The ambience is nice, with the old windmill and outdoor seating. Indoors, it smelled of old beer, which is to be expected I suppose. We are big fans of IPAs so were happy to see it offered here! We ordered one from the bartender, however it did not really taste like an IPA. It was a bit disappointing with a bitter taste. Perhaps the bartender gave us the wrong beer? We ended up not finishing it and decided to go elsewhere to grab a bite.
A brewery by a classic windmill! What is not to like. Beers were tasty. Also got the food platter and bitterballen. Fast service. Can sit outside too.
Google led us to Brouwerij't IJ on a recent rip to Amsterdam, and I am so glad that it did! This spot is super cool with a chill ambiance and TONS of beer to choose from. We truly could have spent the whole day here if we had the time! Their staff was very helpful and assisted us in understanding the menu and making selections. We loved the beer and saw lots of snacks coming out that looked super good! Definitely make the stop - it's awesome here!
What a gem! We came here on a hot summer day and it was so busy. The service is quick and painless. There's one line for beer and there's one line for food. We grabbed a seat inside (first come first serve for both indoor and outdoor) and opted for the beer flight + cheese board with sausage. The beer flight was great! I really enjoyed most of the beers featured in it. My favorite was the blondie. The cheese was so yummy and honestly the sausage was my favorite.
Is there anything more quintessentially Dutch than having a beer in a windmill? We came to Brouwerij 't IJ twice during our stay in Amsterdam. We found the walk pleasant and the beer tasty. I was big big fan of their Victoria's Secret Pale Ale. During our first visit, we planned to order a flight - but apparently flights are only served before 5pm, and it was almost 6pm. They do, however, offer smaller pours. One of my favorite things about beer in Europe in general is their standard pour is smaller than the standard American pour. Thus, you get to try more! We paired our pours with a snack platter - the perfect arrangement of pickles, cheese, meat, and bread. My only complaint was seeing how many unfinished snack boards were being thrown away! We didn't have any issues destroying ours - I was an especially big fan of the warm sausage. If it's nice, the outside space is packed. If it's rainy, the inside is packed. Either way, it was busy during both visits, but we managed to snag the same two bar stools each time. Just be prepared to be patient if you're coming with a large group. I LOVE their ostrich mascot and their array of merch. You see Brouwerij 't IJ advertised all over, even outside of Amsterdam, so I was a happy patron to visit twice.
Awesome spot! A truly nice place to drink a beer and have some fun with friends. This is a very rustic spot with no table service. You get your beer and apps yourself and you find a place to sit. Plenty of outdoor seating available but the wind was too rough to enjoy. We sat inside and enjoyed some good beer and Bitterballen.
We came here just because we saw it had a windmill. Little did we know that we were going on the day they were doing "Oktoberfest." Place became packed really fast! Plenty of outdoor seating too. The beer select was limited this particular day since it was an event. They had a small menu of tapas and charcuterie. They also had a cart/truck making food. Beer was good. It's what you'd expect from a brewery.
Nice scene! What did I get I ordered the Zatte beer and had the cheese and sausage combo. I really liked the beer. The cheese and sausage was a lot for 1 person but it was a great combo. I didn't try any other food. Environment Nice environment with outdoor seating. This brewery is located right under a windmill. There are a number of seats inside, there is bar seating as well. Niceness of the staff Ordering was confusing for me... You need to order and then sit down, it is a more help yourself service style. For the food, you order at the snack window and collect it there as well. The beer you order at the bar and you need to collect it there as well Dollar It was decent and reasonable for me. The beer was 3.5 a cup and the cheese and sausage was around 7 I think (I don't remember) Yes I would, I like the vibe.
Fantastic brewery located next to one of the eight windmills still left in Amsterdam. Come before 5pm if you're interested in getting a flight, which is a flight of their top five beers. Personally, I feel the flight was expensive as flights generally are, but still worth the experience to try more beers! The boar meat sausage was amazing btw!
Great Amsterdam brewery with a good selection of beers and small bites. They do offer a sampling paddle and multiple sizes for their beers. The serving Staff were friendly and helpful in making selections. There is in door and outdoor seating; dog friendly. Clean restrooms downstairs. Cash and cards accepted. This was my favorite beer while visiting Amsterdam so I also purchased a sweatshirt- they have merchandise for sale. Try their beer and better yet stop by their brewery!

