If I could leave -5 stars I would. My mother was told she was going to be charged $40 to restring her bracelet. Unfortunately, she has Alzheimer's and forgot to pick the bracelet up. It hadn't been quite a year, and the store called to see if she was coming to get it. I said that I would, explaining my mother's situation. I was told by several people there the cost would be $40, and they would waive the $25 long term storage fee (for a small bracelet, but whatever) if we came to get it soon. I thanked them, and my mom and her friend picked it up today. When my mom came home, I was shocked to hear they charged her $65 for a bracelet that probably cost $20 brand new. I called the store to ask what happened, and the owner was rude. He hung up on me. In the past, I've given that place business. It will NEVER happen again. read more

I took my sapphire ring in to see if they could replace a sapphire that had fallen out. After 4 or 5 days, the person who repairs jewelry for this shop, came back with the price to replace the sapphire. I then received a call that indicated that I would need to pick it sup, that they couldn't fix it after all. The rings prongs had been bent back and broken off. The rich was now unwearable. The owner and an employee double teamed me, gas lighted me and insisted that the ring was in the same condition as when I brought it in. Theat was a lie. When I brought It in, you really couldn't tell the sapphire was missing. When returned to me, there was a large whole, very front and center making the ring worthless. to me. The way that the principals in this company turned on me, gas lighted me as if to say I had no idea in what condition my right was in -- I had been able to wear it for several years with the sapphire missing. This store has a great selection of watches and jewelry (obviously). They also do engraving on almost anything, from lockets to wine bottles (see the picture I uploaded). This is a great sentimental gift idea for a wedding present, a birthday, or another 'special occasion'. The store is small, but they have a good amount to choose from. The owner is nice and makes sure to help you if you are looking for anything special, but otherwise lets you browse in case you find something you like. The front of the store is very welcoming, they always have an interesting window display that makes me want to go in and look around. read more

Took in a watch for a repair in March 2019. Took forever but they said they replaced the battery and cleaned it. The day we get it home the stem falls out. Took it back and after another long repair we got it back. It ran for two days and quit again. Took it back a 3rd time and when it was ready they said it just needed a new battery? When I inquired about the one they put in in April they just stared at me... I asked if the battery was under warranty and nothing! They wanted the money for another battery more than they wanted any future business from us. Something is not right here. read more

My 88 YO Mother took many very old coins and paper bills in for CUDA to look at and decided based on CUDAS' on the spot appraisal to sell many old bills to HIM, and did so. Most of my siblings had no idea my elderly Mother was going to be doing this. Many of these paper bills were significant to our family heritage based on their dates and the banks in Nebraska they were from and are of much more value to our family than the amount CUDA paid for them. I emailed this information to CUDA before the next business day, that some of our family would want even one of these paper bills for memory sake and framing on our family homes and that we would be happy to pay what ever he wants. CUDA just aid "NO, we made a deal and I bought them". He also said He would not sell even one of these bills back to me. My ring was returned sticky. I don't understand why but it's not professional. The people were kind but spoke to each other poorly. They seem like crooks & I felt uncomfortable. The band which was originally white gold was replaced with a discolored piece which I did not notice until I got into my car and drove away a bit. Super unhappy. Please go elsewhere. Today I purchased jewelry from Halls. It was a gift and I wanted it engraved. Halls recommended this place, so I called them immediately, since I was already in the Plaza area. ME "I was calling about having a gift engraved." HIM Well, it is 3:30 and we close at 5:00! ME "Well, I just need to write a date and initials." HIM "Uhhhh, I don't know.....I would have to see it"....(sigh and long pause)... I did quite a bit of business with Carl Cuda and was very happy about it for a long time. This was my go-to spot for estate jewelry, repairs and custom work. But a very bad experience brought that to an end. A year or so ago I bought an antique pocket watch, the tag on which clearly stated 14k. Not gold plated, not gold-filled - solid 14k gold. Later, when I discovered that it was NOT 14k gold, I took it back to the shop where Carl asked me, "Who told you that it was 14k?" YOU did, dude. His appraiser was there and examined it for about half an hour and could not find any indication that it was solid gold. Carl not only would not refund my purchase price OR offer me store credit, but told me it was "too late" to return it - in a VERY unpleasant manner, in front of a store full of people. In my opinion, this is not a trust-worth seller. Stay away. read more

