Another YMCA visit during my travels. This one is a concept I prefer more with everything all on one main floor. The lady that checked me in wasn't so pleasant so that's part of my star bump. Didn't really get that welcome feeling with her when I mentioned I was a Nationwide Member. The locker rooms were easy to access and very cooled down. Men's locker rooms had a middle room for lounging. The towels here are super large (instead of the normal sweat towels). There's one enclosed room with weight machines, and then a larger open room with smith machines, dumbbells, bench, incline, pulley machines, treadmills/ellipticals and a cardio training zone. They also have an outdoor covered astroturf cardio zone. There is a large heated pool, basketball court and separate studio rooms for fitness classes. My only gripe is that front desk lady and the limited benches they have. Otherwise, this is a solid gym option! read more

This ymca is unsanitary and dirty,they barely wipe down machines and most of the workers have an attitude especially the African American lady with curly hair she is disrespectful and should not be working there if she treats pepole bad and she kicks people out the basketball court even tho she really has no authority I'm going to start going to la fitness and not this trash hole. read more

The therapy pool is fantastic. I do however , miss the aqua therapy sessions there in the AM when most seniors are available. Don't understand how they have been dropped only 1am & 1 pm / also don't understand why hot tub was shut down. & closed shame appears as if low maintenance on mgt part/ why no auto locks on lockers any longer? Brooks YMCA is okay but the membership service provided by Ms. Nicole Payne is horrendous. Ms. Payne insults Y members in the presence of children and thinks she is being funny. This is the best Gym I've ever been a member of. My son and I were both members. They based the monthly fee my upon my salary, which really helped. I really liked the locker room and the warm fresh towels they would give you when you needed one. I have been thinking about re-joining. Ernie and I both need to start working out. I love the pools as well. They have an Olympic size pool and then a smaller heated pool. The only bad part it is, it's not real close to home. I have silver sneakers and I am able to use the Y with silver sneakers at no cost. I expect that I will use it more in the summer when it is too warm to go walking during the day. Great staff. Wonderful exercise programs. There are even programs for people with disabilities through the brooks rehab program monthly charges $15 after an assessment. read more

This is THE place for great workouts and classes at affordable pricing. My family of four enjoys a few of the amenities at Brooks YMCA. Our favorites include Les Mills Bodypump and Time classes. The instructors gladly modify instruction to accommodate wherever you are on your fitness path. I'd like to learn more about individualized training or incentives and workout plans at the Y. This place gets SO busy! When I worked night shift I used to spend my days here, but now that I work a regular shift it's much harder. Sometimes the classes are just so full and it gets so hot. Overall this gym has a really good class schedule and awesome instructors. The machines are in good condition, too. read more

I've been a member here for about 4 months and I am really glad I joined. I absolutely love the group fitness classes! They offer so many classes (Les Mills, plus more), all hours of the day and evening. I rarely use the gym area so I can't say much about that but from what I've seen, they seem to offer ample equipment. Towels are included. Employees are always friendly and I've never had a bad group fitness instructor. The locker room is sometimes a bit untidy, but I feel like they do a pretty good job staying on top of cleaning. It certainly doesn't help having women and girls walk around in wet bathing suits and no towels. The locker room has a couple of areas with hair dryers, and is also stocked with soap, lotion, and other toiletries. There is also a Subway at the entrance to the gym, plus a few vending machines. I think the membership fee is fairly reasonable, but leaning towards the high side. I pay $54 just for myself, but that includes all but a couple of classes. It seems like a great place for families. They have a large kids area that includes an outdoor playground. read more

I enjoyed going and the physical therapist was real nice but the problem is in billing. I've called two days in a row asking for a itemized statement for my visits and was told I would have them emailed the same day and still nothing. This is ridiculous. I have been going to the YMCA for a few months now and absolutely love it! They have hundreds of classes each week catering to every age, fitness level and interest. I particularly love Les Miles body pump. There are several group exercise rooms, basketball court, Olympic size pool, warm pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, etc... The gym is always clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful, offers towel service, etc... My children love going to the kids club and are often greeted by name. I would definitely recommend this gym to anyone who lives or works nearby, it has so much more to offer over all the other gyms in town. read more

Their hours on the weekend are ridiculous. They close on Saturday and Sunday at 1pm. There are a lot of people that work during the week 10 to 12 hours and are too tired or get off work too late to work out and the weekends are there only time to go to the gym. This alone would distract me from joining the YMCA Brooks YMCA. read more

When I first moved to Jacksonville, I struggled to find a gym that I enjoyed going to. Going to a new gym can always be a bit daunting, not knowing anyone there and unfamiliar with your surroundings, but the staff and trainers on hand helped make me feel welcomed, especially Evan, who guided me through the facility and helped me get my bearings. The gym has such a large amount of treadmills, elliptical machines and bikes that you rarely are waiting for an available machine. There are 2 levels to the gym, with the downstairs being devoted largely to free weights and cardio machines, and the upstairs dedicated to assisted weight machines. As a swimmer, the only real downside is there is not enough swimming pools, as whenever I go you are usually at least 2 in a lane at times, not good for those who are training or looking to put some laps away. That being said, the amount of classes that are made available to you through your membership means you will always be kept busy. If you are looking for more focused training there are small group training sessions and personal trainers for an affordable price. Located right next to the town centre, you also have a large amount of places to eat if you're too worn out from your exercises, an even a Subway if you don't feel like stopping off somewhere else. All in all, a great facility that has something for everyone! read more

