This facility does not honor the military outreach program that the rest of the YMCA's across the country have implemented. The rude lady at the front desk yesterday said she called her manager, who told her we needed to give her a "list from the DOD." First of all, there is no DoD, it is the DoW. I don't see how Brooks Family YMCA can have a negative reviews. This is an outstanding club in every possible category. My grandkids love the summer and school holiday camps. They're the best run programs I've seen. I love the gym, the weight lifting facility, the treadmills, and most notably the 13 great swim lap lanes. The grandkids love the family pool too. We loved going to the YMCA. Swimming laps became something that became a part of our senior fitness routine. We experienced a class or two here and there throughout our years as members. In October of 2024, after swimming laps for 20 minutes, our Chevy Tahoe was stolen from the parking lot of the YMCA. Wallet, phone, (all credit cards etc......) The police were called and they came and worked with the people at the front desk and my husband. We are taking COMPLETE responsibility for this careless mistake ( the thieves taking of the keys from the POCKET of the pair of my husbands workout pants hanging INSIDE the locker IN the men's locker room at the YMCA). Our house keys were on the car key fob that was stolen. (We had an attempted break in at our home the same week as the stolen car). Co-incidence? That being said here is my concern. Being that this is the "Young Men's CHRISTIAN Association, - is there NO compassion, concern, empathy with anyone from the YMCA front desk or upper management that was part of this interaction with the police and my husband on how we are? My husband used the Y phone to call me as his was stolen. SOMEONE at the front desk now knows that at least his phone is gone. Is there not a report at the Y and concern within the YMCA team "meeting" about theft and what they are going to do about the members involved (to support them for a minute? I thought there would be some kind of follow up phone call to see how we were doing. Maybe that is the mom in me coming out. To be so violated at a place that you FULLY trust, because you KNOW they watch WHO comes through the front door and make certain ALL MEMBERS are scanned, then a member, it can be assumed, stole the keys -- is VERY VERY unnerving. Certainly they checked all the video to help us/police find the persons who ENTERED the Y, checked in, entered the mens locker room, left the mens locker room, got in OUR car, in the YMCA parking lot, exited the parking lot etc. (?) I called after one week to ask why there wasn't a phone call to check up on two members of several years, who had their lives turned upside down at their facility? How we were doing? Were we ok? Here is what I heard. They were very sorry they didn't call us. Ironically, I did get an email reminder that our credit card wouldn't go through for our dues. Hmmm. I called and reminded them that this was the first outreach from them since the theft. The credit card on file had been in the stolen wallet that was in the stolen vehicle. I cancelled that stolen credit card. Oh sorry! Placing reminders in the newsletters about locking car doors, lockers in the locker room are all very helpful. We bought a lock for our locker for our next fitness center. What needs to be added to that little bit in the newsletter is this: "We will always be here to support our members if you are in need of us here at the YMCA. We will check on you, our valued members, if you are robbed at our facility and have your lives totally disrupted. We care about OUR MEMBERS and want only the best for them." A large part of a fitness facility if feeling safe and secure. Even without using the woman's locker room myself, (very often) I would find myself always looking over my shoulder. Needing to always make certain my car was locked. The Tahoe WAS locked. Locker - not. Probably needing to shorten my swim to leave and check that my car was still in the parking lot. I am not certain what it would take to feel safe at this facility. For now, I am still nervous. How can a person pass through the "security at the front" and then get away with taking property from the facility. read more

If it ain't Brooks, don't fix it. And this YMCA isn't broken whatsoever, Quite the opposite. Definitely one of the most impressive YMCA facilities I have used anywhere. It's brand shiny new, attached to a park land in Charlottesville, and everybody here is really friendly. The equipment is absolutely state-of-the-art and I love it here. I would actually go as far as to say this is one of the 10 best YMCA facilities I've used in the whole country and has some of the best employees as well. And I have used a lot of them. Not to mention they let me in without making any phone calls which I appreciate a lot. read more