Wow. Completely unprofessional experience here. Brought a watch in to get the glass fixed. They did nothing for weeks, finally called them and they said their watch guy couldn't do it. They said they would send it to another watch guy. Weeks later I called again and they made up some bogus story a second time. Never once did they call me. Surprised they gave me my watch back as I saw a sign saying they had the right to keep the piece if left there for longer than 30 days. Do not use this store for anything. If I could give them zero stars, I would. They kept a watch of mine that needed repair for 7 weeks. SEVEN WEEKS! They said they would send it to "their watch guy" and call me back. They never called back. I called them back, they said they'd have it next week. "We'll call you next Tuesday," they said. They never called back. I called them back...this continued for 7 weeks. My husband called for me the last two weeks of this ordeal and they finally got the watch back to me. I was thiiiiiiiis close to filing a police report. Took something to be engraved and told it would be hand engraved. Great, but this isn't the by hand done for fine jewelry. Be aware that by hand means by hand with a tool that ends up leaving the jewelry looking like it was beat by a jack hammer. They do not do returns and only offered store credit. Nothing in the store can replace the piece ruined. If you are needing fine engraving, this is not it. When I expressed my unhappiness with the piece, I was met with ridicule. I was also told that I should have known better and should have shown what constituted good engraving. I was told he went to school for this and knows better than I do. I have engraved while working for a jewelry store and this is not of a standard I would ever have presented a customer. read more

Very unprofessional, rude and did not follow through with completing a repair on day it was promised. When I called to make sure jewelry repair was ready for pick up, was told it was not even started. Said if I needed it that day, to come pick it up. Gave them a chance to contact employee who does repairs who did come in; I could hear her in background yelling about the repair and then they called back and said it was a repair she couldn't do. Would have been nice if they had been more upfront with me when I dropped off item or at least called within week to inform me they were unable to do repair so I could take to a competent jeweler. Not recommended. At first I was glad that my engagement ring was purchased at a local KC business, Brookside Jewelry. Initially, the ring was too large but I assumed it would be able to be resized. I wore the ring on my middle finger for the three-week road trip on which my fiance proposed. When I returned to town, however, I began to regret the choice of seller. Carl Cuda (mentioned in several other reviews here) told me that because of the style of ring, it "couldn't" be resized, even though Brookside Jewelry employees were responsible for sizing my finger, and had clearly done a poor job. I wore a temporary ring guard for about a week as I decided what to do next. For insurance purposes, I had to have the ring appraised. Brookside only performs appraisals once a month, so my fiance and I took the ring to another store. There we were told that the ring was out of round (which could be plainly seen), was not the size we had ordered, and was not very well made. The other jeweler advised us to return to the seller to have the issues resolved. When confronted with the defects in the ring, most importantly that it was made in the incorrect size, Cuda refused to rectify any of the problems. He in fact grilled us about the other jewelry store we had visited and insisted that they like to "bash" him. He then himself confirmed that the ring was out of round, the wrong size, and unstable in general. He later suggested that the other store may have bent the ring while I couldn't see in order to make him look bad. I ended up getting the ring's size adjusted by having it filled with gold, and paid Brookside $85 for an appraisal that should have come with it in the first place. The ring is actually still too big, but I wouldn't return there for a "free" fix of any kind. read more

After being completely satisfied by the engraving service and customer service in my browsing on numerous occasions; I was treated as a second class citizen by the woman working in the store upon entering this morning. I went in to spend money, I didn't know how much and I didn't care, I wanted to buy a nice piece of jewelry and I had every intention of doing so. I went in the store after being in class since 7, I wasn't dressed to impress, but I was ready to make a purchase. I was speaking with the gentleman of the store who is always helpful and kind, and this awful woman working there decided question me and talk to me as if I had no money, as if I shouldn't be in there, and proceeded to tell me they had lay-a-way if I couldn't get it now, asked if I was sure I wanted to buy it today, and so on. She then proceeded to ask me where I lived and several other leading questions as if she thought I wasn't worthy of entering their business. Over the past year I had recommended their store to several people, boasting that they had great deals,beautiful jewelry, and were very helpful. I will NEVER go back, and I suggest you all find a place that actually wants to sell jewelry to people who come in wanting to buy it. read more

