This historic site in Greensboro is a gem. The staff( Ryan Wilson and his team ) engaged us with our visit. Intern Jayla was the star!! She provided PowerPoint presentations/ a visit to the Golf Shack / provided historical data about the course / a golf demonstrations. Our organization had an amazing time - we will definitely return. I'm at this course quite a bit. Gillespie has a really inviting feel. I'm not a golfer, but my daughter is. I always feel at ease bringing her to this course. Everyone is always so welcoming. They have a driving range. There is a short game section and putting greens. I enjoy driving my daughter around this course in the golf carts. Never had an issue with their carts. There is a restroom half way through. Make sure you get the code for the doors off the carts. There are fences around the course for privacy. If the grill is open, they have food in the main office. The food has been good throughout the years. Make sure to ask about lessons and tournaments. If you are interested in getting your kids involved, they have First Tee and the PGA Jr Leagues. read more

Playable course. However, do not be deceived into thinking this is 18 hole course. It is not. It is a nine hole course that has been redesigned by placing the Tee boxes in separate areas to constitute holes 10 through 18 which are just the same holes with the Teebox in a different spot. Course was in decent shape and was a fun layout. For only having 9 holes i didn't feel that it was very bunched up. The practice facilities were in good condition for anyone looking to get better, and they had a grass driving range. Wasnt able to play the short course, but it looked very fun. The two men working in the pro shop couldve been a little more friendly to the people coming in, and they dont allow you to take the carts to the range or parking lot. Good experience overall though. read more

Went to this course yesterday (June 7th, 2024) for the TYGA One-Day Tournament. I had only been there once a few years ago, and had not remembered anything about the course, so it was fun to give this course another try. The first thing we did upon arriving to the course was practice on the putting green and purchase a cart. Although the putting green was small with only four cups, I was able to create a decent variety of breaking putts, and the green was in perfect condition. As for carts, the price is the best of any course I've played, including Knights Play Golf Center in Apex. 6 dollars is quite a steal! After putting, we went over to the practice range, which is located on the far end of the property past the short game facility. The turf quality was excellent, which made for some pretty nice fades and draws. Also, for anyone who cares about the range ball brands used, the balls are a mix of Wilson Staff and Marathon balls, with an occasional Strata thrown in the mix, which are all top-quality. The range facility has an upper tee and a lower tee, allowing abundant space for numerous players. The short game facility also met our expectations. Just up the hill from the practice range is a collection of two greens to your right. There were a few balls scattered around, but if you want a comprehensive practice, you most likely need to bring your own. Also, there were no bunkers beside these greens, so we went over to the short pitch-and-putt course nearby to practice. Although we didn't have the time to play all 9 holes of the short course, we could see that the greens and tee boxes were superb. The bunkers were a little packed down and a bit washed-out, but we had gotten storms on Thursday, and the maintenance crew didn't have enough time to rake every single bunker before the tournament. Now, onto the course itself, which is arguably the most unique course I have ever played in the seven years I have played golf. The course itself has nine holes, but two different tee-sets to make "18 holes." We played off of the Yellow Tees, which rounded our distance off at 5100 yards. The boxes on the front nine were easy to handle and I got 39! The boxes on the back, though, were much tougher, being placed behind trees and in cramped corners, and I got a worse 47. The course contains some pretty sharp doglegs and some wild greens, most notably on 4 and 5. The bunkers were well-raked, with the greens being phenomenal for a public course. At this course, the phrase "no two holes are the same" bodes well! After the round, we went to the clubhouse for scoring. While there, I checked out the pro-shop, which was decently stocked with balls and apparel. The attendant was very nice and pointed me to the other room in which scoring was taking place. The only thing that brings this review down from a five-star review to a four-star is the absence of a grill. Who ever thought of a course with NO food options!? The story goes that the grill staff walked out on the job a week ago, which was pretty weird considering the grill was leased to the city of Greensboro. Now, the grill area is pretty much abandoned, with the kitchen equipment left to rot and the wallpaper peeling off. As such, you will need to bring your own snacks if you wish to eat. The pro-shop does have a selection of drinks, including Gatorade, so at least you can be assured that you will be hydrated. Other than the grill being closed without further notice, this course is a gem in bustling Greensboro and I would definitely recommend it to my friends. read more

Just so you know where I'm coming from here, I am a pretty mediocre and infrequent golfer. I have been golfing off and on for 20 years. Some years I will get out 10-15 times, and actually get back in groove of solid respectable hacking, I have a lifetime best 87 to my name, but there have been stretches in my life where I haven't golfed for 2-3 years at a time. Even though I am not looking for a first class experience, I have also been on my fair share of cheap public courses that either pancake flat and lacking any challenge whatsoever, or just so poorly maintained its not even relaxing with huge long patches of dirt down the fairway and the like. Gillespie is great because it always delivers on those minimum requirements of quality grass coverage and variety of holes. I play golf for the camaraderie and fresh air primarily, and more often than not, Im throwing a little liquid refreshment in the bag. (If you know what i'm sayin'!) It seems like golf these days is increasingly a rich mans sport. Its all about the technology and the clubs, and the oneupsmanship of modern life. Gillespie reminds me of a simpler time. If you don't have any intention of paying $50 or more for a round of golf, and are just looking to get away for a few hours and hear some birds and smack a few balls around, I can't recommend Gillespie hard enough. Walking 9 holes at Gillespie on a friday afternoon was a staple of my college experience and one I always look back on with fond memories. read more

I've played hundreds of rounds at Gillespie and--bottom line--it's a solid course at a great price. Conditions range from decent to very good. As noted, the 9 holes have two different tee boxes (to make "18 holes"), and 6 of the holes are fundamentally different (one--a par 5 turned into a par 4, somewhat disastrously, but the rest interestingly). The other three are basically the same front and back. There are a few easy holes (1/10, 13, 17), but most are challenging. The par 5s are true 3-shot holes for all but the longest hitters; slope (both vertical and horizontal) figures interestingly in many holes; and green design is good (although greens tend to run slowish). You can find better courses for more than twice the price, but if you want to play real golf--or just get in a quick nine--this is a good option. read more

Pretty decent course for the money. The management acts like this course is Augusta or Pebble Beach though. Pretty rude, and unless you're one of the guys that sit under the shelter behind the 9th/18th green, you're treated pretty badly. The course was in pretty good shape, with the greens looking arguably the best they've ever looked. Not really any big divots, and the tee boxes were maintained. Make sure you're dressed up, otherwise you'll get called out in front of everybody by management. The course is in a pretty bad area of the city, but you better look like Tiger on Sunday. The grille there is pretty good, grabbing a burger after 18 is a great parting gift. read more

I don't even know where to begin, If I could give this place zero stars I would. No, I'm not a Karen either, just a guy who likes to have fun and play golf. I've played many reputable golf courses in the past, and never have I been let down so much as by this course and the staff (one-course ranger in particular) was extremely disrespectful to my group. Rushing us through the course like it was some PGA-rated golf experience when my younger sister could've kept up the course better. The fairways were decent at best, the tee boxes were cut up, and the greens were the worst greens I, and my group, have ever played on. I don't advise anyone to play on this course if you're new to golf or even extremely experienced. However, I will say that the older course ranger was very kind to me and my group, even gave some of the newer golfers in the group some tips on a good swing. Very nice and respectful man. Going back to that course ranger, he needs to get rid of his "god-complex" and stop harassing the golfers and put some actual work into the course, and maybe then it'd be a nice course to play on. I, personally will never be returning to this course and I hope this review will save others the headache that our group went through. read more
