Loved this windmill brewery. The sheep cheese and dry sausage was my favorite. I pretty much died and went to heaven! All prices are so reasonable as well. I believe you can get a cheese and sausage set for about 8-8.50 euro and beer ranges from 5-12 euro. It was busy, but it's amazing how quick the service was. They speak English as well. We went because the weather was cold and rainy outside so it was a nice thing to do! Would go back in a heart beat. read more

In a city where most bars and restaurants only serve Heineken and Amstel Light, its great to find some good beer (especially a decent IPA) in Amsterdam. Brouwerij 't IJ is a little off the main drag if you're staying in the city center, but it's a nice walk or short bus ride to this part of town. I came here during ADE week and the place was pretty busy, but it was easy to snag a spot at the bar. The bartenders aren't overly friendly and you have to kind of flag them down, but I didn't mind it too much. They also had another window where you could buy little snacks like meat and cheese, and put together your own little charcuterie feast. Beers were around 3 euro, which is decent for the area. The best bang-for-your-buck for real Belgian-style beer in all of Amsterdam. Five stars for the beer and ambiance; two-and-a-half stars for the tour. We've been on several beer tours, and this one was lacking. Stand still in one uneventful room for 20 minutes, walk downstairs to another boring room for 10 minutes, then walk back upstairs for another 10 minutes. The info was good, but overall it just wasn't engaging. BUT... On the tour they give you a token for a free beer. And the beer is fantastic. After your free one, you'll want another (and another) and you won't go broke -- it's all unbelievably cheap (2-3 Euro), and there are 5 or 6 different varieties to choose from. All delicious. Try a flight to see which one(s) you like best, then pull up a bench and hang out in the packed pub area, surrounded by vintage beer bottles lining the walls. Spend an extra few Euro for some sausage and cheese; the cheese is made from goat's milk, and the goats eat the leftover wort from the beer-making process. The best place I visited during my 24 hour layover !!! The outdoor bench seating allows for you to mingle with other tourists and locals while bonding over their amazing in house brewed beer, while awing at the fact that you are drinking authentic freshly brewed beer in an old windmill. This place is a right of passage when you come to Amsterdam. Where else will you be able to sip beer in a windmill?? Not only is the beer extremely cheap and tasty, the light bite selections are delectable. We had the cheese platter and the raw sausage. Both were unbelievable. A brewery with a windmill? Yes please! Since Minnesota is known for a craft brewery on almost every block (look us up, we have TONS of craft breweries and I have 2 friends that run 2 popular ones), we were excited to find out that Amsterdam has one of their own. The brews are not as hoppy as we get at home, but they do very well. It was a little amusing to see the old beer bottles on display with a few from Minnesota and Wisconsin gracing the shelves. A little giggle and a hiccup and I was feeling at home. I am so glad we didn't do the Heineken expereince as this was so much more robust. People actually talking and hanging out with each other, we felt very comfortable and had a blast. We decided to try the cheese with the celery salt and my, my. . . this was very tasty and went really well with the brews and atmosphere. First off - do the tour! It's worth it since it comes with a free beer:) Second, this is definitely a great place to sit, drink and chat with locals all day. There are plenty of tourists, but if you come on a weekday, it's full of locals too. And, they love to chat. The staff is pretty darn friendly; I think I had must have had a chat with each and every one of them during the time I was there. Beers are cheap! Way cheap! They're far cheaper than any bar in central Amsterdam. If you're still trying to figure out where to stay, I suggest finding a place near here; so, at least you have a cheap spot for beer. Use the train and bus system to mosey on over to the touristy areas. read more

Double IPA + empty stomache = double vision! Luckily you can order some small snacks though: cheese, cured meat, nothing fancy but then again we're talking beer here! Lots! The atmosphere is really relaxed, a nice mixture of expats, tourists and locals. A friend of mine insisted I had to come here whilst in Amsterdam. Part of that is the novelty of beer in a windmill, but it was worth the trip from our hotel to an area slightly off the beaten path. The outdoor tables were bustling when we got there, but my brother and I were able to claim the end of one. The crowd had taken all of the flight glasses from the bar, so instead we just got two beers each to share. The Natte and Zatte were both good, but we preferred the IPA and the Zomerblond. The Plzen was predictably soapy, so unless you're into that, focus on the others. The Ijwit was also pretty good. I'm not a beer connoisseur by any means but suggested this pub because it had great reviews and is located right next to a big windmill. My son said it was one of the best pubs he's ever visited (and he's gone to quite a few). It's only open from 2-8 pm and it's packed. We were lucky to get a table even though the bar was full and people were standing outside. They offer an assortment of their special brews and we got the sample to taste test a few. Cheese and sausage can be purchased to nibble on. Lots of locals so it's not your typical tourist trap. I hope to visit Amsterdam again and will definitely make time for this pub read more

We never learned how to properly pronounce the name of this brewery, but they had great beer and a cool facility. The brewery is located a good distance from the main tourist part of town. We took the bus from the central train station to reach it. There was a good sized crowd and they had a large outdoor seating area. The staff was friendly and explained what each beer was like. read more