Is it racism or sexism...feels like both, but I'll get to that. The gym itself is good, mot the best due to a few too many minor maintenance items that just don't seem important enough to address. Still, a good gym. There are very few staff members that haven't greeted us upon arrival or said polite goodbyes as we left; a polite group overall. To my first point, there is an elderly woman (Ann, I believe) that warmly and politely interacts with the gym patrons including my wife, but not me. I've become more and more aware of her discriminating behavior since April as she says "Good morning! How are you?", or "Have a good morning!", as my wife and other members walk by her and before the members themselves have said anything. For reference, my wife has fair skin, light brown hair and blue eyes; I have olive skin, black hair and brown eyes. This post is a result of this morning's interaction. I had wrapped up and as I collected my things from the locker I heard Ann greet a member (male, fair skin, light brown hair, blue eyes) saying warmly "Good morning!...". As I approached the desk are on my way to the door she greeted another member (male, fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes) in the same manner as the first. As I walk by, Ann looks down at her computer and starts typing. I say "Have a good morning!", to which she looks up with what was more of a glare than a smile and replies with a tepid "Good morning". I let it go, again, but this time is different. I'm not perfect but I aware I heard her mutter "asshole" after I had moved on another 20 feet. Again, I'm not perfect and I'm not willing to stake my life on it, but I'm not deaf and her behavior is consistent enough to eliminate the possibility that it was imagined . The next time my wife is with me (after Ann greets her and ignores me), I'll be addressing this behavior from Ann with her and the gym's management. read more

I would give Brooks 5 stars...except for the hefty pricetag. My monthly membership fees are ridiculously high, but I love the place, and have been a member for a few years. The hours are very accommodating and the staff is friendly, and I've made friends with several of the staff members over the years. The equipment is new (cardio machines were replaced a month ago) and each treadmill has its own television, as do the ellipticals and stationary bikes. The facility is two stories, and also houses a yoga/pilates studio, spinning studio, and aerobics room, in addition to his and hers saunas and locker rooms (they even offer lotion, q-tips and razors), basketball/volleyball court, a heated indoor swimming pool, child care and a healthy snack/juice bar. Personal lockers (you don't have to bring a lock, as there are built-in number combination locks!) line the hallway and locker rooms. Towels are free to use, and there's a filtered water machine in the locker room. Private changing rooms are available too. The group fitness classes, and instructors, are fantastic! There's something for everyone, morning, noon and night, for all abilities. Body pump, spinning and fitness yoga among my favorites. My only complaints would be that there's no music playing overall on the fitness floor like other Ys I've been to and there are also no common televisions that you can tune into. The stairclimbers (even the newly replaced ones) don't have TVs. And it can be extremely humid in the mornings inside the gym, making cardio difficult. read more

This is like the Disney Land of YMCAs. I mean, seriously, it is hard to believe that this place even IS a YMCA, or even any other kind of gym, for that matter. This is, hands down, the nicest gym I have ever been in. First off, the ladies locker room more resembles a locker room at a spa than at a gym. There are flat screen TVs all over, a hot tub, a sauna, a steam room, and the decor is modern, chic and clean. Second off, the facilities are NICE. They have machines in this place that I couldn't have even imagined, like the one made to mimic mountain climbing, for example. And all the machines that are your standard gym equipment are state of the art. The class rooms are all equipped with state of the art sound systems and wooden floors. They are also huge, to accommodate the large numbers of people who attend the classes, but even still some of the classes are moved to the auditorium because of overflow. I don't live close enough to this gym to make it worth the drive. If I did, I would be here all the time. It's gorgeous. And that is an adjective I never thought I would use to describe a gym. I joined the Brooks Fitness Center two years ago when it opened and as facilities go it is top notch. I was afraid that when it took on the YMCA affiliation from a private club that the quality of the environment and the services offered would diminish. This has not been the case. In fact there are more services being offered. Yes the on-site Spa and Massage office closed, but there is a new cafe with quality and affordable smoothies, wraps and salads. The fitness staff have a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines, including health education, exercise physiology, strength conditioning and aquatics instruction. Whenever I look around I always see a staff member within sight. The fitness equipment and variations and quantity are outstanding and there is every little waiting for a piece of equipment even during the busy times of the day. In addition the locker rooms still have that private club mentality with wonderful shower areas, a steam room and sauna and then a coed indoor lap pool. As most of the Y facilities on the First Coast the amount of services and classes available are plentiful. Do not pass up an opportunity to check this facility out. read more

While there are some good things about this gym as noted by other posters, the free weight area is incredibly small and the lockerooms border on creepy. They simply don't have the space in the lockerrooms to handle traffic that a Y would produce. if you think about taking a shower or lifting weights at peak hours, this is not the place. read more
