hour, and it worked flawlessly. I can't imagine having had our ceremony and reception anywhere else; we just got married last Sunday and are actually already thinking about how great it would be to have our 5-year anniversary party there! If you are planning a wedding for 100 guests or fewer, I would strongly recommend Alger House. Reviewing Alger as a wedding attendee - not a client. As someone who works in event management, I feel qualified to say the team at Alger has their act together. We were greeted at street level and whisked upstairs seamlessly. Guests were met with drinks before the ceremony started. The wedding I attended had about 75 guests total and it was the perfect amount of space, due to how swiftly and attentively the staff transitioned the space from ceremony to drinks/canapé to dinner/dance floor. The food was very good and our glasses were never empty. Not sure what the space costs, but they certainly delivered a successful night for the bride and groom. read more

I had my wedding at Alger House in September and could not speak better about the place. Monika helped us throughout the planning process and was always available and extremely accommodating. My wedding day was stress free because I knew that she was overseeing every detail. The place itself is gorgeous and warm. We had about 110 people and I was concerned that it would be too tight but it was intimate without being crowded (we had a cocktail reception so we only had seating for about 2/3 of the group). The food was delicious and the service was amazing! I had two logistical concerns with the place. First, there were only two bathrooms and I didn't want people to be standing in line all night. At one point there were a few people waiting and someone informed them that there was another bathroom upstairs. My second concern was how they would turn the room over from the ceremony to the reception without disturbing the party. They turned the room over so quickly I barely noticed they were doing it. I was very impressed! I felt like the staff went out of their way to accommodate us and make our special day completely stress free. And the price can't be beat! They also have a sister location that is gorgeous and a little bigger if the style of the Alger House is not what you're looking for. read more

We had our wedding at the Alger House 3 weeks ago and were delighted with the whole experience. Jeno, our catering manager, is hands down the most responsive vendor we encountered with throughout our year-long planning process. (I don't think I ever sent a single email to which he didn't respond in 5 minutes or less.) Jeno's advice was always helpful and to-the-point-- he is a real expert and isn't out to upsell you on anything. On the day of the wedding, Jeno helped make sure everything ran smoothly, from the processional, to the flipping of the space, to the champagne toast and beyond. The space and quality of the food are a great value for the money, maybe even the best in the city for couples who are looking for more of an an all-inclusive venue for an intimate event. We received so many compliments from our guests on how lovely the venue was, and we also heard rave reviews about the hors d'oeuvres and food stations we chose! (We never doubted that the food would be great, though-- prior to the wedding we attended a complimentary tasting at the Manhattan Penthouse and were blown away by everything we tried.) As cocktail hour and the beginning of dinner evolved into a dance party, there was plenty of space for our 65 guests out on the dance floor, and we could have definitely accommodated far more people. It is still hard to believe that we were able to have such an elegant event on our decidedly not-huge budget. The venue itself is so beautiful, I didn't really need to do much additional decorating. The art and plants add wonderful touches. The staff did an awesome job at turning the ceremony area into the reception, and my guests had nothing but great things to say as well. Married at Alger House in September '11. It was a fantastic party, due in no small part to the skills and attention of the amazing and wonderful manager, Jeno Steiner. From the beginning, showing us the party space, through the planning process in the middle, to the event itself at the end (He even helped me bustle my dress! Don't worry, it was an outside button!), Jeno helped us plan the perfect wedding. We had 80 people and the size was just right. We had the ceremony there as well, then they flipped the tables for a seated dinner reception and dancing. The dancing space was perfect--we just hooked up an ipod system--and we even fit in a photobooth (go see my review for SweetBooths--awesome!). Jeno recommended Ariston for the flowers (go see my review for Ariston--they were great!) In terms of meal specifics, I specifically heard rave reviews about the cocktails and the appetizers and the brownie things they served along with our wedding cakes. We brought in our own wine but hard liquor was included and everybody had as much as they wanted. Alger House is a beautiful venue for a small, intimate wedding! I was recently in a wedding here, and this venue is amazing. Once you step inside, you forget that you are in the middle of New York City. The entire venue is gorgeously decorated. The upstairs has a spacious room and spacious bathroom - perfect for the wedding party to get ready. We also used it for the ketubah signing ceremony. The staircase is a dream for any photographer, since you can get lovely photos of the wedding party coming downstairs and then you can take photos of the guests from the second level. On the main level, the staff set up for the ceremony and had the tables set up and ready on the side. After the ceremony, we had the cocktail hour at the bar while the staff moved the tables to set up for dinner. The DJ was also able to set up behind a screen across from the bar. The bartenders were fabulous. We also had room for a string quartet at the base of the stairs. The space was very well laid out. Gino was the event coordinator on the day of the event and he made sure that we started on time and in place!! I highly recommend this venue for anyone hosting a small, intimate wedding!! read more