My experience was horrendous! I had two fluorite rings and took them in to be resized. I also informed them that they were both fluorite rings. For those who don't know, fluorite is an extremely soft gem stone, a bench jeweler is supposed to know that. Both of my stones that were clear as glass, were returned to me looking extremely cloudy and occluded. My stones had been cracked internally, scraped up on the outside, and even after they were "cleaned and steamed," remained cloudy. The cost of my rings were never paid for, I was only refunded the cost of the repair for one of them. The bench jeweler then tried to tell me that my stones came that way. When I showed pictures/evidence of them otherwise, then she stated they were quartz and not fluorite even though when they took my service order, they wrote the type of gemstone it was on the small envelope they placed and bagged my rings in. Plus, I have the certificate of authenticity which proves they were fluorite, their exact color, and location where they were mined. Shoppers Beware! read more

When I was looking for someone to restore and customize my Grandfathers vintage 14k gold signet ring I was referred to Carl Cuda by another jeweler. He referred to Carl as the "Best engraver in Kansas City". The work I wanted done was extensive. The size was 3 sizes too small, and the initials needed changed. I wanted the same art deco font to be redone, but with my initials instead of my grandfathers, and a small diamond needed replaced. The original diamond had been removed and reused for another ring by my grandmother many years before. After a brief consult with Carl and his technician I felt that I was in good hands. I agreed to leave the ring for a comprehensive estimate. Two days later I had approved the cost and the restoration was started. I have had a wonderful experience with Brookside Jewelry. I wanted a more unique engagement ring than what could be easily (or cheaply) found in stores or online. So my fiance had bought a diamond on its own, and we took it to Brookside Jewelry together to design a ring. They looked at photos I liked and showed us pages of different band options, even ordering a couple different ones for us to try. They were also able to get the ring made in just a week, since we needed it rushed it before my fiance left town. It turned out even better than we could have imagined! After this, I used them to buy both my husband's wedding band and my wedding band. We also had some old jewelry that they were willing to look at and trade to cover costs. They gave us a great deal every time - we could not have been more grateful. I've also had multiple rings sized down here, all of which they did quickly and perfectly. Went in for an estimate of having a channel set diamond ring repaired. Another chain jewelry store had estimated the cost for the repair at $240.00. Brookside Jewelry estimated that the work would cost $500.00. When I said "NO!" they suggested it would cost less to have the ring reset - new gold for less money. No integrity! I took my watch in for a battery replacement. When the woman was finished, she came out, polished my watch with a cloth and then handed my watch to me to put back on. She then charged me the $10 for the battery. As soon as I get to my car I looked my watch over and noticed a super deep gauge-like scratch on the back/ case side of my watch. I had to go back to work so I couldn't immediately go back in and ask what happened. I was irritated that she was aware she did that, and then handed it over to me as if nothing happened. I gave them a call and talked to Duke who didn't really even apologize and said that if I came back they could "probably" fix it. I said I'm not really that concerned with the scratch, because it's on the backside and it's a 2 year old watch that already has some wear and tear, but I am concerned with the fact that this was done, and they just sent me on my way without acknowledging they did that. He also said on the phone that they "may not even charge me for the repair". I said ummm... well how about you just refund what I paid for the battery since the scratch isn't necessary to repair. He said alright, that'll work, but you still have to bring your card by so we can put the refund on it. I went in for my refund, showed them the watch and said what happened... they just took my watch and left the room without saying anything. I could hear them talking about it and asking "who did it" and the lady that helped me the day before said, "well I replaced the battery, but I didn't see that!". About 10 minutes later they came back, handed me the watch with the scratch buffed or polished out. I said "wow, it's practically disappeared! But actually, the guy on the phone said I just needed to bring my card in for a refund". The older guy (I think the owner) shouted at me, "NO REFUNDS! We fixed your watch for free!" I said, well yes, but you just took my watch from me and left the room, I didn't know you were going to fix it because I didn't come here to have it fixed. He said on the phone that I could get my money back. They just stood there and glared at me while he shouted "No refunds, WE DON'T DO REFUNDS". He then leaned into the back and said, "Did you tell her we'd give her a refund!?" The guy I talked to on the phone never came out of the back to speak to me but said loudly back, "I said we would if we couldn't fix it!". That is not at all what he told me on the phone. The first time I walked in there they weren't even friendly. I really hope holding onto $10 instead of refunding me for my inconvenience of having to come back to your store for a mistake YOU did, and still never admitted to or apologized for, is worth losing my future business and the business of anyone I know! These folks have no customer service skills whatsoever. Get some integrity! read more
