Would give them 3.5 stars. Brooks Landing has changed ownership but continues to be a staple in the neighborhood. I miss the Korean food on the menu like the Bibimbap but the food is still just as good. The renovations inside are also a great addition to the place. My older son loves the waffles there. The four droogs made up our rassoodocks to go to Brooks Landing Diner, where Dave and Bo had gone once before as a backup plan when [REDACTED] was closed. The Brooks Landing sub-neighborhood, located within the 19th Ward, was once known as Castletown, and was originally settled in the early 19th Century. The Genesee Valley Canal was constructed through the area in the mid-1800s. Brooks Landing now abuts the Genesee River. A new Staybridge Suites building is at the "landing" itself--in the past there have been like weird tours or something that dock their boats there every so often, like U of R tours maybe? But that was like once. Haven't heard much about it since then. Still, I guess it's technically a "landing." The Brooks Landing Diner is located in a small strip mall on Genesee Street. Off-street parking is available, and is clutch, because the the streets at this hour are riddled with school buses, with their red stop signs alight, just begging you to drive through them, thereby violating the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and the D.A.'s office hasn't been plea bargaining those charges lately, so, good luck with those five points you just got on your license! There's a counter straight ahead. Tables to the right. We picked a table all the way down at the end so the rest of the patrons couldn't hear Dave and Bo's continued vehement debate over what actually constitutes "fresh fruit." An inernal and eternal argument. Hey there, hi there, ho there, you're as welcome as can be! There's a Korean twist to this diner menu! (front page of menu, right side, 6th item down). We all got a cup of coffee right away; Dave and Aaron, black; Bo and Pat, mit half & half. Bo was about to stir in his half & half when Pat stopped him, "Don't touch it!" He was glancing down at Bo's coffee cup and spoon. The waitress/possible owner had done something to marvel over: "The spoon. She didn't put it on the table," Pat observed. "I like that." Dave ordered the Korean home-made beef hash. Pat ordered the corn beef hash with eggs and home [fries], and he sprung, as always, for an English muffin. Aaron got pancakes with egg and beef sausage. Bo got pancakes with egg and bacon. Bo brought, as always, his real maple syrup. There was a steady stream of folk coming in and getting to-go orders. The counter was full, too. The place was pretty hoppin'! Some of the tables started filling up, but mostly this was only at the end, as we were preparing to leave. A strange metal-on-metal chopping sound was coming from the kitchen area. Could it be-? It just might have been- We figured this was the sound of Dave's Korean hash being hashed. The waitress was a little overwhelmed with the influx of customers. Pat, who has prior waitressing experience, snuck up to the coffee machine and served us. The food arrived, and boy, did it arrive! There were forks flyin' at Dave's plate from every which way to get a tasting of his Korean hash! The Korean hash was unlike anything the Xonuts crew has ever encountered. The unique blend of Korean flavorings cuddled every piece of hash, ensuring an incredibly tasty experience. Dave smiled knowingly as he pondered (not for the first time) how he always manages to pick the best item on the menu. The eggs were just to Pat's liking: playfully runny, the yolk sneaking around to places where perhaps it shouldn't be peeking, but not brashly trespassing where it knows it shouldn't. The potatoes were flavorful and weren't overcooked. The corn beef hash was excellent. The name is derived from the French verb hacher (to chop). Very tasty pancakes, flavorful sausage, and well cooked eggs. Brooks Landing delivered when it came to serving up delicious diner staples. If you're sitting at a table, you don't order at the counter, but you pay at the counter. The tab for three was just under $30. Brooks Landing Diner is a good place to go if you want traditional greasy spoon diner food (except for that one breakfast menu item that's not traditional greasy spoon diner food). You could keep the prices very reasonable, if you so chose. Pro Tip: Prepare your olfactory receptors for aromatic overload. You'll never walk into a diner with a finer diner fragrance. Landed here to meet a friend for a leisurely breakfast and it was an okay stop. The breakfast menu is right down the middle for any American diner. Eggs, pancakes, some breakfast sandwiches, waffles, etc. The menu had so many options I struggled to settle on what was good. Went for the short stack with eggs and sausage and the food was solid all around (not necessarily outstanding). I mostly took advantage of the bottomless coffee, again, nothing