I recently had my wedding at The Alger House, and I must say, I loved this choice. The Alger House has something special about it where it is not just a catering hall that looks like every other one. It's a converted carriage house and has a super unique quality to it. Jeno was who we worked with and he was on point, he replied to every email and within minutes, from email one. He had answers to every question and was really helpful. I never plan events and really have no idea what I am doing and had so many questions! This venue cannot hold more than 106 people so keep that in mind. The food was great - we had our tasting after we booked due to scheduling conflicts, but we went on reviews we read, etc. and we were so happy w the outcome. Everyone told us the food was great! I wish I ate more! The staff for the day off was on point, very friendly and helpful. I feel like everything went off without a hitch. Pricing there was reasonable. Its a hard thing to critique as so many things come into account here. For a unique NYC venue - for an event under 100 people. I'd recommend it. Jeno was the person we interacted with before the wedding and he was really helpful and professional. He met us well in advance and explained all the options we had and was very flexible. Had our wedding here in March 2015 and it was lovely, lovely, lovely. Jeno lent his considerable patience and expertise to plan out every little detail before and during the ceremony and reception. I am a hot mess under the best of circumstances and he really guided me and my equally clueless now-hubs through the process. The cost was reasonable (especially for NYC standards), and the food was actually really good --not typical wedding food. The bartender was a saint for putting up with my rowdy Irish/Italian family members and alcoholic friends, and they even let me play my iPod in place of having a band. I would describe the space as campy chic - lots of quirky decorations and a beautiful garden room upstairs. All of the servers/waiters were true professionals, and again, saints to put up with our drunk guests. I got married at the Alger House on December 8, 2012. We had both our ceremony and reception there. I really cannot say one negative thing about it. Nothing even came close to stressing me out. The place, which is so unique in itself, looked beautiful with some added holiday candles and decor. Numerous guests asked me where I found the place, as they were very impressed by it. The staff was professional but very friendly, and everything ran smoothly--even the transition from ceremony to reception. Jeno helped to make our evening perfect. He was wonderful to work with, and even fixed my bridesmaid's dress at one point in the night. From the planning to the actual event he was incredibly helpful, direct and responsive (answering emails within two minutes, which I find impressive). Many people commented on how great the food was--and it was, in fact, very good. There are also so many options to chose from, so you can create whatever kind of menu you desire. There were some comments on noise regulations in previous posts. We had a 4 piece jazz band playing until midnight, and there was absolutely no problem at all. Overall, it was the intimate, cozy,beautiful night that my husband I both really wanted. I will definitely come back to the Alger House, even if I have to make up an occasion to celebrate. I'm not sure how much this venue cost to rent out for the wedding I attended here but the bride did say it was one of the most inexpensive options she could find in all of Manhattan. Whatever she paid, it was worth it. The venue is stunning inside and out. It's tucked away on a very quiet residential block in the west village. The millionaire who owned this property also lives here I believe, and so the space was used extremely well. The bridal suite and bathrooms in the bridal suite were gorgeous. I am kind of still drooling over this space. The staff was familiar from the Manhattan penthouse, they work both locations and do it with great skill and sophistication. I was very impressed with the service by the staff and management here as well. I absolutely loved the loft stair case breaking the room into two halves. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat to someone looking for a real Manhattan high class wedding experience. read more