If you visit Amsterdam this is one of the things to see especially if you love beer. When you walk in the smell of the yeast is a step into a whole other dimension. It hits you full in the face like the smell you can reach out and grab. It smells of baking bread or roasted grains etc. As we were there in in late Sept when there was a bit of chill in the air this location was the perfect spot to just hang out for a couple drinks and a smoke. There are a selection of various Belgian style ales which are made right on premises. I really liked the sampler that you can buy with five different ales. It helps you to select a particular drink which you might be more in the mood for. I stuck with one of the lighter citrusy ales and it was perfect. The tour is a bit anti climactic to the ale but I think worth the time and also nice as you receive a token for a glass of beer of your choice. Stop here! This place is unique. Another nice bonus is that there is a windmill immediately next door which towers over the brewery and that, for a tourist like myself makes a visit here even the more worthwhile. It is a bit of a stretch of the legs from Rembrandtplein where we stayed more in the center of town but for me it was a nice walk and refreshing. read more

The beer types we've tried were amazing, the atmosphere was gorgeous and it was a perfect finish for our day full of sightseeing. The only demerits: it really closes at 8pm and it only serves very little beer snacks (eg sausage - just it, without bread) and we've been not used to it. But nevertheless it was tasty! read more

I had heard so much of this place both from friends and yelpers. I don't believe the hype. Local brewery with their own brews on tap - that is great. But unfortunately, the beers didn't appeal to me. If you love Belgian/Dutch style you might enjoy 't IJ. They have a great raspberry brew though - try that one! It is EASY to find bars that serves other beer than your usual Heineken - just search Yelp. Either go for local Dutch, Belgian or worldwide - just take a pick. If you are in the neighbour hood - fine but I would walk the extra mile if I don't just love Belgian style. Outdoor seating in the sun. Share tables with strangers. I came here as a recommendation of a friend who loves drinking and having a good time. I was pleasantly surprised by how peaceful it was there. You can sit at long tables outside (good for groups) or sit indoors if it is too cold or rainy outside. They are open every single day, no matter what! That said, it's only open from like 2pm to 8pm, so it is best to go for some day-drinking. They have a solid selection of beer to choose from (only beer, sorry!) and for a good price. The beers have much more flavor and pack more of a punch than say, Heineken--haha. They also serve small cheese and meat plates. I didn't try these, but it's the only food items they serve. I have had the pleasure of visiting Brouwerij t' IJ three times. I have always had a wonderful time and enjoyed all their fine beers. First, you are sitting underneath a gorgeous historic windmill. I believe that this is the only one left in Amsterdam. Second, they brew some awesome beers that are very affordable. Third, they have outdoor seating and it is easy to meet people and share the Amsterdam experience. I have met some awesome people from all over the world. Fourth...why do you need a fourth? It's quite nice to find a local brewery in Amsterdam. A lot of the beer served at bars and pubs in Amsterdam is either Heineken or Belgian beer. Therefore finding this place gave us an opportunity to sample some Dutch beer. The place is rather big. There's a lot of seats inside, and even more outside. It's definately an afternoon kind of thing, with opening hours from 2 in the afternoon till 8 in the evening. Which is really affects the atmosphere; a very down-to-earth with a bit of family-outing feel to it. There's a long range of different beers to choose from and with different style. All in all I thought most were a tad too boring. The most interesting being the Himbeer - an imitation of a Belgian kriek with raspberries. read more

This place is so fun!! If the windmill alone doesn't win you over than the beer certainly will!!! We got a flight so we could try a multiple before choosing. Highly recommend their IPA and Columbus beer but be warned the Columbus is 9% alcohol!! We didn't get any food but it looked yummy. Just little snack food so get lunch beforehand. This is a super unique brewery in the a quiet outskirt neighborhood of Amsterdam. It sits underneath a large, old 16th century windmill that gives it amazing character. This is a very good spot to go to while in Amsterdam for some local brews. I have been there on several occasions and only have one complaint. If I was rating the place for beer alone it would have been 4 Stars, but you need to have a server and they have all been less than helpful during all my visits there. Not sure if it's bc we are speaking English rather than Dutch, but there is always a clear difference between the service to the Dutch speaking tables and those that speak English. Just an observation. Will definitely try it again this. Beer is good. Food is average. read more

This brewery is easy to reach on the 10 tram line. It's in a windmill so you can't miss it and the building has tons of character. You order your brew from the bar in the center of the room, and if you desire a snack like cheese or different types of sausage, you order at the window. I really liked the Zatte, the Belgian tripel but the Columbus was mine and my husband's favorite. This place will be packed in the after work hours, even in the middle of the week, so get there early or you'll be standing the whole time or relegated to the picnic tables outside (which isn't so fun in the winter!). read more

I don't mind waiting 15 minutes in line for a few beers, but I don't like getting yelled at by a cranky bartender because he didn't understand the order. They speak perfect english, so I would expect them to understand it as well. The beer is great, reasonably priced, and the food is fantastic for bar snacks.