to write home about but it is nice that it was out in the customer area and you could refill your own without bothering the counter staff. My partner eats gluten-free and got eggs and hashbrowns that met expectation. The service is a plus, very attentive, they don't disappear and were doting. Event patient while I waited for my friend to come, which she was tied up in traffic. Parking was easy right in front. The prices can't be beat, you can't go anywhere for breakfast for under $20 and it was well under. Dining room is aged, old fixtures, not much ambiance but not what I was looking for. It's not the fanciest dining experience in the world, but this place is right on my way to school and it does the trick for a quick breakfast. They have plenty of menu options, including some of korean descent, and everything (especially breakfast) is pretty cheaply priced. They also allow call-in/takeout orders and they offer delivery. But I did see some very inexpensive breakfasts on the menu and suspect that's where they do most of the business. The people here are very nice and offered me a freshly made donut hole as a bonus. I really hate giving this place one star as the owners are really sweet. The first thing I registered when I walked in was how the place didn't seem clean. The tables were sticky. My bulgogi was ok - beef was dry and the dish needed salt. The rice was dry (read: stale). The kimchi was tasty. My friend's chicken and waffles were slightly better. He said the waffle was good but the wings were lacklustre. After all that, I was later told that there was a dead fly wedged on top of the can of Coke my friend ordered and a patron at the next table discovered a half eaten sandwich in the menu holder. I've driven by this diner for years without ever trying it out. At the suggestion of my niece, we decided to give it a try after realizing that Arnett Cafe is closed on Mondays. The vibe is extremely relaxed. You can seat yourself wherever. The ordering process is a little unusual, but cool. Grab a sheet of paper and menu located on the wall of your table and highlight your desired order. I ordered a waffle, home fries and OJ. Everything was fine, but nothing was memorable. Customer service was nice. Diner looks like it is family owned and I hate to say this, but it doesn't look especially clean. Food is okay...nothing special. I got a Korean dish, which was very good, but other people in my group got food that didn't look as appetizing. My one friend got a salmon burger that looked like a hockey puck. She couldn't even eat it. The breakfasts looked decent. The menu has typical diner fare, as well as a couple Korean meals. Diner food is priced pretty low, but the Korean food costs quite a bit (over 10 bucks). The staff was very nice to our group. Service was a little slow, but there were a lot of us, so I can't blame them. It was also nice of them to accommodate our large group in their tiny seating area. One of my favorite Diners in town. The staff is awesome and has their way about doing things that as you become a patron will learn. For example if you have been waiting for coffee and it hasn't come, don't feel at all uncomfortable just getting up and getting it yourself, that is completely acceptable here. Sue the young lady that runs it tells it how it is and aims to please. Most of the menu is what you would expect from a standard diner. But there is a little section on the back labelled Korean Dishes.... this is the menu you should be ordering from!! My favorite is the Beef Bulgogi it is incredible. My absolute favorite diner of all time. The staff are so, so friendly and are quick to make conversation or joke around. Service is quick and attentive and the food is cheap. You can get a burger and fries there for about $4 and it's delicious. I have yet to try their Korean dishes that they offer, but I've heard great things. A little anecdote about how nice they are: The first time I ever went there was about 2 years ago in the dead of winter. I was a U of R student at the time and my boyfriend and I decided to try it out for something quick to eat. The staff member who greeted us brought us over to a table where the space heater was blowing and made sure that it was facing us so that we would be warm. I often stop here when seeing family in Rochester. The other reviewer is right that the menu is somewhat limited, but there are enough diner classics that everyone in your group will leave happy! After all, most people are there for breakfast anyhow. The home fries are so good that any eggs almost feel like the side dish, and they'll even do egg whites only for the health-conscious. The owner is great, too -- friendly, energetic, spunky; and the handful of Korean menu items that she's included are an added bonus. If you're in the mood for something tastier than a burger or tuna melt, her "bibimbap" (rice mixed with meat and vegetables, topped with an egg) really hits the spot.
