It was a beautiful morning! We immediately headed to the loop trail. We appeared to be the only ones there for at least an hour as we walked to various observation decks. We made it to the 3rd one before deciding not to make the climb up to Father Brown's Cross. I think we could have done it, but the trail started getting a bit more rugged as it made that turn upward. I could see the cross, but as I was saying earlier... we were the only ones up in that wilderness. I was concerned about what we may find. Lol! The views at each observation deck were stunning. The air is so fresh up there. We saw all kinds of birds flying around. I did see a family of Robins. I'd never seen one before, and they are bigger than I thought. Of course, there was the occasional Bald Eagle sighting. They are all over Alaska in their natural habitat. There are trails for all different hiking levels. I did see a sign for a trail that leads you down the mountain to Basin Road. So, you don't necessarily have to take the tram to get there. It advises that you wear hiking boots and bring plenty of water because it's a difficult trail. There were many obstacles along the loop trail such as large tree roots and very high stairs that were built in to get you through the steeper parts. There are some beautifully carved totem polls as well, and signs warning of poisonous plants. It's a great family adventure. I learned a lot along the way. It's a must for anyone who loves nature.

It was truly one of the coolest and most unforgettable experiences I've ever had with brown bears. I felt completely safe the entire time, and it was absolutely incredible to watch these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Watching them fish was surprisingly fast, sometimes even hilarious! Wild Coast made the whole experience feel both thrilling and respectful to the wildlife. Wild Coast Excursions is the best opportunity to see bears in Juneau and probably Alaska! The day trip was very well-organized from start to finish, with a float-plane ride from Juneau to the island, a short hike to the creek-side bear viewing area, several hours watching bears, a nice boxed lunch and a return plane trip back to Juneau. Having grown up in Juneau, our guide, Peter, is very wilderness-savvy and adept at sharing his knowledge with his clients. He kept our group well-informed and about bear behavior and let us know what to expect from the experience while we were out there and afterwards shared photos and videos of our adventure. Disappointing and Overpriced Halibut Charter Experience Our…read moreexperience was poor to average. We are a family of four with two girls, ages 11 and 14, and this charter was not a good fit for us this past August, 2025. We were surprised to learn that guides were not allowed to help reel in the fish until they could actually see it at the water line. When fishing for halibut, the line is dropped over 300 feet with a two-pound weight to reach the bottom. Between the weight, the depth, and the rocky waves, it was nearly impossible for our daughters--and admittedly myself--to reel in a fish without assistance. For the price we paid, and after several conversations with the owner before booking, we were disappointed this was never explained upfront. It would have been helpful to know this charter was not ideal for families with kids or teens. We were also frustrated by the lack of basic amenities. The toilet on board was broken, leaving only a bucket with no toilet paper as the option. For almost $2,000, this felt unacceptable. No bottled water or beverages were provided, and the only snack was a single granola bar for a five-hour trip. For a premium charter, this fell far short of expectations. Another disappointment was with the fish processing. We paid the owner in advance for our three fish to be filleted and shipped home, only to be asked again for our credit card later to cover separate shipping charges. This was never made clear and felt misleading. Lastly, we did not catch our limit, and both the guide and captain repeatedly mentioned that a large fishing competition had just taken place in the area over the previous three days. Their exact words were: "It's not good fishing today, it's been way overfished the last few days and it will take about two weeks to get the halibut back to this area." It left us questioning why guests were still being booked at full price when conditions were known to be poor. In the end, we spent a lot of money for what turned out to be an average experience, with limited access to fish and very little in the way of customer service.

One of the things we look forward to the most is a fishing/sightseeing trip with Rum Runner Charters. Captain Chris and crew have always come through for us. My only complaint is that they always seem to position my wife on the side of the boat that has the largest halibut. Oh well. We highly recommend Rum Runner Charters to anyone looking to fully experience the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska.

After our shore excursion on the glacier, we were wandering around town, looking for something to…read morefill a few hours. After visiting Devils brewery and the Amalga distillery (both worth a visit, btw), we took a peek on Trip Advisor for nearby activities and this showed up. It was a short block and a half from the distillery, so we walked there. The door was locked, but we called the number on the door and the owner was happy to drive from her home and meet us. I was the only person in our group of 4 that had previous experience with an escape room, so she suggested we do Espionage 1. She clearly explained how the game would work and even went upstairs to the bar to order us some drinks to enjoy during our one-hour game. Everyone in our group was able to contribute to the clue-solving and it was a challenging room. We had to ask for several clues along the way and were able to earn some additional clues by doing silly tasks that were fun. Overall, it was a completely entertaining and fun way to spend an hour with friends. If you're done shopping the touristy shops and are looking for a fun off-the-beaten-path experience, I highly recommend this place!!!!!
