This time, we booked an excursion that not only went here, but to a hatchery and glacier gardens. This was our last stop on our excursion and our allotted time here was extremely limited. We did the 1 mile hike to the falls, speed walking the entire way. The trail was mostly flat and people of all ages could easily walk it. We also were able to do another short hike to a photo point where you can see both Mendenhall glacier and Nugget falls. If you're on a cruise, and want to have several experiences at one port, I recommend booking a combo tour such as this. The only downside is the time constraints.

Due to the delayed arrival of out cruise boat, the Visitors Center was closed by the time we arrived but we were still able to make the most of our adventure. We took the 2 mile round trip path to see Nugget Falls. The path, though muddy was mostly flat. The base of the falls was sandy, but you can get fairly close the falls and the water. Not the best view of the glacier from here. On our return, we took the 0.3 mile path to Picture Point to better view the glacier. There were bathrooms available but once the sun sets, it gets dark quick. We waited at the share ride pick up spot for our Lyft to take us back. Uber is not available here

If you WANT to see bears, take an excursion. This is a beautiful trail with history--Alaska's first road. There is less elevation gain but the views are spectacular. If you take your kids with you, make sure they understand the concept of how painful it can be if they decide to walk off the trail when climbing up steep grades. The hike is really not that difficult. Its a pretty short day hike of around 5 miles round trip and i believe to spot we went to with the group was around 800 feet of elevation gain. I found it to be a relatively easy trail but the people in my tour group were slow and many found it to be challenging. There are some chains to help you get up some of the uneven spots. Of course as with any hike be prepared, have water, snacks, good shoes. I would definitely come back here in the future but I would want to finish the hike all the way up to the top. Did not really see anyone else out on the trail other than our tour group. This was a weds morning.

Note that this is a flat and easy trail with about 50 percent of it being boardwalk and the other half being stone. The trail starts at the end of Evergreen Street (close to the crossing of Pine). If you so choose, you can hop off the trail and weave your way back to downtown. Along the trail you'll see snowcapped mountains, waterfalls, a river and lush rainforest-like surroundings. Ah! Breath in the fresh Alaskan air! Free entertainment! This was definitely one of the highlights during our time in Juneau.

It was truly one of the coolest and most unforgettable experiences I've ever had with brown bears. I felt completely safe the entire time, and it was absolutely incredible to watch these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Watching them fish was surprisingly fast, sometimes even hilarious! Wild Coast made the whole experience feel both thrilling and respectful to the wildlife. Wild Coast Excursions is the best opportunity to see bears in Juneau and probably Alaska!
