I visited for the first time today, and I was prepared for a little New England crustiness based on prior reviews, but the two ladies there couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful. The old building is charming. The selection of cotton quilting fabric is huge. The fabric is logically arranged by theme and color. There are a few selections of garment fabrics and upholstery fabrics. This is not a discount store, but the prices are fair and reasonable. I can highly recommend the store. Check the hours before you go. read more

Belittling, condescending customer service. I came in to buy milliner needles for an embroidery project -- I heard they were useful for attempting large French knots. The woman working there (the older of the two) asked if I needed help, and I told her what I was looking for. She proceeded to make a big show of never having heard of such needles. After we both scanned their selection, she looked them up on her phone. When her phone clearly showed her that I wasn't making up a completely new product, she acted surprised. She tried to sell me a pack of Clover needles, which I have. I grabbed some chenille needles. While I was picking out some floss I heard her ask her coworker if she'd ever heard of milliner needles. Her coworker had, to which the woman again acted over-the-top surprised. When she rang me out I pulled out my card and she informed me they had a $10 minimum purchase for cards. No problem, I said. I'll just buy something else. When I picked out a bolt of fabric, she said "this will bring you up to the minimum" in the most condescending tone. Even me declining a bag and putting the items into my purse seemed to illicit a smirk from her. I was friendly, polite, and respectful -- the way I treat everyone. In return I left this business feeling frustrated and embarrassed. Really, the only one who should be embarrassed is the woman who treated me like I was too stupid to be there. read more

The selection of fabrics ranges from beautiful solids, to Japanese prints, to many novelty prints. The quality is far superior to Joanne's. This is a must-see experience for any loves fabrics! My wife and I came in for the first time in over a dozen years (we'd been living away from the area), and it's much the same as I remembered -- a creaky old mill building jam packed with a splendid selection of fabric. The prices have gone up a bit, but they're still better than the chains and the few remaining department stores with any cloth at all. If you require bright lighting, muzak, tiled floors and shopping mall ambiance, the Textile Mill isn't for you. One significant change over the decade is that they've pretty much repositioned themselves as a quilting store (deliberately so, according to a staffer), and the fabric selection reflects the change. While the selection of rug fabrics is still good and there's a decent rack of embroidery floss, the possibilities for dresses, prom gowns, curtains, costumes and other such fabric ranges are now quite limited. If you're a quilter -- which my wife is -- you're in luck. If you're looking to make a dress out of anything but cotton quilting fabrics or the handful of dark velveteen bolts available, you might keep the nearest Joanne's in mind. Like a couple other reviewers, we found the staff inattentive. *I* was asked if I needed help (the "what the heck is a MAN doing in a fabric store??" syndrome, no doubt, something to which I'm accustomed), but my wife was in the clear sightline of another staffer, waiting patiently for the staffer to acknowledge her, which she did upon my wife's second "Excuse me?" Upon my wife letting her know that she was a local, and had patronized the store from youth up until our move to Boston, the staffer warmed up considerably, which following another reviewer's comment leads me to wonder whether the staff deliberately distinguishes between "Our Gang" and "Strangers We Don't Know." They never have accepted credit cards, so make sure to have cash in hand! read more

I have been a customer here since 1975 and watched three generations of owners take charge one-by-one. I have liked all three. They have great fabrics at great prices. The building used to be a baby carriage manufacturer and has all the creaky, wooden floors of such a facility. I find it charming. I miss the wider selections of garment fabrics dearly, but the industry has changed on the wholesale level. It's not that they're not buying them by choice, it's that they *can't* buy them, which is a pity. They know their stuff. Since I am a long-time customer, I cannot judge how they treat non-longtime-customers, but I've never seen them be anything but kind and helpful with anyone. They are not effusive. They are old-fashioned. They use the same "harvest gold", rotary-dial, corded wall phone I had growing up. Never a computer. No credit cards. No voicemail. They are frozen in time. The pluses of this business far outweigh any negatives. I will shop there forever. read more

I have been quilting for 40 years and this is the best quilt fabric store for miles around. I have to drive a good bit to get there, but it's always one of my favorite places to go and any quilter worth her salt knows about it and loves it. One word of advice....don't bring your husband. You will want to take your time and take it all in w/o feeling rushed. read more