It was a grand time with great beer and some uniquely netherland food. Delicious and a fun place to hangout. Good crowd and great energy. A must stop if you are a beer person! read more
The boodle and I recently visited Amsterdam. We love breweries and when we found out about this brewery in/adjacent to a windmill, we knew we had to check it out! We arrived 7 minutes after the place opened, and it was already packed in there. This is clearly a hang out spot for many people. I ordered the flight of 5 beers for 9 euro (note: you will not get to choose your flight - it is predetermined). I can't remember the names of what I tried, but I got a good tasting of an IPA, a red, a wheat, a stout, and something else. All were very good! Service here is quick, but you'll need to go to the bar to get it. There is also a small snack and swag bar if you need something to much on or a souvenir to take home. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a brewery with a unique setting and a lot of beer options. read more

I'm not in the business of recommending where people go in Amsterdam and what they do with their time, and for sure, where I'm staying is away from the prime entertainment district. So it'd take something pretty special for me to recommend the effort to getting here, which wouldn't be so awful from where all of the tourists are hanging out. You want to spend a few hours here quaffing some of the fine brews and eating the good food. Time very well spent, and the beers are fantastic! Food too. All in the shadow of a giant, ancient windmill that serves at least as part of the brewery here. What else could improve this? A nice canal to look at? Check, has that. Delicious meats in tube form and aromatic cheeses to partake with your fine beers? Check. A nice patio with umbrellas and picnic seating? Check. If you come: closes at 7:00 p.m. sharp and there'll likely be a crowd when they do. We showed up at 4:00 on a Monday and there was plenty of seating. You couldn't get me to Amsterdam's Heineken Experience with a team of horses pulling me. I know what that beer tastes like--canal water! This, Brouwerij 't IJ beer is the real thing. read more

A brewery at the base of a windmill and it was right in town. Really cool place to take a break. We had a few rounds and some snacks. The IPA and the trippel were the ones we liked most. It was quite crowded when we visited, though it thinned out a bit once the tour departed. Outdoor and indoor tables for seating. read more
English tours are held Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 3:30. Tickets are 5 Euros and it includes a beer of your choice. You can't purchase tickets online so I would suggest you get there early on the day of the tour as it is first come, first serve, and their tours have a max of 20. We got there at around 1 and there were still tickets available. We decided to get a flight of some of their beers and order some snacks. We had the dried sausage and the raw sausage (it's been cured). I was hesitant about the raw sausage at first but I actually really liked it! It reminded me of a salty version of beef tartare. I could have done without the dried sausage. The texture was too hard, which made it really difficult to eat. If you've tried the food and beer, and you still need more ways to kill time, there's plenty of chances for photo ops outside with the windmill (which, by the way has no relation to the brewery)! Even if you don't get a chance to take the tour (which was alright), the brewery itself is definitely worth checking out. read more

This was my favorite brewery I visited in Amsterdam by far. The setting of outdoor seating overlooking a canal and a picturesque windmill cannot be beat. The beer was great and there were plenty of options for whatever kind of beer tickles your fancy. The cheap sausage and cheese board available was what really set this place apart though. The abbey cheese was soft and delicious and went well with the celery salt they recommended. The sausage was spiced wonderfully and I can't think of a better snack to go with some delicious beer and great friends. read more
Order your beer and snacks at the counter and then find an available table. There's always a lot of people here no matter what time of day it is. Nice spacious bar with a giant windmill. My favorite snacks were the Abbey Cheese and Dried Pepper Sausage. read more

Very nice and characteristic place, if you have your hotel in the city center prepare yourself for a little (30 min) walk. The place is always busy but worth it Very good beer, it's a brewery, you can also eat some "snack' as sausage, local cheese, or boiled egg and penauts! read more

