I can tell you that this is so true. I have a community of parents that are supporting me and my kids. My kids have a class where they feel like everyone is their friend. My kids have teachers and faculty that understand their strengths and weaknesses and help them grow. And best of all, my kids are learning all this with a Christian perspective. I love hearing about their bible classes and chapels or hear them practice their memory work. I am glad to have made this choice for them!

Kifayeh is an incredibly sweet and encouraging woman. While the pool doesn't have any frills, it serves a great purpose in the community. Classes were for 45 minutes, 3 times a week, and are usually pretty small in size. The instructor (or instructors) work at your pace, so you don't have to worry about waiting for the rest of the class to catch up or falling behind.

Transitioning from one school to another is never easy and wasn't a decision we took lightly, especially since we left behind some really wonderful people. That said, my son's move to St. Gerald has been seamless--far better than we expected. His teachers, staff, coaches, and Principal Pape have all been incredibly kind and supportive. The families here have been so inviting, and honestly, that's been the very best part. Let's be honest--every Catholic school in Oak Lawn seems to claim financial needs and asks for extra contributions (all the time even when they have surplus funds). But when you add up tuition and fees, the overall cost ends up being about the same year after year. For us, the value at St. Gerald has been clear. All in all, I'm so glad we made the switch. I look forward to seeing my child finish his elementary school years proudly as a Giant. Go Giants!

With that statement out of the way, the reality is that this school is a shade above public school in terms of education quality. The only difference is you get religion and get to wear an uniform. Otherwise, this school is a joke in terms of education. After COVID hit, we realized what they taught there was very basic and our kids were not being intellectually challenged. Parents at St. Gerald are like a high school clique. Our kids came from another Catholic school that closed and one parent commented how all the children that came from said school should be in their own classroom (separate from her precious St. Gerald legacy child). Some parents here think they are Oak Lawn Royalty because they drive a leased Porsche or second hand luxury vehicle. The snobbery really shows but at the same time you have a large portion of Blue Collar parents who are rude and rough around the edges. Any parent with any sort of perceived power thinks they can talk down to you or make your child feel inferior. The review by James B. pretty much sums up St. Gerald. Nothing really has changed from 2014 to 2020/21 except for a new principal. We never really fit in this school. It's pretty much a babysitting Catholic service. Most of these "Catholic" parents never really go to church on Sundays let alone act Catholic.

I'm a McAuley mom, but I admit I had serious misgivings when my daughter--after shadowing at a…read morenumber of other schools--insisted that she felt McAuley was "exactly right." McAuley was our rival school (I'm an AOL grad) and was, back in the day, noted for being snobby, clique-ish, and "fast." (But one never says nice things about one's rival, does one?) My main concern was that McA was so BIG and I felt--from hearsay--that its athletics program was its focus and my budding actress/writer/academic nerd would be lost. I am happy to say that I was WRONG. My daughter immediately found a group of very nice kids who were also grade-conscious. The drama dept (and this is coming from a Longwood alum, now-closed Longwood having had an A-one drama dept. for generations) put on professional productions. My daughter was nurtured and challenged and she found mentors who truly cared about helping her meet her goals, including a close friendship with a retired Sister of Mercy who has been a great emotional support to her. She loved every minute of her high school experience. Best of all, for my husband and me, is that McAuley reinforced our Roman Catholic values. Our daughter was given service opportunities and got a lot out of her Kairos retreat. The theology department is traditional in the best sense of the word: they demonstrate to the students how to live as followers of Christ. My daughter thrived at McAuley. She got into the college of her choice, and is starting this next phase of her life with humor, self-confidence and optimism. I am sorry that one of the other reviewers had such a bad experience at McA. I know that since she attended, the administration has changed, so maybe a lot of graduates made the same complaints which the new staff/admin has tried to address. But at least the reviewer will have some insight when she helps her children pick a school. I hope her kids have the same experience my daughter had, albeit at a different school.

McAuley claims to teach women how to be independent but it does the opposite. The girls are told they don't need men for anything! Well, except to go to prom..then you need a male date. The school is much more concerned with their image than they are with the students. Yay volleyball! What about academics?