I've been going to this Y for 6 months mainly for the gym! When I first joined, it was an great experience. Sadly the more i've been attending, I feel like staff have gotten less friendly and, have gotten more rude. The only staff I will say that are kind and, do an amazing job at this Ymca is Misty who works at the front desk and, Aaron at the fitness center. I feel like the fitness center has way too many cardio machines and, there's really not much actual workout equipment. Plus I feel like most staff ignore the kids who are under the age of 13 who use the equipment and, treat it poorly that others can't even use it because of kids destroying it. read more

Overcrowded, cramped and poorly designed free weight area. Overall design of the facility seems to be more for looks versus function and flow when at full capacity during busy times. Not enough space but I suppose you have to pack in as many PAYING members as possible to support the number of free loaders at this particular YMCA. Want to use the pool that you are paying for? Good luck with that....early morning lap lanes are rare and most weeks non existing unless you want to share with others and help spread the COVID love with such close contact with strangers. Very nice staff though Unfortunately the only other options in Charlottesville are as bad if not worse so I feel obligated to give 2 stars in comparison.... read more

This is a review of the gym area only. I've never been to the pool or any of the classes. This place has good equipment for an affordable price ($54/month). Much better than Planet Fitness, which doesn't have free weights. Here they have three power racks and three benches. They also have the standard stuff - smith machine, leg press, lots of weight machines, dumbbells, solid amount of cardio equipment. Good staff too. Glad I joined! read more

My daughter and I have been members of the Brooks Family YMCA in Charlottesville for less than 6 months and we love it. It is an incredibly clean and organized facility with lots of options for cardio and weight training. I love the spin classes which are available almost daily and various hours of the day. The instructors for spin classes are all incredible and challenging yet approachable and encouraging. The indoor walking/running track is awesome boasting large beautiful window seats which offer beautiful views of the trees behind the building. There's even a child care facility onsite! The design of the building itself is also thoughtful. There are locker rooms but multiple cubbies and jacket racks for storage. There are two levels , the lower level with the basketball court and yoga/ studio rooms as well as a large weight training area. Not to knock the local fitness centers but I was a longtime member of ACAC however due to a job change I could no longer afford that membership. I've waited 4 years to rejoin a gym and the Brooks Family YMCA is definitely worth the wait. Everyone I meet at the YMCA appears to be as satisfied as I am and why not?!? We have the cleanest, most modern and affordable facility with the most amenities in Charlottesville, Va. Thank You to everyone who had a hand in brining this YMCA to our area. read more

I was so glad when the Brooks Family YMCA opened in Charlottesville! Classes are great and varied and the staff does truly value member input about offerings and scheduling of classes. The facility is clean with new machines and a great view of the forest. The pools are great and the value for money is incredible. Staff is always friendly and helpful. The basketball court was a needed amenity in town and it is great to see kids using the court after school and for games on Saturday mornings. I left another gym in Charlottesville that was too expensive and where I constantly felt bad about my body, which is NOT why I work out. It's been great to join a gym with a more diverse membership and where families are welcomed. The range of activities offered allow everyone to get involved and the Y truly is living it's mission. It truly feels like a great community space and a welcome addition to town. read more

The staff is not very friendly! The lifeguards are very rude! When you think of a YMCA, you think about family oriented and friendly. Not at this Y. And when we signed up, they promised that they were getting more equipment for the upstairs part of the gym. When? It's sad that this huge facility has such limited weight lifting equipment! Definitely not worth the price. read more

My family and I are members of the Brooks Family YMCA. We are big supporters of a facility that welcomes diversity and helps all members reach their fitness goals! I love that about the Y! I also think you keep your facility clean and your staff is very welcoming and friendly. However, I am extremely disappointed in your lack of concern for McIntire Park's Flora and Fauna. You have ignored the concerns of many patrons who have contacted you regarding the number of bird strikes which occurred during fall and spring migration. You attempted to resolve the issue by putting up a plastic owl, which does absolutely nothing to deter strikes! Many people attempted to give you advice and window companies reached out to help, but you ignored all emails and phone calls. In addition, you have recently put out rat poison which will further endanger wildlife that come in contact with the dead rodents. Charlottesville City and the public entrusted you with our public park and again, its flora and fauna! I'm so disappointed! read more