Our local friends brought us to this brewery for a couple of drinks. This place was pretty cool and situated under an old windmill. The drinks were good and reasonably priced. We didn't try any of the food. Service was fast and drinks came out cold. We recommend visiting this place instead of going on the Heineken brewery tour. It is a little bit outside of central Amsterdam but the tram stops right outside. read more
Don't look for that brewery inside a windmill.. Despite what everybody says, including the tour guides, it is not inside a windmill.. It is actually NEXT to a windmill. Now that we got that out of the way, this place is AWESOME! The atmosphere is great with an open layout. They got lots of big tables, which make for good conversation! So make sure you are feeling social when you come here, because you are going to share a table with some strangers. Their beers are good. The day we were there, they ran out of their several beers. So I ended up tasting a Triple and a Double. I ended up having the Triple (Belgian style blond) with about 8% alcohol. They also had several IPAs for hops-lovers. They got some snack foods and we ended up pairing our beers with in-house roasted peanuts. We met some lovely people sitting on either side of our table so our experience was great. If you are a tourist like we were and you do not have a bicycle, don't worry. This place was easily accessible by tram! It's a must-visit when you are in Amsterdam!!!! read more

Brewery is out of the way, but Yelp reviews pushed me into coming here. Favorite thing about this place is the vibe. Met some great people, and good to chillax' while it rained buckets outside. Beers: Beer flight provides chance to try 5 of 7 beers. All of them sure beat the other commercialized in town! Zummerblonde is not available in tasting size but is definitely. Food: No main entrees, but cheese and sausage small plates are available. Did not try but others liked it. Bonus: Get to see a real Dutch windmill and get your drink on at the same time. Bottom Line: Make the trip here. Worth picking over the alternate overly commercialized experience. read more

Most serious beer drinkers in Amsterdam drink Belgian beer. It's just a fact of life, folks; Heineken tastes pretty good in this town, but..yeah. It's Heineken. Enter Brouweij, a Dutch brewery that defies the odds. They have a tasting room/outdoor patio as part of the brewery, which usually fills up with cheese and sausage munching locals by 3, 4 pm. They usually have 5 beers on tap, and 2-3 seasonal bottled ones, with a glass running you 2-2.50 Euros. If you're new, try their flight of 5 for 5 Euros. In my opinion, the Itwij is the best - a 7% wheatbier that's great for an afternoon relaxer. Cool windmill too, and away from the hustle of downtown A-dam. read more
Skip the Heineken crap and drink real bier here at Brouweij 't IJ. We visited twice in our three days in Amsterdam! We sampled four or five different brews (the sampler had been stopped an hour or so before we arrived on day 1 for some reason). I went with an IPA and a black IPA. Wow, both were really outstanding and rare to find home-brewed IPAs anywhere in Europe. This brewery has six or more local brews on tap every day and surely there is something to please all bier connoisseurs' pallets. On our second visit, with a local friend (her birthday) I just drank the outstanding black IPA. read more
If the weather is nice, this is the perfect place to enjoy a local brew in Amsterdam! The setting is idyllic, next to a traditional windmill and along the canal. There are about 6 varieties of fresh-brewed beers to taste and buy by the glass for under 3 euros each! There is also a small variety of snacks to go with the beers. My favorites were the Natte and Zatte beers for 2.40 euros each. It is important to note they do NOT accept credit card here, so come with cash. You may also like to buy a souvenier t-shirt for 20 euros. If you are up for a relaxing walk, this is about 30 minutes walk from Central Amsterdam; otherwise, it is an easy tram or bus ride. Outside the bar, there are many picnic tables to sit and enjoy the beers. read more
For all you microbrewery enthusiasts, Brouweriji is a must visit when travelling to Amsterdam. The brewery sits inside an original windmill, and offers a wide variety of beers from local vendors in and around Amsterdam. The brewery also offers appetizers to accompany your favorite beer. i visited this brewery 3 times during my 6 day visit to beautiful Amsterdam, definitely a favorite drinking hole among the locals. Just wish it stayed open on Friday night past 8PM, but it closes, not sure why. Anyway, what a great place to have a cold brew. read more
This was on our must-visit list before we arrived in Amsterdam as tourists, and it definitely did not disappoint. We were staying in the city center and decided to rent bicycles to get to Brouwerij 't IJ, but you could also get there via public transportation. We enjoyed the beer, people watching, and beautiful view of the HUGE windmill. read more
This place is an awesome stop for fans of beer, especially Belgian Style ales. Unfortunately we weren't able to make a tour, but we sat in the beer garden for a couple of hours and had a great time. Definitely recommended for beer lovers. If you're staying in the central part of Amsterdam it's a little bit of a haul, but the trams will get you close enough to walk. read more
Thanks to the pouring rain, we ran into the brewery straight from the cab hoping to check out the windmill after the rain stops. Well, we never made it to the actual windmill. The flights of beer and delicious side dishes kept us long enough at the brewery that we lost track of what we were here for. Great locally brewed beer on tap and cool selections of IPA and others. Even the crowd makes this place more likable. Now can I just move to Amsterdam? read more

