There were a lot of balls laying around due to the path only rule. We started with Captain's choice but since we had time to linger, we switched back to stroke play. The front nine is pretty straight but things get more tricky on the back nine. All and all a good day.

Easy to find, not far off Hwy 29 on Hicone Road…read more First impression is good with nice white fence fronting the property and a large parking area in front of a an impressive looking clubhouse. However on entering the clubhouse it has seen better days and is rather plain inside. To the left is the sign in desk and "snack bar". To the right a large seating area with tables for after the round activities. Didn't use the snack bar but it appears to be pay and fix you own set up. Not my cup of tea these days. We had been warned in advance that they.had just punched their greens and sanded them so the price of 18 was really low but probably what it should have been. They were really slow this afternoon since it had been raining for a couple of days and was really cloudy but by the time we finished the sun had come out and we got a glimpse of this hidden gem. The tee boxes and fairway are in great condition. Four sets of tees for all skill levels. Front nine is pretty straight forward with ample fairways and was in great condition. The greens as previously stated were not good but looked like they would be tricky under normal conditions. There are some large and some small but all seemed to have some pretty good twists, turns and buried elephants to test even the best putters. Course is also well bunkered with some large but fair bunkers. The back nine is where it really gets fun. Being our first found there the were some very tricky holes where you had blind shots with some hidden obstacles such as lakes, creeks and bunkers. Not unplayable at all just very challenging! Pay attention to where the yardage stakes are in the fairways and play to those and you'll be just fine. All in all a good experience and we will definitely go back once their greens are back to normal for a true test of the course.

However, it was definitely a struggle. However, I'd like to add I am fairly new to golf. The greens were well taken care of and so are the fairways. This place can be a little on the pricier side, but you definitely pay for the quality of the course! Draft beer available and great food as well! I have played The Challenge many times over the years and overall enjoyed it and had good…read moreexperiences. However, my most recent round on May 27th left me very disappointed. I am 78 years old and still blessed to be healthy enough to walk 18 holes most days. That day was extremely hot and humid, mid 90's with high humidity. There are no water coolers on the golf course so I carried a bottle of water with me. I came in at the turn and mentioned to the pro shop attendant that it was tough that day and some water on the course would be helpful. He was very understanding and said he would pass the information on. I refilled my bottle and actually got a second one to carry. I got dehydrated on the back nine and actually felt some dizziness. I came back by the pro shop after my round and again mentioned the need for water on the course. The pro shop attendant again was very sympathetic. There was another person behind the counter at the time (I later found out was the head pro) who spoke up and said "we will never have water coolers on this course, they are unsanitary and we have a refreshment cart going around that you could have purchased water from". I told him we saw the refreshment cart one time all day, on our 11th hole right after I had restocked at the turn. His response was "I guess you should have carried more water with you". This kind of customer service is totally not acceptable and left me with a very bad overall feeling about The Challenge. I will continue playing there occasionally as my regular traveling group goes there a few times a year, but the head pro needs to get some training in customer service.

My sons and I always play a few rounds of golf around Christmas time. This golf course was the only…read moreone open on Christmas Eve. The course was not in pristine condition just because of the time of the year. Many of the greens are not visible from the Tee. In fact one of the par 5's , the second shot still is not visible ( drive 241 yards ). They should put a bell on that green. When the golfers are done , " they can ring the bell ". Also crowned greens, ( like a top of a marble ), you can land a perfect shot on the green , but it will roll right off down the slope. You would have to play the course a few times to get it. Spending time with my sons was great, we had a lot of laughs and oh %¥!? also. We had a good time.

Large open layout on most holes with not many hazards to worry about. Very few bunkers on the course but for the ones they do have they could stand a little TLC. Gas powered golf carts.