I just had my wedding this afternoon in Alger House, and I couldn't wait to write a review because my husband and I are EXTREMELY SATISFIED!! First, Jeno was the most responsible person I have ever seen. In my 8 months of wedding planning, we have over 100 emails back and forth, I have asked dumb questions and asked him to repeat many times, yet he ALWAYS responded to my concern very quickly (from within minutes to less than 2 hours) and was always very patience with me! I felt very comfortable addressing my concerns to him and asking for his professional opinions. Secondly, I was a very unorganized person even when I thought I have had everything planned out. Jeno and the entire staff assisted us in decoration and organizing gift bags and photos in the ways that were much better than my original plan (and avoided a potential chaos) , Every single staff member was very courteous, accommodating and thoughtful!! I was alone on the second floor bride's room getting ready while the guests were downstairs enjoying cocktail food, several staff actually walked upstairs to feed me because they know I was starving!! Also, I didn't do a good job coordinating the timing for music and ceremony officiant, but Jeno did it for me! Another instance is during reception, I placed my napkin on my lap to avoid sauce dripping on my gown; a staff member saw it and gave me another napkin to put on the tale to use. How thoughtful was that!? I didn't have a ask anything because they already thought of all and did all! I got so many compliments on Alger House's interior design too! Many friends asked me how I found this place and said I made the right choice! Compare to many other venues I saw in Manhattan, Alger house is affordable and the value of service far exceeding the price. Alger House is really the perfect place for a medium-sized (80-100) wedding. Our wedding was in early June 2013 and everything was perfect thanks to Jeno, whom I worked with initially, and Monika. Both were available, super responsive to our questions and very accommodating. I really appreciated this as I was reaching out wit more and more questions as the wedding date got closer. On the day of the event, I couldn't believe how beautiful the space looked; you don't need to go crazy with flowers and decorations. The team was super supportive; I was a starving bride and at one point Monika brought some bananas so I wouldn't be the fainting bride. The food was delicious; I tend to have low expectations for large events but the guests were raving. And the wait and bar staff are just awesome; they were really friendly and helpful. We had our wedding at Alger House in 2005, and were very happy with the entire planning process. Staff was easy to work with, gave us exactly what we wanted, and was very flexible with regard to our choices of wine and beer(we are picky!), outside vendors not a problem. We had about 100 people all together and it was just the right size. As for sound, we had a trio(piano, bass, drums) with a singer-only the singer was amplified-and it was perfect for dancing without being too loud. Food was several levels above that of most catering halls and the space was just beautiful. I still love looking at our photos from that day. read more

We got married at the Alger House in February, 2013 and it couldn't have been better. The location is gorgeous and the food and drink are high-end restaurant quality. Jeno was our main contact and he went above and beyond. Leading up to the big day, he was more than accommodating - answering question after question and letting us come by as much as we needed to. On the day of the wedding Jeno was a superstar. He essentially acted as the day-of-coordinator and took it upon himself to make sure the whole bridal party knew what they had to do since we couldn't get together for a real rehearsal the night before. He even stepped in to make sure my bride let go of her train when she hit the bottom of the steps so that she looked perfect when she walked down the aisle. My only criticism, and this isn't enough to remove a star, is that if you want to use an ipod to play music through their speakers you are really going to need to know what you are doing or have a friend who does. Jeno was very helpful in trying to get me the info I needed but he since he isn't an audio expert he couldn't help me himself. Hosted an 80 person Holiday party this past December & very happy with everything.

I honestly don't know how this planner Geno has a job. I made two appointments with him to view Alger house and Manhattan Penthouse at 1:30pm. I called before the appointment to say I was running slightly behind schedule and received his voicemail. I arrived at 1:41pm to be greeted and escorted around by someone who sets up the tables, chairs, etc., and given a tour. I was told that Geno had to leave because he had another appointment at Manhattan Penthouse with another client. Really? We got married here on Saturday 6/13/15. Everything was perfect for our 90 guests. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. The venue is beautiful, and it's on one of the nicest streets in the West Village. The food was great as well. We had a band and there was plenty of space for dancing. The upstairs room is also a great place for guests to step away from the dancing for a glass of wine. It was an amazing day. Thanks, Alger House & Jeno!! We had our wedding on October 13th! I cannot say enough about the staff at the Alger House. Jeno was ever-efficiant, always available and always accommodating! They are truly pro's! The space was beautiful, elegant, stunning! It was an intimate and incredibly memorable evening. I have been a server in Manhattan for many years, so am very picky about service! The staff was outstanding. I always had a full glass of wine and the courses were perfectly timed. I planned the wedding myself, and didn't have a day-of event coordinator. With Jeno and our party captain, Glenn, it didn't matter. They subtly moved my guests from one side of the room to another, communicated with our DJ, everything! They even facilitated our clean up at the end of the night! Our pastor was 15 minutes late, and Jeno helped to calm my nerves and move the evening along perfectly. When we came to pick up our personal items the next day, the staff helped us load everything into our called car! It was just above and beyond! Have your wedding at the Alger House! I just had my wedding reception at The Alger House in September 2011 and it was beautiful! The manager was great and very responsive. The venue is absolutely stunning (the pictures just doesn't do it any justice), so we didn't have to spend anything on decorations except for the centerpieces. My guests thought it was a beautiful venue, loved the food, and especially the premium open bar all night. For my small and intimate wedding, we had only 70 guests and this place was the right size so that it didn't look empty. I would highly recommend this venue. read more