This place has a ton of fabric!! The selection is way better than any place like Joannes! There are sooooo many novelty cotton prints you won't find anywhere else. However, the staff is quite rude. Hidden away in Greenfield, MA, is this cute textile shop. It is in a converted small factory or warehouse, complete with creaky wooden boards. The selection here really is fantastic. The staff was very helpful. Good options for people wanting to work with Civil War reproduction fabrics, quirky prints, bold colors, etc. The only complaint I have is that they are cash or check only. I was just passing through the town, so I was not headed there with a significant purchase in mind, so it was okay for me at that moment. But fabric is not a cheap purchase, and paying for it all on cash or check seemed odd. But, if you are prepared - if might not be an issue. read more

I love this store. I do not find the staff rude at all. They are reserved but will help you out if you ask. They don't fawn all over you but they will help you. This place is old-fashioned and I'm not sure the owners encourage socializing with customers. To make it clear how old-fashioned, they didn't take credit cards or allow the clerks to make change until just a few years ago. All money went into the back room where a manager made change and rang up the sale. That's changed but, like I said, it's an old-fashioned store. The selection of fabrics is unique. They have a huge stock of quilt fabs (especially blenders and tonals, and an impressive selection of Kona solids), and their batiks, novelties and neutrals are outstanding. Pretty good Asians, too. Not so good for modern/funky or the big prints favored by some contemporary quilters, although they are stocking more of those than they used to. This is not your shop for Kaffe Fassett or Amy Butler, eg. But they also have wonderful home sewing fabrics like silence cloth, toweling, Malden Mills fleece, and so much more. They also have sewing patterns, books and a decent (not fancy) supply of notions. They don't carry good thread (just C&C) and I wish they did (Aurifil or Superior would be great). read more

I'm giving them five stars because I love the funky old building and I love their selection of fabrics and notions. I also like the fact they don't take credit cards; I walk in with cash, and there's no way I can spend more than I've planned to. Having said that, though, I do have to agree that the service is terrible. I've always felt like my presence in the store is a real inconvenience to the people who work there. On the other hand, it doesn't really bother me -- I'm there for the fabric, not to make friends. If I ask a question, they're always helpful; otherwise, they ignore me. That's actually kind of pleasant! So, oddly, I love this store and hope it stays in business for years to come. read more

My friend and I visited this store on March 16...I thought I knew what I wanted...I was going to make a quilt for a young man...my grandson, in colors black and grey. I was having trouble finding the right fabric combinations. A woman who works there offered to help. (Initials on the sales slip=GT). She was wonderful. She made suggestions of fabrics with deep reds/rusts/greens and golds. Suddenly my quilt went from dull black and grey to this beautiful collection of deep masculine colors. He is a very serious student and she knew right where there were fabrics with fountain pens and library books. I could never have done this without her help,so to GT, thank you very much. read more

I have never seen a store that has such a large variety of cotton (quilting weight) fabric. Every time I go into the store I am impressed with the selection. I also find that the quality of the fabric is excellent. The prices are reasonable - neither bargain basement nor exorbitant (although they do have a small part of the store that has discounted fabrics). The vast majority of the inventory is cotton, although they also offer some heavier weight fabrics suitable for draperies/upholstery as well as some flannels, wools, and corduroys, etc. I am surprised that some other reviewers have complained about the staff. I have always found them to be courteous and helpful. BE AWARE that this store does not accept credit or debit cards - payment must be made via cash or check. read more

I went to the textile company today, slightly concerned because of the reviews here. I had need for a helpful staff to solve a needlepoint problem. I know the place to specialize in beautiful quilt fabric, so i didn't expect much for my needs. I was helped as soon as i made eye contact with my staff lady, and she went out of her way to help me. My first time to at the Textile Company. Awesome experience !! I went in looking for Asian fabric and was immediately escorted to a wonderful selection by a very helpful employee. Another employee helped me determine how much fabric was needed for the borders of my quilt. I'm looking forward to returning again and again! My husband and I are from eastern mass and we were out for a drive... Believe it or not, we just happened on The Textile Compant....Love this place! Love the huge asst of Moda fabrics! Love the huge assortment of civil war choices...was able to find the fabric I have been looking for to use on primitive Santas...I am psyched! And I was lucky enough to be there during their once a year sale and got 20 percent off! The people were friendly ... My only drawback is....cutting could go much faster if they moved ahead and used rotary cutters and gave customers a slip to pay at the exit....they used a wooden "T" square and scissors...and the woman had to leave the counter to figure out the cost of each piece....ten minutes later she returned with the slip...please sit someone at a register to check customers out... Overall...I give it a four...the fabrics are awesome and the people were nice! Guess hubby and I will be taking another ride out there before the sale is over! read more