My new favorite Belgian brewery. I hope to see your stuff in the SU someday! The brewery is located inside of an abandoned windmill, a massive one. The place is packed with local's non-stop as it is popular but not near the touristy areas in Amsterdam. Beers are excellent and they do have a tasting option. read more

We were here on a saturday afternoon and luckily got one of the last seats inside. Outside it was packed even more. So the noise level at this place is really high. You literally have to scream to talk with your neighbor. The place is self-service. We had the tasting paddle, so you get 5 different beers in 5 glasses of 1dl. Unfortunately you don't know which beer is which one on the menu. They just told us, it starts from the left to the right with the weakest one. So the last one on the right was a really strong one with like 9 vol %. I could hardly drank that one, it wasn't my cup of tea (or beer in that case;)). They also have some sausage and cheese to order with your beer. All told, it's a nice spot to taste some locally brewed beers in Amsterdam. read more
Skip the Heineken Brewery Tour and visit this brewery instead. There's no table service so you order drinks at the bar, pay and grab a seat at the bar or at one of the tables inside or outside. There's a separate ordering counter for some food, it's not a full menu but just a few snacks. Beers were around 3-4 euros. You can also get a flight of samples (5 beers - Plzen, Natte, Zatte, Ijwit and IPA) for 10 euros. They had about 10 different kinds of beers, ranging from 4.7-9% ABV, when we went. You can't really miss it, there's a windmill outside and it's conveniently located right by a tram stop by the canal. read more

This place was okay. It had good beers but the way they do their tastings is something I'm not used to. I'm used to being able to pick any five beers from the menu for a flight. Here, you can only do them by menu order. This left some unfinished beers in my flight. Would have preferred to pick my own. Other than that, I did find some beers I liked and stayed a while and had some snacks. I recommend getting the combi with your flight/beers. It's easy to share and has peppered sausage and cheese with a dill salt. read more

Beers under a windmill? I'm in! Came here around 3pm on a Friday and they were bustling. We were told they do tours of the brewery around 3 which is why we went at this time, but unfortunately the tour was all sold out. Definitely get there earlier if you are interested in this. My friends and I got flights of beer and hung out inside (the outside was all full). The beers were great, the place was lively, and the employees were nice. During a bike tour the following day, we were taken here for a beer too and again this place was packed! They have so many different types of beers for everyones tastes and I really loved the vibe. Highly recommend this awesome place. read more

The beer is excellent. I strongly recommend The Brouwerij T' IJ IPA but perhaps buy a bottle elsewhere. My bf and I came here at around 4 pm while on vacation. We sat inside and noticed the lack of music. I started playing a song by "The Head and the Heart" (calm, relaxed music) and a server came by and asked me to turn it off. I asked if they played music here and she said "no" and that they didn't allow it. She said that they close at 4 pm and aren't a "party place." I think establishments who play music aren't necessarily party scenes, but music is definitely something people enjoy. Beer and music sound like a nice combo to me read more