In old building with lots of character but no AC, so if it's very hot in the afternoon, call first to make sure they're open. Cash and checks only. I am so sad to see the reviews! I have been going to the Textile for over 25 years and have had generally positive interactions with staff! Yes, some staff are friendlier than others, however, I have found they are all are helpful. The quilting fabrics are high quality, unlike the chain stores which sell fabrics. I have noted two draw backs. The first is they do not offer classes. The other is the somewhat limited amount of other types of fabrics. That being said, you can generally find something which will fit the bill if you do not want to go to Springfield. I recommend the Textile to anyone who asks!! read more

This is a very cute shop with nice people who have no regard for the fabric they sell: They rip it, they do this without apology or with out regard that the customer requests it to be cut. Ripping fabric in this day is very different from ripping it in the 1950s... back then the fabric was printed in a different way then it is now, now it is not necessarily printed straight to grain or bolted straight. The consequences of this tearing is that it damages 2-4 inches of the fabric on either end of your purchased piece, and that means that your 36" piece is really only 30-32". Its really sad! I live locally and have been there and ASKED them to cut it (like everyone in every other fabric shop does... or even use a rotary cutter, please!) BUT THEY REFUSE TO CUT FABRIC, insist on only ripping it. Their fabric is so lovely, it is a shame to me that they intentionally destroy it. Eek! Me thinks not... go to Keene! read more

As a fellow local business owner with seamstresses who would utilize this fellow company on a regular basis, I come away feeling nothing but frustration every time I enter it's doors. I'm sure the regulars that they've had for years are thrilled with them, but they are definitely not welcoming to customers they don't recognize and that's unfortunate. On a recent visit, I mentioned that I had been trying to find out what their hours were so I could stop by, and they don't have a voicemail. I was answered with a definitive "we don't have one, just like we don't take credit cards or have a website" I answered that while I understood not wanting to have a website, it seemed silly to me not to have your hours listed on a voicemail - how did they expect people to know when they are open? "Look in the phone book. You have no idea how many times a day we tell people our hours" Doesn't that seem a bit silly, to not just let a voicemail answer for you and tell people your hours? I certainly think so. It's just unfortunate that a fellow business owner could be turned away with so little regard. read more

I hadn't been at the Textile Company in about 35 years -- since it was Eastern Textile, in fact -- and was thrilled to find it still in operation and virtually unchanged. Floor to ceiling stuff -- fabric and notions that are hard to find sometimes, and certainly in a single location. The staff ... I don't know ... they didn't strike me as particularly rude. They're not a warm and fuzzy bunch, certainly, but I don't remember them ever being that. My hunch, considering that when I mentioned that I hadn't been there in 35 years the woman's face lit up and she became much more animated, is that the folks that work here are not unlike computer techs or so-called nerds ... they have a different way with dealing with other human beings. I could be wrong since it was just one visit, but it might be worth a shot to try and engage them...see what happens. There's a need for this old-time kind of business so I'd love to see it stay around for another 35 years. read more

This store IS packed ceiling to floor with fabrics and is a quilter's paradise. I've shopped here at least 7 times in the last two years (I'm not a quilter) purchasing curtain materials, flannel for nightgowns and wool fabrics for winter projects. My "complaint" is that, yes, sometimes I've received less than friendly service, and was unable to get someone to tell me when or if a certain trim would be back in stock - and they were annoyed with my inquiry. At other times, I've received wonderful, cheerful service - even help carrying out my purchase! The place has a charm all it's own - the floors are uneven, creek and the fabrics they stock are of a huge variety. Plan on spending a pleasant amount of time just browsing. It's true - they do not accept credit cards, but take your local check or good old cash. So, go visit them and just know that some of the staff are less thrilled to interact with you than others for whatever reason, but don't let that put you off. The Textile Company is a valuable local resource. read more
